Dwight Knight's season went on par with what was expected of him. In a rebuilding Tampa Bay Barracuda environment that was littered with shells of bodies on defense there was only so much Dwight could do. His expectations were to be a support role for someone else to score a lot of goals. This overall was successful. Line-mate Justin Keahi was successful in this. His shooting percentage was one of the higher values in the league, in fact it was good enough for 17th overall in the league shooting 13.89%. This difficulty was that he didn't have very many shooting opportunities only shooting the puck 72 times across the entire season. Dwight's season was something that could be considered average, across 50 games played had 5 goals and 13 assists, 10 penalty minutes and 81 shots on goal. Had 42 hits, and 7 takeaways. An area that was a real disappointment for Dwight was he was a liability with the puck. He turned the puck over an astounding 29 times over the 50 games. That's an area of the game that he's looking to improve upon going forward.

I would say the most memorable cup win in the last decade is S54: New Orleans over Hamilton. The reason for this is because at this time was the first time that I actually followed the SHL playoffs and finals. Until this point I had been too new to the league to care about who won the SHL Challenge cup. In addition to it being the first cup that I actually paid attention to, it also had a lot of the people that I had come to grow and know in the league get a DUB. There was a lot of cross-over in players who were on that NOLA team and the Carolina Kraken management. It was really cool seeing Fuzz and Sloth get a win for their respective players. This was also the cup that was just after the initial switch to FHM. I look at year 1 in FHM as a training wheels year where people really had 0 clue on what was happening and this was the start to what the SHL has become.

The current FHM 12-team playoff bracket is definitely far from perfect, but imagine if the playoffs had the nine through twelve team had a playoff bye and in the first round the team that was #1 seed played against the #3 seed and the #2 seed played against the #4 seed meanwhile the #6 seed plays against the #7 seed and the #8 seed plays against the #5 seed. Afterwards the loser of each game played against the the ranked 9-12 team re-seeded from lowest to high. If you won you're first game in the first pool you were out of the tournament and didn't place.  Meanwhile the losers from the next bracket of games will play each other and whoever loses the most wins the tournament. That would be one of the dumbest playoff formats for a 12 team playoff I could think of.

What's your prediction for this season's IIHF tournament? Which teams do you expect to do well (or not well)? Which players?
My prediction for this season's IIHF tournament is that Team Japan will do extremely well and will probably medal, this is specifically because Monkey D. Luffy is playing with a build that is far and away one of the best builds. Due to his previous season file issue he's playing with a build that is 150 TPE above what he would normally have due to regression. This means he is likely to destroy for team Japan and hard carry them to the medal round. A team that will likely be in the championship game is team Canada, even though they have Gabe on their team I think they can preserver. They have a strong goaltender in Frans Eller, and studs in Theo Morgan, Aaron Wilson, Dick Clapper, Adam Barron, Matt Kholin just to name a few. I would be surprised if they don't win a gold medal this season, It would be a tragedy if they didn't.

In addition to being one of the most modest lakes it's also the largest lake in the great lakes. It's also the largest freshwater body of water in the world and is surrounded by the largest amount of national parks

d) Once it's safe to do so, if I had to go hang out with one of the users on Buffalo/Hamilton I'd hang out with Alexander Roach. The thing we would probably do is go do tequilla shots, get Nashville hot chicken sandwiches and hang out with the boys.

My third season in the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League was quite the rollercoaster.  It started off by the announcement of Ryu Jones as the Captain of the Anaheim Outlaws for Season 56, which was a welcome surprise.  He knew that our GM, Brandon Donini, was expecting great things from him for this season, so he didn’t want to let him down.  The Season started out a little slow for Ryu, having to work with a whole new wing in Thomas Rose, and Hubert Anders, the center that was on the same line with Ryu for the latter half of Season 55 after Anaheim traded away Rikard Hammarberg.  Anaheim was luckily pulled along offensively by the second line pairing of Donair-Boxman-Burke, which kept Anaheim competitive while the 1st line gelled.  Once things started to click, the 1st line was putting up just as much points as the 2nd line and Anaheim ended the season a close second in the Division to the Nevada Battleborn.  Ryu finished the season with 16 Goals and 27 Assists, both personal bests on the offensive side, and still was a force in the Defensive Zone with 62 Shots Blocked and 34 Takeaways.  (197 words)

The obvious best option for a 12 team playoff bracket is a 12 team triple elimination format.  Everyone loves lots of games, so this format has games on games on games.  This format has everything, loser’s bracket runbacks, double runbacks, and a possibility for 3 Finals games if one of the teams hasn’t lost yet.  This will keep all of the teams involved on their toes as it’s anyone’s game and you just need to get hot at the right time to make a miracle run that could take your team from the brink of defeat straight to the Championship Cup Finals. Which SHL or SMJHL team was the best team to not make the finals this season and why?
I would say that the Calgary Dragons are the best team to miss the finals, and the fact that they missed didn’t even make it to the semifinals even a bigger shock.  After such a dominating regular season where they only allowed 85 goals against, their defense could be one of the best of this era.  Of course, their defeat came from the Edmonton Blizzard, a divisional rival, so one that has plenty of tape and practice against what the Calgary Dragons have to offer.  With the age that some of their skaters are getting to, this may have been one of the last times they are this dominant.  So it’s a shame they never got to go the whole way together. What's your prediction for this season's IIHF tournament? Which teams do you expect to do well (or not well)? Which players?
This will be quite a homerism of a pick for the IIHF Tournament, but I predict good things for Team Japan this Season.  Last tournament Japan had to make their roster with a 350 TPE Ryu Jones, a 425 Ryosuke Sato, and a 588 TPE Khan Smeb.  Those types of numbers will be a decent impairment to the team, allowing the other team to pick on such inexperienced players while they’re on the ice to run up the score.  However, they only had plus minuses of -2, -4, and 0, respectively.  So the team around them was able to prop them up so that they weren’t such a detriment while out there.  Japan was able to get 8 wins and 4 losses during the Round Robin portion of the tournament, and then they made it all the way to the 3rd Place game in the Bracket Play where they won and brought home the Bronze Medal.  This season, everyone has only been getting better on the roster and are poised to make another strong run in this Season’s IIHF tournament. Jimmy Wagner's rookie season was an up and down experience, the points didn't come as easily as they had in the SMJHL and there were some definite growing pains outside of that as well. We hit a new career high in penalties despite having solid skating, and "Jimmy Wagner, certifiable goon" was mentioned a number of times. Scoring the first few goals in important games against New Orleans felt amazing, and being reunited on a line with Keith Lee was a big upside to what was going to be a mediocre season for the Panthers. Los Angeles as a whole came out hot but regressed back to the mean as the season went on, with the big news happing right before the deadline that we brought in the star forward Jimmy Slothface. That added a lot to our forward core, and gave us a lot of optimism looking forward even after the 1st round exit.

The most memorable Challenge Cup Finals in the last decade of the SHL is the season 53 finals between Hamilton and Edmonton. After all of the drama that involved SimonT, Hamilton, and other teams, the league got a facelift. A lot of work went into moving to FHM 6, new teams were created and simming saw a radical change. After all of that, Hamilton saw themselves in the finals, gaining the ire of many. Their opponent is the team that they faced in season 51, the Edmonton Blizzard. Two powerhouses of their conferences for the last few seasons were facing off once again, which in it's own way was a reassuring thing. SimonT had issues with randomness, goalies, and coinflips, so the result might have been expected, but it was welcoming. The winner of the cup is important, but the 53 title is meaningful because it was the start of a truly new era in the league.

As someone who regularly critiques the playoff format, a 12 team playoff could be really good. The number of teams does feel good, and the division winners getting byes is a nice reward for a good regular season that gives teams a reason to fight for every game. You could do way worse than the predictable but bad bracket we have though:

Double elimination, random reseeding, best of ones. Higher seed is always the home team, the top 4 teams get byes, the other 8 play a single game. The losers of the top bracket play-in go to the lower bracket round of eight, the winners go to the top bracket round of eight. The losers from the top bracket round of eight go to the lower bracket round of eight and the winners go to the top bracket round of four. The winners from the lower bracket round of eight go to the lower bracket round of six, the losers go play golf. The losers from the top bracket round of four go to the lower bracket round of six and the winners go to the top bracket final. The winners from the lower bracket round of six go to the lower bracket round of four, the losers go play golf. The loser from the top bracket final goes to the lower bracket round of four and the winner waits a bit. The winners from the lower bracket round of four play each other in the lower bracket final, and the winner of that plays the top bracket final in a best of three where the top bracket champion has a free game.

It's awful.

I made a picture.

Which SHL or SMJHL team was the best team to not make the finals this season and why?

With the playoff format the way it is, Vancouver or Carolina won't make the finals in the J, and that has to be the easy answer. Vancouver has an elite goalie tandem and the strongest roster of skaters the J has seen in a while, while Carolina has one of the best offenses in the league and a goalie that can beat any team on any given night. Much like last season in the J, the 2 seed is strong - but slightly worse on paper than the 1 seed - and either of them could likely beat the other team that makes the finals.

a. Faelax, since it kind of already happens on a regular basis. Even with the pandemic we go play golf together, and we are trying to get back for some DnD sessions once it's more reasonable to do so. Outside of the low hanging fruit, I get along well with Evok too, so the three of us probably would have some sort of J GM board game night.

This season has been amazing for both the Vancouver Whalers and as a result, amazing for Ryosuke Sato. Sato has put up his best numbers in his career so far and this was 3 times the number of points over his last season all time low production of 8 points, and 0 goals. Ryosuke put up 7 goals, 17 assists for 24 points in the regular season. Then, in the playoffs, Sato slowed down a bit with 2 goals, 4 assists for 6 points. However, Sato knew to come up clutch as he scored the 2nd goal in the cup winning game on a breakaway from Sarah Burke and Luffy Richard. Definitely the highlight of his career thus far. This season can definitely be contributed to a strong Whalers team. Next season, it's tough to say but the North Stars are on the up and up. Where Sato slots in is tough to say. However I have a strong feeling the Luffy-Sato connection from the Whalers will continue! (168 words)

I think for sure the New Orleans Specters' first Challenge Cup will go down into history. A first cup is always a huge thing so I think the New Orleans Specters' first cup will be one of the most searched statistic out of all of these cups so far. There were so close on a couple of occasions and they were able to win their first cup in a shorter period of time in comparison to a number of other teams. Then there's the cup winning goal from Mitchell Van Der Heijden that was absolutely great since it was their rookie that was in their first season in their SHL. However, if it weren't for the Specters winning their first cup, I thought the Manhattan Rage had a really memorable cup. This is probably because the Rage cup was the first one from when I joined the site. Therefore, their cup win will always be in my memory. (157 words)

If the SHL needed to set up a playoff bubble (like the NHL did in Edmonton/Toronto or the NBA in Orlando), which city would be the best candidate to host as the hub city? What would the players do during their time in a playoff bubble? (For graphic option, make an advertisement [like a pamphlet/brochure] in support of a specific city as the hub city and highlighting the reasons why.)
I don't think the SHL can do any better than Vancouver. Vancouver being an SMJHL location, the location would provide no bias for any of the teams in the SHL. In addition to that, Vancouver is a great hockey city with great infrastructure for such an event. The players can be placed into the Fairmont hotel which is one of the best hotels in all of Canada, as well as playing in a great arena in Rogers Arena. Even if it isn't the Fairmont hotel, there are a number of other hotels in the downtown area and a large airplane hub. I may also be biased, but the food is also top notch which would be great for the players that are forced to be in the bubble for a long period of time. With such great infrastructure, food, and amenities, I think that Vancouver would be a great location to set up a playoff bubble in the SHL. (159 words)

Which SHL or SMJHL team was the best team to not make the finals this season and why?
I think that the Manhattan Rage was the best team to not make the finals because although their players are aging, they have done a great job in fighting back regression. Plus, I personally think that the Rage would have had an easier road to the finals compared to the other teams such as the Calgary Dragons or the Edmonton Blizzard. For the Rage, their top players in Thomason and Wagstrom, as well as Cleary and McCarthy on the defensive end should be more than enough to make it to the finals in my opinion. Plus, Larson is a good goaltender as well if that is worth anything. (108 words)

Being able to get the silver medal in the last IIHF tournament, Team Japan should be able to repeat this play in my opinion. Monkey D. Luffy I think would really be carrying the team once again as seen through his regular season, and playoffs performance. I would even say that Monkey D. Luffy could lead the entire tournament in points. In comparison, I expect my player Ryosuke Sato would be the biggest bum on the team. Even after unbanking TPE and improving attributes all around, Sato is facing some top notch talent and I don't think he is ready for this just yet. (156 words)

b. Do you foresee the teams making any strategic adjustments during the course of the series? Should the teams be quick to switch tactics or stick with what they've been using?
c. These two teams hail from the Great Lakes Division. Which of the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) do you think is the Greatest and why?
d. If, once it is safe to do so, you had to go hang out in person with one of the users on Buffalo/Hamilton, who would you hang out with and what would you do? (if you pick gabe you get -1 tpe)
a. I don't think we can contest that the Hamilton Steelhawks have the best roster of skaters this entire season. They legit stole one of the top TPE forwards in Michael Scarn and Theo Morgan. With the lost of Scarn, their opponent in the Buffalo Stampede lose a top tier forward. It didn't help that Cassius Darrow got taken during the expansion draft. (62 words)

b. I think that the Buffalo Stampede have to be active in terms of their tactics as they have to continue to mess with their tactics to find the optimal set. It is certainly an uphill battle for the Stampede so even continuous testing may not be enough, although it is definitely worth the shot. The Hamilton Steelhawks on the other hand are able to be less proactive with their tactics, however should not underestimate their opponents. (76 words)

c. Between the Great Lakes, I can't definitively say which one is the best because I haven't been there (but I hope sometime in my life time!), but I would like to say Lake Ontario is the greatest just because I'm a city boy. I'm not much of an outdoor person so Lake Ontario would fit me best being right next to Lake Ontario. There's gonna be a bunch of nice city views, as well as the great food and activities nearby. Plus, I heard we can skate on it when it freezes over! (93 words)

d. Because Gabe is apparently not an option lol, I'd probably pick Theo Morgan (RM) to go hang and chill in Montreal. Montreal is a great city with a lot of history and it has always been on my list of places to go. Then RM spoke a lot of the great food there and that would do it for me! (60 words)

Welp, you waited until the last day to grind out your CW and the CC finals are longggggggg over by now. congrats to [TEAM], woo! Reflecting back on the series, who gets your vote for series MVP? Make the case why this player deserves it over any other.
I think that this season the MVP goes to someone that is actually not on the championship winning team. Monkey D. Luffy I would say has been the MVP of the series. Luffy scored at a rate of around 1.3 points per game and had a good number of hits, shots blocked, and takeaways for a forward. With these numbers, Luffy led both his team in scoring by 5 points, as well as led the entire playoffs in points. The runner ups for MVP I would say is either Elizabeth Doyle with a 2.86 GAA and a 0.910 SV%, or Theo Morgan of Hamilton who led his team in scoring with a slightly lower points per game. Reflection on your season - how did your player fare on the ice this season? Did you meet or surpass your individual player goals or did you come up short? Whether you excelled or disappointed - what can you attribute that to? What will you try to do better next season?

I thought that Alexander Roach did fairly well on the ice this season. I am a little behind the rest of the Buffalo roster in TPE, so I was hoping to not be a burden to the squad. I was hoping to get around 15 points, and finish with a positive +/-. I finished with 8 goals and 11 assists for 19 points, which is better than what I was anticipating. I also finished +6, which is pretty good. I also had a couple of game winning goals, which is always nice to see. Something that could use some work is my defensive play. 49 DGR isn’t gonna cut it here. Next season I want to improve on my defensive game some more, while trying to keep up the offensive production. I would also like to earn the center spot on my line if possible. I would also like to get some more hits next season, which is something I’ll work on during the offseason.

Of the 10 most recent finals series, which do you think is the most memorable and why? Which will be remembered in history as the best/most important/most memorable series or victory? S46: BUF over NOLA, S47: WKP over CGY, S48: BUF over WPG, S49: EDM over NEW, S50: CGY over TBB, S51: HAM over EDM, S52: MAN over SFP, S53: HAM over EDM, S54: NOLA over HAM, S55: BUF over NOLA.

In my slightly biased opinion, it has to be the season 55 finals between Buffalo and New Orleans. The Stampede started out looking a little rough, and were down 3-2 heading into game 6. They got a big win in game 6 by a score of 6-1 to force game 7. After some testing from both sides, game 7 went down the next day. It was a back and forth affair all game, with it going into overtime. Now, most people love game 7 overtimes, but everyone in Buffalo was super stressed out, and I’m sure it was the same feeling in New Orleans. It started out with NOLA looking good, until the game turned around. NOLA forward Nicholas Williams got out on a breakaway, and everyone thought the game was over there, but Buffalo goalie Elizabeth Doyle shut him down, and from there Buffalo rode that wave of momentum all the way to the finish line, capping it off with the captain Monkey D. Luffy scoring the cup winner a few minutes later.

What's your prediction for this season's IIHF tournament? Which teams do you expect to do well (or not well)? Which players?

This season's IIHF tournament should be a good one. There are quite a few good teams, and a couple of dark horse teams that could make a deep run. There are all of the usual suspects at the top, the juggernauts of the United States and Canada, the recent top dog in Great Britain, and a surprisingly deep team Japan. A couple of scandinavian teams in Norway and Sweden are dark horses in this tournament, you should not sleep on those two. They have the talent to make deep runs if everything comes together for them. Even teams like Germany and Ireland have a chance to do well, which just goes to show how tight the competition at these IIHF tournaments are. For my official prediction, I think team GB will take the gold, defeating Japan in the final match. Finally, the USA will take the bronze medal in a match with Canada.

a. I think that Buffalo has the better skaters on paper. Between all of the insane forwards like Luffy, Sharp, Kholin, and Passamus, the strong defense of Selich, Scoop, and Wang, and an amazing goalie in Doyle, I think that the Stampede have the better roster. Not to say the Hamiltons roster is bad, but Buffalos is slightly better.

b. I think we will see a lot of tactical adjustments throughout the series. I think both teams will be doing a lot of testing and brainstorming to try and squeeze out every percentage point they can for what will no doubt be a really close series. I think it starts out close to what they are each running right now, but will end up looking very different by the time the series is over.

c. Having been to all of the Great Lakes at one point, I’d say that Lake Michigan is the best, specifically on the shores of the top end of the southern peninsula. It has some really nice beaches that are almost perfect during the summer for a nice day trip or weekend camping trip.

d. While I would love to hang out with any of the fine folks in Buffalo, Evok and WannabeFinn are the two that jump to mind right away. Evok and I are the GMs of QCC and I would love to meet her in person. WBF and I don’t live that far away from each other as it turns out, I would love to catch a CBJ game with him sometime.

Oh yeah man guy zheng absolutely killed it out there and defied all expectations after 10 seasons of being an absolutely useless pylon on the ice. For once in his shitty career he managed to actually contribute to the success of the team while also managing to pad his stats a little bit and hopefully go for that stevens nom. I can attribute his stellar performance to the fact that I was able to give him as much ice time as I want because no one can tell me no other than hotdog but if hotdog tells me no then I'll remind him that the other option is to play simon and leppy more so he would very quickly shut up and let zheng play 30 minutes a game. Next season is gonna be another big season, even though guy is taking another small step back because of regression I have no doubt that he will continue to shine by putting the team on his back unless he has to play with simon in which case it's gonna be a rough ride.

What's your prediction for this season's IIHF tournament? Which teams do you expect to do well (or not well)? Which players?

So the predictions this year are a little dicier than last year's just because I'm no longer the person doing the lines and test sims for GB so it's definitely all going downhill from here (jk love you bromanov). All jokes aside I think Canada are, as always, the heavy tournament favourites, and as long as noka and simon do their jobs and submit some half decent lines (big if), this tournament should be theirs for the taking. Aside from Canada, I believe it'll be a close race for the rest of the medals between GB, Japan, USA, and Czechia. Honestly no clue who comes out on top, especially since Japan has an absolutely insane over buffed under regressed Luffy out there wrecking everyone. One thing's for sure it's going to be a fun tournament and I wish more people paid attention to IIHF. There's some great stuff going on in the tournament and teams like Canada are a great look at what the league would look like without a salary cap.

The arenas in Buffalo and Hamilton want to make sure they're pulling out all the stops on the big stage. Help the concessions department of one of these two teams develop a new product, with marketing specifically pertaining to this finals series, to be sold at the arena during the finals. Describe the product and the marketing in 150 words or create a promotional poster showing the product, its name, the price, etc.

Ok so the Hamilton Steelhawks have got this new product, right? It's gonna be huge. It's gonna be great. It's gonna make them loads of money. It's going to be publicly endorsed by great players such as @5ympathies live on television right before his matches. So, what is this product, you may ask? Well, it's going to be the new Buffalo Stampede burger! Now, I know everyone reading this has loads of questions. Why would @5ympathies endorse a beef burger when he doesn't really eat beef? Why would the Steelhawks promote a "Buffalo Stampede" burger? What's in the burger? Well, I'm glad you asked. You see, @5ympathies would endorse the burger because he's being threatened at knife point by Gabriel @Gwdjohnson "GoneWild" Johnson. The Steelhawks are promoting a Buffalo Stampede burger because you're eating the Buffalo! Duh! Also the burger has a buffalo patty with some green lettuce and yellow cheese! Great idea I know.

a. Both of these teams have an impressive set of skaters - without factoring in any coaching or tactical strategies, which team do you think has the better roster of skaters on paper?

Hamilton has got to have the better team on paper. If this question were asked last season, I definitely would have said Buffalo has the better team, however, since they lost quite a few key high-TPE members such as hhh and trautner, it's levelled the playing field quite a lot. Hamilton also added to their roster with RM and trautner, so now it's been completely flipped on its head.

b. Do you foresee the teams making any strategic adjustments during the course of the series? Should the teams be quick to switch tactics or stick with what they've been using?

Oh yeah man I can absolutely foresee Gabriel @Gwdjohnson "GoneWild" Johnson making changes to their tactics every game like the little test simming weasel that he is. He's going to be tweaking every little bit of their tactics, even if they win, just to prevent getting hard countered by Tomen and the gang and to secure a championship that is likely theirs if neither team touches tactics. Side note since I'm writing this after the finals I'm not sure if this actually happened but I will just assume it did.

c. These two teams hail from the Great Lakes Division. Which of the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) do you think is the Greatest and why?

I know everyone's going to take the easy answer and say Lake Superior is clearly the superior lake. I mean, it's in the name! How can it not be a superior? However, as someone who has never actually seen the Great Lakes before other than when I visited Niagara Falls and also walked along the waterfront in downtown Toronto, I am absolutely unqualified to answer this question so I will pick Lake Ontario as the greatest because it's the only one I've actually seen to the best of my knowledge.

d. If, once it is safe to do so, you had to go hang out in person with one of the users on Buffalo/Hamilton, who would you hang out with and what would you do? (if you pick gabe you get -1 tpe)

Definitely gotta be @5ympathies I mean that guy is great I'd love to hang out with him sometime except sometimes there are some complications that get in the way that are definitely unforeseen but also hilarious at the same time but still completely baffling. For example, sometimes his parents could just get mad at him for taking a stroll around the house and subsequently not let him leave the house for another 2 weeks or maybe even 2 months who knows! Absolutely incredible scenes. Gotta watch some more movies together while shitfaced.

For it being Danny’s 2nd season in the SHL, it wasn’t bad offensively. Fewer goals, same number of assists. Defensively, the season was a disaster. A lot fewer hits, blocked shots, and way more giveaways. The only improvements were in number of shots on goal (accuracy was bad though) and in plus-minus. My goal was thirty points this season and to increase my defensive play skills. I did neither, on the whole. I really focused on defensive stats, and it didn’t really work out for my Playmaker role. I upped my hitting and checking, and Playmaker doesn’t focus on that as much as puckhandling, passing, and offensive read. The goal over the off-season and through next season is to build up my offensive and physical stats and get back to being a better Playmaker center. I will say that I’m glad to have brought my plus-minus up a lot, and that my point contributions didn’t fall off too much from last season. Still, it would be nice to have a better season in S57. 174 words

I think if the SHL were to set up a bubble, Miami is the ideal place to do so. In canon, we reference current NHL and AHL arenas, so it stands to reason that the BB&T Center in Sunrise is a building that exists, as is the old West Kendall arena. Neither are being used for anything but can house hockey events. One arena could have had the lower-seeded teams while the other had the higher-seeded teams. Travel to Miami is also relatively easy. It has 2 international airports in the same county (Miami International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International) for teams that would air travel, and 2 major interstates (I-75 and I-95) that end in the city for teams that prefer land travel. Also, in Miami tradition, there wouldn’t be a difference in fan turnout if the arenas are empty. Miami residents rarely, if ever, turn out to fill up half of an arena for a winning team anyway. 159 words

Nope. I did not meet or surpass my individual player goals. Weirdly, I can't exactly attribute that to a lack of TPE invested in those areas because offense is what I've allocated the most TPE into! I've been traded from the Jets to the North Stars after S56, and I honestly am not convinced that I'll do any better this time around. Sure, I'll be roughly 200 tpe higher than I was at the same point previous, but I'll be pumping up my defensive stats almost exclusively. Maybe it helps with puck possession? I'm not sure. But I've decided to take a zen approach to my performance at this point, because worrying about it is pretty pointless. Toronto's an up and coming team (not to say Winnipeg wasn't), and I believe my best course of action is to keep plugging away and believe that it'll someday pay off. The weird thing, though, is that despite being on the weaker side in terms of defensive stats, I actually had a pretty good season defensively. Actually, maybe that's not so weird, considering I was paired with Slip McScruff for most of the season... it helps to have one of the best defensive defensemen in the league babysitting you. ■

Pretty much the only finals I can really remember of the ones listed is the CGY over TBB matchup. I can think of a few reasons why:
1. The Tampa Bay Barracuda have been a bottom-dwelling team these past few seasons, so seeing them associated with a challenge cup finals is jarring.
2. I remember Kalakar being pretty upset about the series in the Team Canada LR, because...
3. The Tampa Bay Barracuda had a 3-0 lead in the finals and got reversed swept by Calgary. That's... kinda fucked up. I feel for them because, despite the roleplaying aspects of this game, it's not like the users are the ones on the ice, you know? You can't say that any of those players deserved to lose that series, because it's all simulated and as a player you're pretty much left to watch and wait. So Tampa Bay was made to believe they were about to easily win the Challenge Cup and then they didn't. In the harshest way possible. Not cool, STHS.

Oh, and speaking of seeing names that throw you off in that list of matchups... it's insane to think that San Francisco was in the finals just four seasons ago, given how the barn doors have been blown off that roster. ■

FHM's 12-team playoff bracket setup has received a fair bit of scrutiny. It re-seeds after the play-in round and for some reason puts the #1 seed and #2 seed on the same side of the bracket. I challenge you to come up with a different playoff format - can you come up with a format that's dumber/worse than this? be creative! Come up with the worst possible format for a 12-team playoff.

I think the dumbest playoff format would be to have a round robin, and just decide the winner by an arbitrary statistic. Does that count as one? For example, have all 12 teams in the playoffs play each other once and then decide the winner by crowning the team with the most goals scored. It doesn't take into account divisions or conferences, and guarantees teams will be trying to play all-out offense-favoured hockey.
If we're sticking with wins being the deciding factor, I would say do it like a Mortal Kombat tournament: Have the lowest seeded team face off against the second lowest, and the winner of that series faces off against the third lowest, and so on. Sure, it would take a year to sim all of that and you'd be left with completely scuffed playoff statistics, but I think that kind of royal rumble style tournament would be neat to see at least once. ■

Which SHL or SMJHL team was the best team to not make the finals this season and why?

When this season began, I was convinced that the finals matchup would be Calgary vs Manhattan. Both have already great rosters that got improved by moves in the offseason: Calgary with Lockhart, Manhattan with Cleary. I guess it's not a total surprise to see them miss out given that the best three teams in the league all seem to be from the same division: the Great Lakes, which leads me to my third most surprising team to not make the finals: Chicago. The Syndicate have an excellent roster with talent all over. The D is complete with Ren, Dayudie, Smeb, and Kennedy all playing at a high level... Daniel Smeb, Lallo Selman, and Martijn Westbroek are all insanely high TPE players that are at their peak performance, and there are further game changers in Ryan Shepard, Nick Connolly and Gunnar Soderberg. I'm shocked to see that they've fumbled a 3-0 series lead, though I guess it's made less shocking by the fact that it was a fellow Great Lakes team that came back from that deficit. Boy, imagine being traded to the team that has to leap-frog HAM, CHI, or BUF... ■

What's your prediction for this season's IIHF tournament? Which teams do you expect to do well (or not well)? Which players?

Another CW, another chance to pump my own team's tires. Canada is really rounding into its peak with this season's roster. There are some players on the way down with regression, like the S46ers in Matt Kholin, Dick Clapper, Commander Shepard, but there's also the group of players that are either in their peak season (S47) or very close (S48). Consider that all six of the starting D are S48 or later (Wang S50, Barron S50, Johnson S48, Odelein III S48, Cleary S48, Leblanc S48) and you see why this is a really unique window for Team Canada to compete at the highest possible level. In net, Frans Eller has gotten even better, especially when you consider he was already good enough to help Canada win the gold two seasons ago. Theo Morgan, Dick Clapper, and Aaron Wilson are three high-level scoring machines from Hamilton that help give Canada what is---in my opinion--- the best offense in the tournament. It's just an all-around stellar team with an abundance of talent that's hitting its stride pretty much all at once. I'm excited to see what happens.

For non homer picks, I'd play up the chances of Great Britain, Japan, Czechia, and Team USA. All of them possess the top level talent needed to win the competition, and I wouldn't be surprised to see any of those teams take home the gold medal. ■

Tampa that season were a huge team full of huge active players, and they were a team at their peak and ready to compete. In that offseason, they had made a huge trade that saw wantaway Hamilton stars Anastasia O'Koivu and Nikolai Evans go their way for a massive package out to Hamilton in return. The team looked very well-poised to take the cup after eliminating Hamilton in those playoffs to get to the finals, and things looked in the bag after they took a 3-0 series lead against the Dragons to start things off. But then the unthinkable happened and Calgary, who were major underdogs, came all the way back to reverse sweep them and take it. This happening was a major catalyst into what eventually led to Tampa blowing up and selling house, and will definitely stay in history as one of the craziest finals we'll ever see. (186 words)

What's your prediction for this season's IIHF tournament? Which teams do you expect to do well (or not well)? Which players?

I think this every year even though it pans out pretty rarely, but I have to back Canada for gold in this tournament. The team is simply too strong on paper as the general core of the squad is basically at its peak TPE levels, and with the lowest TPE players being in the 1.4k range, they come in as overwhelming favourites. It will be interesting to see who steps up to dominate the scoring for them after last season's MVP Jeff Brogen was left out this time, but new additions to the team Jean Paul Boivin and Simon Leblanc will bring a lot of much needed strength and edge to the lineup. I think you have to expect Theo Morgan to be the major threat for Canada, after he just broke the SHL goal record last season, and with talents around him like Maxime Bouchard, Matt Kholin, Aaron Wilson, Dick Clapper, etc. to choose from, there will be no lack of opportunities for him to similarly light up the international stage. a. Both of these teams have an impressive set of skaters - without factoring in any coaching or tactical strategies, which team do you think has the better roster of skaters on paper?
(if you pick gabe you get -1 tpe)
a. I am biased but I am backing my boys Hamilton. Buffalo made some heavy losses to team quality as a result of expansion, and Hamilton recovered very well from their expansion losses with trades and free agent signings. With the threat that players like Morgan, Wilson, Scarn and Clapper have been posing in these playoffs, its easy for me.
b. As someone that will be largely involved in making changes if necessary, yes I would say so lol. We have to acknowledge we are fighting a tactical battle against a team that will look to find the best approach, and prepare accordingly. When you're in the finals everything depends on your tactical adaptability and ability to make changes to counter weaknesses.
c. Are you kidding me lmao its not even close. Lake Superior is the absolute Chad of the Great Lakes and anyone who picks a different lake is simply a contrarian trying to play devil's advocate for no reason. Lake Superior is the single largest body of freshwater in the WORLD by surface area, never mind the Great Lakes.
Just look at this chart showing the sheer size difference between Superior and the rest of the Great Lakes. You think they called it Superior for no reason? Grow up lol

d. I would hang out with nour and gooney (sorry Waters you are not a member of the Hamilton Steelhawks anymore I do not want you anywhere near me in real life) if I had the option! In fact I was supposed to hang out with them this summer for the second time, with perhaps more members of Hamilton coming too, but this dumb stupid thing called Covid 19 happened and stopped me from being able to do so! As for what we would do, we would get drunk as fuck in broad daylight again probably.

Reflection on your season - how did your player fare on the ice this season? Did you meet or surpass your individual player goals or did you come up short? Whether you excelled or disappointed - what can you attribute that to? What will you try to do better next season?

Sven Svenson had a pretty tough and disappointing rookie season playing for the rebuilding San Francisco Pride. The team finished with only 4 wins in 50 games, last place in the league, and Sven’s performance naturally suffered. The San Francisco Pride scored 71 goals and were scored on 243 times, a -172 goal differential, so naturally Sven had a +/- of -42. For his team only scoring 1.4 goals a game, it’s no surprise that Sven finished the season with only 3 goals and 10 assists… a paltry 13 points. Sven let his aggression out through physical play this season, amassing 142 hits. Svenson was an ice-time monster this season, eating up nearly 23 minutes of ice time (22:51) a night – making his per 60 advanced stats even more pathetic. Next season SFP will not be under a cap penalty and will have much more room to field a competitive roster, so Sven will have more SHL-caliber players to play with. Additionally, next season young players like HLO, Bjerg, Kavanagh, and Petrenko will be a year older and playing at a higher level.

The most memorable series has to be the S52 Series of Manhattan besting the San Francisco Pride in 6 games. It will be memorable to me because it is the high point of the San Francisco Pride before starting a slow descent into first mediocrity, then fire sale full-blown rebuild mode. It is too bad San Francisco did not win the cup in S52, because from there on out things have been rough for the Pride. S52 was my SMJHL rookie season and I was just still getting acclimated to the league when the playoffs were underway. I did not have any team I was rooting for in particular, more just watching the playoffs unfold with some familiarity of teams based on who the rookie mentors played for. When it came down to the finals, I liked Manhattan because of some of the users on it but I also really liked San Francisco’s branding. They lost, and had the 15th overall pick in the next season – which they used to draft me. I thought I would be joining a championship contender team, but coming up on 5 seasons later the Pride have entered a full rebuild of which I hope to be a part of the solution to.

I think the worst possible bracket I can come up with is a simple pairing of seeds in ascending order. #1 plays #2, #3 plays #4 etc. The next round, however, becomes a typical high vs. low seeding, so in the second round winner of 1v2 plays the winner of 11v12. From here there are 3 teams left, and one of them gets a bye round straight to the championship based on a random lottery. The remaining two teams play each other in the lone semi-finals series. This is awful because it punishes teams that finish well in the regular season (having to play another good team), but doesn’t completely incentivize tanking because the winner of 11v12 will have to play a good team. To top if off, after the second round one team randomly gets a huge boost by being selected to get a semi-finals bye. How infuriating for the two other teams.

The best SHL candidate for a hub bubble city would have to be Los Angeles. It’s a city that doesn’t have horrific weather in the winter, which is more than you can say than just about every other SHL city. This will allow players to have virtual amenities that are second to none – including an outdoor BBQ area, pool side party area, games like volleyball and cornhole, and nearby beaches where they can maybe pick up surfing. The SHL bubble will also allow players to leave the bubble, completing defeating the point of it (much like the NBA bubble), in case they really want to go to an outdoor café or grimy strip club. This will be important to making the season feel normal for players, allowing them to get up to their normal post-game drinking and partying routine. The bubble will also include a cannabis dispensary to allow players to relax and recharge – this bubble the players will not ever want to leave…

Which SHL or SMJHL team was the best team to not make the finals this season and why?

The best SMJHL team to not make the finals this past season was the Anchorage Armada. As much as I have disdain for the team, I cannot deny that they were a great team this season. They finished 3rd in the league in the regular season, 2 points back of second place Carolina, playing in a tough Western Conference. The Armada scored the most goals as a team this season at 170 and only gave up 136, second in both goals against and goal differential only to Vancouver. They were a scary team and could have easily made a run to win the Four Star Cup this season.

This season for Sharp had it's series of ups and downs but ultimately turned out to be another productive season. A fast start diluted slightly by a slow middle portion of the season while Buffalo experimented with several line combinations. Ultimately this season, Sharp saw a large amount of minutes and was on the primary power play line for the first time since his time in Juniors. This proved to be fruitful for Sharp's own production and helped him gain a lot of confidence. Sharp remains one of best two way players in the league and this season showed. Sharp's presence on the ice was almost always paired with holding or extending leads, which is shown a bit through his +/- of 41 with other top 6 forwards on the team being around 20 lower than that. Sharp's honed his two way game and his play maker skills this season through brief stints of play with Luffy as well. He's taking time in the off season to continue focusing on these skills and his conditioning to ensure many more productive seasons.

One of the most memorable finals series for me was the S55 Buffalo win over NOLA. There is certainly some bias in there but there are a few legit reasons why it comes to mind. The first being that while it was my second cup win, it was my first as a primary contributor to the team. Sharp was still fairly fresh during the first cup win and while he made some contributions during that run, he mostly relied on his veteran teammates like Marius, Hippo, Metlzer and a few others to carry the team to victory. S55 though has Sharp in his prime, but with that came a very poor playoff showing. This has been used as motivation, and the fruits of his hard worked showed in S56. The other reason why this is the most memorable for me is just the pure drama behind it. The series had major momentum swings and it all came down to a single, sudden victory goal in overtime of game 7, put home by Luffy. Doesn't get much more high drama than that.

12 team, triple elimination bracket with all series being 1 game only. It has the best of both worlds, games are important but 1 bad game doesn't ruin everything! Starts with 1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8, 9v10, 11v12. From there, 6 teams move on in winners bracket and 6 teams down to the first losers bracket. From there, 3 teams move on in the winners bracket (1 team gets a bye), 3 in the losers bracket with 3 fresh teams joining them, and 3 down to the second losers bracket (1 team gets a bye). From there, 1 team moves on in winners to face the byed team, 1 team moves down to losers and joins the 3 victors there, and 3 teams move down to the second losers bracket to join the other teams there with 1 team having been eliminated. From there it continues until a team climbs back up from the double losers bracket to face the winner of the winners bracket and in order to be victorious they have to win 3 games back to back to back. I challenge anyone to find a flaw with this system.

Which SHL or SMJHL team was the best team to not make the finals this season and why?

Even as a Buffalo homer I have to admit that Chicago was 100% robbed of a finals appearance this season, which I believe would have been their first as a franchise. The games against Buffalo were close with some OT games but were occasionally dominated by Chicago and it showed with their 3-0 series lead that they jumped to immediately. Buffalo somehow pulled off the most improbable of comebacks with a reverse sweep capped off in spectacularly dramatic fashion. Robbing Chicago of a finals appearance that for all intents and purposes was fairly locked in and quite frankly, seemed deserved prior to dropping 4 series clinching games in a row.

A. Hamilton has the clear advantage in basically every position but the net, with Doyle having a marginal edge over Jobin experience wise. Buffalo can match up a line or so or try to mix and match their lines to match up every line, but it's either a large discrepancy within a matchup or two, or several small discrepancies across all the matchups depending on how thin Buffalo wants to spread their top players.
B. I'm not super involved in this but I'm fairly confident there is already a degree of this occurring, with both legit attempts to try to better match up and the occasional illegitimate ones that get called out and banned/punished. Especially since going into a series you might think you know what the opponent is doing, but if they change something up you kind of have to verify if your strat is effective against their changes and adjust accordingly. I personally am a believer in strategies that give long term effectiveness being the most successful, so I only see changes being viable in a situation where your long term testing has been made void by changes from the other side.
C.
D. Realistically given locations and what not, I think it would be cool to hang out with Zombo from Buffalo. We're both caps fans and live near enough to DC to go catch a game together and then go out for a drink together or whatever. Would be a pretty cool time. That said I'd be down to hang out with mostly everyone in the buff locker room since they're the people I know the most on this site.
