Hello SHL Community,

With the increase in active goalies in the SHL, Head Office is taking steps to improve the site experience and viability for young and backup goalies in the league. We had previously increased the percentage of minimum backup games with our increase to 66 game seasons. The next step in our plan is to implement salary cap relief for teams rostering Active backup goaltenders. The below is a summary of the changes:

Cap relief will be provided of 50% of the backups salary, up to a maximum of 2M.

Teams must apply prior to the beginning of the season to be eligible for this back up goalie cap relief. Head Office will approve or deny this relief based on the following conditions:

1- Backup is an active goaltender. For this rule specifically, we are defining activity as updating at least once during the season prior to which cap relief is given. This season will be defined from the offseason post until the end of the playoffs the next season. The player in question will also have to meet the standard definition of “Active” as written in the rulebook. We feel the need to have higher standards of activity for this cap relief to avoid someone coming onto the site just once to accept a contract.

2 - Start a minimum of 25% of all games. This is equal to 17 games in the upcoming 66 game season.

3 - Be a SHL rostered goalie for the entire season. This means that teams do not get further cap relief on send-down goaltenders that they call up to play back-up games.

4 - The backup goaltender must start fewer games than the starting goaltender.

5 - The backup goalie must be designated at the beginning of the season when the GM applies for relief, and cannot be changed midway through the season.

6 - The backup goalie must be in their draft + 2 season at the minimum. (Served 2 seasons in the SMJHL previously)

7 - Players on HomeTown Discount contracts are not eligible for cap relief.

If any of the conditions are not met, the team and GMs will be punished in the following manner:

> All goalie cap relief will be eliminated. Starter and backup salaries will count towards the cap in full. Regular salary cap penalties will apply if the offending team violates the cap.
> GMs will be fined their GM pay for the season and be placed on a 3 season probation.
> Team will be ineligible for active goalie cap relief for the duration of their probation.

Solid move forward to make having more than one goalie viable. Now awards committee start giving the GAA award to the team and not individual goalies

we want to make sure this isnt abused. What we dont want to happen is the GM's to create an unfair advantage against other GM's. HO discussed all the different ways we could see GM's trying to abuse the system, and closed them out, but just incase there is something we missed, we want them to get punished. Giving cap relief is a slippery slope if not handled properly

The fact that you're still an FA is ridiculous. Sorry you are having to go through that shit. I am glad I didn't recreate as a goalie again. Some bottom dollar bullshit you goalies are having to go through now.

im the luckiest one because i still have the option of going back to buffalo, even if i wanted to see what was around ... but i know im not the only goalie around, with bloomey also not having a team right now, so it blow my mind. I litteraly had 1 team contacting me other than buffalo, to tell me they cant offer anything, but wishing me a good fa. All the other 16 teams? radio silence ... unbelivable ...

i am just thinking about the fact that if a goalie ever have issue with their management, for any reason there is, they basically have no choice than to recreate, cause FA is impossible for them...

With the sliding pay scale and the dependence of defense (this hasn't changed much from STHS to FHM), it's really difficult for teams to justify spending more on a goalie if they're already having success too. Ultimately it leaves all of you in a huge lurch. Where you can go from being a McBride winner to possibly out on your ass if a team can play a cheaper but effective player and put that cash towards skaters. Even in STHS goalie wasn't really a fulfilling position, but now it's gotten to the point where you've got to be lucky and fall into the right situation early or you're going to drift around most of your career and maybe get a couple years around TPE cap as a starting goalie.

Really seems like an unsatisfying position anymore. I feel for goalies.

This won’t solve the issue.

Users should be discouraged to make a goalie. When creating a player/goalie show a clear message that there is a logjam of goalies and mention which positions are less filled.

I mean I was on the back half of my career, afaik you're a max earner? Something is seriously messed up in the league where a top tier goalie isnt extremely sought after by most teams. Whether its the cap or the update scale I don't know, but we've pretty much all reached the conclusion that something is wrong
