S57 PT #4 - Rivalry Week

Biggest rival for us Cudas has gotta probably be the Baltimore Platoon. We're both teams that are kinda sitting in the middle of a rebuild and fighting for picks and that coveted first overall in the draft as we both usually finish around the bottom of the standings. I cant say that either team is really all that great right about now, but perhaps in a season or two we'll be fighting for a playoff spot with each other and and maybe in a few more seasons we'll be fighting for the first overall in the division or even the conference. I'm personally pretty excited to see both rebuilds come to fruition and eventually have some kind of vindication for the longstanding suffering that the Cudas have gone through over the many many seasons. The dynasty that Michael Fitted has orchestrated for Tampa will end up crushing the rest of the east and taking over the whole SHL.

For this I’m going to go with my SHL team that I don’t yet play for but I think has the much bigger rivalry. The clear answer is the San Francisco Pride vs the Los Angeles Panthers. The reasons for this rivalry are pretty obvious. Not only are these teams both located in California, which tends to have some heated matchups, both of the teams are big cat related. I think that the fact that the teams are so close that it would lead to a massive rivalry that would contest any playoff based rivalry. The market of cat related hockey merch is on the line and the players and fans need to support the teams to ensure the success of their corporate owners. It also is important to mention that panthers are barely even a really thing, assuming you mean a jaguar then a lion would nearly DOUBLE the weight of a panther which it would easily demolish.

The Calgary Dragons would consider their largest rivals at this time the team known as the Edmonton Blizzard in the Simulation Hockey League. The two teams have both been battling for top of the West for as long as many can remember, and have a long storied history of arguing and sending cryptic insulting messages to each other. There is very much certainly absolutely zero reason either team would like each other, and they make sure to remember that when going to battle against each other. It would be very impressive to see more meetings between the two teams as Calgary has just loaded up on more players to make a serious playoff push and to cement their place in the top of the West as best they can. These playoffs will certainly be an incredibly interesting time as we will most likely get to see the two teams face off once again

There are no greater enemies in nature than that between the Whale and the Boat. From ancient times there have been great tales about boats vs whales, like that one time that bible guy got eaten by a whale while he was on a boat and then hung out with Pinnochio and his friends in the whale’s tummy.

The modern iteration of this historical struggle takes place in the SMJHL, where the Vancouver Whalers and the Anchorage Armada do battle for divisional supremacy. In recent years, the Armada seem to have had the edge on the Whalers, where the Whale just couldn’t put together a full game against Anchorage. Instead of trying to simply come out ahead in regular season games, the Whalers harkened back to the old proverb The Whale and the Boat which goes as follows:

All year long the Boat kept burying acorns for winter while the Whale mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. Then the winter came, and the Boat died, and the Whale ate all his acorns and also he got a racecar.

While the Boat put away regular season wins and won playoff series, they always eventually died without winning a cup. While the Whalers took their Ls and mooched off of the draft system to put together a championship team. And also they got a racecar.

This year seems to be very different, with the Whale regressing and the Boat once again a favorite to win the Cup. Will the Boat even the score in the FHM era? We will have to wait and see.

New England Wolf Pack's biggest rival is without a doubt either the Manhattan Rage or maybe the Tampa Bay Barracuda, I think their name is. These teams are known for going back ages, there's been constant playoff series against them, I think. If you ask anyone on the New England Wolf Pack team, they will without a doubt tell you that they hate both the Manhattan Rage as well as the Tampa Bay Barracuda. I think this fierce rivalry will go on for some time, I hope to see the teams play against each other in the play-offs in the future! It doesn't seem all that likely right now because Tampa and New England are both rebuilding, but we will see! It's just a matter of time until it happens. I know for a fact Ethan Price will likely rejueventate this rivalry as he single handily defeats the teams that the New England Wolf Pack play against.

Right now, I’d say that the Tampa Bay Barracuda have 2 rivals, if you can call them that yet. New England and Baltimore are our two closest things to rivals since we’ve been the “worst of the east” for a while now. With all three teams looking poised to kick out one of the top teams in the east at some point. The Barracuda, Wolfpack, and Platoon will be going at it in a new Eastern Conference in the future. Another team that we could have a rivalry with is the Atlanta Inferno. Simple geography can show why this is an ideal team to have a rivalry with. Neighboring states and in the same division. With a few playoffs matchups between both teams under our belts, I can see the Battle of the Southeast as a pretty solid and exciting rivalry. Then of course there are the LA Panthers who is gmed by @FuzzSHL so :p

For me personally, my rival team has been New Orleans basically since they joined the league. They came in around the last time the Jets were strongly contending for the cup and the team was primarily made up of people that I had played with in St. Louis. It added a lot of flavor to each playoff series against them when I could troll around with Slash and Nic. Specifically, we played against them in the Western Conference Finals of S48 and beat them in game 7 before losing to Buffalo. They outshot us 242 to 202 in that series, but we snuck the OT winner in 6 before blowing out 7 for an overall 20 - 19 goals in the series. Next year, we met in the conference semis and they blew us out 4-1. We kept it close through the first three, with 2 OT loses and 1 win (by 1 goal), but they won the war of attrition with another 1 goal win in game 4 and a 2 goal win in game 5. It's doubtful that this really registered to NOLA because they went on to lose in the conference finals that year and then got swept in the conference finals the year after that. Conference finals were probably a bigger rival than us by that point.

But also, St Louis is in my blood so fuck Detroit. Scarecrow Noises and all that.

Shit, I dont know who is the rival of Baltimore. I havent been around long enough on the team to grow hate for another team! Plus you have the added fact that we fucking suck, so like what does it matter who our rival is? We prolly gonna lose homies. So I can only think of two teams that would be my rival. The first team is Chicago Syndicate. This is more of a personal beef, since I left them in free agency to come here. Its hard to call it a rivalry, I dont have any animosity towards Chicago, I just want to do good against them just a lil bit more than usual to justify my decision. The only other thing I can think of is the Tampa Bay Barracuda. This is only because we both suck and thats the only team I can pick that we could ever have a chance at beating, so might as well pick them

I guess at this stage, Quebec City's most natural rival is Nevada. It's not that there's any real beef or bad blood between the teams, at least in my opinion or from my perspective. Just being the two expansion teams from a few seasons ago has put us on similar paths for now. At some point, that parallel will fade, but it might be after Zdenko Beranek's time with the team has come and gone and he's on to the wetter, hippie-filled pastures of Seattle.

A Quebec-Montreal rivalry would have been fun if the Militia still existed. I don't know Canadian geography enough to know if any of the existing teams in the SMJHL bring that same proximity. Hopefully in a season or two an "on-ice" rivalry can form between the Citadelles and an opponent. Rivalries are healthy, in my opinion, especially early on in players' careers during the SMJHL.

When it comes to the biggest rival in Panthers history, I look no further than the Texas Renegades. The two teams are bitter divisional rivals, even this season we are battling it out for 1st place in the Southwest with only 6 points separating us. Looking back through history though, there is a storied playoff battle. Unfortunately Los Angeles has been on the wrong side of history when it comes to their matchups against Texas in the playoffs. Texas has bounced the Panthers four times in the first round (S14, S20, S21, S34). While the Panthers have only managed to beat them only twice in the playoffs in S17 and S24. Both times LA was able to squeak out a 4-3 series win in the Western Conference Finals, the S17 victory resulting in LA’s first ever Challenge Cup. Texas has been the more dominant team when it comes to the post season, and have more cup victories in their franchise.

Edmonton has had many rivals in my time as manager, the Calgary Dragons as a same province battle of Alberta, the New England Wolfpack after they hired our Co-General Manager, and most recently the New Orleans Specters would be my choice as our current number one rival though, for the single handed reason that it takes zero effort for me to not like them. I can not put a single finger on why I do not like them so much, but it is as simple as if you are a New Orleans Specter, I probably do not much care for you. Maybe it is because I still hold a grudge because I think they tampered with half my team in their inaugural season, or maybe it is because in recent seasons we have been battling for the top of the conference. Whatever it is though, I can say with my chest that they are my personal choice for our number one rival.

The big playoff rivalry of Manhattan in recent times is Chicago. We have both won and lost against them, playing in games where it goes to game 6 or 7. The last time they played though was S52 where Manhattan came back from a 3-1 deficit in order to win the cup in the long run. They also beat Chicago in S51. I would also say a rivalry that is geographically is Buffalo, as we played twice in the past couple seasons, winning one and losing the recent one. Also I would say New England was kinda a rival but we haven’t faced eachother in a while in playoffs. For luke Thomason my rival is Tony pepperoni as a player as we are battling for the #1 spot in the S43 class in points. I would also say I am battling against myself to get to 1k points
