S58 PT #4 Redesigning the Rink

To make it more extreme the nets have been reduced to the size of 2 pucks, and the goalie role has been removed. Instead the goalie is now a roaming juggernaut, and if he manages to get you down to the ground and steal your stick, you are out of the game. Each team gets one juggernaut, and everything goes to slow down the other players for the juggernaut, slashes, trips all fair game. Additionally the with the most goals scored wins the game. The game starts with no one on the bench, everyone on the ice. Each period ends when there is one man standing on one team. In this new revision of the SHL, there are no penalties, anything goes and it resembles a gladiator arena for the happiness of the fans. Finally, to make it more marketable, if the score is tied there is no overtime, instead the coaching staff of team 1 and coaching staff of team 2 fight at centre ice, winner wins the game.

When ESPN picks up the Simulation Hockey League earlier this year, they expected viewership to be much higher than it is. Planning has already kicked off on how to change the game in order to get a more marketable product that will get more attention as an alternative to the National Hockey League. Among the many proposals, one stuck out as being a strong candidate to incorporate more NHL fans while also making some improvements to the core hockey product. No helmets! It is brilliant. We have all heard of how more protection for players has led to a more physical and aggressive game. By having players remove their helmets, they will think more about raising the puck, their sticks, and most importantly hitting to physically. It should help reduce downtime in games, less pucks going over the boards as players keep it lower to avoid hitting their teammates in the face, less stick-related penalties as players are more careful to avoid causing extreme injuries or death, and most importantly to ESPN, the players will be able to be seen by the fans and be more identifiable. 188 words.

As the game progresses, portions of the ice are removed and leave gaps in the ice that can trip up players or reset the play when the puck is lost. In the third period this will cause chaos with players only able to use narrow portions of the ice as they try to score. If a player falls through the ice that team is able to have someone come off the bench to replace them. If the puck is lost then a new one will be dropped at center ice. This will cause some chaotic play throughout the game and while the skill factor might take a significant backseat, this should make SHL much more entertaining for the viewers and appease the network's demands. Of course this may not go as smoothly as planned as it may result in injured players and absolutely no progress in terms of teams being able to build plays but at least it will be fun for the fans!

The SHL has been picked up by a relatively unknown network called the Outdoor Life Network. The network executives are very excited to bring this sport to their network, but they wish for us to make a few changes. First, every player’s helmet is going to be spiked making them look more fearsome like Vikings. While this might result in a few more players getting stabbed, it will have a great effect on limiting the amount of elbows and shoulders to the head and the concussion problem that the NHL has will not be an issue in the SHL. Next, many baseball fields have some unique/strange dimensions so why can’t hockey? For example, the Specters’ rink is being transformed to slope down at one end of the rink to imitate the fact that it is below sea level kind of like baseball’s old Tal’s Hill. I’m not sure how the players plan to skate on it, but I would guess Lyle Odelein III manages to get even more blocked shots.

No more hockey sticks is the first change. Every player would have to kick the puck with their skates like soccer. Of course we would have to increase the size of the puck in order for this to work correctly. Actually then would would be cool would be to make the puck bouncier. Of course this would make the goalies job easier so in return the goal would have to get bigger, and because of the that goalie is instead allowed to wear spiked shoes instead of skates since they have much larger range. However now the goalie is much more maneuverable so in turn you’re allowed to check the goalie. So you would need a player dedicated to defending the goalie and keeping him from getting hit. I think this would make the game much more physical. And in return we would lower the penalty for fights from 5 minutes down to 2.5 minutes to encourage more physical play.

When Michael Fitted isn’t playing hockey, he’s hauling tons of commodities in his 18-wheel truck. The SHL will now play games on top of Michael Fitted’s truck as he speeds along the highway. Teams will have to travel to wherever Fitted is delivering on that particular day and suit up for a game of hockey on the smaller rink atop his truck. There are no boards on this ice, which means that people fall off of the rink and onto the highway frequently, but the fans enjoy it so it’s okay. Pucks are often lost as well. As soon as the puck is dropped, the speed of the truck usually causes it to immediately slide off the ice. This form of the SHL is definitely X tream and the fans love it, but financially, this form of hockey may not be stable. It’s expensive to keep the ice on top of the truck frozen, and the league has to pay for damages whenever a loose puck or another player hits an unsuspecting car’s windshield.

During the recent deep freeze in Texas, somebody high up in the Renegades organization came up with the brilliant idea to move Renegades games outdoors on to a frozen lake. And it was a great idea at first, as the players all loved playing on the outdoor rink. But this is Texas we're talking about, and once the deep freeze started to abate, and as the temperature rose back to normal levels, the Renegades' rink began to thaw. Players started randomly breaking through the ice during games, and this spectacle was an instant hit to fans all across the world. Eventually, all the ice melted but the SHL didn't want to let go of its new found fame, so they mandated that the Renegades continue to play on this lake. Of course, without ice the lake was just water and the games resembled water polo more than hockey, but with the occasional drowning the games were still must watch tv.

It's time to do what I'm sure everyone has thought of at some point. That's change the shape of the ice to allow for multiple games to be played simultaneously. Instead of the traditional rink, this rink would be hexagonal in shape with six teams defending a side assigned to them. Format would see each team get their own puck and play with four skaters and a goalie and it would basically be a free for all where any team can score on any side they want. However each net doesn't return the same score when scored on. The net directly across your own net is worth four points and then moving in symmetrically each net is worth one less goal. So the nets on the sides touching yours would be worth one, nets in the middle would be worth two, etc. The kicker is that every time your net gets scored on, you lose points in relation to the number of points the offense gets. This means that you can be super aggressive and go for the nets further away, but you are also leaving yourself vulnerable to be scored on. It would make zero sense to watch but the cable networks logic is that they can show three times as many teams a game and that'll result in three times the number of people watching at home.

The SHL's cable transition will be improved by the addition of the tennis ball gattling guns from American Gladiator (it took ~5 minutes to come up with the name of the show). Each team will have one installed above the glass at center ice. They will be manned by the backup goalie, so the 4th line will have to man the door on changes.
The guns will have about 120 balls to use per period (maybe snowballs, so that the ice isn't filled with tennis balls). The balls can be shot at the ice (to disrupt the opposition, at the opposite turret gunner (to disrupt his or her potential disruption), or at the crowd to try and neutralize the home-ice advantage. All of the extra snow/slush will be scraped off during the TV breaks and frozen pucks.
While it might bastardize the game that many of us have come to know and love, we all know its just a matter of time until Hamilton breaks the sim engine again and we have to transition to something else.

Trying to change the rink and/or rules of the game of hockey for the better is a tough thing to do. I have been thinking of things but nothing seemed to work out well in my head. I have thought about making the goalie wear only one skate, raising the height of the ice on one side of the rink, even taking away the blue line to get rid of icing calls altogether. I have read some intriguing changes in this thread which would be interesting to see play out on the ice. I finally decided to just change the shape of the rink from an oval into more of an egg shape. This would shorten the are around the nets, but make enter ice larger for more play area for the players. I am not sure what effects this might cause, but its the best thing I came up with.

Alright, so - I have two ideas, with the "safe" option, and the "extreme" option for each.

You know those inflatable sumo suits that people put on, and then they battle with huge inflatable hammers to try and knock one another off the platform? You give one of those hammers to goalies, instead of a goalie stick. They are allowed to bonk anyone, and at any time.
Extreme alternative? Give them a cast-iron warhammer instead. The goalie can still swing at anyone, at any time.

To make fighting safer, the attempted fighters can both remove their helmets - that will signify to the ref that they want to enter the "Bonk Zone". Within the "Bonk Zone", skates, sticks and helmets are disallowed, but you get to beat the shit out of each other for 2 minutes straight in a bounce house, while play is running in the background. Once the fight is over, both players can go back to their bench, once they're dressed up and ready to play.
Extreme alternative? The "Bonk Zone" is just a concrete ring, and skates are allowed, as long as they're worn in the players' hands. The fights are now 5 minutes.

Trust me, you'll create a shit ton of viewership, and you'll help out the roster space issues some teams are having right now! Everybody wins!

Extreme? Well, to make hockey more intense and extreme there is clearly one easy option to do. No more penalties. First of all this would not only up the intensity of the game but also make it more tactical. You have to be mindful all the time about that blindside hit that could easily end your career if you're not careful. Or be ready to slash someone in their face cause they said you smell bad or something. Secondly, the fans love it. Violence and chaos sells and with this change every game will be at least in parts akin to watching wrestling or boxing or MMA. Now, some people might say that this idea is ridiculous and will increase the injury rates and be harmful for the players health. Now, not only are these people wrong, but they are very wrong. Removing penalties would actually decrease the injury rate, at least from hits, as a bad hit would result in your career being ended by mad teammates of the one player you just hit. Finally, who doesn't love to see dirty players giving dirty hits? I can't see this be a bad change in any way.

SHL should share TV rights to Europe too. I would change all games 4vs4, which will prefer more skillful players and will give more space to play hockey. After great gameplay, there will be fishing content and total weight every 1kg is considered as one goal. The Fishing content can take 60min or something like that and also that team who have most ridiculous looking player or fisher will get one extra goal. That extra goal one will be voting for people. If no one get any goals or fishes, then winner need to be decided as old sword duels at 1vs1. So each one team will name their player to take part of that duel and winner is that one, who get the touch first at opponent body. Of course players have to be costumes like knight which will be heavy as fuck. It's interesting see, how someone small player can carry heavy as fuck sword lol.
