S62 PT#6: Wrap-up
#61
(This post was last modified: 12-15-2021, 10:12 AM by bluesfan55.)

It’s been interesting to see how my old team the New England Wolfpack have fared. I’ll admit I left the team on shitty terms but I truly did enjoy most of my time there and to see them in the situation that they’re in, with a bunch of their promising young guys (to make me feel old, guys like wulf and kraz were just getting drafted when I’d arrived there) hitting free agency and probably not coming back, is kind of sad to see. I remember thinking they could be a team good enough to challenge Hamilton/Buffalo at one point; now to see them in a situation similar to that of Toronto is saddening.

Prompt 2:
There have been a lot of ups and downs this season that is for sure. Philly who was looking to make a bit of a bigger splash this year failed to do so. They were the under on their Casino odds and had a couple long rough patches that happened at times during the season. Despite all this there was some pluses. They still managed to finish 3rd in their division and if it had not been for puck luck in 2 overtimes and a last second goal against we might have had Tampa’s number in the playoffs. But alas we did not and it is back to a long offseason for Nathan and the crew. Another side note from the season it was a season for Nathan much like the Forge. There were some absolute highs and some absolute lows it felt. Having been given a DGR of 1 during one outing to then have a career year for points and plus minus. It was very much a season of some good mixed into some bad. It is all about focusing on the positives and looking forward to the future.

Prompt 2 since I didn't do every 1

As a long time sths participant, I have found the transition to FHM to be a curious one at Best. The array of skills to build a player really makes things interesting, but I find myself frequently unsure if certain skills are not as efficient as other skills, much like in STHS. For example, in Simon's version, Puck handling is a more efficient place to put your skill points than strength. In FHM, however, I don't know if there is a significant difference in efficiency between bumping a skill like stick checking to 17 versus pumping shot blocking to 17.

I think in broader terms, I still find the inflation in the shl to be off putting. I'm picturing a league where there is a hard cap of a thousand tpe, with different player types with different individual skill caps, to really inject more variety into the proceedings. I would think that would make managing a team a more fulfilling enterprise, as you wouldn't necessarily want to have three identical types of forwards on your top line, and with a hard cap, it would lead to some interesting builds in the FHM environment.

Prompt 1 is getting a tad bit out of hand, Ima go with the ez prompt 2. As for what I'm going to talk about, let's discuss the final stretch of Karlstraße Scholz' career. Hard to believe he'll hit the 1000 game plateau at the end of S64. It feels like just a few months ago I was figuring out his build, although that may be due to the engine and scaling fixes. I don't see myself challenging for any more awards with this player and with the Blizzard set for what'll likely be re-tooling season it's doubtful I'll see another finals. With my last couple of season I'd like to make a push and knock Tor Tuck off the top of blue line scoring in Edmonton. He obliterated a bunch of papa Scholz' records and it'd be nice to take one back from him before I retire. As for my future as a user I definitely plan to recreate, but I'll likely take a season or two off to reset my activity level, which has bottomed out as of late. Merry Christmas SHL!

Well I guess it was a good run. It’s more my style to be subtle but odds are next season is my last season as co-GM of Edmonton. I really can’t thank  Boom enough for giving me the opportunity but mentally and time-wise I am not currently in the right place to be a GM for a team looking to win championships. The only thing that worries me is no one wants to be a GM right now so if we don’t get a backfill I’m not going to abandon Boom and the rest of the team. But here’s hoping someone steps up and continues the momentum Edmonton is building!

Prompt 1
First, enjoyed the PT Prompt 1s and the ability to come back to a storyline each week. I will agree with another comment that it got kinda stale, just describing games and celebrations, would have been fun to explore difference aspects of the team (rivalries, road trips?), but overall neat. Really looking forward to more stuff like this from PT team!

PT#1
Aksel Fiske is easily placed on the Up-And-Comer team, as a S62 draftee. Some other notable players on his team include Ben Jammin, Mikko Rashford, Sconnie McHits, and Spack Jarrow. All fresh faces in the league, just entering their second year in their J teams. Although some Quebec teammates also made the Team, Fiske gravitates towards his fellow draftees, having built a rapport with them leading up to the draft.

If one takes the Up-And-Comers at face value, they would be easily written off. But what they lack in star power, they make up for in determination and endless passion for the sport and the looming challenge. Rashford’s already drawn up strengths and weaknesses of players on the other teams. Jammin checked Fiske into the boards, hard, at the first practice - but apologized and said it was force of habit. McHits has a mean slap shot and Jarrow has… rum. They’re a work in process, but they’ve got time.

PT#2
Aksel Fiske, along with the other Up-and-Comers, faced off against the Grizzled Vets. Their ranks included formidable foes like Tony Pepperoni, Luke Thomason, Mika Mayfield, and Cassius Darrow. I am sad to say it was a bloodbath. Dreams and ambition are truly no match for experience and grit. The game wasn't like what the younger players had experienced in the J's. The vets had been playing with and against each other for years and years. When the young players had to look up and shout calls, the vets could just drop passes and know their teammates would find it. The young players could outskate the vets, but they couldn't out maneuver them. Ankles were iced in between periods.

The final score ended up being 0-9 for the Up-and-Comers, who were disappointed but not downtrodden. This was an important match in the grand scheme of the game, and they'll go into their next matchup with some more tricks up their sleeves.

PT#3
The Up-And-Comers are getting along and have good chemistry, sure, but that's nothing compared to players who have known each other for decades. The Hall-Of-Famers never looked when they passed, had intricate plays that the youngsters didn't see coming, and there's something to be said for raw talent. The only think the Up-And-Comers could capitalize on was their speed and agility - the HoFs started getting gassed late into the second period and rallied for the third, but the youngsters never flagged.

In the future, they'll have to cover players better and keep an eye out for trick plays that they haven't seen before. It doesn't help that the HoFs played in a different league and it was an entirely different game - the agressiveness was not something the young players had really experienced. Losses are hard, but they're easier to shake off when you know you played your best, and your opponents were out of your league. The Up-And-Comers aren't out of the running yet, and now they really know what they're up against.

PT#4
The celebrations after the Up-and-Comers beat the Grizzled Vets are ongoing. It was hard fought, but the youngsters learned from their previous defeat. They practiced scenarios until they were second nature. When Fiske had the puck, he knew McHits would be on his right as they skated across the blue line. Jammin and Rashford would stick to the blue line and slapped shots until their sticks broke.

The game itself was a monster, everyone was on edge. The Vets scored first in the second period, after a tense first period. Jarrow answered back just before the end of the period, and the Up-and-Comers entered the third period hungry for a win. They got a break when Thomason tripped Jammin, and scored on the power play. Vets scored on a breakaway minutes later, and with two minutes left the youngsters pulled their goalie. They could skate harder than the Vets with another man on the ice, and with seconds left, they found their opening. Rashford slapped it hard and McHits tipped it in. Final scored was 3-2 and the Up-and-Comers celebrated with pizza. Many pizzas.

PT#5
Team Up-and-Comers arrived to the final showdown against the Superstars hot off a win and with plenty of wind in their sails. They had defeated the Grizzled Vets, they could conquer the Superstars with enough determination and teamwork.

At least, that's what they thought.

Players like Ryuuji Minamino and Emilia Bergman may not have years of experience under their belt, but they are at the height of their career, and they certainly played like it. Right off the first faceoff, Mitchell van der Heijden sent the puck towards Steve Harrington, who scored ten seconds into the game. Brick Wall splayed in its wake, and the replay showed he didn't have a chance.

It wasn't a bloodbath. Somehow, Rashford and Jammin managed to block the shots that Brick Wall couldn't and the third period started 2-4. McHits and Jarrow each manage to eke out a well-shot goal, with sleek passes made by Fiske.

The game finished at 4-4. After impassioned speeches by McHits and Rashford, overtime started. The Up-and-Comers played strong defensively, but couldn't get any shooting chances. It was on a breakaway, five minutes into the second overtime, that Minamino scored on a breakaway.

The younger players were disappointed but not devastated by the loss - they'd played better than many thought possible, and they had long careers ahead of themselves where eventually, they would be the Superstars.

Answering for Prompt 2:

Honestly it is really surprising that I'm already going into my second Christmas in the SHL, as silly as that may sound. The time has gone by so quickly and I really do not know how to feel about it, if I'm being honest. Like back in january my player was still in the SMJHL with the Berserkers, the next moment he's playing in his fourth season in the SHL with Seattle. Where has the time gone? I feel like these past few years time has gone by so quickly that it's really terrifying. Anyways, go Berserkers and go Argonauts!

This Season Liam Slate had a decent season. He moved to the Edmonton Blizzard in hopes of having some more personal success as well as team success. In terms of team success the Edmonton Blizzard had an okay season but had a lot of younger players who should take steps to be ever better next season. The Blizzard still made the playoffs and exited in round one. (In comparison the Toronto North Stars, the team Slate left had a better record but lost in round 1 too).

Overall, Liam Slate had a solid debut season for the Edmonton Blizzard. He scored a career high 30 goals. He has 55 points in total this season which is fairly decent. Next season should be better for the Blizzard as their defense should be improved due to the amount of rookies on the roster and their depth should be better.

PT1

Being asked to take part in this type of simulation is great, especially since I can put myself up against the SHL’s best, both past and present. While I would like to wish I’d be on the up and comers, or even the Superstars, I don’t believe I qualify, and therefore have been placed on the Grizzled Vets. I may be past my prime a little bit, but I still know how to play the game at a high level and make an impact.

Once I was placed on this team I looked around the room I saw some of the players on my team: Aaron Wilson, Michael Scarn, Tony Pepproni, and even Andreas Kvalheim. These are all phenomenal hockey players that I’ve had the pleasure to either play with, or against in my career, and each of them have impacted how I play the game.

Practice was actually very interesting, but also fun. You could tell everyone wanted to continue being at the top of their game, but there was also some lightheartedness. People joking with one another, poking fun at their games and it just felt like everyone knew what we were here for but realized they could have some fun since they’ve contributed to the game. It’ll be interesting to see how the team gels together, and how it works going up against different generations of players.

PT2

This tournament was something I was looking forward to ever since I got named to the Grizzled Vets squad and saw my teammates. I wasn’t totally sure who would be on the other teams, but I was looking forward to the competition and seeing how me and my teammates would stack up against the rest.

When we got on the ice to play the Up-and-Comers, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Firstly, I don’t really know many of the younger guys in the league, but I recognized a few faces prior to hitting the ice. Some of the young Panthers, like “Long” John Donair, Jimmy Wagner and Rock Strongo. I also saw some young Steelhawks, like Dogwood Maple and Evangelos Giannopoulos. I know these guys have some skills, so the game wouldn’t be easy.

Keeping up with the pace wasn’t too difficult, after all these guys are still a little young and we play some very good SHLers every night. We did manage to get the victory though, by a score of 5-2. I wasn’t the standout performer on the team, but I chipped in with an assist on a goal from Aaron Wilson. It was great playing with these guys, and I can’t wait to see what the next team has in store for us

PT3

While these Hall of Famers have been out of the game for a little bit, they sure as hell never lost the ability to play hockey. I think after the first couple of games we were feeling confident, we were playing well and really starting to find a rhythm together. Then it all came crashing down once we played the Hall of Famers.

They may not be as quick as they once were, but their smarts on the ice was a step above anything we’ve seen. They just know where to be at all times, the puck was constantly in motion and it felt like they weren’t exhausting any effort to play. It felt like when you’re a kid and you’re looking forward to playing against your parents because you think they’re out of shape, only for you to not be able to get anything going and get absolutely smoked. It was great to witness while on the bench, just to see the way they played and get some insight on what they were doing and why. While we may have lost, I learned a lot from that game, and hopefully my teammates did to for the next one

PT4

The Up-and-Comers are a great hockey team, and while we did come out with the win, we knew that it wouldn’t be an easy game. Everyone approached this game like the playoffs, and nobody took them for granted, even after beating them in the Round Robin.

The game was very close though. It felt like they continued to have their legs throughout the whole game, and the high pressure they were putting on us was something we had to adjust to. There was not a lot of open ice and because of the consistent pressure, there was no time for decision making, everything had to happen instantly. Harry Carpet was phenomenal for us, and he kept us in the game at points when the pressure was mounting, and the shots were piling on. He made a couple big saves, including a huge breakaway stop late in the 3rd period to keep us up by one. Everybody had a great game, but there’s no doubt that without Carpet playing the way he did, we wouldn’t be moving on to the finals.

PT5

The superstars, they’re definitely taking over the league. However, when you’re told to look at the top of the leaderboards to find them, I see someone that sticks out, the number 5 spot, Theo Morgan. Those superstars are definitely overwhelmingly good, but there’s a vet who continues to be among the best of them (it’s great that it just so happens to be me).

We knew taking on a team like the Superstars wouldn’t be easy, but the main difference was, a lot of us vets have been in tough games before. Tons of experience from SHL cup runs, IIHF gold medal teams, and overall just being more accustomed to the big stage and playing big minutes with the opposition’s best against us. It was a close game, and for a second I thought the game might slip away from us, but a late goal from Aaron Wilson allowed us to go into overtime, where we eventually won off of a beautiful play and goal from Elijah Jones. It wasn’t easy, but experience proved to be the key. What a tournament this was, and I’m glad I was a part of it with these guys.

Prompt 2:
I would like to thank @G2019 for all the hard work.  And, I would like to congratulate him on the new job and I look forward to dealing with him in a different light going forward.  Though he has been great, he is now Detroit, so he has to lose, as is tradition.  I want to do all I can to continue on that tradition to give him the real Detroit experience.  It may be hockey town, USA, but it hasn't been lately.  It is only fair that we give him what is deserved.  Like I said, good luck and I wish you all the success, except against my teams.  You will always have a place with the team.

100 words to just talk about the SHL? Well can we talk about Ben Jammin and his luck? He was swept in the playoffs 2 years in a row in the second round. He must be a bad luck charm. Hopefully it wears on before we play in MTL together. I can't have that bad juju on the ice with me. He would be a solid D partner though if he isn't actually bad luck. How about these player cards though? That is pretty cool. Idk if I would spend my monies on them, except to get my own card. I know other leagues have them though. I wonder if I can get a printed version of my card to hang on the fridge. If I made it as a fake internet hockey player that would be a big accomplishment.

PROMPT 2

Theres some stuff I'm getting fed up with in the SHL at the moment. The new regression is something that makes me salty more because I'm affected by it, and am losing 400 TPE next season, ending up at the bottom of a salary bracket going into an FA season which is annoying. Plus I've gotta say the sub-5 win seasons have got to be annoying for morale, which to me indicates we should've stuck with the forced playmaker idea in Simon T instead of switching to FHM. It would've screwed a few good teams out of playoff spots over the years, sure, but it would've made it easier to be a tanking team.

Prompt 1 - Pasting previous write ups:

As the wacky SHL scientists put Scott Thorny in the brain copy machine they noticed an error in the system: 'NO CONSCIENCE DETECTED'. The scientists were puzzled as they've never seen this error before. After utilizing their most advanced technical troubleshooting procedures (unplugging and rebooting the machine) with no avail, they came to the conclusion that Thorny is not a man. He is a consciousless sack of meat sent from prehistoric times to do one thing only: body slam his opponents as hard as possible.

The doctors noted the exceptional physical attributes and pure evilness in Thorny's soulless brain scan which basically just looked like a black box. They noted the potential in this vile being and decided to send him to the Up-and-Comers to unleash terror. Thorny rose from his bed and lay awake in the SHL locker room. With three others staring at him - his teammates! Who are these people? They went to the ice and began a journey of the Up-and-Comers from prehistoric history!! More to come!

Those grizzled vets came in strong and with a lot of confidence. After all, they're veterans! (not!). The boys and I trained real hard for this match. We knew it would be a tough one and we had to keep each other lifted in the locker room knowing we'd be pushing hard to make good hits and keep our offensive pushes strong. All the work paid off and what a level of an energy it was in the locker room after. We had tunes blasting and cheers all around. The boys and I booked ourself a real treat to celebrate. We'll be out on the race track this weekend doing laps in luxury sports cars. You know, just a way to focus on the road and clear our heads while having a good time. I'm personally looking forward to driving the 2021 porsche 911 because I always love this car and how it handles. On to the finals!
