S62 PT#6: Wrap-up

P2:

This season was much better than expected to be quite honest. After midway through the season LAP was playing at a .500 pace and was middle team in the Pacific Division. Then all of the sudden at the halfway point of the season the team took off. I think our record wen from 16-14 to 26-6. we had a hell of a finish for the season. I was equally impressed as to how well we fared against the top teams in the league. Making it all the way to the Conference finals against Texas. We lost the series 4-2, but 2 losses came in overtime. One bounce the other way and we easily could be playing in the finals right now.

After a disappointing end to the season, and as I reflect on another successful year in Chicago…I’m excited about the potential for next season. I’m really sad to miss our friends who are leaving.

At the same time, I’m really even more disappointed by the decision to change the TPE & regression in the last few weeks. As a player who would prefer to have a elongated career, it’s disappointing to have that shortened. Although I understand the intentions of the change, I’m disappointed because it means that eventually my player is going to regress even more aggressively during an earlier point in his career. I wanted to stay longer in the SHL because restarting with new players isn’t as fun. We now are going to need new player records eras to cover the change over period. Speaking of records, how about that goal scoring record this season? Phew!

Thanks Jove for my sig

This season started out great but personally took a turn. I got a new job so it's taken time away from SHL but in a good way. I'm excited as a player to now hold the record for most goals by a player for the Grizzlies. I know it won't last long, but it's awesome to have that honor, and have been the Grizzlies' first-ever draft pick. I'm really excited for the future as we just keep getting better. The team is amazing, leadership is wonderful, and every part of this experience is great. I've gone inactive before, but this team makes me come back again and again.

The regression changes have been a major frustration for me. This is solely to do with the fact that my current player, Oliver Cleary, is an older player. Being an S48 means that I'm going to go from a borderline elite defensemen to an average at best defensemen. I will be losing about 400 TPE from regression. I wasn't expecting to put Oliver Cleary into an early grave but with rosters full, it may end up being a situation where I sign with a bottom feeder to get some money for a recreate or retire early and start again. I just hope Baltimore doesn't win a title without me.

Prompt 2

It was a great first season with the San Francisco Pride. I have been on a ew SHL teams through Klompus' career and after one season I can definitely see myself sticking with this team until it's time to retire. I'm set on doing whatever it takes to make this career a long one and there are quite a few players on San Fran that I want to find success with. Kenrik puts in a ton of effort and Smith is one of the more dedicated members the league has as well. We've got a good group with the Pride and I want to see it work out for us.

This was a season to remember. Lots of highs and lows. We had the sad of Gunnar Soderberg riding off into the sunset. We had the happy of @ByrdeMan retiring because now he's finally free. We had the awe of Minamino ripping 60 goals - no one had ever hit 50 before in the history of the league. We had the Zerks going 12-1 en route to their third cup in franchise history. We got to see players like Mat Smith and Ryan Shepard have fantastic years and really come into their own. We had Mats Marner really finding his stride as he goes into his peak season next year. Then the sad of losing.

Prompt 2 -

Maybe it's just me but I really doubt it. The SHL has become pretty stale over the last season. Between Hamilton being in the finals YET AGAIN, some inconsistencies with things, and HO making some weird decisions. I just don't really know how I feel about the league anymore. I really want this league to do well but I'm already feeling more at home in the ISFL after only a few months over there. The league feels like it's on the verge of losing a ton of people and it's going to be painful when it does happen. What can we do? I think making good decisions to retain players, like increasing payouts and creating archetypes, are things that need to be done now. We need to stop letting teams test sim so much *ahem* Hamilton *ahem* and ultimately just make choices that make people want to be here. I love my team. Baltimore is kickass and the people are fun. But it's just painful to watch the league become so goddamn stale. Maybe it's just me, but I might be leaving sooner than later. Maybe once I start to decline heavily in regression. Only really sticking around for the Platoon Family. Sad fucking times in the SHL.

The omniescent force behind William Hartmann is displeased. She sees a giant cliff coming with the changes to regression, and knows that the 7-goal, 42-point season where Hartmann was one of the better defenders in the league at knocking pucks off opponents’ sticks might have been a flash in the pan. While it’s a change that should bring much-needed cycling to the league, it’s not an easy one to swallow. This season didn’t end particularly well either, as the Blizzard were swept out of the playoffs by Chicago despite the heroic efforts of Tyler Ward. Despite this, the locker room remains a pleasant and positive spot to be. Now to go watch a Netflix show about an au pair, her gardener girlfriend, and a mansion haunted by a lady in a lake. That sounds pretty interesting.

Prompt 1

Lyle Odelein III is definitely considered a veteran nowadays. Starting his 13th season in the SHL, Lyle has done a lot and seen a lot in the SHL. If he were to make a team of his fellow SHL veterans he would want to choose players he knows well, players from his draft class, S48. First would be his old St. Louis Scarecrow teammate, Mina Kandinsky. The Winnipeg forward has had a great career and is still a very relevant player in the SHL. Second would be Kaspars Claude. Lyle’s teammate in New Orleans for a few seasons, the aging defender would be an easy pick. Another teammate of Odeleins, a team Canada teammate, who has played with Lyle in every IIHF and WJC since he started, Gabriel Johnson would once again suit up with Lyle. That about does it for his S48 players, but Lyle would want to add another team Canada teammate, Dick Vlapper. While in the thick of regression this team would no doubt still be a force to reckon with. Their skill and experience would be a display and they would be very hard to beat.

Excerpt from Lyle Odelein's pre game speech to his fellow veterans before their match-up against the Up and Comers:

We've all been here, this game isn't anything we haven't done before.  We are no spring chickens in this locker room.  We have put in the hard work for years to get where we are today.  So many things have changed since our days in the SMJHL or our rookie seasons in the SHL, most of us have grown as players and leaders. We have had our ups and our downs.  We have learned from our mistakes over the seasons.  We may have slowed down a bit from our younger days, but we make up for that in our experience.  When that puck drops, I know that each and everyone of you will do everything in your power to play at the top of your abilities.  At one point we were the young ones, breathing down the necks of our elders, the tables have turned.  It's now our backs that have targets on them, I know that for myself, I am not ready to be taken over.  I've still got some fight left and I know that you all do as well.  Let's show these Up and Comers what it takes to get were we are today.  Let's show them what they are trying to become!!

A tough loss sucks. No two ways about. But a loss is just that, a loss. You have to leave it behind yourself as soon as you leave the rink. For us older guys, losing isn’t something new. Big losses can make a players career, for the good or the bad. This loss, to the HoFs, isn’t the end. It’s a building block. We know how good we have to play if we want to win it all, that’s a good thing for us Vets, knowledge is power and so have no doubt we will be back on top in no time. Some teams / players will watch tapes of this loss over and over again. Not Lyle Odelein and most of his veteran teammates. They know the HoFs will be making their own adjustments as well. They will be remembering the speed of their opponents, the accuracy of their passes not the plays they used to beat them with. They will be more than ready next time, will the HoFs be?

Grizzled Vets v. Up and Comers.

Experience and knowledge versus athleticism and skill.  The age old question that will never really have an answer.  The outcome of a game like this is a flip of a coin.  If the Up and Comers came out flying a took control to the game from the go, the Grizzled Vets would have a tough time keeping up with the younger squad if they hit hard a fast at the start of the game and carried their momentum right to the end of the game.  This did not happen.  The Vets also knew that they needed to take control of the game earlier.  As soon as the puck dropped, the Vets played the body and punished the Up and Comers every chance they could get.  They took all the steam out of the youngers players and through them of their game plan immediately. Doing this allowed them to score the first goal of the game and their know how and experience allowed them to hold on to that lead right until the final buzzer.  They added an empty netter in the last two minutes making the final score 2-0.  The Up and Comers came into this match up so confident, but they learned a very valuable lesson in this loss, never underestimate an opponent.  This loss will go a long way in turning these players in to the Grizzled Vets of the future.

The stage is set, the Superstars vs the Grizzled Vets. Two teams who are very similar. Not too long ago the Vets were the Superstars and in no time at all the Superstars will be considered the Vets. But tonight, the two will compete to see who is the best this time around. The Superstars come out flying to take an early two goal lead and at the end of the first that how it stands. But the 2nd starts with a second wind for the Vets. 2 quick goals by the seasoned vets shows they know what needs to be done to win. The third period starts at the 2-2 deadlock and 15 minutes in this game looks like it is destined for overtime. The Vets seem to be showing their age, slightly, and a failed defensive zone clearance puts the in a bad spot. But ZLyle Odelein does what he does best, he comes up huge with a timely block which surely would have been a goal. Odelein controls the puck after the block and finds a streaking Mika Kandinsky who breaks in alone and scores the go ahead goal. The Vets hold on and secure the win and the championship!! The Veterans put all of their skill and know how to work and got the job done

Prompt #2

It's been pretty frustrating during my tenure as co-head of Czechia. We work really hard every season to try to give ourselves the best chance of winning possible. I'm 100% in favor of increasing parity and helping the worse teams get an edge against the perennial winners (HAM, BUF, CAN, USA) but man it really seems like the rest of the teams got a bump from the changes that have been made thus far and we haven't. I think we really just need to change up our tactics but the way it feels is that we got the short end of the stick. It doesn't matter, we'll keep working at it.

Well, I'm excited to be going into my SHL career as a max earner, or damn near one, with a new position that I haven't done before in SHL. Being a part of an expansion team, only on their third (or fourth?) season is also exciting, as it leaves a lot of room to help build a great team with a great atmosphere at the SHL level, which is one thing I was happy to be able to do in the SMJHL with Great Falls. Especially coming up with close to 1000 TPE, the possibility of being able to take a stab at rookie awards in my first season also has me excited.

P2- My SHL journey has been a fun one honestly. I joined back in 2019 and it seems with the new regression First-Name Last-Name’s career is coming to an end. I think 1 more season and that’s it. I’ve met so many cool people and made so many friends, it’s been a blast. I honestly thought I was going to be playing much longer so this does come as a surprise but honestly I’m not too disappointed. IRL I’m about to graduate college so this comes at perfect time. I’m not sure if I am going to recreate but it’s been a fun journey! See you soon or not we’ll see.

Prompt 2:

It's been weird with how coming into the site during when COVID was starting to become more of a thing and now it's part of our daily lives, despite the attempts by society to continue to return to normalcy. With real life starting to become the focus for many people, I've noticed the effects its hard on even a busy place like NL. There's still no place like it but it certainly makes you appreciate how much time people put in before when there really wasn't any other choices. Still, I happily enjoy coming into the LR every day and night and can't imagine what life would be like without having that social outlet.
