Written, 3 TPE, GM stands for Great Man (150 words min.) No way I can pick just one GM from the best tandem the league has ever seen. Keygan and TommySalami are two HOF’r GMs and deserve some recognition. We can start with the fact that since S43 the Blizzard have not missed the playoffs, current longest active streak in the league. Add in a couple Challenge Cups in S45 and S49 with a few other finals appearances sprinkled in that didn’t go the team’s way. My history starts with them at the S54 Entry draft. Of the 4 players they selected, SnoopDog and I went on to play prominent roles on the team. One of the players was traded for a 2nd rounder in S60 which was then used to draft Lorec, one of the best players in the SMJHL during their reign. Their biggest claim to fame in recent history though has to be the S59 SHL entry draft where they landed 5 of the best players available. These players just made their SHL debut with a potential ROTY nomination or two. (173 words) Code: 6. Written, up to 4 TPE - Grab Bag: Pick up to 4 Challenge Cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words. Since I never played in the STHS era, hard for me to imagine what it was like to have to compete against the top teams. I do know a lot about competing in the FHM era and how almost impossible it is to beat one of the big 4 teams. So I think if you are one of the other 16 teams, you gotta say an FHM win is more impressive. (72 words) Code: b. Be honest, would we have seen the same final 4 as last year (Chicago, Texas, Hamilton, Buffalo) had BUF/HAM and TEX/CHI not run into each other in the second round? For the West I think it’s a safe assumption we would have had a TEX/CHI Conference finals. TEX already beat LAP for one, and I cant see SEA eliminating CHI or TEX in a 7 game series. In the East it’s a little harder to say, BAP might have been able to beat out BUF if they played? I don’t know that TBB is quite there enough to edge out either BUF or HAM. (74 words) Code: c. Hamilton has a population of roughly 5 people. Where would you relocate the franchise? As far as IRL goes, Hamilton has a similar population size as Winnipeg, so I guess we better look into relocating the Aurora too… In the spirit of this task, I’d like to see the team stay in Canada so lets move it Ottawa. Create a rivalry with Montreal while maintaining the rivalry with Toronto (probably to their chagrin). Despite the Senators being particularly bad, the fanbase is pretty passionate and every game I’ve been to has been pretty close to a sellout. (83 words) Code: d. Who is the best player to NOT make the final in the past 2 years? I’m going to pick Karl Krashwagon. Former MVP winner has never made a finals appearance let alone in the last two seasons. 152 points including 70 goals; I know this doesn’t really look like much when Minamino put up 60 this season, but it’s the defensive side of Krashwagon’s game that catches my attention. Hard to pick though when it’s the same two teams every season, most of the leagues top talents fall into these parameters. (76 words) Code: 12. Milestones, up to 3 TPE S62 Milestones Code: 14. Written, 3 TPE, Blow it up (150 words min.) Using the Player Analyze 2.0 TPE tracker and assuming its correct… there are two teams that this prompt makes most sense to apply to; Hamilton, and Chicago. At least in my opinion. With the recent changes to regression both teams core group of players that have helped their teams win cups are all about to get slapped pretty hard with TPE losses. Looking at their prospect pools, there isn’t much in the pipeline for either team. Hamilton has one player near the top of their draft year, with two more players near the bottom. Chicago is an even worse position with nobody really at a noteworthy level of TPE earning. Hamilton knows how to get the most of their players though so they probably have some time to figure out some trades and stay relevant with the competitive teams. Even if they had to take a step back, I doubt it would be considered a rebuild. I think Chicago missed their chance this season and without a few moves will for sure find themselves in a rebuild. Again though, I expect them to be back dominating the league before long. Code: 15. Written, 2 TPE, The yearly IIHF task (100 words min.) Since I didn’t get to do my real IIHF predictions because of the odd decision to just rush into regular season sims on a Sunday immediately after pre-season I’ll do my predictions here. Canada once again wins the Gold medal over some team that’s probably Great Britain because like SHL, its always the same teams at IIHF. This season though, my player is going to play an important roll for Canada now that he is on the top line and getting some power play time. I will lead all players in goals most likely and be in the running for tournament MVP. Japan doesn’t advance to the medal rounds and Ireland now that they have a real Fed Head make a surprise appearance and maybe even medal. (127 words)

3 prompts +9 1 milestone +1 Task 20) So for my CW affiliate claim I’m claiming the tasks I used claims from the World Simulation Basketball League, one of the newest sim leagues out there. Over in the WSBL, season 1 has only just recently concluded, with Blasoons Seattle Orcas taking the opening Championship, and so far it has been excellent. It is fun and unique, as it is the only basketball league with the same earning system as the SHL, PBE and ISFL. The league runs on DDSPB21, created by everyone’s favourite, Wolverine Studios, and despite people’s reservations regarding the football version of this sim, it’s actually no that bad in comparison. In the league are lots of faces you would know from various other leagues, but all mashed up on different teams. Now is the perfect time for any potential prospects to join, as we are in the midst of expansion as well as the S2 draft coming soon, meaning lots of roster spots for potential newcomers. +3

Registered x9 Duck of the Year Code: Code: quank Code: 2. Written, 3 TPE, GM stands for Great Man (150 words min.) Another CW, another chance to pump up Atlanta and @hotdog. Even when trying to stink and lose games, Atlanta ends up making the playoffs. This has led them to constantly picking in the early teens, yet when you look at the season leaders in TPE, Atlanta has 5 users in the Top 10 of multiple classes. @sakrosankt is #4 for S56, @Jepox is #3 and @Mr. Finland is #5 for S57, myself is #1 for S58, @micool132 is #4 for S59. This is incredible value for picking late in the 1st rounds. There have been a bust or two, but that’s to be expected. His hit to bust ratio is one of the best in the league. I keep pounding the table, but I really do think we’re coming dangerously close to taking the league by storm because of the drafting skills of @hotdog. Oh yeah, and @goldenglutes has a pretty cool bot that he made that’s way better than Asron Bot. Code: Code: CW giveth to @hotdog and CW taketh from @hotdog. The biggest bust that I've come across since entering any league would be that of a man named Phil aka PhillipFresh (I think that's his username). I don’t have the time or capacity to go back and look when he was picked, but I know it was in the first round at maybe pick 12, give or take 3. This kid was such a great interview that I thought he was such a homerun pick that I myself drafted him in the first round in the ISFL (again around the 12th overall pick). The two drafts were about 1 week apart, and I couldn’t believe he fell to me. Literally 6 hours after drafting Phil, he sent out a multiple league wide note saying he was retiring from all leagues. Wow, thanks hotdog! Great advice! Oh and also @Leppish. I say nice things to him in the LR, but he can’t even earn as good as a duck who was drafted 5 picks after him. He always needs to be reminded by Lil’ Jon to do his PTs as well. Code: Code: a. Well seeing as how I have neither, I don’t think I can come out and be picky or stick my nose up at the option of which cup is worth more. Gun to my head, if I was forced to choose, I would choose death because I will not be forced to make a decision. b. Uhhh, ya think? No doi we’d have the same matchups. We’re promised parity and we haven’t gotten it yet. I know HO is doing their best to make it work, but there’s just some limitations and it’s a hard task for them to take on. So while I must commend those 4 teams for taking advantage of the sim swap, it is getting a little tiring. c. I’m pretty sure the population is only 4 now that Little Old Miss Ethel passes after eating too much uncooked corn on Thanksgiving. That said, I would still move them. Probably to the north pole so players are so cold and would want to leave in FA and not come in FA. This would definitely help parity if the players were essentially forced off the good teams. While we’re at it, move Buffalo to Antarctica and Chicago to Seattle. Yeah I know they already have a team, but that place sucks too. Texas can stay where they’re at, because that place is wretched too. d. The best player, now this may be controversial, to not make the finals is Lassi Suhonen. This dude had a +/- of NEGATIVE EIGHTY SIX! That’s truly remarkable. Best in the league by 4. His shot percentage was a nice 6.7% which is horrifying for a defender, but the kicker is, this guy plays right wing. Legendary. Code: 12. Milestones, up to 3 TPE Link to Milestone Post

This is the name of my PBE player, and a combination of the names of my two kids. It only makes sense that this player will lay huge hits, as my two toddlers can't keep their hands off of each other and are constantly tackling and pushing. I think Brandonson would have a good career and be a defensive stalwart for a team...let's say the Tampa Bay Barracuda. My second player would be a goalie, Big Stops. With emphasis on glove and reflex attributes, Stops would excel at making the tough saves and highlight plays, many times single-handily keeping his team in games. He would do great given the team in front of him, but ultimately wouldn't gain too many accolades due to poor team performance for Manhattan Rage. My third player would be a showboating, high-scoring center named Dangles McSnipes. You know the type: only cares about his own stats, never passes, only cares about headlines, etc. While McSnipes would score his fair share of media attention, his team would struggle because of him. That team is the Winnipeg Aurora. Finally, an offensive-minded defenseman named Gimme DaPuck would drive his coaches crazy. DaPuck would find himself caught too out of position and looking to attack far too often, which would have him relegated to third line duty for the Seattle Argonauts, who somehow are good enough to win despite him. SMJHL GM Sundress Spouse Code: 2. Written, 3 TPE, GM stands for Great Man (150 words min.) 2 - 3 TPE I’m gonna shout out Jax @SecondSucks22 and Jess @sköldpaddor here. They dragged Nevada from the depths of the SMJHL kicking and screaming to a team that won their first ever playoff series against GFG and almost upset 1st seed Vancouver this playoffs. The peak is this coming season. All of the players from the legendary S60 entry draft will be on their last season and its do or die time before the plunge back to the J basement. The legend of JLC will be missed but a few good picks from last seasons draft (including LEG) will be much better this season and help fill the gaps left over by JLC and Harrier. Nevada's S60 class will go down in franchise and Js history as one of the best of all time. And rumor has it that Jess has discovered some new FHM exploits that have yet to be found by Hamilton or Newfoundland or any of the other dynasties. Code: 6. With what technology is able to accomplish these days in Tottenham’s stadium in London and the renovations to the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. You could pump billions into a brand new mega Azteca stadium to support soccer, American football, basketball, and hockey. d. Gunnar Soderberg. Dude is a legend. I know he’s not flashy on the stat sheet, but what he brings to a team in the intrinsic values of leadership and discipline. Chicago was always in the running with him playing and he will be sorely missed. He was a great SHLer and it’ll be exciting to see where is kid goes to this offseason. Code: 12. Milestones, up to 3 TPE 12 - Milestones 3 TPE Code: 13. Written, 3 TPE, Parody (150 words min.) 13 - 3 TPE A fourth line. Teams like Hamilton are so good because they only need 9 offensive skaters. There needs to be trade offs when creating a roster. Having good players on the same line should create holes on other lines. Good teams only need 9 good offensive players. Then their rosters have no holes. You force GMs to have a fourth line that has to be set to a required minimum minutes. Of course players are going to complain when they have 7 minutes of ATOI, then put in the time to get your TPE up so your not a fourth liner. Would you rather play on a fourth line or watch Hamilton win every season? Plus with the new regression changes wouldn't you rather be called up a little earlier from the Js? On second thought I just became a J co-GM so don't do this idea. I want my players as long as I can keep 'em. Code: 14. Written, 3 TPE, Blow it up (150 words min.) 14 - 3 TPE New England. For two seasons now they’ve been third fiddle to Hamilton and Buffalo. If New England was in any other division they would be division winners. I don’t see Hamilton or Buffalo ever being bad, so New England is going to have to start being ruthless. Start running scripts. Only draft Checking, Balance and Speed. Force Takeways and bully the other team. I think @"luketd" is going to blow it up. Take a season or two and rebuild New England to unseat Hamilton and Buffalo. The new management will bring a new look on how to do things. Luke is dedicated and old guard. He's ready for the toughest challenge yet in the SHL to take out Hamilton and Buffalo in their own division. It'll start possibly this draft with some wicked trades. Then wait for next season when every recreates due to regression changes. It really is a long game Luke it playing here. Code: 15. Written, 2 TPE, The yearly IIHF task (100 words min.) 15 - 2 TPE I think Finland and Norway are having resurgences and it’s almost come out of no where. For the past few seasons Great Britain and Japan have been dominant, but I think both are on the decline at least for a season or two. But Finland has been strong in the WJC for a few seasons now and those players will come up soon. Norway has been a underdog in the last few seasons of IIHF and deserve a medal soon. As for USA and Canada? Who knows? It’s weird that the teams with the largest player pools seem to struggle. Great Britain will slide for a season or two, but I think they will bounce right back. 16/16

Where do you think these changes have gone right, where do you think they have gone wrong? Would you ever want to go back to a previous way of doing things? Do you think the SHL is fine as is? There is one, new and egregious rule change that has gone wrong. And that rule is the new regression rule. I will beat on this drum all day until I turn blue in the face and everyone in the league wants me to disappear forever for fear of having to hear about regression. You want to make the SHL more lifelike, sure that’s fine. But for the love of god can we please not continue to have a system that punishes players for wanting to continue on with a single character for more seasons. As much as I absolutely adored my latest trip to the SMJHL, the fact of the matter is that there are many users who don’t like to create a new player. They don’t want to have to start all over from scratch and they want to keep the player they are currently building. By nerfing those players into the sun with a heavily loaded regression schedule, it takes the fun out of the league for those users who want to build a player for longevity and not for single season dominance. The FHM J feels like it strikes the best balance between rewarding GMs and players and allowing for teams to compete with each other. b. 56 words - Probably, though I think that Los Angeles, Tampa, and Baltimore all showed notable relevancy this season. I don't think any are top 3 teams, but they're relevant enough to at least make teams sweat at this point. Having these teams meet in the Divisional Finals masks some of the parity issue in the league right now. c. 64 words - I would move the Steelhawks to Washington D.C., though not just for the low hanging fruit of D.C. being associated with slimy politic and questionable integrity. I think most hated teams in sports end up from the east coast metro areas and it's weird to not have that in the SHL. Boston, New York, Philly, and Baltimore are all taken, so Washington it is. d. 53 words - The S53 gang. Guys such as Minamino, Wagner, Harrington, Duncan, Sutherland, Juke, and Magnus are some of the best players in league history, and many of them are carrying teams to great heights, but their peak seasons are left with them facing off against the likes of Texas and Hamilton again and again. Quote:12. Milestones, up to 3 TPE https://simulationhockey.com/showthread....pid3151124 Quote:14. Written, 3 TPE, Blow it up (150 words min.) The low hanging fruits are Chicago, the old boys about to get pounded by regression, as well as Toronto and New England, both teams potentially struggling to hold on to talent as they bring in new management teams. The team that's flying under the radar but who should still blow it all up is Philadelphia. The organization is already losing Luke, their S54 core is getting hit by the new regression plan, and while they were trending upward I don't know if the old half of the core is good enough anymore. They have a slight window coming up, but if next season starts rough I could definitely see them looking to move valuable components to teams looking to compete in the new look league that we fast forwarded to. Trading for upcoming picks will be additionally valuable given the number of recreates that might be expected, where Acsolap could recreate into one of those classes similar to what JayWhy and Ace have recently done. 165 words Quote:19. Written, 3 TPE, Groundhog Day 150 words min Another shot at S61 would be great not gonna lie. The season was good but could have gone even better. Wagner had a breakout season to the point where he might be breakout player of the year in the SHL but he could have been in the running for a most valuable player award. Los Angeles won the division and took Texas for a good ride in the Western Conference Final, but failed to break the groundhog curse. Finally, Carolina had a legitimate title bid and played the eventual winners closer than any other J team. A different timeline could have been a peak season for my time on the site, a very orange pair of championship weeks, top honors in both leagues, all while continuing to be a rambunctious pain in site leadership's ass with my critiques and ideas. While I would love another shot at the season, I'm happy with how things turned out and think there's still more to be done. 164 words

Verification word: noodles 2. GM Stands for Great Man (3 TPE) In my personal opinion, @"sve7en" is the best GM in the league. His ability to pull together a crew of lovable weirdos season after season into a competitive, exciting team is unparalleled. Off-season trades? Nailed it. Hasn't made a bad one yet. But I think his greatest strength is in his drafting. Sve7en has a terrific way with people, and is an excellent ambassador for the league. Part and parcel with being a J GM, I suppose, but his ability to sift wheat from chaff and make knock0-out draft picks season after season is amazing. In my entire tenure with Carolina, all of his draft picks have been super cool people, and did a ton to add to the already excellent, friendly, welcoming locker room culture. The locker room is the greatest strength of the Carolina Kraken, and this is all due to Sveven. He has cultivated such a positive, supportive environment in Carolina that I truly can't imagine having been drafted anywhere else. As far as a landing point in the league, Carolina is the best gateway into Sim Hockey, and Sveven is the best guide. 3. Draft Busts (3TPE) It's difficult to call it a bust, but the biggest disappointment that I have been witness to during my time in the SHL so far has been the tragic loss of the Carolina/Montreal gaoltender Meeka Keprosoft to inactivity. Meeka had an impressive debut with the Carolina Kraken and was selected in the SHL Entry draft my the Montreal Patriotes to eventually replace aging Montreal tender Goodman. Meeka had some excellent games, and stole quite a few wins for the Kraken. He made a HUGE splash when he was called up to the SHL to play some games for Montreal. Meeka played like a god between the pipes; barely out of his rookie season and stealing wins in the league above. There was no ceiling for hopes and expectations. And then, as is the way with many SMJHL friends, he vanished. Meeka was on track to become a star goalie in the J, and his career with Montreal could have been amazing. Sadly, we'll never know. 12: Milestones (3TPE) 15. The Yearly IIHF Task (2 TPE) This year, I firmly believe Canada will be the WJC Champion. They have had a strong start to the tourney, under excellent management since that hack Benpachi didn't re-apply. They have a strong, deep roster and they're playing well. I think they have a solid chance to take it. Roddy B, their captain, is continuing his time-honoured tradition of doing absolutely fucking nothing in international play. Takes penalties, gets some (very few) points and presumably does a lot of skating around. We can only hope he matures as he prepares to compete for a spot on the IIHF Team Canada. Champion? Sure! MVP? Not a snowballs chance in hell. 18: Apocalypse Now (3TPE) My 4 other players, in addition to Roddy B, are as follows: 1. Christ Anev: Chris Tanev with a halo, our lord and savior. Full-on stay at home defenceman. I would aim to max out shot blocking and positioning as my main priorities. I think Christ Anev would have a place on any SHL team. Stay at home defenders are not the most glamorous players, but they are extremely useful. I predict he'd go in the second round of the draft, but quickly become a fan favourite. 2. Jacques Strappe: a combo agitator/ power forward. The diminutive, 5'8 Quebecer is out to start fights and bite ankles. 3rd round draft pick, leads league in penalty minutes in rookie season. Contributes offensively, enough to hold down a 4th line spot on the squad. 3. Hugh Mann: this pefectly orindary human being from Placeville, USA, is definitely a human. He plays center and despite being oddly tall and thin, and not understanding pop culture references to things made after 1973, he is a solid draft pick (and also very human, did I mention that?). 4. Threesheep Jackson: obligatory goalie, he is simply three sheep in a trench coat. Surprisingly effective at saving pucks. Short career, ended tragically short by the ravages of the short lifespan of sheep. 21. No Take Backs (2 TPE): I nominate @"Jimmysmo27" for the new PT director position. My decision is based on on the following criteria: 1. It would annoy Jimmy. Like, a lot. And that would make me laugh. 2. He is a super creative and funny dude, and the PTs would for sure be fun. 3. He has beef with Granny, and I can see an entire season of PTs dedicated to having the entire league write smack-talk about Granny. In any case, the PTs would definitely be something new and exciting. Sorry Jimmy, but you've got the job forever. The headaches are on the house! Written, 3 TPE, Parody (150 words min.) I'm partial to 4th lines with specific line ice time minimums so players don't get just 5 minutes a night. Another way would be to incentivize more than min contracts. Any team that really wants to compete has to have all min contracts and that seems unrealistic. I liked ReD's suggestion about tying contract value with TPE, incentivizing asking for more money to get more TPE. This way players choose between individual success and team success potentially. My fear is that this system could go overboard and GMs won't be smart enough to blow all their money, leaving active users without a team. This would be worse than the current system if it happened in my opinion. I think 4th lines would encourage players to move to other teams if they want individual success to get a 2nd line spot rather than a 3rd line spot on their current team. As with any system, a lot of refinement is needed and someone will find a way to cheat the system eventually. +3 TPE

There's a user that I remember from my draft class: uhh. He was drafted 11th overall by the Hamilton Steelhawks, and I remember hoping that the team that drafted me (the Jets) would manage to pick him up. The reason I was so high on him was because he was an active user at the time and had some good writing chops, as evidenced by posts in the media subforum and via PGTs (back when they were a thing). He wound up going IA not long after his first seasons with the Steelhawks, and I don't actually know if they would be a better team with him considering they wound up winning a thousand Challenge Cups anyway, but it's interesting to think of what could have been. Speaking of the S50 draft... Ricky Bobby was taken by the Jets and was looking to be an important member of the rebuild until he completely ghosted us, which is a shame but I get that sometimes people lose interest. Quote:6. Written, up to 4 TPE - Grab Bag: Pick up to 4 Challenge Cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words. a. I don't really think it matters. I would certainly take any cup win at this point, but I think if I had to choose with a gun to my head I'd choose a win in the STHS era. Why? Because the results back then seemed much more random than they are now. The teams winning in the recent FHM era began the season pretty much knowing they'd get to the conference finals at the very least, and I think that predictability takes some of the magic out of deep cup runs. b. Yes, yes, a million times yes. There was no doubt in my mind that two of those four teams would be facing off in the finals this season. As painful as it is for my player to see retirement come sooner than anticipated due to a change to regression rates, there needed (and needs) to be changes to ensure that the same four familiar faces aren't meeting in the finals in the future. It's monotonous, repetitive, uninteresting and downright demoralizing for players not on one of those four teams. c. I would have said Montreal, easily, were it not for the fact that the Patriotes exist now. So instead, I'll go with another city with five people: St. John's. It's the capital of my home province, and even though Newfoundland has a team in the SMJHL already, I think it would be neat for the province to have one in the big leagues as well. Of course, it's never going to happen, because there's no reason why one of the least populous provinces in Canada should have TWO teams before Pittsburgh has even one, but it's fun to think about. d. Karl Krashwagen. He's by far Baltimore's MVP and it's criminal that he hasn't had the chance to show off the kind of clutch playoff performer he can be. This is the kind of player that can single-handedly turn a playoff series for his side, and Baltimore has been a contender I believe, so it's not like he was all that far from the finals as it is. Hopefully he gets a chance once the top four teams slide down a little. Quote:12. Milestones, up to 3 TPE Milestone claim link here Quote:14. Written, 3 TPE, Blow it up (150 words min.) Toronto. It's hard to say that because it's the team I've been a part of for several seasons now, but unfortunately the window has passed and it's time for the management (whenever the team gets one, giving the SHL's issue with finding willing GMs) to get much younger. It sucks, because I would have said we had a couple of more seasons in us to contend, but it's especially out of reach now with the changes to regression. I think in the end the thing that killed us was a lack of knowledge about FHM, and the lack of a coordinated game plan to tackle team building, game-wise. The LR had a great group of people in it, but we didn't really have people that knew the ins and outs of the sim engine and had time to meticulously test strategies and line combinations to maximize our chance of winning. I think the future can still be bright for the North Stars, but it's going to take a few seasons where it's torn down and rebuilt anew. |
