S62 Championship Week
#1

Milestones should be up soon as well, and the link will be updated in the OP

Renegades Steelhawks

Here are this season's tasks for CW. The maximum is 16 TPE. Mix and match whatever tasks you desire, but the maximum TPE to be earned from this is 16.
The deadline is Tuesday, December 28th at 11:59pm CT.
Please copy/paste the prompts (including the # of TPE) into your post; it makes it much easier to grade and track.

This PT is for SHL players and send-downs only; it is not for SMJHL rookies or SMJHL prospects.

You are allowed to link 4 tasks from ISFL, PBE, or WBSL CW. Every ISFL, PBE or WSBL task linked will be worth 3 TPE for the SHL’s championship week task. (Maximum of 12). *if you’re claiming this and have a different username on the affiliate's site then you need to state that in your post to get credit.* Announcement

Please feel free to PM with any questions or concerns.

hahahahahaha remember this task from last season? The one where everyone was like "nah we're good, tampa and BAP will be in the finals soon and you'll see that the old guard will make way for the new young teams". Now that we have the exact same fucking teams in the final again, let me ask, is parity an issue in the SHL? How do we combat this?

Code:
14. Written, 3 TPE, Blow it up (150 words min.)

In the not so distant future (s64), 4 Texas Hamilton finals in a row have seen most of the SHLers quit out of spite. Only a select few remain. Head Office reeeeaaally likes having 20 teams so they have now allowed every user to have 5 players to fill the void of everyone who left. Name your other 4 players that aren't your current player, select their positions, and decide their focus and path in the league. Postulate where they end up after the draft and how the players pan out.

You log on to the SHL. Oh shit gotta do your Finals Predictions. Yay Hamilton Texas finals, love shl parity. Weird, the title says s61 finals predictions but its s62? But wait, all the PTs are labeled s61, we're on activity check #388, and no one is complaining about regression. You must have woken up back at the start of the S61 Finals! I think that r1c3bowl22 was a pretty decent GM for the stints he was GM for. As a co-GM of West Kendall Platoon, he helped the team reach the Challenge Cup Finals in his first season as part of the front office. To make this even more interesting, he was part of the tandem of GMs that won back-to-back Lance Uppercut awards in S25 and S26. He then left West Kendall due to personal reasons and took a couple other GM positions around the league. Had it not been for Quinn being a multi as one of his first rounders while GM of the Colorado Mammoth, I think those teams could've been really good. r1c3bowl22 then went on to win the Joe McKeil (best coach), Lance Uppercut (best GM), and President's Trophys in his first season leading the Seattle Riot. Again, he didn't stick around long, or win the ultimate prize, but he definitely has top coach pedigree.

There are a lot of "could-have-been" draft picks in the SHL, but let's have some fun thinking about someone that busted hard. Write about their potential and where they were picked, and how that franchise could look *if* they had in fact panned out.
This is actually very easy. I think one of my players, Herb Robert, was a very big draft bust. At times, he was a very, very good player. But, overall I think his career was very disappointing. Take into consideration, I started the player under a new username so that people wouldn't pick me because it was me. Unfortunately, people found out anyway and I was picked 7th overall in the SMJHL entry draft. It was fine, as I ended up living up to my name and winning the Top SMJHL Rookie trophy. I was then drafted 2nd overall by the Seattle Riot. At second overall, if you don't become an SHL superstar, I'm sorry but you're a bust. Robert ended a very short SHL career with 309 points in 450 games. Not terrible, but definitely not what you want to see from a second overall pick. If I had been a second rounder, then that would've been a great stat line.

c. Hamilton has a population of roughly 5 people. Where would you relocate the franchise?
d. Who is the best player to NOT make the final in the past 2 years?
a. I don't really understand why an era would matter. A Cup is a Cup. Of course, I was so much more into sim leagues during the STHS era, so I guess winning back then would've been really cool. I was also a GM for a while in that era, so that might imply I would've had a big part in winning the Cup.
b. I'm going to say yes? It seems like there are a few teams that sort of run the show these days. Baltimore (West Kendall) are still a top team and could take on anyone on their best day, but it seems like that handful of teams has figured it out under this new sim engine.
c. This is easy. I would relocate the team to Ottawa. It's a major city in Canada, much more than Hamilton will ever be able to say. I'm surprised that the SHL and SMJHL have never had a team in Canada's capital. Even Baltimore is at least kinda close to D.C. Move Hamilton to Ottawa asap. It's been long enough.
d. Honestly, I don't know many players in the league that aren't on my team (give one point to the toxic's in the league). So I'm just gonna say my player was pretty decent. For a semiactive member, Herb Robert was actually very productive. He never lived up to his draft pick tho.

Now that we have the exact same fucking teams in the final again, let me ask, is parity an issue in the SHL? How do we combat this?
I think parity will be very hard to achieve. Because there are so many things that go into making a good team. If you gave every team the exact same lineup, but with differing strategies and line combinations, you can expect a large number of differing results. Assuming you were able to get similar results from different strategies, then I think giving teams more cap room to help semiactives make their players more competitive will certainly help with parity. It'll raise the overall skill level of the league and make it tougher for older teams with members with ridiculous bank accounts to team up with low salaries. I think it would be interesting if we had SMJHL teams pay prospects their salaries until they made the jump to the SHL. That would free up some cap room, giving SHL teams the opportunity to pay out higher salaries to their semiactive members. I'm not sure if this would actually work, but I'm interested in seeing what happens.

C. Hamilton has a population of roughly 5 people. Where would you relocate the franchise?
I would relocate the team to Paris. I think that it’s time for us to grow the game and we need a team outside of  North America is not the right way to do it.  Paris would bring prestige to the league. The city has more than 5 people. In fact, there are 2.1 million people living there.  Being a french town the team would need to rename. My proposition is ‘Les faucons d’argent de Paris. It’s just a literal translation.

Season 59: Texas, just after their Cup win over Buffalo.  Cillian Kavanagh laying in the front (you can tell it's him, because he has his special named pads on).  This is big for Texas because its their first after the rebuild, and was the first from a non-Great Lakes team that breaks up the 4 Season streak that Division had over the Cup.

I talked on this point in the last Championship Week, and I believe we are still at the same point now.  It has only been two months, so not much will change in just one season.  I still believe that the biggest thing that can be done to put teams on a more even foot against teams that have FHM experts or just the massive amounts of hours free to run all fourteen million six hundred and five different possibilities the Dr. Strange saw of the way that the season could play out, and that would be to limit the testing that can be done once a file is sent out to all of the teams.  It would also hopefully help with the uptick in General Manager burn out that we have been seeing in the most recent Seasons, since they won’t have to spent tireless nights to build their Top 4 Total TPE team to its perfect line combinations to be able to defeat Hamilton/Buffalo/Texas/Chicago.

Looking at the horizon of Season 63 for SHL Teams, one sticks out particularly for a team in need of going into a rebuild with where they currently sit.  That would unfortunately be the Toronto North Stars.  Going into Season 63 with their third General Manager in the same number of Seasons is already a bad start for the team cohesion.  The core group that was put together to attempt to upend the Buffalo and Hamilton Dynasties that we’ve been oppressed with is hitting the bigger portion of their respective Regressions and there isn’t much in the pipeline to replace them, or much in the way of Draft Picks in upcoming Drafts to fill this void, once those percentages get beyond the sustainable levels.  Put on top of that the multiple users who are becoming Free Agents this Off-Season that have publicly and privately said they were going to move on and chase the Cup with the same select number of teams that basically everyone else on the site wants to go to play on to get their Cups (God bless the amazing parity we have going on here).  I know a few of them will obviously be rebuffed in their attempts, but it’s rather sad to see the continuation of the oppression, rather than trying to combat it.

This is a pretty easy one for me. Although at the same time, not so easy. I am been a part of two franchises so far in my team in this league and I have had some amazing experiences with all the GMs I have had.

Have to start with the one that gave me my start Dex ( @Dextaria ) has been amazing to me since he took a chance on me in the third round a couple seasons ago. So helpful constantly and someone that is always there to bounce things off of. Have to also give it up for one of the best guys I have met in this league, the Co-GM Steve ( @steveoiscool ). Steve is such a good dude, and someone I ma happy to have met and been able to react with. Looking forward to eventually playing alongside him again internationally!

Now to move on to my GM in Seattle. Tig ( @notorioustig ) has been incredible. So open and honest with what he expects, and always willing to be so helpful. I consider myself so fortunate to be an Argo, and look forward to joining them some day and hopefully helping them make a couple deep runs in the postseason.

I am very lucky to be where I am. Thank you all so much for the help!

One of the biggest draft busts in my time has to also be one of the biggest draft steals. Drafted in the fourth round by Vancouver in the season 60 SMJHL draft, Darwin Koff was on pace to possibly be the leader among all draftees in TPE following his rookie season. He was then drafted sixth overall by the Calgary Dragons in the season 61 SHL draft right before everything changed and the career of Darwin Koff was basically a distant memory.

After a couple red flags from his user, Darwin quickly doubled down on those thoughts to get himself basically removed from the league. So mere weeks after Calgary though they had picked up a player who could possibly be the top earner in his class, they had a prospect who was out of the league for some pretty poor decisions and some not so nice words. Now Darwin Koff is not much more than a memory.

d. Who is the best player to NOT make the final in the past 2 years?

a. Having experienced both of the sims, I have to say I like STHS more. It is something I have been around longer (in a GM role in another sim league) and just something I am fonder of. I know how hard it is to win there, so STHS has to be my answer. (53 words)

b. Because of the way the league is going now, I would have to say yes. It just seems like there is not very much turnover, and the cream is staying at the top. The only thing that stopped this season from being an exact replica of last season was the matchups. The top teams are still the top teams, and there seems to be a pretty large gap there. (69 words, nice)

c. I know there is a J team in Colorado, but with no team in my favorite US city, it has to be Denver. The mile-high city needs some representation here! I mean it is even just the Colorado Raptors. It doesn’t even say where they are! We need a team in Denver ASAP! (53 words)

d. The only answer here has to be Ryuuji Minamino, right? The guys scored 60 freaking goals this season. That is insane! An absolute offensive dynamo, and not making the finals is just depressing. So much skill that hasn’t been rewarded yet, but I have to say, I am hopeful the it will be coming soon. He has earned it! (59 words)

I gotta boost my boy Keygan here. He led the Edmonton Blizzard to a Cup in S49 and was the co-GM for another one in S45, and also went to two more finals and two Conference Finals. Keygan wasn't afraid to make bold moves, with the big trade for Theo Morgan being one. Even though it didn't pan out thanks in part to running into the Aggressive Forechecking Gang in the conference finals, it was still showing a commitment to be aggressive and go for the Cup. That trade also brought in Jon Toner, who was a great piece on the blueline and an even better guy in the locker room. What's more, he never had to resort to moves like tanking, as Edmonton made the playoffs every single year he was in the management seats, helping with a 19-season streak of making the playoffs that's still going. I don't think I would've been anywhere near as good a GM if I hadn't learned from him, and I've definitely learned a lot.

There are a lot of "could-have-been" draft picks in the SHL, but let's have some fun thinking about someone that busted hard. Write about their potential and where they were picked, and how that franchise could look *if* they had in fact panned out.

I'm gonna go with Bradley Barkov, the 9th overall pick of the Calgary Dragons in the stacked S53 Reddit draft. Dude was an absolute stud in the J for the Colorado Raptors, and was active in the rookie class chat. Calgary was a pretty old team at the time and only getting older, and in a time where they didn't make many picks Barkov would've been a big add for the Dragons. In a universe where Barkov never goes inactive around 900 TPE, he would have been one of their best players by now, and maybe he helps get them over the hump. Otis B. Driftwood fell off pretty hard for them later in his career, and Barkov being around 1700-1800 TPE would've been a significant upgrade. As well, if Barkov is still active they maybe never make the Leopold Lockhart trade which never really ended up amounting to anything. The possibilities are endless for what could've been if one of our fallen S53 brethren had lasted longer and lived up to his full potential.

Quote:6.c): . Hamilton has a population of roughly 5 people. Where would you relocate the franchise?

Cities with quick growth are great places to put a team, and that's why we need to relocate the Steelhawks to Wood Buffalo. The oilsands will provide a lot of prosperity for the short and long term (climate change? get out of here with that talk) and they have a limitless footprint and opportunity for growth. Plus, with how cold it gets there, we can just play on an outdoor rink all year, at least until the blackflies drop by.

Quote:18. Written, 3 TPE, Apocalypse Now 150 words min

I'm recreating soon anyway, so this is a fun opportunity to talk about some potential ones. I'm going to assume in a hypothetical realm that I'm not a GM so they could go wherever. First off, there'd be Margus Komarov, the big, husky Estonian defenseman. With his terrifying hits, he'd be a menace to any opposing forward crossing the blueline. I could see him going to a team like Baltimore with big guys like Valentin Kalashnikov and Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Lebrunette. The second player would be Sophie Bordeleau, a centre from Quebec. I could see her being a fit for an offensive team like the Chicago Syndicate and would probably aim to be an offensive centre, putting up lots of goals. The next player would be Luca DiBenedetti, a goaltender from Italy. He fits the Jacob Markstrom mold, being a big guy who's able to rely on his positioning and quick reflexes to be great even when facing a lot of shots. He'd be a perfect fit behind Edmonton's defense, which gave up a lot of shots this past season. My last player would be Jamie Clayton, a winger from the north of England. She excels at going into the corners and the front of the net, and boxing out in the dirty areas of the ice. Clayton still has soft hands though and would be able to score goals and set up plays. She'd be a good fit for Edmonton as well, a team that plays a rather heavy style with net-front presence prioritized.

Task 1 - Trivia - 3 TPE

Verification: TDZ

Task 2 - GM - 3 TPE

I think one of the best recent GMs of the league has to be FuzzSHL. Working with him personally in Los Angeles as well as seeing the hard work he put into juniors for Montreal/Carolina when he took over there is an inspiration for anyone wanting to GM. After taking over Montreal in juniors he was able to win a cup miraculously with a decimated and dead team. He took a locker room that was absolutely barren of life, literally no posts made in literal months before he got the job, and transformed it into one of the most active locker rooms in the league overall with the swap to Carolina and the subsequent drafting prowess. He has also taken Los Angeles from a middling team and continuously made us better as we continue to get better on our hunt for that elusive cup. Fresh off a game 6 loss to Texas in the western conference finals we are definitely trending in the right way because of him.

Task 6 - grab bag - 4TPE

a. I think it depends on the era of STHS comparatively too. If it is an STHS win pre broken sim with the meta then I would 100% take the STHS win over current FHM, even with the slight randomness. I would take current FHM over broken STHS though and I would probably take future cup wins over everything if we do find something to help break up the meta issue.
70 words

b. More than likely we would have seen the same final 4 as last year though Los Angeles did put up a slight fight against Texas and we were testing about 50/50 against Chicago too. Knowing how FHM goes it would have ended up the same way regardless though and the only teams who had a chance to break it up did in LAP and BAP.
66 words

c. I mean ideally Hamilton would have just been in Toronto anyways since that might as well be where they are now. If I had to choose a city though I would choose a city that has absolutely no controversy around it with how their sports teams behave and are 100% completely honest. Hello Houston Steelhawks.
55 words

d. I think the best player to not make the final has to be Ryuuji Minamino. They set the record for points this past season and had an absolutely crazy season to only fall short in the playoffs against some strong teams. It is definitely a shame to think what they could have done in the finals against a Hamilton team to just get swept anyways.

Task 13 - parity - 3 TPE

I think parity is definitely a problem the past few seasons and has been for a a bit now however I'm not sure if there is a problem with parity going forward or not. With the upcoming harsher regression changes it's tough to know how the league is going to really look until the next season really gets here and all the moves have gotten into place. A lot of teams are about to get annihilated in regression and on top of that the salary cap has been creeping up on quite a few teams as well. I think the next 2-3 seasons will be huge tells on how the parity issue is going to be in the league going forward and if we're still in the same spot come, season 65 or so, then there is definitely still an issue that hasn't been fixed at all. So yea there's a problem not but hopefully this is it.

Task 19 - groundhog day - 3 TPE

I think if I went back an entire season to redo the entire S61 and on again there would 100% be some changes made. I would be able to better predict the outcome of Los Angeles and some potential moves to make ahead of time, especially with the regression changes coming that I would then know about. I would fix my casino bets and also just bet in general for S61 because I didn't. I would also go back and change all my predictions for max TPE as well as fantasy so I could get those top payouts in that. I would know as the recruitment team head at the time which areas would work well and which wouldn't so I could better hone my plan of attack better in that situation. I would also know now that I would be in J's head office so know better about what to prepare myself for in that situation as well to help better the league. So overall it would be a mix of me helping the league where I can and definitely padding that bank account and TPE totals as much as possible.

I'm biased here, I haven't been around for a long time so I haven't had a ton of experience with a lot of GMs, but I think I can still spot a good one when I see it. @Keygan has done a great job building Edmonton and setting them up for future success, and he's fostered a pretty good vibe in the LR that has remained even after he stepped down as GM. There's been very few "misses" in the drafts that I've seen from him, and while there's no way he could've actually seen this coming (outside of some educated guesses), selling out to draft big in S59 has put Edmonton in a great spot post-regression changes. Even if he's not part of the team currently (who knows, he's already been traded once), a lot of the teams future success (hopefully) can be directly attributed to his efforts. I have high hopes for Edmonton's growth, seeing all the max earners from each class grow over the course of the next few seasons.

13. Written, 3 TPE, Parody (150 words min.)

Don't worry, surely this is the last season Hamilton and Texas are ever in the finals. Next season is the year Baltimore/Tampa Bay takes over, I'm sure. In all seriousness however, I do feel like the regression changes will help shake things up a bit at the top. A lot of these top teams have stayed at the top by getting buy in from max earners who have had a very long and full career, and by collecting max earners from teams that are doing anything but winning. Time will tell how much it actually changes, but at least on paper it seems like it should have quite the effect on teams with good, old players which is generally the teams you would think about when complaining about parity at the end of the season. Whether it helps to lift the teams that are outside the bubble will be the big question, but it at least resets the board a bit for that to be possible.

15. Written, 2 TPE, The yearly IIHF task (100 words min.)

Great Britain is coming off of a gold medal finish, and though they lost superstar Vorian Atreides they look primed to make another run for gold again. The top of the league seems to have tightened up a bit, with Canada, USA, Great Britain and Japan all having legitimate chances to win gold. Meanwhile Finland, Ireland, and Sweden are all vying for a place at the top, and honestly they're not far off. It'll be an interesting run to the end this season and it's really hard to predict who will actually take it all. At the end of the day, only one nation has "Great" in their name, so that's always a safe bet.

19. Written, 3 TPE, Groundhog Day 150 words min

If I wake up in the past and realize either Hamilton or Texas are going to win the cup again, the first thing I'm doing is making sure it's ACTUALLY the past through other means (is Harambe dead or alive? Do the Red Wings suck? Are people still trying to buy horse Ivermectin for personal use?) since I can't really trust the cup matchup as an actual indicator of whether I'm in the past or not. Once I have verified that is indeed the past, I am DEFINITELY cheating on all my casino/fantasy/primetime/3v3 picks. I will be the first person to get 100% of the TPE possible in a single season, and no one will even think to question it because it's all surprisingly predictable. It won't matter though, even after grabbing all the possible TPE in S61 my player will still be a pylon in his rookie season for S62. Some things can't change even with divine intervention.

Congratulations @visceralpotamus , you're the new PT director. Pasta the Turtle has been hard at work spreading propaganda about animal rights or something for as long as he's been in the league, so this feels like the perfect chance to give him the soapbox he craves. Look forward to plenty of PT prompts such as "Do Whalers deserve to live? Explain why not in 150 words" and "Choose new mascots for literally every animal based team, you species-ist cowards" as well as "What even is a Steelhawk, anyway?". The only way you can change a league like this is from the inside, and this is your chance Pasta. Don't mess it up.

There have been some good and some bad GMs in SHL history. (Mostly bad) Pick a GM you think was outstanding and explain why you think they were one of the better GMs in SHL history. Point to trades/signings/trophy wins/locker rooms to support your claim.
- I won't pick just one, I'll pick three. I choose @boom , @Dextaria and @Pythonic . All absolute legends. Very wholesome people, with a great sense of humour.
When I first joined the league, I was a bit scared(well maybe not scared, but ya know what I mean) of what sort of people the teams would have and what the community was like, but right off the bat the Whalers LR was nice and welcoming and Boom and Dex both were very helpful. Even though we didn't have the most amazing first season when I was a rookie and Boom decided to abandon us for the high life of SHL.. We still got that 4 Star Cup a few seasons after that, which obviously points to great drafting from all of the GM's(especially Boom and Dex, cause they drafted me). I can't point towards any other trophies, but in my opinion drafting me is a trophy in itself. (wc: 156)

HO didn't feel like making a job posting for PT Director so they just put you in charge of picking the new one. So elect a new PT director, tag them, and explain why you think they'd be a great fit for the job. Or just someone you want to torture.
- Instead of torturing someone, I'll just take the hit and appoint myself, because I don't wanna put anyone through that meatgrinder.
I'd be a great fit, because I come up with the dumbest shit, but also very interesting stuff.. We could talk about what animal you would be, if you were an animal, or if you could, what animals powers would you take over.
Or like what specific safari animal you'd be? Or if you were a super hero, which one would you be? I wouldn't be any super hero, because I absolutely hate super heros and super hero movies, like how dare you make a literal god a "super hero", that's dumb as fuck.. wc: 115

Task 1: Moose

Task 2: One of the greatest GMs in recent memory has to be Jess @sköldpaddor, mostly because she came into an incredibly difficult situation with Nevada. With essentially a dead team (minus about two gems in Thun and Grapehead) and the need for a complete rebuild, Jess set out to do just that. While Nevada wasn't exactly competitive early on, Jess continued to work on making the locker room a place where users would want to be, and could feel like they could build a little bit of family and overall just a community feeling. Taking nothing and turning it into something special, a place where users want to come back even after they've been called up or were taken in expansion or traded to other teams is incredibly important to the long-term success of the SHL. When SMJHL locker rooms aren't great, you lose users before they've really had the chance to succeed. Jess has worked to combat this in Nevada, and is going to continue working to do this throughout her tenure. Watch out, because one day Nevada will be the powerhouse that scares the other SMJHL teams.

Task 3: Well, I guess this is weird to write about, but I think I have to pick myself in terms of being a bust for Manhattan. As it stands right now, my contract has not been extended, and I had always mentioned that I wanted to enter free agency. I didn't quite expect it to be this early, but well, I guess this is where we're at right now. So, if I end up sticking around Manhattan, or if I were to stick around, I guess eventually they maintain a powerhouse defensive duo with Moose and Pengu, but the reality is, with me leaving, I don't actually know what Isa does. It does mean that at the start of when Manhattan should be competitive with an almost 800 or 900 TPE player coming up, they're instead going to lose out on that player and not actually have anyone to replace them, because they may not even have thought I was serious about ever leaving.

Task 4: I think one of the rule changes that went right was that time where the owners overruled HO on the intent of the rule. While I agree that it should have been caught earlier and rectified before it ever even got to the situation with implementation, I think that in the spirit and letter of the rule, this was clearly a violation of the intention and it wasn't in the best interests of the players, and specifically, the users that were involved in the situation. At the end of the day, one of the key things we have to keep in mind when there are unfavorable situations that may impact your team negatively, is that there are users who are also being impacted negatively, and sometimes all of that attention on the singular user has a more unfortunate impact than all of that on the whole league. In this case, allowing the players to be signed by the team that drafted them was what was best and right for them as users.

Task 19: If it was the start of the S61 season again, I might honestly have asked to get called up. While I love Nevada, and everything there, knowing that it wouldn't have made a difference for our finals run, I may as well have started to gain some stats in the big boy SHL instead. Not to mention I would have bet absolutely everything on the MAN over which literally not one single person in the league did, and I would have made a lot more money and maybe actually have been able to beat Luke in the financial arena. Additionally, there are a few things I would have been able to prepare for, mostly the fact that I apparently need way more knowledge about the SHL and parity and what team rosters are to be able to do some of these championship week tasks than I ever would have thought of for a sim league. So I guess that's all.

Task 12: I think that @WithTheMoose would make for a good PT director, mostly because he has done similar jobs before, and him and I have spent plenty of time spitballing what possible point tasks could be, including having those that are more strict and focused, as well as having some tasks which are more open-ended and offer the user freedom and flexibility. Coupled with the fact that he mentioned having numerous tasks available each week for users to complete, and that he barely knows anything about the SHL or hockey, means that he would be able to create tasks which are vague enough that even I could complete them, so that's definitely a plus.

Task 2: (3 TPE)

If there's been one GM in the SHL who excelled at the job, look no further than the GM for the first 30 seasons in Winnipeg. Damian Littleton ran the Jets better than anyone in the same position. Always putting out a competitive team and getting the most out of his roster places him alone at the top of the podium. With too many quality roster moves to talk about, I'm going to hit on a couple of franchise changing ones.

First big trade was the very first trade in SHL history. After winning the draft lottery in Season 1, Littleton got a trade offer for it, getting offered a first round pick and an additional top 10 pick. With all the players on an even playing field, Littleton agreed, knowing an extra player would be huge. The trade between Winnipeg and Calgary was agreed upon, and Littleton was able to grab 3 future Hall of Famers in the first 2 rounds. The other huge trade was acquiring arguably the greatest player in SHL history in Ron Mexico. Trading a depth player to Hamilton for Mexico was almost criminal. Both these trades propelled Winnipeg to the first Challenge Cup in SHL history.

Through his 30 season career, Littleton very often fleeced his fellow GMs. He was also a master lines coach. No one got more out of less than Littleton did. He just knew what combos to roll and how to fit all the pieces together. The best GM in SHL history. They don't make them like him anymore.

Task 3: (3 TPE)

Coming off a few key losses to expansion, the Winnipeg Jets needed to hit on their first round pick in the Season 3 draft. The expansion Blizzard had taken two first liners from the Jets in Jay McDonald and Sergei Karpotsov. Sitting with the 6th overall pick, there was one name the Jets had on their list, Ford Prefect.

Ford quickly made a name for himself around the league, showing high activity levels and a commitment to developing his player. He was as can't miss as any player in the draft, a future star. The Jets sat and waited on draft day hoping he would drop. Luckily, there were a few players with ties to other teams so it gave Winnipeg a chance to land Ford. The stars aligned for the Jets that night and still there at 6 was their guy, the only one they marked down for that pick. They landed their franchise player.

Or so they thought. Ford Prefect started out OK, but quickly fell off. His activity levels dropped, his commitment to training slammed to a stop and poof. No one saw that coming from Ford. Every other GM was stunned at what happened to Ford Prefect. It was a brutal blow to the Jets, who thought they had a superstar and future captain. He didn't even last more than a couple of seasons. A massive bust that no one saw coming.

Task 6: (4 TPE)

a. What is worth more to you, a cup win in the FHM era or the STHS era?

I don't think there is a right answer here. In STHS, any team could win so it made it harder for GMs, you really had to keep making moves and tinkering with your lineup to get just the right combo. When you did, though, what a feeling to finally win one. In FHM, it's very tough to build a strong team, but once you get there, you can coast for a few seasons and dominate. The journey is longer in FHM, but feels too easy once you get there. I'll go with STHS, but only because I haven't won in FHM to compare them.

(104 words)

b. Be honest, would we have seen the same final 4 as last year (Chicago, Texas, Hamilton, Buffalo) had BUF/HAM and TEX/CHI not run into each other in the second round?

Honestly, probably. They would have beat any other team they faced until the conference finals. They are just too far ahead every other team in the league right now. Sure, you might take a game from them, but not 4 in 7. Having them face off in the semis was cool though because you at least saw a different team in the final 4, even if those teams got crushed from there.

(72 words)

c. Hamilton has a population of roughly 5 people. Where would you relocate the franchise?

As a Hamiltonian, I take offense to this question and refuse to relocate an original SHL franchise, especially one with so much success throughout their existence. However, to play along, let's relocate them to Niagara Falls. It's still close enough to Hamilton that the fans will stay loyal and the city is super cool to visit. It would be a great spot for fans to travel to, home and visitors.

(70 words)

d. Who is the best player to NOT make the final in the past 2 years?

I'll go with Ryan Shepard. In Season 61 and 62, he finished 6th and 3rd in league scoring respectively. However, both times his Chicago team lost to the Renegades in the Conference Semis. A brutal way for your season to end, two seasons in a row! He even had huge help this season with points leader Ryuuji Minamino. Didn't matter, Texas had their number and leaves Shepard with individual success, but no team success.
