Penguin 4. Written, 3 TPE, Extinction Event (150 words min.) Rumour has it that millions of years before the SHL began, there was a pre-historic “Dino Hockey League” that dominated the global sports market before a meteor wiped out most life on the planet. Describe that ancient league. Maybe name a couple of teams or players, tell me about how the Dino league’s rules differed from our current ones? This one is pretty loose, just have fun with it! Back in the prehistoric days, Adelie's ancestors absolutely dominated the ice. You see back then, there were massive penguins known as Kumimanu Biceae. These massive penguins weighed over 220 pounds and stood to be over six foot tall. They were massively built winged figures of flubber and they were dominant. You see, Adelie is a pretty dominant player on the ice here in the SHL and he is significantly smaller than his ancient brothers. You see Adelie is barely more than two foot tall, so these guys were over three times as large if you can imagine it. Their grace and skill on the ice was absolutely unmatched and they could slide circles around the larger prehistoric creatures of the time. I say slide because they preferred to skate around on their bellies, much like their more current great grandbabies. Its a shame that the meteor took them out as it took centuries upon centuries before penguins returned to the ice. 6. Written, up to 4 TPE - Grab Bag: Pick up to 4 Challenge Cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words. a. Los Angeles has been riding their top players for almost a full minute more of ice time than Hamilton has theirs. If you were a coach, do you buy into this strategy? Do you let your top guys leave it all out there every night or aim for the most balanced attack possible? b. Guy O'Shea and Evangelos Giannopoulos have been absolute block machines for Hamilton in the playoffs with 109 between them. If you’re looking for offense in this series, how do you get around these two defensemen? c. Los Angeles’ defense, on the other hand, has not been afraid to join the play and put up points. How do you prepare for a five player offensive attack? How do you counter? d. The starting goalies for these teams, Olof Karsikko and A Jobin have been nearly unbeatable up to this point with a 0.937 and a 0.927 SV% respectively. If you’re a player on the other team, how would you get inside their heads so that you can put the puck in the net? a. It's the finals. I think you have to leave it all on the ice. This is absolutely no time to back off or to play it safe. You made it this far by riding your best players, so double down. If anything leave them on the ice even longer. They've played their hearts out, they've carried you. Rely on them. b. I think to get past Hamilton's two elite defenders, you need to keep up a fast paced assault. High volume shots, stay on the offensive, force them to take breaks and get the second line on the ice more. If they're not on the ice, they can't defend. It turns out that with their defenders often on offense as well, Los Angeles might be well suited for this. c, The only way you counter the prolific 5 man attack style of Los Angeles is to slow down the game. Use your elite defenders to keep possession of the puck as long as possible. Short passes, efficient shooting. Take control of the ice and reduce the number of chances Los Angeles has to stretch your team thin. d. Of the two teams I think Los Angeles is best suited for this kind of play. Because their defense gets involved so much offensively, I think they can put up the volume of shots they need to in order to throw the opposing goalie off. The sheer volume of shooting could be enough to slide some by. 17. Graphic, 3 TPE, Clairvoyant You have been granted the gift of seeing the future, but only a single future cup winner. Relay us with this info in the form of a cup banner for the winning team. Make sure to include the season they won, you can make up some player names if it's far out in the future. Have fun with it! It could be your team if you want, with you as the star! We won't know if you're lying until SXX anyway. I think heading for S70 or so, you could see the Chicago Syndicate potentially win a title. Led by an awesome GM like SDCore, they've managed to combine together a couple fairly solid drafts including grabbing incredible people like Tesla on top of their players. On top of their drafts, I could see Chicago potentially grabbing a few young, key free agents in the future on the defensive side of things. Their GM is also on the verge of retiring and returning to team as another young player. As the seasons go on, I could see the youth this team has coming in really rounding out and becoming a true threat to the cup. They'll all be rounding out into their primes at about the same time and with some decent role players mixed in on the second and third rounds and this team could be down right scary and I'm excited to see how it plays out. I know they're led well and they have it in them to do great things. 12. Milestones, up to 3 TPE Milestones are folded in with CW. 1. Trivia (3 TPE)
Verification 12. Milestones (2 TPE) S63 Milestones 13. Parity (3 TPE) Parity is not solved in the SHL, not by a long shot. While it’s great that a new team made it to the finals, that is such a small piece of the overall puzzle in terms of the scope of the league. Just by basic law of averages, it’s not surprising that someone made it to the finals that wasn’t Buffalo, Hamilton, Texas, or Chicago. Especially with the sort of strange seeding decisions that the sim engine decides to go with. But, despite a new team making it to the finals, once again we see Hamilton with the final championship, as is tradition. Even if some teams get an upset and make it to the finals, it’s still likely going to one of the usual teams in the end. The league leadership needs to do a better job at establishing rules to help enforce parity and give folks a reason to care about their team’s performance. 14. Rebuild (3 TPE) I can’t go through an entire Championship Week without mentioning the rebuild that I’ve been a part of with the New Orleans Specters. JKortesi, Python, Nictox, and Overdoo have, at various times, been at the helm of a successful rebuild. When I joined the team, there was basically no one left who was still active or at least actively contributing to the locker room. Well there was Huck, who is worth 10 other users, but otherwise it was a ghost town. However, as time went on we were able to bring a number of tremendous users to the team and that hasn’t slowed down. We made the playoffs for the first time in over five seasons, and while we lost to Chicago in the first round it was at least a step in the right direction. And the great thing is that our team is still actively growing and improving as time goes on, so the sky is the limit. 18. Goalies (3 TPE) I for one welcome our new robot goalie overlords. Here’s the thing, probably nothing changes. As it currently exists, goalies are really just an overall barometer of a team’s performance. They bring nothing specific to the table outside perhaps a small edge and improvement, but otherwise nothing substantial. If every team had perfect robot goalies, there really wouldn’t be a huge change besides a slightly overall decrease in scoring across the league for a couple seasons while we tinker with the goal sliders in the sim engine to restore the current scoring letters. The other benefit to this is that it would push folks to creating skaters instead of potentially ‘wasting’ their time on creating goalies. This actually might increase overall user retention in the league as folks are no longer drawn to a position that has little overall impact on their team’s chances of success. It would just be a big bummer to lose out on a chance to play goalie, as it’s a lot of folks’ favorite position in real life hockey. 21. PT Difficulty (2 TPE) Well, PT directors are always just looking at word counts, so that’s what you have to mess with in order to create a harder task for the Point Task Directors. I mean, you can also resort to bullying and insults, but that is no fun and I would never do that to someone who does a job for free in their hobby. So I suppose I would do my PTs in a different language, probably something that doesn’t use typical English letters so that it’s harder to tell how many words are actually being used. Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, something along those lines. 16/16 TPE ![]() ![]() Registered Senior Member

Trivia verification word: a weh di bumboclaat 18. Written, 3 TPE, zzSnoop Lionzz 150 words min At first, I think scores would lower a bit, because obviously goalies are better and prevent goals more often. But that wouldn't last. Knowing you don't have to defend as much because the goalie is incredible, teams would likely play a more aggressive offensive game. Defensemen with limited attacking capability, no matter how good their defensive attributes, would be much less valued. Enforcers would be more valuable, providing they have some offensive capability too, since throwing the opposition off their groove on offense might be more noticeable, if the forward line has to be firing on all cylinders to score past these godbots. Then, after a while, this shift will lead to a new meta, in which someone realises that one really good defenseman can make a big difference by taking one attacker out of the equation and dramatically impacting the opposition's chances of beating the super goalie. Slowly, teams start playing two strong defensive players again, and we sort of go full circle back to the lower scoring games. 19. Written, 3 TPE, Bodysnatchers 150 words min There are a few ways you could expose this, I think. I have it on good authority that the Panthers are "old men" and a largely shared fondness for good beers and weed. So, I would probably note the lack of enthusiasm for these things, and start asking questions. Things like "hey you ever wonder how we coped before we had broadband internet?" and "man, do you remember giving your computer digital AIDS trying to get your favourite band's latest album?". You can supplement this with passing references to other things old men like, such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, and complaining about zoomers. After a while, this will confuse the renegades enough to start catching them in the lie. Then it's just a matter of setting a trap where people will see it. As everyone knows, the Renegades can't resist winning. It's like an addiction or something, they need help. But this is how we catch them. Foolproof. This isn't the challenge cup, I'm sorry, sue me, but I'm using this task to write about my first season with the SMJHL and how I won the S57 Four Star Cup with the Anchorage Armada. This was my first time ever participating with simulation hockey league and it was a blast. Every single season I was with ANC we made it to the finals, but it was only that first season that we were able to win it. Gabe did a great job getting a bunch of active players at their 450 cap to lead us through most of the way, plus some really good puck luck helped us on taking out QCC. We weren't the underdogs of the entire playoffs, but everyone in the league was expecting QCC to blow everyone out that playoff run. We've not gotten past round 1 since I've been with ATL, but this past run was the closest we've been until we choked and got reverse swept. WC - 163 3 TPE Code: 4. Written, 3 TPE, Extinction Event (150 words min.) A Dino Hockey League sounds absolutely fantastic. It could go one of two ways: either each individual team is made up of nothing but that dinosaur (for example the Pucky Pteranadons are just pteranadons) or there's a mix of dinos among each team. A mix would certainly be more fair, but for naming's sake, we're going to pretend like each team is its own dino. We have the Pucky Pteranadons, the Massive Mammoths, the Vicious Velociraptors, the Center Ice Cavemen, and many more. I don't think this would make very much sense and I'm already having troubles imagining how it would work. Could you imagine a brachiosaur on skates? I don't even know if it could get on the ice without it breaking. It's so large that you could go five-hole on it all day long. Some carnivorous dinos might lose their temper if things get too heated and simply eat the opposition. What are you going to do, send a t-rex to the penalty box? - WC 166 3 TPE Code: 11a. It's so refreshing to finally see someone else make a run like LAP. Not only that, but they made it an actual series only losing 2-4! Task 1
Verification Task 2 While I wasn’t actually around in season 1, I did join back in season 3, and I can tell you there were a lot of differences! The first difference: player types. Everyone back then was a super star. Just a few seasons of training and you’d be able to get your player to 99 stats in different areas (this is back in the STHS days, none of this 20 max in FHM stuff). Probably one of the largest difference was the way the game was presented to people. For the most part, the whole playoffs was done in a forum play by play by a user. They’d have to go through the whole boxscore/events and come up with a play by play that they would post in the forum comment by comment. It took a lot of time to do, but there was always a lot of people in the forum “watching” to see if their team would win. That’s probably the largest difference, and I have to say I much prefer the current iteration of game presentation. Task 6 a. I think when it comes to crunch time, you want your best guys out on the ice. Although this could impact their fatigue and be a potential issue for mistakes, when you need to win, your best players have to be your best players. Depth is important, but in crucial situations in the playoffs, your best players will always be on the ice. b. I think there are plenty of teams trying to find the answer to this question. How are you supposed to get around 2 absolute stud shut down D men? These two will literally do anything to stop the puck from getting into the net and it’s great to have them on my team. Even in practice I have a hard time getting around them, so good luck to the opposition. c. I think the best way to play against a team like that is with quick feet and quick puck movement. If their defenseman are jumping into the offensive zone, you need to quickly turn that puck around and into their zone to hopefully catch them too deep in the offensive zone. If they do control the puck it’s not easy to stop, they have had a ton of success playing that way. d. For me I think it’s all about making the goalie as uncomfortable as possible. Trying to get into his crease, getting close to him, talking to him after whistles or even during the play. Whatever it takes to get in his mind and try to get him off his game. As a scorer I know if I can get to him and then score a goal, that would be a surefire way to put him on tilt. Task 14 I don’t think you can look at this task and not say Baltimore. This is a team who had a very rough patch during the season 50s, and they were bad for a while only to finally see their patience pay off and now are one of the league’s best. They have continued to improve, and unfortunately have not been able to crack into a Challenge Cup Final in recent seasons, but they’ve gotten close, losing to Hamilton in the Eastern Conference Finals 3 years in a row. I do believe Baltimore will prove to be the strongest team in the East (and probably the league) this coming season, and will likely be the season they finally break through and get to the Challenge Cup Finals. Huge props to JR and the rest of the Baltimore staff who have played a role in seeing this team get to where they are right now. I think it takes a ton of hard work to stick through a rebuild for as long as they did, but their players believed in the plan and they’re much better off for it. Written, 3 TPE, Back In My Day (150 words min.) Back in the old days, things had to have been super exciting. Think about it. You're the first group of people to play for that team so you know that every single night you have the potential to set records. Single season game records, career records, and much more. They were all super possible. I know that I felt it at the end of Durden's career, so it must've been great to be a part of something right at the beginning. I'm assuming that players were great and speedy, and goalies couldn't keep up against everything. That's what made the great goalies of the time that good. They were the select few that could keep up with the insane pace of the offensive players. There was so much room for growth because you weren't coming into a team that had a solid top 6 or a solid defensive core. You could build however and be a huge asset to any team. Maybe one day the sim will be reset and we'll all start from scratch again. Code: 6. Written, up to 4 TPE - Grab Bag: Pick up to 4 Challenge Cup related topics to write about! When we talk about it in the sim, it's not like they're going to get hurt. If I'm on a team that's on a cup run, I want the best players out there so we win games. Does it suck sometimes for those working their way up? Sure. But rings speak volumes. B) In order to get by those block machines, you need to make sure you're taking smart shots. I think in order to do this, you really need to use the entire width of the ice so that the defensive team doesn't know where the shot will ultimately come from. Fake shots, quick shots are the answer. C) I think in order to play against a full five-man offense, you really need to work on positioning. You have to have your wings on the point and follow them into the zone if they creep in. You have to be willing to sacrifice a stellar breakout in order to simply clear the puck and get your lines changed. D) In order to get in the head of a hot goalie, you have to pepper them with shots from every angle. Don't let them get any rest. One of them will slide in, and you'll be able to get them shaky. They're going to start to doubt themselves and that's when the goals start to pile up. Score one, and more will come. Code: 12. I really think Ace has done a great job of preparing his team the Winnipeg Aurora for a huge uptick in point production. I may be biased but I think he's done it right. He went out and drafted a lot of players from the same draft class so that they're all clicking at the same time. I think there's definitely going to be a log jam, but it somewhat sorts itself out with how much TPE people gain throughout their careers. But it's not all bad. By gaining so many prospects from the draft and having a log jam, Ace is going to be able to trade away high-tier prospects or players and get back something he needs. And if it all works out correctly, Ace can even trade away his picks to fill any role that may be lacking. He's got talent coming up and being awesome at the same time to click, and pieces to use to get exactly what he needs later on down the road. Update Page |

Championship Week:
1) CW Trivia +3 TPE Gibson 2) Back In My Day (162 Words) +3 TPE Well its safe to say that in the last 60 years or so the SHL has changed in significant ways. Back in the good old days, you would find several major differences. The biggest difference is the technology used in the matches, the sticks are made not of composites but of solid wood, this significantly effects the speed of the game with the puck speed becoming less than that. This leads into another difference in technology, the shoes, the helmets. Helmets are a simple leather cap that offer little to no protection. The biggest rule change is to the conduct of each player on the ice, the physicality is still there, but the aftermath of the physical contact is different, with a nice firm handshake being mandatory. The time between periods is no longer spent in the teams locker room but in fact is on the ice with a cucumber sandwiches after the 1st and then a cream tea after the second. 4) Extinction Event (166 Words) +3 TPE Well its Dyno time, and lets have some fun. The biggest chance to the rulebook is the number & type of Dino’s that can be on the ice for each team at any time. There must be a minimum of 1 arial, 2 herbivores & 2 carnivores plus a 1 free slot. The Dino SHL must then be split into multiple catagories based upon the size & weight of the dinos. It wouldn’t make sense to have a T-rex play against a velociraptor. The type of Dino’s can play in any position. Having a range of dinos allows for varied tactical & strategic solutions to game-planning. A necessary change that must also be done is to increase the size of the ice rink, the rink needs to be 2km X 2km in overall size for the large Dino league, the smaller Dino league rink is also increased to 100m X 100m. The goal then must also be increased to suit the new size of ice rink. 12) Milestones +3 TPE Milestone Points 15) WJC (123 Words) +2 TPE Hopefully this years WJC can bring the glory back to the UK. After last season’s disappointing results, finishing 3 – 7, they will certainly be looking to improve upon that and build back to the success of winning. As always, they will face stern test from both Canada & Finland to name a few. The WJC is always a tight completion with many of the youngest future international star taking to the ice, the results are anything but a guarantee. This year will be no different to the previous, where a single team will look dominate at the start of the WJC however, there early form wont carry on to the end and may struggle at the back of the end of the tournament. 20) Free Advertising (167 Words) +3 TPE As a GM for the Portland Pythons, a team in the DSFL the junior league for the ISFL. I would like to take this opportunity to talk a little about the ISFL. The ISFL is a great sim league that share many many similarities to the SHL, they are both run through the forums and all teams have dedicated discord servers. The league utilizes the same method of player progression with TPE being earned through AC / weekly training / point tasks / weekly game predications. The league also uses the a shared weekly point task system, meaning that you only need to spend time do one of the leagues PT for both leagues. The current seasons draft has just finished with an eye watering 90 prospects, it would be great for the next draft to bring that number up and above 100. So if you feel like you'd like to join another great sim league, please head over and have a look at the ISFL website.
