12. On the Radar (552 words, 11 TPE)
Today on the “I on the J” SHL draft preview, we make our way to the S67 25OA: Marton Diehm of the Carolina Kraken. I was a little skeptical of this pick on draft day, mostly because it was the third left wing taken by Seven, using all three picks in the first two rounds on rookies with late eligibility, not a lot of scouting time. Over the course of the season, they shuffled positions to get playing time for everyone and it certainly paid off with all three getting not just ice time but integrated into the locker room. In retrospect, it looks like a great foundational draft for Carolina even though the numbers just weren’t there this year. Diehm remains the dark horse of the three, a consistent worker with a quiet presence. It’s clear that he trains hard and wants to earn his keep for a long career. It’s also clear that he doesn’t see himself as a star, so one wonders what drives him. We’ve taken a look at where he focuses during training and practice, and quite frankly it’s a bit of a confused focus. He currently lines up as a two-way forward and he has the brains to play both ends of the ice, that’s for sure, but his skating skills aren’t strong enough carry him up and down the rink for a lot of minutes. There is a lot of good work with his stick, from passing to puckhandling to checks, though he’s a bit too aggressive right now, which turned out a bad takeaway/giveaway ratio this season (and this likely played into his terrible luck and PDO). He seems like a player who might just need a bit of direction. He gives it his all and he’s not only willing but hungry to get down in the corners and in front of the net. He’s not huge, but he has the strength and hands to be a pest who mucks up the opposition and can set up his teammates. An SHL team could really mold him into an effective second-liner to fill any of a number of needs. Push him on physical training to create a punishing forward who can also be an effective agitator or grinder. Focus on his stick skills and smarts, with a bit of skate training, to craft a more consistent two-way player who can even take on a screening role or post up behind the opponent’s net. Marton Diehm is a bit of a Pinocchio: all the parts are there and he wants badly to be a real boy, but he might need someone to move his strings for the time being. In his few media appearances, we are aware that he’s still adjusting to the league and has a lot going on in his personal life. Could those hold him back going forward? We also know that Carolina HO and his teammates believe in him and they know him better than we do. I fully expect someone will take a flyer on him in the first round, and I see him as someone who will come in with something to prove no matter when or where he goes. As the Germans say, I press my thumbs for him and wish him luck in finding the right SHL home. 14. A Million Views (165 words, 3 TPE) The secret is out that Marton is a massive Survivor fan and has been using it to learn English. What they don’t know, is that he filmed an audition video when Survivor finally did a German season recently. Though technically too young to be cast, it’s unclear if he actually submitted it or not. But some clips have now leaked online. Highlights include him showing off his collection of buffs from the American series, his attempts to start a fire using two sticks, and his rambling listing of skills and struggles, among them “can do a lot of pull ups,” “doesn’t ever get a sunburn”, and “can’t really swim.” The pull ups might come in handy for the SHL, or maybe the sunburn thing if we ever host some outdoor games. Your mileage may vary on whether this obsession is a benefit or a detriment, but we can at least hope he brings this same enthusiasm to his hockey as he did to this tape. 20. Code 1:
After a last place finish, our fans that stuck it out until the end deserve something for them. One bright spot was our prowess at scoring shorthanded goals. So the gift is like a foam finger, only shorter. Like small hand, normal size fingers. It is not often your crowd cheers when you take a penalty, and now they can cheer and hold up these short hand fingers as well. Seeing as how we didn't make the playoffs, we are going to give them away the first day of playoffs. Also we don't have storage for this many hands, so it is better if our fans have to hold onto them. 113 words Code 7: I would have to go with the top team Quebec City Citadelles as favourites. Sophie Bordeleau had an amazing season, and with Caleb Hayden in net, I really like their chances. Probably my second team, not really an underdog, would be Detroit. Bnana NWaffles tore it up this year, and given any space in the playoffs could carry his team to victory. 62 words Code 8: I am very grateful for the team that drafted me, but lets take a look at how I could do elsewhere. I think first place team Quebec City Citadelles would be a good fit. They are stacked up front and in between the pipes, but could use a little more help on the back end. I could slot in on the second or third pairing, and really shore up that defense, I don't think I would mess up any team chemistry being down the roster, plus joining the top team should give me the best chances at the cup, which would be a great bonus to being a late season addition. 112 words Code 10: I think Sophie Bordeleau is really going to excel these playoffs. They had a great regular season, and I believe will pick it up a level during what I will believe will be a deep playoff run. Coming second during regular season in points, third in goals, I believe they will really have the drive and push to show everyone that they are the top player in the league, and will be the top player in the postseason. Having a rest for the first round should bring them into the second round ready to fire on all cylinders, and make a charge for the cup. 105 words Code 11: A dream team. This has to be lead by Bnana NWaffles. Lead the league in goals and points, while also being top ten in plus minus and assists. Just dominated the year, easy pick for the C spot. FInished 27 points ahead of his next teammate really shows how he drove the play. Next up would be Din Djarin on RW. More of a set up man, still has the goal scoring touch. Not to mention his amazing OGR, just excelled at getting scoring chances. On LW I would take David-Arturri Donskoi. Had a great year with the Elk, leading them in goals and points also would a top notch GR, also throw a lot of hits to get back puck possession, and plays both ways very well. On Defense I would start with Hodor. Getting a shot through that dude is tough. Not a lot of points, be there is a reason he finished top on the team in plus minus, he doesn't get scored on. Last pick, and I am going off the rules a bit as he didn't make the playoffs, but Rasmus Bergling. Lead all defenseman in goals, top 10 in points, PPG, and blocked shots all while playing on a truly abysmal Newfoundland team. Put this guy on this starting six and he would dominate. Goalie pick would have to be Caleb Hayden. 40 win season, under 3 GAA, top 10 in every needed goalie stat, the guy is a workhorse and really guided the Citadelles to first place finish. 258 words Code 15: Offseason started early for me, unfortunately not even making the playoffs. I am hoping this is for the best, as it will give me more time to relax with my family. Hanging out at home, playing with my kids, and having some more time for computer games. Can't wait to get out in the sun some more as well. Beach time, home time, family time, training time. Still have to make sure to stay in shape, and be ready for next season. Can't slow down now, my career is only beginning and the draft is coming up sooner than I think. 103 words Code 18: Starting out this year I did not really know what I wanted out of this experience. I can tell you now I have fully gotten into it. My goals now, as I feel all players should be striving for, is for sure making the Hall of Fame. I mean it does not get any better than that. I do feel a site job would be in my future, I am not quite sure what that would be yet, but if I keep as involved and up to date as I currently am, I would love to help out in others ways as well. 103 words Code 20: +2 TPE - Milestones Total 900 words or so, plus milestones. More to come soon.
Team Prompts 1. Fan Appreciation Day - 85 words I would enter a partnership with Funko in order to make a bobblehead inspired by the logo of the Detroit falcons. A little humanoid figure with the head of a Falcon, hockey gloves, and a stick in one hand. It would also screech if you press on the Falcons' logo on the front of the figure. It would've been given to every fan in the Detroit arena for the last home game of the season, the best way to say thank you for supporting us. Playoff Prompts 8. An Alternate Timeline - 175 words There are a few other teams I would see myself playing for in an Alternate Timeline based on my interest in playing with them currently. I love Detroit, but I am born in Montréal so the Québec City Citadeles is an obvious choice to play for during the playoffs. With the players they currently have on their forward lines, a sniper and playmaker like myself would do wonders alongside Sophie Bordeleau who is also one of the lead points scorers in the league during Season 67! Playing on the wing along with the likes of Portgas D. Ace or even fellow draftee Viktor Hargreeves ( He was picked 13th in the first round, I was 22nd ) would make quite a formidable line with the right center, and with my contribution during the season ( I think I'm the lead rookie in terms of points scoring with 30 goals, 39 assists for 69 points. Nice. ) brings me to believe I would be a valuable asset to help Québec bring the Four Stars Cup home. Individual Prompts 14. A Million Views - 103 words There was a practice during the playoff series against the Knights where Bastien ended up tangling up with Deemed Inappropriate. They looked like they were about to throw punches, they for sure dropped the gloves but as they were about to throw Bastien stopped and ... Did a dance-off! Everybody got a good laugh from it especially when Primeau performed the Gangnam Style dance showing his agility on the ice along with his sense of humor and goofiness. The whole thing was filmed by none other than Bastien's father Sebastien, who is also his agent. Rumors are there may be more videos like this. 15. R&R - 151 words I'll start by spending time with my Father, my agent, to go over the season and the playoffs to see about the good and the bad and what I can work on to improve next season. I'll be spending a few weeks in my old man's family house in Sweden ( While Canadian-born, he played for Sweden because Team Canada was stacked in front of the net back when he played ) and enjoy some quality time including but not limited to playing video games, work out, do some mountain biking and of course some skiing. I'll head back to Canada, enjoy a bit of indoor karting with friends maybe go to one of those VR places too just for kicks. Also go to the club occasionally as I'll disconnect for two weeks, maybe three, before resuming work ahead of the next season. I'll be in attendance for the SHL draft of course! 18. Goals - 141 words I am aiming to make my mark in the history books, with the season I have enjoyed so far as a rookie in Detroit I feel I am on my way to be able to become a force that can put it in the net en masse as well as feed teammates so they can put it in the net. I am indeed striving for a Hall of Fame induction be it in the SMJHL, the SHL or even on the International level. I did well with my first gen who was a goalie, and now running with a forward I want to do even more. Perhaps one day I could look into becoming an assistant GM or grade media, but I don't feel I have the time for that, so I focus solely on my player. 19. Feedback - 106 words. There were several ways that made the experience of recreating different ( And better ) than my first go with this wonderful game before I left it 4 years ago. I love the new website with the stats, the calendar, and the standings it gives a touch of realism to the game. The streaming of matches adds a whole lot to this as well and I enjoy the collectible cards game quite a lot. That together, plus a fantastic community of players, GMs, and mentors make this great even better than it was the first time. I feel like I am enjoying this time more than the first. 8. An Alternate Timeline
If you weren't playing for your current team, which team would you most like to be playing for in the playoffs. Explain why you chose that team and how you think you'd slot into their roster. Would your player make a big impact on the team? Would you improve their chances of winning a cup? In terms of a team that Viktor Hargreeves would actually be a good fit for, the Carolina Kraken were the first that came to mind since I know they're short a centre. That was quickly dashed as a reason to choose them in particular once I discovered there are a few teams in the SMJHL in the same position. And then I remembered that the Kraken also did not make the playoffs this year (my sincere condolences :C), and circled back around to land on the Yukon Malamutes. With a cursory check of the FO% of the league's centremen, I noticed there are a few pages from the top before YUM appears. Seeing as how faceoffs are one of Viktor's biggest strengths, that's where I wanted to focus in terms of making a true impact on another team. That, and he loves a challenge. Why go to one of the top seeds in this alternate universe when he could help elevate a dark horse instead? It also feels extraordinarily weird to think of bumping another player off their spot, so I'm imagining them switching places in this scenario. Viktor has already proven that he can spearhead a third line with ease, though I do also have a nagging worry that his production may see a drop without Tony Hawkey on his wing. YUM could probably use the extra firepower, but I'm of the belief that a faceoff won gives you more opportunities and more time to hit the back of the net. Now that Viktor is learning what a pass is, it doesn't even need to be him who is triggering the goal horn. He's also put a lot of extra work lately into his defensive game, and that's an important thing to have on a grinding line. So yeah, I think Viktor would make a huge impact on the Malamutes, and as such would also improve their chances of getting their hands on that sweet, sweet 4 star cup. He finds ways to score on the third line, he eats faceoffs like they're piping hot poutine, and he has taken huge strides to become more responsible in the defensive zone. In our current and best reality he's happily chugging along behind the likes of Sophie Bordeleau and Jack St. Clair, but I know Viktor would excel in YUM as well, whether it's in or out of the spotlight. He may not be a huge name in this year's monster rookie class, but he most definitely would not disappoint. (419 words, 8 TPE) 18. Goals Although your career may still be in its early stages, it's still a great time to think about the future. What are some goals you have for your career, or some personal goals for the site? Are you striving for a HOF induction? Getting a site job? For Viktor, I would love more than anything for him to inherit some of fellow QCC player Sophie Bordeleau's spark and see him really make his mark on both the Citadelles and SMJHL record books. And that's really not unique to anyone when it comes to their very first create, or really for any and all hungry recreates either. I'm sure there's no way in hell Vik makes it to #1 somewhere, whether it's in goals, points, or otherwise, but if he gets close I'll be one happy dingus. That extends to the SHL as well of course. I suppose the real goal is to make #11 truly memorable and not just another set of stats. It should also go without saying that winning all the things is a major goal, as part of a team and individually. Trophies aren't shiny for no reason. Short term: The dude also has pretty atrocious advanced stats and a lacklustre plus/minus this season, so it's a nagging goal for me to get him more up to snuff. We're both perfectionists by nature, for better or for worse. It always seems to bite me in the ass, but I'm confident that it will serve Viktor well. As for Lore aka myself, I'm actually really excited to try and walk the path towards being a competent GM. That would be massively cool insofar as my current outside impression of what it might be like. That may change as I learn more, if given the chance. In general I am intensely curious about how things work. Usually that manifests itself as tactile objects and things that I can take apart and put back together, but that very easily and often translates to things I can't hold in my hands. If being a GM doesn't turn out to be in the cards for me, I'd also love to get involved with the head office or really any "behind the scenes"-type job. I've already got one very small part in that as a wee rookie task grader, and I'm enjoying it so far. Spreadsheets? Heck yeah. I don't have any real desire to be #1 in the way I want it for Viktor (and probably every single player I have in the future, let's be honest). I just really want to continually learn, and understand and be part of the SHL. At first glance, it feels like a much more realistic and attainable set of goals compared to my hopes for Viktor, but we'll seeeeeeeeee! (418 words, 8 TPE)

Fan Appreciation Day In the tradition of the traditional Berserker Bear Warriors the Newfoundland Berserkers will be giving away bear pelts to fans of all ages. Let's face it, our Newfies get gold and what better way to keep our hearts and bodies warm than a pelt of a recently slain bear. It's fun for the whole family. (55 words)(1 TPE) 2. Looking Towards the Future The dead last Newfoundland Berserkers are in a good position to improve upon their position in the standings next season. It is expect that the Zerkers will only lose one player to the SHL next season however it will be an impactful one with Faust Faker ready to make the jump. Faker was a part of that top line that produced most of the scoring for the Zerkers this season. Coming in at 51 points (19 goals, 32 assists) Faker's leadership will be missed. Top team, and top 10 league goal scorer, Brennan Kennedy III is poised to make a triumphant return. Can he make a run at the scoring title? This pundit thinks, YES. Coming in at 57 points (35 goals and 22 assists) Kennedy will miss line mate Faker but has the talents to elevate anyone placed on that line. Fellow Season 67 draftees Otto Steinberger Jr, Rasmus Bergling and Pope Cowsi Jr will look to make an impact as they continue their traning and rise through the ranks. Steinberger has put in a LOT of training in the last two weeks and has really improved his offensive skill set. We should see a big improvement in production there. Bergling has also put in the training heavily over the past could of weeks. He has possibly come close to maxing out his potential at this level and looks to add a lot of positivity to this squad going forward. Cowsi Jr has been seen hitting the training room a bit and looks to make some slow and steady improvements. The Zerkers hope that he can continue this upward trend as they will need scoring to climb their way out of their cellar. This year's Rookie class looks promising for the Zerkers with rookies Philip Fry, Lester Oiduser, Tummy Hurts, Matiss Ozolinsh, and Hingle McCringleberry. The rookie class for the Zerkers has been very active and hitting that training hard with the majority of the group using every opportunity available to improve their skill and contribution to the team. Lester Oiduser and Philip Fry had been paired together all season long including the opportunity to quarterback the second power play for Newfoundland. They have both been training hard and look to become the top defensive pair for the Zerkers. They have the potential to be offensive threats as well as helping keep the puck out of the net. This duo is a bright spot for this team's future. Ozolinsh has matched the training efforts of Fry and Oiduser to help become a new scoring threat on the right wing. This what the Zerkers really need to improve. Tummy Hurts and Hingle McCringleberry both are both making incremental improvements. They both look to become blue chip assets and help solidify the lineup in the future. Newfoundland have also made a late FA signing in John Hopoate. If history does indeed repeat itself regarding training he will be a very welcome addition. The future looks bright for the Newfoundland Berserkers. They have a lot of dedicated and talented players that have the potential of taking the Zerkers to the next level. We may have had a very tough season but look for this team to be competing for the Cup in the next couple of seasons. Quoting Timbuk 3, "The future is so bright, I gotta wear shades". (557 Words)(11 TPE) 15. R&R Philip Fry will be spending the upcoming downtime with family & friends. He will catch up with his 12 times great nephew Hubert Farnsworth for whom he used to work for as a delivery boy for Planet Express delivery. He will get into some trouble with his old best pal Bender Bending Rodriguez. They may be bad for society but they're great for each other. He will of course spend the majority of his time with his one true love, Leela. They will reminisce and plan for the Future(ama). (89 Words) (1TPE)

Fan Appreciation Day (208 Words - 4 TPE) This year the Kelowna Knights have really out done themselves with the fan appreciation day gifts. On the final day of the regular season the team held a "Knighting Game" where every fan in attendance was knighted after entering the arena and was given a commemorative Kelowna Knights sword to celebrate the end of the SMJHL Season and to thank the fantastic knights fans. The ceremony was spectacular and grand with the entire stadium chanting and waving their new swords around in the air prior to the start of the game. The marketing director was fired directly after the game due to the cost of the event, the final tally is still unconfirmed but reports are coming in with a figure of around 5.5 million dollars for the merchandise. Unfortunate for the marketing team, but the fans loved the gesture stating they will never miss another knights game again. Interviews with the fans after the game were cut short due to a sword fight breaking out in the parking lot sending 3 people to the hospital with minor injuries. Reports indicate the fans in charge of starting of the skirmish were just to try out their new swords and were not aware how sharp they actually were. 4. Funtimes (252 Words - 5 TPE) The Kelowna Knights have had a long and hard fought season, with that in mind after their unfortunate loss in the first round of the SMJHL playoffs they have decided to treat themselves with an extravagant trip to some place with warmer weather. During the offseason the team will be heading down to Las Vegas for a much needed break. The plan is to let loose and relax for their entire week long stay. The team has a huge passion for golf, with plans to play at least 18 holes everyday. Following golf there are many different rooftop pool parties planned along with numerous trips to the casinos on the strip. We let the team know that it will be an expensive weekend for sure, coaches have cautioned us to ensure the players do not spend all their money at the casino on the first couple days. They told us a couple horror stories of players having to head home early because they bet their whole savings on a game of roulette. The whole weekend will be rounded out with a michelin star dinner at the world famous Joel Robuchon at the MGM Grand Hotel. All in all the team is very excited for the nice weather and to hit the links on this great team building experience. 16. Charity Drive (204 words - 4 TPE) Over the off season, some of the Kelowna Knights players participated in the "I Can Ride" Program hosted by Stride. This effort was lead by rookie Adam Liebold, as he rallied the rest of his rookie class to participate. The players took a week of their time to volunteer with the program and teach children with mental and physical disabilities such as autism and down syndrome how to ride a bike. The programs is a week long and pairs each camper with a team of volunteers that following them around a track as they learn to ride a bike, The campers start out on a bike with a roller instead of a back wheel to provide more stability. As the children get used to riding the rollers change and progressively resemble a normal wheel. The volunteers get the opportunity to learn about their campers and help them adapt to the feeling of riding a bicycle. After the week was up the Knights players were disappointed the session was over, they really enjoyed spending time with the campers and helping them learn. The rookies went back to the team and have convinced the rest of the players to sign up for the session next summer.

Prompt #13
Liam Logger is a man of superstition, and i don't mean, "tie his skate in a certain way", "eat the same meal before the big game", or arrive at the rink at the same time everyday sort of superstitious, I mean REAL supersitious. Liam Logger wakes up every game day at 4:30 and MUST milk cows that morning, if he doesn't he always plays awfully. He folds his pants a certain way while stepping into his work shoes and milks each cow the exact same way every time. He then uses small straw bales for forty-seven curls on each arm and he bench presses the bale at least 147 times but usually 247 times. He then heads home to work on his breakfast where he makes his scrambled eggs. He uses exactly one and one-forty-seventh cups of milk in his scrambled eggs and uses 4 eggs. He then puts it in a bowl and pours exactly four redbulls into it to get him fired up for the long day ahead of him. He then takes his set of travel bales, two ten pound bales that fit nicely into a suitcase, and uses them to and be running weight until 2:47 where he eats lunch. Liam Logger’s game day lunch consists of breakfast leftovers a freshly made batch of deep fried cheese, as to support the dairy industry. Liam Logger then takes a 1 hour, forty-seven minute nap before promptly showing up at the arena at 5:47, much later than most of his fellow Kraken members. He then fits exactly forty-seven strips of tape on his stick as to give it good grip and to make sure the stick doesn’t get chipped or wrecked by his epic shots. His post game superstition is also quiet interesting, after the game he goes and unravels all forty-seven strips of tape off his stick, rolls them into a ball, and throws it at the garbage forty-seven times, purposefully missing the first forty-six as to make it on the forty-seventh. If he accidentally makes it on any of the previous forty-six throws, which he feels he must at least get close for, he has to restart. After doing this rigorous task he showers for however long he feels like because showers feel good and everyone else has already showered by this point so it’s free for him to stand in the nice hot water and relax a bit. After he showers he packs up his hockey equipment and makes sure his helmet is in the very bottom of the bag since he scored his first hattrick the game after doing that when he was seven years old. He proceeds to walk back to his apartment under heavy disguise as to not be recognized because he thinks the fresh air is good for him after a hard game. Once he arrives at his place he takes a forty-seven minute nap before playing forty-seven minutes of SHL65 the game made by AE sports, a quality company that does exactly what the fans want and create some excellent hockey based games. He then eats one last meal and that’s pepperoni pizza, with exactly seven peperoni pieces per slice of cheesy goodness. He then goes to bed to get ready for his break day superstitions. For his break day he gets his girlfriend to make him four pancakes and seven eggs to start the day off right, with a redbull as his drink. He the does 147 curls with each arm on his travel bales as well as taking a fourty-seven minute run. After getting back from his run he must spend at least two to four hours beating Derek Martin at SHL68 the game made by AE sports which is a quality company that makes quality games. After that he logs onto his simulation hockey league to interact with people and get his points for the day to make his player better. The simulation league he plays in is called the AHL for association hockey league. He then spends forty-seven minutes talking to each member of his family on the phone to catch up with them and make sure them and their families are doing alright, as well as planning get togethers when he’s back near them again. Liam Logger then usually has some free time he likes to spend doing random things or plans he had previously made with friends and family. He usually just ends up chilling in his room however browsing YouTube watching hockey clips and seeing what he could do better in his own game. He then gets to repeat this process over and over again the next day, week, an season as a whole since he believes he would suck to much to be in the SMJHL if he didn’t stick to his rigorous and superstitous schedule. 804 words

Prompt 14
(-ick) The image from a camcorder comes to life. It’s years old, barely used, or perhaps brand new to the user. The image is of a back wall, but one made hastily, as the bright sunlight peers through cracks in the wood. There’s a dresser, handmade, sitting right in frame, with a few books, some on language and most on various stories, all graphic novels, in Vietnamese and English. There are two books on hockey propped on top of the rest. A face pops out from the side of the camera, from the arm movement, it’s clear this person turned it on. He clears the spot he’s put the camera on and leans in to sit down in front of the camera. It’s a boy, not older than nine. He’s clearly struggled with getting the recording to work, but a mound of enthusiasm shows through. “<<Uh, hello! I’m Hai Nam Hoang, and I’m making a video of me practicing.>>” Hoang exits the frame, and a moment later, a violent jerking motion can be seen on the video. Fumbling noises can be heard mixing with birds and frogs chirping as the camera is taken out into the open air. The frame settles on a dusty dirt road, the camera sitting on a chair on a wooden porch overlooking a breathtaking display of rice farms and blue hills dotted with thousands of trees. Sparce clouds dotted the otherwise clear sky. The frame only just captures the boy with a hockey stick and a puck. The harsh dirt makes his ability to control the puck and keep it where he wants it a challenge, but he seems to be doing fine enough to make himself content. After five minutes, a yell from behind the camera snaps him out of his focus, and he drops his stick and grabs the camera. More harsh noise is heard before the footage stops abruptly. When the image returns, it shows the boy, a bit bigger and noticeably a year older, with full hockey gear sitting on a bench, leaning down to tie his skates. “<<Tight enough?>>” The voice is an older man, middle forties, perhaps. From the rough stability of the frame, it is safe to assume he’s the one holding the camera. The boy finishes his double-knot, and stands up. He wavers for a second as his blades even out, and then be begins a slow, waddling walk out of the room. The camera follows the boy out to a rink, plastered with advertisement and slightly worn. The boards are wooden, masked by coats of peeling white paint. Several people skate casually, a few faster than the others. The boy finds the makeshift door, struggles with the deadbolt lock at first before prying the door open. He looks back for a moment at his dad, his eyes peering above the camera. Curls of hair hide one of his eyes, bit the other shows a hint of hesitation. They share a glance before he turns around and takes one step on the ice, and then another. The blades carry him forward, and he leans back instinctively as if to brace for a collision in front of him, but he then pulls his body forward, and bends his knees. The shaking stops, and when the boy turns his right foot slightly and pushes off, he glides forward. He then repeats with his left, slowly getting faster and faster. One full lap later, and he finds the same spot he came out from, the camera still stationary, following him glide around the small, wet rink. He stomps his foot down and turns his foot, violent enough to make him stop, but he does not bring his other foot into the maneuver, and his knee on his extended foot drops to the ice, before he picks himself up. His face finds the person with the camera again, but there is no hesitance anymore. In its place is a beaming smile, one you would expect to follow with a deep, bright laugh. The camera feed cuts yet again. The scene changes again. It’s now a bunk, spartan in quarters with only a white painted wall and a single window. The camera faces a bed, and in that bed is our small boy, again a little bigger. He sits atop the side of the bed. Noise is coming from the other side of the camera, muted by a wall. It’s a loud, boisterous conversation, being carried out in Japanese. The child has his head in his hands. He’s crying. The footage is the shortest of the past three scenes before we lose him in static. When we return again, the camera is no longer an antique camcorder, it’s now clearly a phone. We find the scene settle on the floor, moving rapidly. Two legs walk across a tile surface. The phone’s camera then jerks up and turns around, and we see the boy again, now a young man. The landscape is now clearly a decent-sized airport. The boy is in good spirits, and looks ahead while he speaks. “<<Mom, Dad, we’re in Great Falls now. We’re ahead of schedule, and I just wanted to send you this video to let you know I’m here and we got here alright. Borys thinks our coach might not be here yet, so whether we have to wait or not, I don’t know. I love you guys, and I miss you. I can’t wait until you get out here, it’s like nothing back home.>>” We then look to the side. We see a tall, dark man, heavily bearded, and in his mid-30s. He has a phone he’s intently watching, occasional typing or texting. The camera spins back to the face of the young man, who gives a sarcastic look of concern before looking ahead. “<<Brother Bear!>>” The busy chatter of the concourse is broken by a loud call, and the young man snaps to attention before moving his camera to show a man thirty yards away, with a sign with his name on it, waiving, but not looking at him. Suddenly, the man beside him runs forward, momentarily startling the young man, who quickens his step to catch up to him. He catches up to see the two men embracing. They exchange words in their native Polish, which the young man can’t decipher, before attention shifts. “It’s very nice to meet you, young man. We’ve got a lot of work to do and I’ve heard a lot about you. We’re happy to welcome you to Great Falls.” The man speaks accentuated English, but the young man follows him well. The man hustles the two out the door, before the feed cuts and the video is abruptly paused. “That’s just the coolest thing you can imagine, right?” Chris Valentine cuts in. The team is at a bar, celebrating their first playoff win. The series is only tied at two, but the Grizzlies were expected to be swept. “I still can’t believe they have footage from that far back. Is that really where he learned how to play in Vietnam, on that road?” Manny Calavera interjects, he holds the phone. “It’s a picturesque place to live, for sure.” Loosh O’Sullivan asks the question in everyone’s mind. He leans forward to look at everyone’s face. “Has Hoang seen it?” They all turn. Hai Nam Hoang sits as far away from the bar as he can, attached to the scrum that is his teammates, but still detached. He was in perhaps the best mood they had ever seen him in since he joined the team in July, scoring the goal in the fourth overtime to win them the game they’re celebrating. He’s back in a funk now, which alarmed the three men watching the video. “How could he have not seen this, Half of Montana has seen it.” Manny says, more hushed. “I’ll ask him,” O’Sullivan says, while he removes himself from his bar seat. “He knows me better than most of us.” The other two men think about interjecting or going along with him, but they change focus to the rest of the video. On the other side of the room, O’Sullivan approaches Hoang, who is leaning over his phone, a half-drank glass of water sitting to his side, the ice long-since melted. Loosh tries to approach softly, but Hoang pops his head up immediately. “I’m alright. I just don’t want to drink.” He says. O’Sullivan locks up for a second, before responding. “We’re not worried about that. There’s this video we found, it was posted before the game and we wanted to know…” “I have.” Hoang’s interjection slams O’Sullivan’s train of thought to a halt, though he was ready for either response. “I just wanted to ask what you think of it. It’s a nice video, but I can see how someone wouldn’t want it released, you know? I bit personal.” Hoang’s face betrays no emotion, but he does not move to assuage his concern with his expressions. “It’s out, people like it. It’s what it is now.” “Who did release it then?” Loosh responds. He then quietly winces to himself. He wanted to ask the question, but it came out as confrontational, too personal, exactly what he feared he’d do. “Dunno.” Hoang’s response is pointed and clear. Rehearsed. He’s lying. O’Sullivan looks down, back at his teammates watching the rest of the video, then leans forward to put a hand on Hoang’s shoulder. “You did good today, buddy. Better than all of us. We’re with you, try to have some fun.” He then turns and heads back to the bar. Hoang’s eyes follow him. He then gets and walks outside, searching the contacts in his phone. Finding what he wants, he presses the name, then waits for the call to begin connecting. He then puts it on speaker, balances his arm on his stomach, and stares ahead. “<<Hello, honey.>>” “<<Hi, Mom. Played a good game today. Won. I want to ask you about a video everyone’s watching.>>” “<<Oh, yes. Your father is learning how to make videos in his computer, and he found your old video recorder and decided to put it together. Did you watch it? He’s very proud of it.>>” His mother’s words sting the back of his throat. “<<You should have asked me before you sent it. If you wanted me to see it you should have just sent it to me directly.>>” “<<You know your father. Speaking of which, he’s heading out to a function and I promised to go with him. I know you’ll understand at some point. We love you.>>” Hoang wants to respond, but he never got the words he wanted. The stinging is harder now, and he can feel his nose and eyes start to signal that tears are coming. He wants to say something. He wants to say goodbye, he wants to say he loves them, he really wants to say that his journey is his own, and to post the video is against what he wants for himself. But he has no words. He just holds the phone in front of him. The dark May air thick with the sound of birds and toads, singing and croaking. The phone makes no noise for two seconds. Two seconds that last sixteen years. “(cli-)” (1885 Words, max 16 tpe) https://simulationhockey.com/showthread....pid3277645 (2 TPE Claimed from Milestones)

Milestones - (3 TPE)
Prompt 12 - (200 words, 4 TPE) Up next on our countdown to the SHL draft is Heath Nicol. The 6'4", 215 lbs native of Australia played on the North American sheet of ice for the first time after spending the previous two season playing in Sweden's developmental league. While there were plenty of learning curves for the rugged right shot defenceman, there were also great flashes that became more regular as the season moved on and he became more comfortable with his team and the style of game. On the outside, Nicol plays a shutdown role. His ability to take away space and clog up shooting lanes proved to be valuable this season as he finished third on the Timber in blocks and was top 5 amongst rookies in that same category. Nicol is a strong skater for his size and uses his speed to stay in position, but scouts would like to see him translate those skills to the offensive side of the game as well, where he posseses all the tools to be a puck moving defenceman. Going into this season's draft, I view Nicol as a 2nd to 3rd round prospect who has the tools to turn into an effective top 4 defenceman. TOTAL TPE: 7

Prompt: 2. Looking Towards the Future As we near the end of S67, the SMJHL draft will be happening soon. Going into next season, what are your team's biggest needs and areas of strength? Do any holes need to be filled with call-ups? Do you have a position that is incredibly stacked? Give us all an overview of your team, from top to bottom. With the draft class of S69 set to be a world-beater in terms of size and activity, SMJHL teams across the board are looking to pick up great players, even in later rounds. Teams that have mortgaged first and second round picks for present success may still have ample opportunity to add great individuals who will contribute to their roster, should the draft class of S69 swell to an immense pool of players. Anchorage, fresh off of a first-round playoff exit to the St. Louis Scarecrows, are an already young team coming out of a rebuild that began in S63. A majority of the current Armada are players from the S67 and S68 classes, who have at least two or three seasons to be available for SMJHL eligibility before moving on to the SHL. The S67’s will be moving to their capped 425 builds, and the S68’s will settle into their 350 caps, so things are looking bright for the boats. However, in order to shore up the team’s already strong roster and ensure that Anchorage can boast a long stretch of competitive high-end play, the S69 class will need to play a strong part. With the opportunity to build an SMJHL dynasty, here’s what Anchorage is most likely to look for to compliment their existing team: Center: While Anchorage has two young studs in Connor McKeil (S67) and Sebastien Regazzoni (S68) playing pivot, their only other natural center, Luka Magic, is a S65 draftee, and has stalled in their development. While that means Magic will likely not crack an SHL roster and be sent back for another season, he needs to be replaced sooner rather than later before he ages out of the SMJHL. As well, wingers currently fill the bottom-6 center gap, so adding at least one, if not two, centers would be vital to increasing Anchorage’s shallow center depth. This is likely the greatest immediate area of need, as Anchorage is currently short at least one active center slot, and soon to be two unless a winger transitions to center. Anchorage had only three players, including the previously-mentioned McKeil and Regazzoni, who had more than (as low as) 40 faceoffs this season and cracked above a 50% faceoff percentage, an abysmal statistic. Any active rookie pivot drafted from the S69 class will likely see a great amount of opportunity in Anchorage as soon as next season. Backup goaltending: Anchorage already has an amazing S67 starter in August Von Hecht. The German netminder is the clear starter, and young enough for a potential two additional seasons of SMJHL eligibility before being called up, so there is no immediate concern between the pipes. However, Anchorage’s current backup goaltender is an aging 155 TPE inactive, and could easily be upgraded this draft. The timing is right so that an active S69 goalie drafted by the Armada would develop and reach the 425 TPE cap right as Von Hecht is called up to SHL duties, providing a seamless transition of power between top-flight goaltenders. Defense: Anchorage can boast defense as an area of strength. It has both an active and young D-core, with one S66 capped defender (Philippe-Eko Eel), and a cadre of S67 and S68 players, with a good mix of right-side and left-side defenders. The only area to address here is to add a sixth defenseman, for as of this offseason Anchorage only has five defenders listed on the roster. Adding one more good active blueliner would compliment an already impressive defensive squad. Wingers: This is currently the least area of concern for Anchorage, with six wingers around or above 350 TPE, and a majority of those at the 425 cap. However it should be noted that while the majority of Anchorage’s wingers are near the SMJHL cap, they are also the oldest section of the team, with four wingers being members of the S65 or S66 SHL draft classes. This is significant, as Anchorage only has 7 players that old on the roster (one of which is the inactive backup, who could easily be replaced by a younger inactive if needed), so the clear majority of their next wave of eventual call ups and age-outs will be wingers. They have only one S68 winger on the roster for next season, Ignacio Garza (that’s me!), so if they meet their immediate areas of need in the initial rounds of the draft, Anchorage would probably be happy to take a few wingers with any late picks they have, to shore up an aging area of the team for eventual replacement. While next season is pretty solidified, any wingers drafted to Anchorage this off season will likely see a large jump in ice time come their sophomore year due to the current winger core aging out. (Over 750 words, for a total claim of 14 TPE. Plus the two milestone TPE for a total of 16) Total Bonanza claim: 16 TPE Thank you to Ham and Sulo for the sigs!
