S69 PT #2: Contract Talks February 5th @ 11:59 PM (PST)
#61

There have been a number of things that Jarrod Lakemore has missed since coming across the pond from England, and only recently has he learned just how easily he could leverage contract talks into procuring some of those things that are harder to come by in the States. The first and by far most important thing that Lakemore has missed are Jaffa Cakes. While ubiquitous in England, they are virtually unknown in the USA and there doesn't seem to be any analogous chocolate and orange snack product to replace them. A box of Jaffa Cakes ready for him at the locker room postgame is the first and most important stipulation of his contract. His second special request is to have tea ready for him during the second intermission. Truly there can be no better way to reset your mind and refocus on the most important period of the game than a nice cuppa. Jarrod naturally prefers Earl Grey and speculates his third period performances have vastly improved since he incorporated it into his game ritual.

CREATIVE PROMPT

Walton does not require any weird or over the top conditions in his contracts. But he does like routines and wants to eliminate certain elements of daily life that could cause extra stress or discomfort. So there are a few things he has demanded to keep life running smoothly.

The clauses:
- nobody is allowed say a word to Mr. Stromberg in the morning until Mr. Stromberg initiates a conversation
- Mr. Stromberg's locker room stall needs to have an ice cold can of Red Bull waiting for him upon arrival every day that he enters team facilities before 10 am
- Mr. Stromberg needs to have a private chauffeur in his use during team building dinners and other similar kind of events, such as bar and restaurant visits with any team members
- at any time, and as often as he wishes, Mr. Stromberg is entitled to request new completely custom designed hockey equipment (such as skates or sticks) from any hockey equipment manufacturer

Player Prompt Written Task: When contract negotiations come around, Mats Marner usually relies on his agent to help them secure the best possible deal. My agent has a deep understanding of Marne’s worth in the market and will be able to negotiate with the team on Mats Manrer’s behalf. In addition to the agent, Marner like to also consult with financial advisors and family members to ensure that the contract is in their best interest financially. During the negotiations, Marner and his representative will meet with team representatives, including the owner, general manager, and team president, to discuss the terms of the contract. Marner’s representative will use their understanding of the player's value in the market and the team's financial situation to negotiate the best possible salary, signing bonus, and other incentives. The goal is to come to a mutually beneficial agreement that meets the player's financial and career goals. At the end of the day though Marner sees himself finishing his career with Chicago and wants to do what is best for the team.

What do we know about Marton Diehm? Frankly, not much. He likes German food and Survivor and playing hockey. So yeah, he loves making money playing hockey, but he's going to make sure he gets paid in the others as well! The team cafeteria must offer at least three of the following every day: bratwurst, knackwurst, bockwurst, currywurst, weisswurst, and bierwurst. There must also be ample spätzle and knödel with no fewer than five mustard options. After ever game, there should be apfelkuchen waiting, with black forest gateau required if Marton registers a point. The team is also required to provide Marton with a tape of every Survivor episode by noon the day after it airs. Yes: a VHS tape because Marton will keep using his old RCA tapeplayer until someone pries it from his cold, dead heads. And lastly - though he cannot stress this enough - his Survivor buffs get hand-washed in cold water with gentle unscented detergent, hung to dry (do not put in a machine), folded into quarters, and placed in chronological order on the top shelf of his locker. It is just not that hard people.

PLAYER PROMPT

Throughout his young SMJHL and SHL career, Jack McCarthy has continued to rely upon his father for mentorship and advice. Aside from being his father and having raised him, Jack McCarthy relies on his father because the elder McCarthy actually played professional hockey back in his day. Given his experience, Jack's father has been able to share some of the trade secrets with his son and perhaps most importantly, has been able to advise him on where he felt he went wrong on negotiations back in the day. The biggest piece of advise Mr. McCarthy gave his son as he graduated from the SMJHL to SHL is to never take anything for granted, and to make the most out of any opportunity he is given. This allowed for Jack to feel more comfortable when talking with teams and signing his name in ink after being welcomed into Texas.

Jack McCarthy's father has always had his son's best interest at heart, and now that Jack enters his professional playing days, the experience and wisdom that his father has will certainly prove to be very valuable.

Ricky Koivu has a couple special clauses that he wishes to force General Manager Max Brannagan into adding in for him, clauses that he deems necessary although not actually in writing. Firstly, he demands for free reign to fly out to Toronto for Hamilton frat house parties so long as he can make it back by the next Forge game. Ricky's partying time is something that is very dear to him considering how low key he is most of the time, and he wants to ensure its something he has license to do. His second clause which is actually already in effect and has been since call up, is that Ricky cannot legally take more than 120 shots on goal in a season, because he apparently hates scoring goals that much. Why Koivu specifically requests to not shoot the puck very much at all despite being a winger is something that even confuses Brannagan, who begrudgingly agrees to the request anyway. These two clauses both look very detrimental on a surface level, and could definitely explain lapses in Ricky's production. (182 words)

Ragnar doesnt really rely on anyone when it comes to contract talks. Having come into the league wealthy enough as it is his main focus when it comes to contracts is what is going to put the team in an advantageous enough position to capitalize on cap space and be better for it in the long run. Surely that extra money that might be put aside from hin would be better suited in the pockets of one of his less fortunate team mates or a team prospect who is trying to get a footing financially in the world. At the end of the day as long as ragnar can pay his bills, he is happy, especially if it means others can get as strong as he can when it comes to training and purchasing it. That said hes not opposed to putting clauses in his contract like “Ragnar refuses to be traded to a Canadian team”

Sarah Burke is getting up in age so she really appreciates having a few extra comforts to help her enjoy the game some more. As part of her contract, she just requests having comfy accommodations for road games (king bed, jacuzzi tub, you know, nice things like that), easy access to unlimited amounts of coffee in the morning (and maybe even some double espressos just for good measure), and a comfy temperature controlled ride to and from the arena (she likes Jeeps the best but a limo or something would be super cool too). She also asks that her accommodations make room for her puppy, who makes everything about life much happier. Also, Panthers alumni who have come and gone in her several seasons with the team have to make an occasional appearance to visit and chat about how things are going over a beer or two or three and delicious food either selected or made by the most culinary savvy Panthers.

What a coincidence, my contract is up after this season and I need to negotiate a new one with @CampinKiller and the Montreal Patriotes.

First thing I am looking for in a new contract with Montreal is security. Security that I am part of this teams long term plans. I have no intention to jump ship and I am poised to become the best player the Montreal Patriotes have ever had. I am dedicated to go all the way till the end of my career.

Also part of my contract will be a no trade clause to several teams. One of them being Minnesota Monarchs. They are just a bad team and have been bad ever since I joined the site pretty much. Another team would be Edmonton Blizzard. While I adore @HabsFanFromOntario it is the history I have with them (former player being a Calgary Dragons legend) it just makes it akward.

Last thing I would demand is that there's fresh IPA's after each game in the locker room available.

I don't ask for much and give a lot in return ;-)

Gatez just wants a fridge filled with beer in the locker room at the end of every game. The fridge must always have enough for the entire team to have at least 2 beers. The breweries represented should be in constant rotation and should be a sampling of what the breweries offer. Every game, win or lose, home or away, every teammate gets to share a brand new beer from a brand new brewery from across the states and Canada. One game its a brewery from Portland Oregon, the next its from Atlanta Georgia. Over the course of a few seasons, this will expose the whole locker room to a world outside of their city. It will also be a full on team building exercise where people can talk about their favorites and the biggest let downs. Of course there are always the few people that dont enjoy beer, so they will have a selection of different seltzers.

For my contract with whoever it may be or maybe resigning with the Renegades, there will definitely be a lot of clauses listed in the contract to protect my player. The first clause of the contract is that in every game, if you score while Meowski is on the ice, and he does not have a goal yet, the goal is credited to him. He wants to be a big scoring star, so goals have to be attributed to him when they are scored. The second is that if you do not score when Meowski passes to you in a scoring opportunity, you owe him $1,000. For every award that he Meowski is eligible for and he does not get nominated, the GM's must pay him $10,000. For every award that Meowski does win, he makes a $100,000 per award. Once Meowski has three trophies to his name all of these clauses become moot and Meowski will play the rest of his days and earn his own way. He just wants to get a head start on being eligible for trophies.

When it comes to special conditions in the in Nibble's contract it is all about the food. Being a squirrel means that the dietary restrictions of Nibbles are more numerous than his fellow human counterparts on the team and because of this Nibbles makes sure that it is specifically stated in his contract that certain foods be kept in easily accessible locations. The first is that before every game it is a requirement that Nibbles be given access to a whole jar of peanut butter. It is his favorite snack and it is chalk full of all the energy that Nibbles needs to go out on the ice and play his best hockey. Outside of food it is important that Nibbles receives a massage after every game. His little legs are under a lot more strain than everyone else's out there on the ice so he needs the extra care and attention to make sure he is operating at peak physical fitness.

Prompt 2:

Ignacio Garza, coming from Spain, thankfully speaks a few other languages well enough to get by in the SMJHL and the hockey world in North America, but prefers to have a Spanish and English speaker present his interests with teams during contract negotiations. Thankfully, through a friend of a friend, Garza has a celebrity agent to talk to team representatives/GMs in the form of Antonio Banderas. Famed for his acting roles like "Zorro" and "The dad from the Spy Kids movies", he has a dazzling personality and natural charm that catches other negotiators off guard, allowing for a potentially favourable set of conditions for Garza. Even against the toughest negotiators, Banderas only needs to pull out his dance moves from his time working on "take the lead" to win over the hardest of hearts. This strategy has allowed Garza to sneak in a clause into his contracts that allows him to park his car for free anywhere in Anchorage or San Francisco (it saves a lot more money than you would think)

Prompt 1

Ever since Julian Flörsh has been living on his own, every day hes either eating out, or resorting to nothing but fast and easy food. Boxed pasta, burgers and fries, pizza, takeaway tacos, grilled cheese sandwiches, loaded fries, chow mein, springrolls, fried chicken, the list is endless but it's all not very nutritious. The reason for this is that, since his mom was a fantastic cook and always home to take care of dinner, Julian never really learned how to cook properly. So as a part of his contract negotiations with the Minnesota Monarchs he's had a special condition added to his contract: For as long as he's under contract, the Monarchs are to hire a professional chef at least three nights a week. THe chef is not supposed to provide dinner for Julian, but instead should teach him how to cook and take care of his own food properly. Not only will this lead to Julian making better food choices, but it'll also open up a career as a restaurant owner once his hockey career is over.
