There are quite a few in the lead for the SMJHL MVP. But sadly the MVP almost always goes to forwards because they get gaudy stats compared to Defenders and Goaltenders.
That said we can just see that Thomas Sawschuk is just tearing everyone else up. Leading the rest of the pack in points by 7 points while also being top three in both goals and assists. And not even in the top 10 of shots. I think that if the pace keeps up that Sawschuk will walk away with the MVP this season. But even if they don't there are a few other great choices. Boho Biscuit has been one of the most impactful defenders this season with 43 points, 37 assists, and 208 blocked shots. Just kind of being all over the ice. Which ultimately is very important to the end product on the ice and the production of the team in general. I'd also consider Jeff Hunziker. Not the best pick but just an offensive juggernaut and a shot generation machine. If only the player was able to finish a bit better they'd easily be leading the league in points. 275 shots over the course of the season is just nuts and if their shot could beat teams more reliably they'd maybe be the choice this season for MVP. SMJHL HO PEANUT!
A long long time ago I developed and utilized a ranking system called an "Impact Rating" that I used for draft time media. It was just a new and different way to determine hot prospects from not prospects. Turns out, this method gives a very unbiased look at MVP offerings as well using unbiased math in the process. As such, I'm pleased to provide my top three recommendations for league MVP this season.
#3. Inactive Forever - Right Wing - Vancouver Inactive Forever, played by user @kit actually came in at the top of our impact rating list with a score of 118. However as part of the evaluation process, bank account totals are also taken into consideration. With a net value of -$1.3 Million in the bank, while able to capitalize currently off a stacked Vancouver team, long term outlook could be bleak unless they were able to acquire additional funds to continue improving and evolving in the league. #2. Lily Jin Morrow - Left Wing - Vancouver Morrow, played by user @Shiamus is another from a stacked and very dominant Vancouver team this season. Morrow actually came in third overall in the impact rating list with a score of 113. With a bank account total of $6.5 Million SHL bucks, this player has some breathing room to continue improving and dominating on the ice. If they were to continue on their current pace, I wouldn't be surprised to see them turn some heads in the SHL when eventually called up. #1. - MVP Main Candidate - Thomas Sauschuck - Center - Nevada Sauschuck, played by user @Nokazoa is the top impact rating leader from Nevada and came in second overall in the score rating with a score of 115. Nokazoa, while also having a cushion of a bank account at $48.1 Million SHL bucks, there's no doubt that this player will capitalize on that bank account, plus any and all earned points sitting and waiting when they get called up next season to New England (that's merely an assumption on the call up). Based on the numbers though, I would be surprised to see Sauschuck not on the list of real MVP candidates for the SMJHL.

Everyone knows that MVP is typically given to the player that contributes the most on the ice. To be an MVP candidate, most people say your numbers need to be good or even flashy- this is why the award is typically dominated by forwards.
But what if a player is valuable in a different way? Shouldn’t they be recognized for that? For that reason, I choose to argue that Net Man of the Quebec City Citadelles deserves the nod. His impact on team unity cannot be understated, as he has served as a rallying point and leader for a team with a ridiculously high number of rookies as they make a run for the Cup, in a season more successful than just about any talking head or semi-respected journalist predicted. While his numbers may not be impressive compared to goalies around the league, let alone in comparison to any forwards whose names are being put forward (including those of his own teammates, Hunziker and Desjardins among them), he’s the most valuable in the intangibles. Net Man for MVP.

The top three players in the SMJHL's MVP race are:
Thomas Sawschuk Nevada's Thomas Sawschuk currently leads the SMJHL in points, with 90, coming by way of an even 40 goals and 50 assists. Sawchuk still could have a 50/50 or better season, which would absolutely cement him as the MVP in my eyes, as that would be an outrageous goal scoring achievement. Jeff Hunziker Jeff Hunziker follows Sawschuk in 2nd place, tied for goals with 40, but only having 43 assists to his name. The Quebec City player has been on fire all year and still has time to make his case for MVP and unseat Sawschuk, though he'll need more goals to do that. Speaking of goals. Mercedes Baylé Regina's Mercedes Bayle leads the league in goals with 41, though they only have 78 points compared to the other two on this list. Leading the league in goals is still nothing to sneeze at, and if Bayle can pull away from the pack, they will have a good shot of taking home the MVP award.

It'll be a tough race in a very stacked league but here are my top three candidates for MVP.
1. Thomas Sawschuk - The obvious choice for MVP. He's currently leading the league with 94 points (41 goals, 53 assists). Thomas has been taking the league by storm this season by centering an absolutely lethal line between Aksel VINSen and Brock Samson. His play has made it possible for the Battleborn to make a deep run in the playoffs. 2. Jeff Hunziker - This third year center has been having a monster season by tallying 88 points (42 goals, 46 assists) for the Quebec City Citadels. Jeff is currently tied for most goals scored in the league. Although he's on a struggling team, that doesn't stop him and his linemates from lighting the lamp consistently. S73 is his peak year after steadily improving each year in the SMJHL. 3. Mercedes Baylé - This exciting winger for Regina also has no problem finding the back of the net. He's tied with Jeff Hunziker for most goals scored this season (so far). Mercedes is a massive 6'11", 300 LB winger that's bigger than most defensemen. This is his fourth year in juniors, repeating similar success from last season. He has 83 points so far this season, netting 42 goals and 41 assists. He's on track to match his previous season's point total of 89. The only question is: can anyone stop this giant?

In my opinion, League MVP shouldn't just go to a player that's doing well across the board - but someone that's smashing particular, niche records left and right. You probably know who I'm talking about here, with my submission for league MVP being a (very humble) Bog Damsel. With more sim left to go, she has the MOST fight wins in the last 7 seasons and the most total fights in the last 9. How's that for setting a new tone in the league? This doesn't include her immediate impact on both Defense and Offense, placing second on the STL roster for both Assists and Blocks. While some areas of her game are rusty, she has been dominating the puck ever since she stepped onto the ice. This isn't even mentioning her franchise-record setting pace for penalty minutes, currently 45th all time on the Scarecrow roster and expecting to absolutely smash the previous #1 record. She's bringing a whole new energy to the league, and it'll shake out well for STL in the playoffs.

I mean if you're just looking at stats, the choices are pretty obvious. You pick the leader in points, the best goalie, and the best defenseman.
Leader in points - Thomas Sawschuk, this center leads the league with 94 points, and it being his last year in the J, it would be nice for him to win the award. Best goalie - Stun Gun. This guy is crazy, he leads the league in wins by a good margin, and comes third in save percentage. Is he really a carry for his team? Considering they have a goalie this good, and are only 3rd in the standings, I would say yes. Best defenseman - Honestly, defenseman are always snubbed for league MVP. A good defenseman just isn't flashy enough. With that said, the best defenseman is Nik Smith judging purely from the fact that he's leading the league in blocked shots. Are other defenseman stopping the shots from being taken in the first place? Maybe. But I think that this just shows how good of a defenseman Smith is. He doesn't need to stop the shots before they're taken, he'll just block them.

Frontrunners for the SMJHL League MVP are as follows:
Thomas Sawschuk: 63 GP, 43G, 54A for 97 points. This, combined with his +18 rating, and the fact that he has average OVER 3 minutes of BOTH Powerplay and Short-handed time on ice make him the obvious standout. Trusted in all situations, and producing at an elite level, and playing a solid two-way game. Next, I would make the case for Shadow Fenix. First of all, as a rookie, putting up 71 points (32G, 39A) in 65 games is quite impressive. However, Fenix also leads the league skaters in Shorthanded Time on Ice. Their point totals and success in the faceoff circle make them a solid choice for ROTY, if not also MVP. While Hunziker, leading the league in points, might be the obvious choice, I want to make the case for Brock Samson. Brock leads the league in Assists, with 59 in 63 Games Played. He is also above 3 minutes of both Powerplay and Shorthanded Time On Ice, and has maintained a very respectable +25 rating. Brock has been an all-situations play maker, and should be acknowledged for their high level of play.

To me Jeff Hunziker looks to be the front runner. The Center from Quebec City Citadelles is currently leading the league in points with 98. A combination of 47 goal league leading and 51 assists which is 8th in the league. For as much scoring as he does, he also spreading the love. Currently tied in shots at 311, the shot percentage sitting at 15.1. He is putting in the working and leading in most categories or sitting in the top 10. He is winning 47.9% of his faceoffs at 577 wins and 628 loses. Statically they are having a good season. Currently having their team sitting in second in the division. IM sure as the rest of the season goes on, they will only continue to see the stats go up as they continue to make their run to the MVP and hopefully open the way for the team to make the playoffs.

Axiomatically, if a player is the league's most valuable player, they are also the most valuable at their position or group of positions. Ergo, to answer this question, the smartest thing to do is pick out the league's top forward, top defenseman and top goaltender, and decide from there.
My vote for the league's Best Goaltender is Wayne Holloway. You can claim it's a homer pick, but the stats are clear - Wayne is tied for the highest game rating of all goaltenders in the league but couples that with an unenviable workload, playing 53 of Detroit's 64 games. And he has been shelled through those games, facing a league-high 1,895 shots and still keeping his save percentage over the key .900 benchmark. Many of these arguments can be made for Ally Mathieson of the Regina Elk but, bluntly, Holloway has had more of an impact on his team winning. Regina outscore Detroit as a team by close to a goal a game. For the league's Best Defenseman, I'm highlighting Nik Smith from Colorado. 42 points off 65 games isn't league-leading stuff - he rates around 15th among all defenseman - but what sets Smith apart are the minutes he logs. 23:34 average time on ice, but 4:10 on the powerplay and 3:14 short-handed speaks to Smith as being a player the Raptors look to first and foremost when they need a reliable hand. Slightly less noticed, his GA/TA ratio is excellent, well over 5.00, and he shows the willingness to block shots that coaches love from a team play. The league's Best Forward, however, is was always going to come down to offensive prowess and is realistically a two-horse race - Jeff Hunziker and Thomas Sawschuk. Both men have broken 40 goals, both have registered more than 50 assists, both are reliable powerplay presences, and making a decision between the two is incredibly difficult. But my choice is Thomas Sawschuk, and the reason why lies in the advanced stats. Both are elite play drivers, but Sawschuk's Corsi and Fenwick percentages are both among the league's highest while also rocking a PDO over below 100, suggesting he's put up the monstrous numbers he has without having the luck of the ice in his favour. So with that, the MVP? All three would be fair choices and I'm choosing to sit on the fence here.

Listen man, its the goalie dude Stun Gun from Anc-town. SCO BOATZ. he's top 5 in save percentage, saves and goals against average. He leads the league in wins by a FAR margin, and also leads the shutout category. Honestly tho, have you checked ou this Goals Saved Above Average? It made me think the formula was broken. 23.09 Are you out of your damn mind? Give this man the trophy already.
Okkay if i have to pick someone else just to finish off this assignment (ITS STUN GUN PEOPLE)... I guess I'd go with Sawschuk or whatever. He has a ton of points and leads in like goals and assists or something but i mean come on how hard is that to do. PROBABLY A LOT HARDER IF GUN IS IN GOAL TBH. Celeste Desjardins is cool too i guess. They'll probably win rookie of the year or wahtever even though that should totally go to Deep Thought no bias.

Thomas Sawschuk, representing the Nevada Battleborn is an obvious MVP candidate. Sawschuk currently tops the league charts in points and goals, establishing himself as a true sensation in terms of offensive prowess this year. Given the significant role that scoring statistics play in MVP deliberations, it's highly unlikely that Sawschuk's incredible performance will wane in the remaining games of the season. Consequently, he is my unequivocal pick as the frontrunner for the MVP title at this juncture.
Another athlete who I believe warrants serious consideration for the MVP accolade is none other than Sawschuk's Nevada teammate, I-Stir MyPudding. MyPudding leads all defensemen in scoring within the SMJHL, all the while delivering remarkable hits and takeaways. His exceptional performance on both ends of the rink merits significant recognition. Although I expect Sawschuk to secure the MVP, it's important to acknowledge the possibility of other players making a late-season push for the title.
