Hey guys,

We all like fun graphs and squiggly lines dont we. I like them the most, and since I have some coding skills, I can scrape the different websites in our sim league universe in order to get the health of the different leagues. And the growth they have experienced throughout time

Background:
In the world of simulation sports leagues, there are 2 different types of sim leagues.

You got the SHL, ISFL, PBE, and SSL. Where the league is based around earning money and doing PT’s. Where you can purchase training and coaching, money is more important in this league. The job economy in the SHL is run by it.

Then you got leagues like the VHL, EFL, SBA. Where its less money based, and more just PT based league. Where you do a weekly PT, whether thats media, graphic, podcast,or whatever else they have. And then the jobs they have you claim TPE instead of money

For our little slice of the sim league pie, since the ISFL, PBE, and SSL still rely on forum AC’s, it is very easy to scrape from their different websites in order to get their numbers. And then with the SHL recently switching to the portal, and their API. we are still able to get their activity check numbers as well.

Accuracy of Activity Checks:
Normally when determining who is actually active in the league, you want to look at who actually posted in the activity check, and then the last 2 or 3 AC’s to truly get a grasp on how many people you actually have in a sim league.

For example:
For the SHL we are currently sitting at 378 people claimed AC’s for this week. That number will grow and probably land at 410-430, as last week we did 421 people. So depending on recruitment and other factors, this week will end very well. But for the past 2 weeks, the amount of unique AC’s claimed, was 440 different users. The past 3 weeks, 455. So, if you want to know the true size of the SHL, its anywhere between the latest AC number(421) to 455 people.

So when you look at the ISFL, PBE, SSL a general guideline is to take the latest AC number of the completed week and add 15-30 to that number to get a true sense of the size of the league

History of Activity checks:

Activity checks was not a staple from the get go. The SHL, started in 2010, first implemented weekly activity checks in 2014. So for 4 years we truly don’t know the size of the SHL during that time. We can always guess / make assumptions by the size and growth of the league. And then there were seasonal check ins as well. But it doesnt give the full picture of the league. But the start of 2014, we are able to get a weekly updated number, of the rough size of the SHL. Then, once the ISFL, PBE and SSL was created as offshoots of the SHL, they started activity checks from day one, so it made it a lot easier to track their growth over time.

We all like lines, don't we? But we can see, the SHL having a good head start over all the other league, since the SHL is the OG. But you can see the cycles of all the sim leagues. The recruitment for each season, the fall off of the class and people going inactive. And then the constant struggle to break even or grow each season. The cycle of all sim leagues. Periods of sharp growth as you recruit, and then the eventual fall off as the class goes inactive and people leave. But, if you look closely, and know your sim league history, you can see the massive classes that helped boost different sim leagues into periods of growth. At the start of the SHL one, the large jump was the S20 draft class. At the end of 2018, was the S46 draft class. For ISFL the massive leap in 2020 from the r/nfl post.Then you see something that we can all recognize. The COVID bump. Where all the sim leagues grew, as people stay indoors, and were bored. Where sim leagues really expanded and brought in new people. With the SHL reaching 450 people at its peak in a weekly activity check. With the ISFL and PBE following as well. Then right at the start of 2022, you can see the 4th sim league come into existence that is still around. The SSL. Hopefully they can continue to survive and grow as well.I am sure other people who are more well versed in those sim leagues can give context to their periods of growth and stuff, but I am not in them, so it wouldnt be fair to call it out.

Takeaways:With the first season of the SHL portal, one buck to the trend is retention. Retention makes or break the sim league, and this season we see the dip of inactives not really have the level of drop off as we normally see from season to season. Now it's only 1 season, so we will have to see the trend continue. But its encouraging. The portal brought in a ton of people, whether that's from other sim leagues to try it, old members coming back, or the r/hockey post that was put up alongside it. But we saw a massive jump in people this season, which is always great to see. Rising tides lift all boats.

Never would have guessed more AC's done on the SHL then ISFL and PBE.

But what about parity in the SHL?

So you're saying the SHL should have the decision power in thos hegemon and WF is one step away from all powerful emporer?

It's pretty interesting that PBE seems to have a better staying power from the 2020 bump than the other leagues. Also what the hell happened in January/February 2023 in the ISFL? Looks like an 80 AC bump.

I imagine PBE had the better mid earner experience, percentage wise it looks like they only lost about half as much as SHL.

ISFL might be a post-superbowl reddit class?
