SHL GM S30 Cup Champion Never Going To Win A Cup
News coming out of Reykjavik this morning, top Icelandic prospect Ólafur Atlason has decided to join the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League with hopes of making the Simulation Hockey League one day. The 6'4'', 230 pound gentle giant arrives without much fanfare or introduction. His presence despite his imposing frame is almost laughably quiet, remaining in the background near invisible until he's asked directly for a comment on whether or not he hopes to get a big stick exception in the league responding with a quip a little too immature and obvious to type here. But that's similar to his game, he does his job solidly, waits for the right moment and strikes surprisingly hard usually leading to a goal, an assist or a fantastic chance for a teammate.
Coming out of what can only be described as a tier 8 international junior hockey program, his dominance against what many have called "fishermen and the elderly in disguise" has been openly mocked in sports media. It had not been a question of if he would come over or when, but openly remarked who cares. He had been displayed as a novelty, something to comment on briefly and forget. An opportunity for those to diminish his country's hockey culture, his friends, his family and the effort they put into the game he loved. It was understandable, those who come from a place of ignorance love to mock, but he was coming over to prove them wrong. While quiet, Ólafur was known as an inspirational leader back home leading by example and deflecting credit to his team whenever and wherever possible. He would often display dominance late in games to help bring about comebacks and shower his goalie and teammates with nothing but effusive praise. Well... effusive for him meaning three to four words. Will his arrival in the SMJHL bring about a radical influx of Icelandic talent as people consider it's viability as a legitimate hockey market? That seems unlikely, but to count out Atlason before he gets started seems unwise and is something this reporter won't be doing. His arrival shows him embracing his deep respect for the SHL as he came off the plane wearing a Derek Martin jersey from his Atom AAA days on the Ile de Gros Bois Croque Monsieurs. He was open about respecting his game, especially his prowess on the powerplay and how he hopes to emulate that piece of success. Gangi þér vel, Ólafur. “The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”

Kristian Seppanen was a trailblazer and I cannot believe he was not acknowledged in Atlason’s press conference, given the years of sage advice offered by Seppanen on balancing these leagues’ conflicting game schedules.

Atlason didn't hold a presser, just got off the plane. I'm sure Simppanen will be acknowledged soon “The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend.
