SHL logos from best to worst
#1
(This post was last modified: 08-23-2024, 04:03 PM by st4rface. Edited 1 time in total.)

So, I actually pretty recently made a media about SMJHL logos. I rated them from the best to the worst. I thought it was pretty cool to do and tried to do the same for SHL logos. It was much harder this time though, because in the making I understood that SHL has much bigger competition in every single aspect. Logos included! Some of these logos even changed their positions in the making of this article, so enjoy. It took some time.

Before we start though, I wanted to remind y'all that this is just a tier list made for fun, entertainment and simply because I need some SHL balance. I still can't draw a fucking straight line with a ruler and I know that I couldn't make anything even close to these logos. It's just about the taste. Yours might be completely different and that’s okay. Maybe this opinion even helps someone to make up new ideas and improve some logos, because why not? Enjoy!

1. New England ''Wolfpack'' - Wolfpack

It's hard to describe how I feel about this logo, but I can really appreciate it. If you take a look at all SHL logos, you can see that there aren't many who are giving you a 100% big safety feeling that it's actually a logo for a hockey team. This one is the one! Angry animal with a broken hockey stick in it's mouth. Good color shceme and has full a team name on it while looking actually professional. Everything in it is good and well thought about which just makes me to put it at number one.

2. Texas ''Renegades'' - Renegades

It took me a while to appreciate this logo as well. Some time ago I didn’t really like it, because I somehow didn’t understood the idea of it. Maybe that’s because I wasn’t even interested to think about it. Sometimes you gotta take a deeper look and throw away your quick emotions. I remember that once I heard an opinion about music albums. You can't say it's a bad album until you haven't listened to it at least seven times with pauses. Same thing applies here, because opinion might change with the time. You can't judge a logo if you haven't tried to take a different look at it multiple times. Logo might look simple, but it has some important details related to hockey. For example, once again it has some hockey sticks in the background. It has very simple color scheme with black, grey and white. Plus, it has a full team name on it. I think that these details are very important and it all together looks very solid. These top two logos I’ve mentioned already are looking like they might be used for some professional hockey teams in the world. They both doesn't have a specific shape and they are just unique in their own ways.

3. Calgary ''Dragons'' - Dragons

I think that ''Dragons'' have an amazing logo. They had to re-design their team, because their logo was very old and not so professional looking, if we are comparing it to the others. However, it was a franchise with a very long history who did it pretty well. They didn't lose their identity - they just improved it. Logo is sick. Dragon looks angry in it, giving a vibe of fighting. Full team name is in the logo as well. Red, grey and white color scheme fits for sure. The bad thing is that it might remind a bit of some sort of video game character. However, I still think that this is one of the coolest logos SHL have, if we put away thoughts about video game I just mentioned.

4. Chicago ''Syndicate'' - syndicate

I think it's all about the taste and many users might disagree with me and put this logo much lower, but I have always liked how this team looks on a paper. Extra points for such an original team name. I know that they have changed some details in their logo with some time, but in general it looks amazing. Interesting color scheme, original idea and just cool outcome. They found a way to put their full team name on it as well, which I think deserves some extra points. Something that you can’t see on a daily basis.

5. Edmonton ''Blizzard'' - Blizzard

Edmonton fits to many of previously mentioned criteria. Logo doesn't have hockey sticks or something, but it's original - starting from a team name, ending with the logo itself. It has blue, white and grey colors which immediately gives you a vibe of winter, snow and ice. Team name is in it as well. An excellent and modern logo for a hockey team for sure. Some junior squads around the world actually might use it. I think that this would be an amazing logo for some junior team in Europe. I feel like logo itself has a personality, which makes you like this logo even more. Well done!

6. Buffalo ''Stampede'' - Stampede

I don't know who made this logo, but I think that it's impressive that someone made an iconic logo with just two colors. That dude really said that he gonna use only green and yellow that day. Shape of a circle, great choice of a font. Pretty simple logo with no easter eggs, but I think that's perfect. Yes, this logo might be used for some type of meat in your local market, but I have always loved it. I specially enjoyed it when my previous player was playing for them, lol. However, a well deserved sixth place in my opinion.

7. Baltimore ''Platoon'' - Platoon

We move on to the seventh place. It was much harder to decide which logos to put next. I like that this logo looks very hungry. It looks like it belongs to a team which wants to win and succeed. I have always liked logos which has a shape of a circle, plus it looks very professional. The thing I don't like is that there are too many red color. Eyes, beak and even background. It all mixes together and gives me a weird feeling. It's a bit hard to understand logo itself, because it has four or even five colors - blue, white, grey and two types of red (I guess). My question is - which one is primary? Because it doesn't look like one color there is more than other. However, I still like it, because of how professional it looks. It might be a bit lower in this list, but at the same time - I have a feeling that this place is the right one for this team.

8. Toronto ''North Stars'' - Stars

Another team which has a circle type logo. This one was pretty hard to rate, because my player is on this team. However, I tried to be as objective as I could. To be honest - I think that it might be even higher. I think that it has great details. It looks like a simple logo with a tower, but we all know that this tower is related to Toronto. Team name is cool as well, since Toronto is in the North and it's ''North Stars''. Letter T in the middle of the tower looks awesome too. Small triangles at left, right, up and down which makes it look like a compass is incredibly original once again. Unique logo itself and I think it's a great idea which worked out perfectly. I just miss team name on it. However, I still really like it. I'm happy that my player now plays for this team, because front office, teammates and logo are all amazing (please, give me more minutes, thanks). Great choice of colors too. Made it look easy. And yes, I will stop glazing now.

9. Los Angeles ''Panthers'' - Panthers

I think that this is the first team on the list which reminds me of an already active professional sports team. And it's not great that it's in hockey as well. Team name gives a vibe of a mix of Los Angeles ''Kings'' and Florida ''Panthers''. However, the logo is decent. Buildings of the city in the background gives a vibe of Minnesota ''Wild'' where they have trees in the background of their logo (if I remember correctly). That little star which works like an eye of panther is cool. Interesting choice of colors which I actually think that looks good together. However, I think that this is one of those logos which screams for a team name in it. Great font and right place for it and this logo would be rated much higher. Still solid though and definitely better than average. I think I said it in my previous rankings too, but I don't like that Latvian hockey simulation project some years ago had a similar logo to this. If I remember right, there was a discussion that the idea was taken from ''Panthers'' logo. Don't know if it was known for both sides, but yeah. I will add it below. Unfortunately, couldn't find better file for that logo.

10. Atlanta ''Inferno'' - Inferno

This logo has never been my favorite, but this was the time when I really tried to be as objective as I can. I think that this is very unique idea. Great choice of a city, original team name and previously unseen logo. It leaves you with a feeling that you can fantasize in your head how the bird looks and if there is any hidden details. It might not be my favorite, but I can appreciate a good art and somehow relate it to hockey. However, for people who likes to play video games it might be hard to relate it to hockey. It mostly reminds me a CS:GO map Inferno. It doesn't change the fact that their logo is decent though.

11. Winnipeg ''Aurora'' - Aurora

The previous logo of ''Aurora'' was my favorite, but I think that this one is just okay as well. I like how all the colors goes together. Little bear looks good and I like those stars there as well. Astrology isn't my thing, but are those stars meant to make Ursa Major? And is those northern lights in the background? This logo had me thinking a lot and I can't say if it's simple or very detailed. However, it's okay and that's the most important part.

12. New Orleans ''Specters'' - Specters

"Specters" did something risky which I personally think was worth it and worked out. They chose a very bright and "loud" color as their primary one and I think it worked out pretty well. They made a creepy, suspicious and unknown character as their logo. Team name without the city is in it too. Outcome is pretty cool, not gonna lie. It's simple and mysterious which is like a cherry on a top. That specific color gives a lot of varieties to play on signatures. I like it and I think it's okay!

13. Montreal ''Patriotes'' - Patriotes

This logo and branding itself has grew on me with some time. I never liked "Patriotes" and how they look. It would've been much lower some time ago, but I like it a bit more now. Now I can really appreciate the branding, work and the effort. I think that logo has a different shape than others. That badass Sherlock Holmes type guy smoking looks cool as well. It gives a feeling that team just doesn't care and they are sick. Maple leaf below symbolizes Canada and that's cool as well. It has a meaning and looks pretty cool, so it can't be lower. This is pretty much the last one that I actually kind of liked in this list.

14. Manhattan ''Rage'' - Rage

"Rage" is another team with a rich history, but I have never liked this logo. Don't get me wrong - it's still professional. It has a letter M hidden in it which symbolizes Manhattan. Big building has a meaning too, but I think that the bull itself has been overused so much in any sports or projects. It brings a feeling of Chicago "Bulls" rip-off, plus as I said - I have seen plenty other professional teams who have used bull as their thing. One is added below - it's a professional floorball (something similar to hockey, but without the ice, skates and the puck) team in Latvia. Of course, they all look a bit different, but it really isn't anything original. However, I like that they are "Rage", not "Bulls". At least some type of creativity which I respect.

15. Philadelphia ''Forge'' - Forge

I am not a big fan of this logo, because I think it's pretty empty and doesn't have a personality. Long story short - something is missing and I can't say what exactly. I understand the "Forge" thing and I can appreciate those couple of details. Shape is pretty rare too and colors fit well, but I just can't put this logo any higher, knowing that there are many better. I think that those above are just better. However, it all can change with some time. Right now this is a perfect place for this logo, I think.

16. San Francisco ''Pride'' - pride

I have said before that this logo reminds me of some other professional teams as well. However, I don't think that it's bad. I just think that it all mixes together with so few colors. It's kind of messy. I think that team name on it would fit pretty good and if that wouldn't be missing, it would be easy above the average. Now I can't enjoy it fully. It doesn't bring any affection or aura, if you understand my point. It is kinda empty, but could have been looking much better. Plus, it reminds me once again of one junior hockey team in Latvia. I will put the logo I'm talking about once again a bit lower. However, that's not the main thing. Something is missing, plus I can't understand their full story. Gotta find their first post, so I understand what's the meaning of it all.

17. Tampa Bay ''Barracuda'' - Barracuda

This one always brings me some type of mixed feelings, because I can't understand if it's good or not. I have said before that I liked their previous branding much more. I think that was one of my all time favorites. However, I can respect this one too. I know that they wanted to go for something original and they kind of did. Bright blue and pink colors are giving that vice city feeling. However, I don't know if I like it. It all together looks a bit weird. Barracuda looks more like pike with a broken jaw. Choice of the color for that fish is questionable too. Are fish really bright pink? Still can't decide if it's a good logo or not, but I can't find a way to put it higher than this.

18. Hamilton ''Steelhawks'' - Steelhawks

Legendary franchise with a historical logo. Here since the first season and been through some re-branding phases. This logo is here already some time and I think a lot of us have been okay with it. However, the thing is that I like the logo they have on their alternate jerseys in their team info post more than their primary one. I think that logo don't have any specific colors which are bringing attention to it. It all looks grey and a bit boring. Hawk in it doesn't seem the angriest too. It's not my favorite for sure. I think that there are a lot of ways how to improve it, so it’s more personal for all players playing for them.

19. Seattle ''Argonauts'' - Argonauts

I said it in SMJHL article and I will say it again. I don't like those hockey team logos which has ships or boats in them. I can't find a way how to make it related to hockey. I don't understand what type of eye is that as well. I have never liked it and I don't see that changing. The thing I can respect though is that they haven't changed anything since the time they joined in S56, if I am right. They have always stayed with the same logo and the idea no matter what, trying to build a legacy. Team name is kind of original and I like that it's mentioned in the logo, but I still don't like it and I don't think it's better than above.

20. Minnesota ''Monarchs'' - Monarchs

I tried to find their re-branding post, but I couldn't, so I have some questions. Are they meant to be monarchs, monarch butterflies or both, because it all has a double meaning? However, I think their re-branding was bad. Yes, their previous logo had a cartoon vibe and was kind of foolish, but it was cool, kind of badass and original. What is this now? A scout badge which proves that you have caught enough butterflies in the lunch time of your primary school? I don't know. Like, it's not that bad, but I think that it's not an improvement from the previous one. It looks like a random clan logo on any random mobile phone game. I like the little crown in it, but I don't know what was the idea and how it's somehow related to a hockey team. I'll put the real monarch below.

Long story short, I would say that the first and second logos are the best ones. They would be in S tier. Third to sixth in my opinion are A tier, but seventh to 13th are MID tier which would be like a B. 14th to 17th are not good and I would give them a C tier while 18th to 20th are the lowest tier. That's how I look at it.

That's it for this time. I remind y'all that this is just my personal opinion and I couldn't make anything better. This is just how I feel about all SHL logos. I wish y'all a great season and most importantly a good luck in your personal lifes. Cheers!

Oh. Actually didn't saw it! That's so cool. If I would've actually seen it earlier, it would've been higher. Thank you for mentioning that. Crazy that I didn't see it. Smile

It used to be a common thing for a new SFP player to question why there was a heart emoji named "tongue" in the discord haha

Haha. Never questioned it though. Looks cool and actually fits well with the team name.

this is why Manhattan uses the Bull imagery. "Charging Bull is a popular tourist destination that draws thousands of people a day, symbolizing Wall Street and the Financial District."

That's very cool to know, because I didn't have a clue as a non-American. I still think that bull is overused in sports, but this one at least makes it relevant to the city.
