S79 SMJHL PT #4 - MVP Due: Sunday, November 10th @ 11:59 PM PST
#16

This is going to be a really long shot for MVP. I know usually you become MVP by scoring the most points or the most goals and stuff like this. But have a look at the rosters of Maine and Quebec: There are a lot of high scoring players and if you remove one of them there would probably be another who moves up the lineup and would score almost as much. So i want to look at a player who simply cannot be replaced because the value within the is too high. But first i want to throw out an honorable mention: Those players are not my MVP because it's a group of players and not a sigle one: The S80 rookie class of the Carolina Kraken: The three forwards: Kim Chaewon, Greyson Willis and Goosetavo have scored acombined 62 goals and 108 assists in 57 games so far. The two Defensmen: Carter Rumsy and Carter st. Pierre a logging 21:30 min every night and if you look at ther GA/TA ratio they are probably the most stable pairing of the entire league. Meanwhile rookie goalie: Doplh is leading the league in Wins. They are the sole reason why the Kraken are sitting at #2 in the standings right now. The could probably replace the people ahead of them in the lineup if there are any but they themselves are irreplaceble.

But now to my suggestion for the league MVP. There is exactly one player in this league from who everyone expects to do the impossible each and everynight. One player who is facing unspeakable horrors every time he takes the ice. One player who despite everything has not yet given up or quit: I'm talking about the goalie of the Vancouver Whalers: Trent Mackenzie. Vancouver is allowing 50 shots on goals per game on average! Some nights Mackenzie has to face 70 to 80 shots on the Vancouver net. In theri last win Mackenzie had a 61 saves performance. In 50 games this season Mackenzie made 1805 saves already. That is almost 500 saves or 31 % more than the next goalie who is sitting at #2. But Mackenzie is still here: Not quitting not complaining, despite being hammered with shots on goal every time he steps on the ice, without any attemps of defense by the team infront of him. This is a true MVP. Nobody else would be willing to suffer as much over such a long period of time.

Cristoforo Roccamontepiano
Cristoforo is a strong front runner he is leading the league in points (as of the time I am typing this out) as well as one one of the smaller players in league he still have 33 blocks and 118 hits for physical capabilities he is great on the faceoff dot as he on average winning 51% of faceoffs and has one of the best defensive rating for a forward

Jacppo Nummilavin
One of the best offence defenseman in the league he is leading all defenseman in the league in points but that does not mean he has compromised his actual defensive ability is among the best in the league and should be a considered a strong candidate for MVP

Doug Weight
Doug is one of the best two way players in the league and one the best people when it comes to faceoff dot with a 61% on the dot meaning when your team needs a faceoff win the most Doug Weight is most likely getting the job done that his huge for a team that they have a player that they can rely on that for. Doug also leads the league in assists which showcases his skill in the o-zone

The Ideen Fallah Trophy is one of the most sought-after prizes in hockey and certainly of the SMJHL.  Many young players dream of lifting it over their heads as repayment for the blood and sweat they have put into playing for their teams throughout the season.  With the season drawing to a close there are some questions around who will win the prestigious award this year.  Below are the top two choices according to a recent poll of fans, players, and managers.

Cristoforo Roccamontepiano is currently the front runner.  It is hard to imagine having a better season than this player.  They lead the league with 114 points and are second in goals with 50 and second in assists with 64.  They have been absolutely dominant offensively, and lead the league in power play goals.

Berserkers goalie Katharina Rosenthal makes a case for being an MVP candidate because they are having a great year in the net.  A great goalie can really put a team over the top and Katharina has been consistent throughout the season 79 campaign.  Currently Katherina is second in wins, first lowest goals against average, third in goals saved above average, tenth in saves, third in save percentage, and ninth in games played.  Not to mention the staggering 4 shutouts.  The Newfoundland team is having a great year and Katherina is certainly a huge part of that success.

Throughout the season there had been a clear MVP, none other than Cristoforo Roccamontepiano (Quebec City

Citadelles). Citadelles

50 Goals
24 Power play goals
64 Assists
114 Total Points
294 Shots

These are impressive numbers, and looked like a clear winner by the halfway point of the season.

But slowly a few other candidates crept up on him, specifically three Maine Timber players.  Timber

Look no further than Doug Weight taking the lead with 78 Assists, or current lead goal scorer Valtteri Pulkkinen with 54 goals.

But you simply can not ignore May O'Nayse who leads the league with shots by a BIG margin, 384 vs second place (who is Pulkkinen) at 330.
But he is no slouch on the other stats either! He is top 3 in goals and top 4 in assists.

The Maine Timber players take up spots 2-4 on total points, 108 107 108 respectively, trying to overtake Roccamontepiano at 114.

With only a few games left of the season, will an upset happen or will Cristoforo Roccamontepiano keep his lead?

I think that the MVP of the regular season will definitely be one of the most productive players of the season. There is one clear leader so far, but there are three followers who can catch up to the leader. The leader is the leader of the Quebec team, which has managed to accumulate a rich harvest of points, and the closest followers are the three Maine representatives. The way these hockey players play is commendable, because as far as I have played with them, their games are always very difficult, and it is difficult for me as a defensive player to stop them. I think every defensive player in the entire league feels the same way. Each of the TOP10 players in the league deserves to be at the very top and win the MVP status. Then we will see how the fight for this trophy will turn out in the remaining games.

Here are my picks for the MVP trophy:
Cristoforo Roccamontepiano
Doug Weight
May O'Nayse
Valtteri Pulkkinen

There are a few fairly obvious contenders for league MVP this season. First are Chris Valentine and Logan Webb. They are first and second in the league in both goals and total points, with the only difference being a single goal more from Valentine. Also deserving of a mention is Toasty, who had an amazing 73 points this season as a defenceman, 15 more than the next closest defender. But more impressive and my personal pick for MVP is goaltender Justin Time. With a record of 45-8-1 Time leads the league in wins by a considerable amount, a full seven wins ahead of second place. He also leads the league in shutouts with seven. But it's not just the team around him carrying him to those wins. Time is 3rd in the league in save percentage among team's number 1 starters, and also 3rd in the league in goals saved above expected with a whopping 20.

Take 2, this time using the proper league

While Valtteri Pulkkinen leads the league and goals and Dough Weight leads the league in assists, and both should absolutely be considered MVP candidates, the favourite for me is Cristoforo Roccamontepiano. The league leader in points by an impressive 118, a full sox ahead of second place, Roccamontepiano finds himself second in the league in both goals and assists. He also has a better shooting percentage than Pulkkinen, with an even 17 per cent to Pulkkinen's 16.3. Now you might say to this "well Zach, Roccamontepiano has 10 more powerplay goals than Pulkkinen. Scoring at even strength is harder and more valuable." To this I'd say that a goal is a goal and having a lethal powerplay is incredibly valuable. Being able to punish teams for their infractions is almost more valuable because it forces teams to change the way they play in order to not take penalties.

I would also like to give a special shoutout to Kiwi Soderberg-Snooks, who won't win MVP or even be in the conversation, but deserves recognition for his five fight wins. Everyone else in the league combined only has eight. That's absurd. In a way he's absolutely the MVP. Just instead of most valuable player he's most valuable puncher.

Objectively speaking, I think Valtteri Pulkkinen will be named MVP of this season. He's been way too impressing so far and I dont see someone getting even close to him in that MVP race.

We could maybe make an argument for Christoforo Roccamontepiano. So far with the Québec City Citadelles, he got 56assists (1) and 45 goals (2) for a total of 101 points (2), and the season is not even finished ! But with Pulkkinen getting more goals and points, I think Roccamontepiano is going to finish 2nd in this race.

Born in Helsinki ??, Pulkkinen got drafted in the second round ( 30 ) in the '77 SMJHL Draft by his current team, the Maine Timber. After putting an impressive 17 goals and 26 assists for 43 points in a full season ( 66 games ), he got drafted 17 overall by the Tampa Bay Barracuda of the SHL ! His performance kept on getting better since then, and this season really proves to us that he's ready for the SHL as soon as next year ! I also think he will win a LOT of awards this season such as the best goal scorer in the SMJHL, the most points this season by a SMJHL player and obviously, the MVP.

The three players that stand out to me as the most hard working and valuable players to their respective teams are, Cristoforo Roccamontepiano, Doug Weight, and Valtteri Pulkkinen. These three players have shown that they are stars on their team and always leading. Pulkkinen lead the league in goals and was top three in point totals, and he did so mostly in five on five play. He tallied thirty-eight goals while even strength and thirty-six even strength assists, he has shown he knows how to get the puck in the back of the net whether it is on his stick or a teammates. For Doug Weight he has shined in all areas of his game and knows how to get the puck on his stick, getting fifty-five takeaways and seventy-nine this season he showed he can take the puck and turn it into a great play for his team. He was also very good at the dot with a solid win percentage of sixty-one. Cristoforo Roccamontepiano showed he had an excellent power play game, leading the league by a wide margin with twenty-five power play goals, this leads the next best by nine goals. Roccamontepiano also got his team goals during even strength with forty-four even strength assists showing he can help his team both at even strength and a man advantage.

Cristoforo Roccamontepiano deserves the MVP title due to his remarkable offensive contributions and overall impact on the game. With an impressive total of 42 goals, he ranks third in the league, demonstrating his scoring prowess. His 53 assists further solidify his standing, placing him again third in this critical category. Together, these achievements culminate in a remarkable 95 points, earning him the second position in overall scoring.

Roccamontepiano's efficiency is exemplified by his 17 power-play goals, leading the entire league and showcasing his ability to perform under pressure during pivotal moments. Additionally, his +37 plus-minus rating indicates a strong two-way performance, reflecting not only his offensive talent but also his defensive contributions to the team's success.

Cristoforo’s ability to elevate his team's performance, along with his individual accolades, solidifies his status as a key asset. His combination of scoring, playmaking, and defensive acumen makes him a compelling candidate for the MVP award in this league.

If for some god forbidden reason that didn't convince you, I would suggest looking into Doug Weight or Valtteri Pulkkinen. Both deserve their own respective write ups. Do your research!

Right off the bat, a couple of players come to mind regarding the Ideen Fallah Award for League MVP. The first one that comes to mind is Cristoforo Roccamontepiano who finished the season with 118 points in 66 games, that's 52 goals and 66 assists. He was second in the league for goals and second in the league for assists but was first in the league for points. This is a very dominant season and he was very important for his team, he was a big play driver on the offense side, however for Maine three players come to mind who produced well for the team this season, first would be Valtteri Pulkkinen, who scored and led the league with 55 goals he was 10 in assists at 54 and finish these with 109 points which were third best in the league second best in the league in Maine was Doug Weight 109 points 79 assists 30 goals and May O'Nayse at 112 points 62 assists 50 goals that main line has been very good however you know when it comes to who is the MVP somebody that the team relies on you cannot get any better than Cristoforo Roccamontepiano because without him he that was entire life is probably doing a lot worse.

Starting with a goalie we need to talk about Elvar Gil-Galad. He is built for playoffs this year. Near the top of the list in games played, minutes played, shots against, and only one OT loss. He has seen it all this season. This is the goalie to watch in playoffs.

Next we have Argenti Gorilla. He is ranked second in the league for shots blocked. He ranks 10th for goals among defenseman 4th in assists, 5th in points, and 7th in powerplay goals. There is no stopping this guy. Absolute Animal.

Last and certainly not least I present Jackass Pants. He is ranked 3rd in the league for powerplay goals with 15. Adding four game winning goals and his position in the shootout means he is the ultimate clutch player. The Grizzlies were the only flawless team in shootouts this regular season. Just like Elvar, Jackass will be a sight to see in playoffs this year.

Can you smell it? Playoffs are here and it smells like endless powerplay!

There are 4 clear candidates for me that can win this MVP award. Each person provides something unique to their team. My shortlist of 4 players are Valtteri Pulkkinen, May O'Nayse, Doug Weight, and Cristoforo Roccamontepiano. These 4 players are spread between 2 teams; Maine and Quebec. These were the two most dominant teams of the league so it makes sense the MVP will likely go to one of them.

Valtteri was the top goal scorer of the season and placed #3 in total points. They are one of the key players on Maine. For many, this top goal scorer is the favourite to win it all.

Next up we have May. He placed #3 in goals, #2 in points and was #1 in shots leading by almost 60 over #2. May is a player who generated offense at an alarmingly high rate, they were just inefficient (or unlucky) with their shots. He is another key player to Maine's offensive prowess.

Maine's third player I want to highlight is Doug. While Doug wasn't known for scoring goals, he was an incredibly good passer and lead the league in assists with 79. He is likely one of the key reasons the other 2 people on this list were able to score and put up so many shots. Doug is absolutely vital for Maine's offense to run smoothly.

Finally, we have Cristoforo, Quebec's star player. He was #2 in goals, #2 in assists, #1 in points, was more efficient in their shots than the other 2 goal scorers on this list and most importantly: he lead the league in power play goals with 25 and he had 9 more than #2. He is clinical. Without Cristoforo, Quebec simply wouldn't be the best team. He is the best player on the best team, therefore he should win the MVP award.
