I join this job to make it fun for everyone and i feel like i havent done my job so here we are!

What do you make IIHF more fun for you? what would you change?

I will be taking the ideas you guys give to HO for us to discuss in the near future and i hope that this will make the whole experience more fun!

IIHF has always been under-promoted, despite happening during the off-season when nothing else is going on. We already have ASW and CW, maybe have IIHF Week? Not sure how to implement it without throwing more TPE at the problem, but the overall idea here is to increase visibility.

IIHF HO is a hard job, thank you for taking the time to reach out and check on the community about it.

With that being said, give Czechia a cup. thanks.

But seriously: There is a gap between IIHF and WJC that a lot of players fall in, and I think that hurts the interest. I don't have a solution, outside of trying to get a 3rd sort of "All Star" game series or something, but the gap causes a lot of disinterest in the IIHF I think. Like a new player today who creates can do WJC for upto 4 (or 5) seasons, but then they are too low on the TPE chain to make it to the IIHF, too old for the WJC, and are basically sidelined. Idk, I don't have a real solution, but I wanted to point out the problem.

I think it would be cool if folks could more openly transfer in and out of federations instead of being locked in one place for their entire career. Could be fun and allow for more interesting storylines to develop.

People who put their players in Quebec actually sign up for the Quebec IIHF.

COME ON! IT IS RIGHT THERE! Wait, that's more of a Pet-peeve.

More serious: I think some people have pointed out a major size difference between Federations. It is basically Canada and the US being large enough to field multiple teams with spares on their own.

Then you have Finland, Sweden generally good sized, then the rest have some variance in how much they struggle. As a new user who did some research-

Then waited several years

Then remembered this place existed, caved, looked in again, things can be a little intimidating in regards to the sign up that what nation they pick can be an afterthought for some people. Relaxing the rules on transfers in a way can off-set that. Someone picks their player from their hometown in Canada/US, and by the time they think "Maybe I should change" it could be a little too late.

Second, to maybe help different Federations to have a chance to build connections and grow, maybe create a space where people who are unsure of a Federation to join, whether a recreate who isn't tied down thinking about going to a new Federation for a new experience, or a new user unsure where to place their player, can go and people are able to answer their questions and give them options. There should be some do's and don'ts, maybe have only a select number of people there, but I also argue in the case of a person without a IIHF Fed, they don't have the "commitment" of someone who has already selected one or of an SMJHL/SHL Player who has their team. So it isn't as outrageous to go "Oh, you're a left wing sniper? I know my [Fed here] doesn't have one yet. So that's an option for you." or to answer questions. That way also if someone has a question in Discord, we can go "Hey, if you're looking for a team, this thread/discord/whatever is a good place to start and people will help you find a home."

In the end the WJ and IIHF is a fun thing. It's nice you guys created this thread and are looking at ways to improve. You are less corrupt than most real life international sporting orgs. <3

Change the playoff format to be like the actual IIHF.

Have national teams be nations.

I don't know if or what you want to do about it but so many first gens blindly  create their player for USA or Canada without knowing how long the wait list is for them. Of course most go IA anyway, but maybe explain it better to rookies what it actually means and that it can matter a lot where your player is from. Or if they don't want to decide yet that they have to pick some other nation outside our IIHF teams so they can be transferred in later.

I think it could help to put an info text on the player creation form that says something along the lines of:

"Please note that the national team waitlists for USA and Canada are very long. Feel free to create a player from these nations, but we'd like to encourage new players to create players from all over the world. Don't worry, you get one free transfer during your career too!"

I think rather than putting USA and Canada at a disadvantage the rest of us don’t have to deal with, maybe it might be better to just present the data on active players somewhere upfront? Canada and the US do get a lot of the natural creates but so many of those often go IA and it seems unfair to them to be openly encouraging people to create from somewhere else Lee the second they set foot on the site. I think maybe it’d be better to just have a clear picture of the active player levels at each position for each nation somewhere new players can see.

What about creating a budget for poverty nations to pay players to transfer to their nation? Have an annual transfer portal where players can only transfer once every three seasons or something. That way users that aren’t max earners and could use some extra SHL bucks could transfer to Germany or whatever from USA or Canada if they are going to be left off their nations roster anyway. Those poverty nations will be able to boost their ranks with mid tier type earners to at least be more competitive.

That would be fine for me as long as it's explained what the active numbers mean (WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN MASON???) as in, it means you might not play for your national team for a while. Pair that with a short introduction on the IIHF.

Without context people will just be like "yeah I mean most users are probably American or Canadian, what gives? It's not a problem for me, right?"

Also I respectfully disagree about USA/Canda for being at a disadvantage with this. Other nations also get IA's and Canada in particular was so overcorwded that they got a Quebec IIHF team, instead of including another nation.

1. Make every player an IIHF Free Agent when they create, or rather than selecting birthplace, make it a dropdown box which allows users to select their IIHF federation. When I created, I wasn’t aware that me putting a random birthplace tied me to a specific federation, because I wasn’t aware there even was IIHF in this fictional game world; but even then, how am I supposed to know what federations even exist? Intuitively, even if I assumed there was IIHF and implications based on my birthplace, I wouldn’t assume that Québec had its own federation while Russia doesn’t, or that Ireland or Japan had federations at all because they’re ranked so incredibly low IRL relative to numerous feds that lack teams.

2. Create an IIHF Guide and, yes I’m saying it, assign 1/2 TPE for users who answer questions right on a quiz about it - available once per user across all user players, just like Deep Dives. Or a cash incentive. I don’t understand how the transfer portal works. I don’t understand if I’m allowed to transfer, but maybe I’d have considered it if I was allowed when Seppanen was forced to play as a bottom line forward for Finland (probably not but). Or players who got cut from their national team due to the Norden amalgamation may have reconsidered their Fed.
