S80 SMJHL PT #4 - MVP Due: Sunday, January 12th @ 11:59 PM PST
#16

Sometimes, it's hard to tell what the Awards Committee is thinking. The fact that there isn't any official standard/basic criteria for some awards leaves it completely open to individual interpretation which can be frustrating. Others seem to think awards are nothing but a popularity contest. Regardless of your beliefs on the matter, when it comes to the Ideen Fallah Trophy (SMJHL MVP), the committee's job has been pretty easy recently.

The MVP is typically the player that finishes the regular season with the most points. There may be some other factors thrown in there when the points race is close, but that hasn't been the case. Since S75, the points leader has had no less than six points separating them from 2nd place (S77).

In S80, the race for MVP is cut and dry once again. Despite being on a completely stacked Quebec City Citadelles team, Cristoforo Roccamontepiano's whopping 19 point edge over 2nd place Valtteri Pulkkinen leaves no question as to who was the most valuable player. The S80 Ideen Fallah Trophy winner is Cristoforo Roccamontepiano.

The season is over and the points are tallied for all of our players down here in the junior league. The leading scorer for season 80 is none other than Cristoforo Roccamontepiano and barring something really screwy happening in the awards committee then they are a shoe in for most valuable player of the season. At 123 points they had 19 more points than the next player on the list. Dominant in the power play as well as even strength, positive face off win percentage, and 8 game winning goals. This makes them a force of nature that could be seen all over the ice. While they had players on their team who were better at scoring at even strength, games are made or broken in special teams and an otherwise even game and be blown open with a power play goals. This is also what differentiates the good teams from the bad. So that wraps up my vote for MVP and may it be me next season.

For me I think the front runner, straight up, for the MVP is easily Jeff Kirkstone III. He's second I the league in wins with thirty one, and leads the league with an insane 8 shutouts in 57 appearances on the ice. While the Highlanders have definitely had an up and down season as a team, finishing sixth overall and third in their conference, and seeing Kirkstone was 31-23-1 overall in those outings, I truly believe that he is a big reason why the Ottawa team is still in the hunt currently.

Kirkstone III faced the fifth most shots in the league at 1499, and while his GAA (3.24) was less than stellar and his save % was sub 90% (0.895) I believe he is a huge reason why the Highlanders remain a threat going into the playoffs. Without him m on the roster, the team coul easily have finished in the bottom 5-6 teams in the entire league instead of sixth overall. The choice is obvious and clean. Jeff Kirkstone III for MVP!

I feel like I shouldn’t really weigh in on this one seriously because as a member of the j awards committee this late in the season that feels like leaking awards discussions. So instead I am going to talk about some of the criteria that I use when I’m looking for these awards. For me, most valuable player has to be someone who was not only valuable in a league context, but also specifically on their team. Points are good, but I hate it when this award gets boiled down to “who score most that guy wins it.” While points are good, keeping the other team from scoring points is also important. Furthermore, if player A has 30 more points than anyone else on their team, and player B has 10 more points than player A but there are two other people on team B with almost as many points, player A is gonna get my vote. If I can’t even say for sure you’re the most valuable person on your TEAM, I’m certainly not saying you’re the most valuable player in the whole league

The clear and only choice for MVP is Oceane Söderberg-Tremblay. Now, one might assume I made this decision due to bias... After all, Oceane Söderberg-Tremblay is my partner in anchoring the defense of our team, the Yukon Malemutes, but that wouldn't be accurate. One might also assume it's because Oceane Söderberg-Tremblay is the only player who has a name that I'm confident in my knowledge of... That would be correct. And thus I present this acrostic:
O is for over the top, a fun WWI phrase for a not fun thing
C is for corgi! An adorable kind of dog
E is for Evanescence, who perform  Oceane's favorite song Bring Me To Life
A is for articulation, which is something Oceane's action figure has in the joints
N is for Nun, Oceane's backup career
E is for end of the world as we know it. Which it is (if we ignore the missing it's) and Oceane feels fine

Well lets think here who might be the Most valuable player in all of the Simulation Major Junmior Hockey League? i think that would have to be Tom O'Donnell winger for the Thunder Bay Walleye. This kid ist fast, thick, cool, smells good, lives in a house. He scored 10 goals this season and like 9 of them were in the first 5 games I think. He is by far the player you want to build around and keep for the rest of his career let alone this one season where he hard carried. Might I also say he had 20 even strength points? Uhhh ya think. This kid does it all when the going gets tough. Vote him for most valuable and you better believe you will not come out looking silly. He is also quite the stalwart skating back, stealing the puck and going forward for a change. I am campaiging for him to win MVP and there is nothing that will stop him

Offensive MVP, S80 - Cristoforo Roccamontepiano, Quebec City Citadelles

A pick that surprises no one. Roccamontepiano has had an amazing season, start to finish. With a career high 123 points, a stellar 45 +/-, and an outstanding 76 Offensive Game Rating, Roccamontepiano's value to his team cannot be overstated. He's raked in 24 points more than the Citadelles' next highest points player, and it's hard to imagine where the team would be without him setting the pace.

Defensive MVP, S80 - Dieter Fruhstuck, Anchorage Armada

My defensive pick for the season goes to Dieter Fruhstuck out of Anchorage. He's got an incredible  287 blocked shots (making him a favorite of any goalie!), clocks in some respectable numbers when his team's shorthanded, and has a league-highest 84 for Defensive Game Rating. This d-man's an obvious asset to his team, and it'll be interesting to see where he ends up next season.

Goaltender MVP, S80 - Trent Mackenzie, Vancouver Whalers

This was a tough one. There's two goalies, in my mind, who've really stood out from the pack this season. And don't get me wrong - they've both done an amazing job. However, when you break it down by number of saves compared to shots against? There's no question that Trent Mackenzie takes it. He's faced an alarming 2161 shots this season and managed to save an astounding 1954 of them for a .904%. That amount of hustle and spirit means he's well deserving of a tendie MVP callout in my eyes.

The clear MVP this season is Quebec Center Christoforo Roccamontepiano. They finished with a whopping 123 points, leading the league with 77 assists. The next closest points leaders were ValterribPulkinen and Jason Bourne. While they each notched a few more goals, both were 20 points away from Roccamontepiano’s total.

Their MVP campaign grows even stronger when you consider that Quebec dominated the SMJHL this season. Only losing 13 games total, Quebec will make a push for the championship largely due to Roccamontepianos leadership and level of play.

Besides just piling on points, Christoforo has been efficient and defensive minded. They finished 7th and 9th among forwards for Shot Percentage and plus minus, respectively.

An MVP case could be made for other Quebec stars such as Duke Howard, but ultimately Roccamontepianos facilitating of the puck has been the driving force for the Citadelles success.  That’s why my MVP vote for this season would be for Christoforo Roccamontepiano.

In this small text, i'll talk about my main two contenders for the MVP award this season!

To start of lets talk about Christoforo Roccamontepiano! The 6ft 158lbs Quebec city Citadelles centerman is comming of an impressive 123 points season !(46 goals,77 assists)It is important to note that he leads the league in points and assists! Roccamontepiano is an absolute offensive dynamo that is truely a generational type of player. He is very important to this QCC team for the upcomming playoffs too! This is his last year in the SMJHL and he certainly wont be forgotten!

The second player I want to talk about is Jason Bourne! The 5ft 11 IN left winger has put up 103 points and is leading his team in points in his last season in the SMJHL!(56 goals,47 assists! career high!) Bourne is an elite sniper that was a key contributor of Newfoundland's insane 104 points season (50-12-4)

Now that I've talked about my clear possible winners, it is time to name who I think will win! So, in my opinion Christoforo Roccamontepiano will win the MVP award as he got an historic season as a player and really helped his team on many aspects with his insane well rounded game and his point production !

There is no doubt in Ryan's mind that Cristoforo Roccamontepiano is the unquestioned MVP of the SMJHL in Season 81. An unbelievable competitor with an unquestioned work ethic and a drive to be the best, Cristoforo scores naturally as he always finds himself in the dangerous areas, willing to do whatever it takes to get a play together that results in a puck in your net. It is lucky, perhaps, that such a dominant MVP is doing this at a point when his callup to the SHL is all but guaranteed. He is the kind of opponent Ryan wants nothing to do with as he moves forward in his SMJHL career. Oh, if only goalies could put up stats like that on their end, we might give those skaters something to sweat about in that MVP race. Time will tell what opportunities arise for the goaltenders, who are tired of being victims of recipients of hardware.

Looking across the league, there are some clear leaders in the various categories that make hockey players great. We're talking shutouts, goals, points, wins, all of the good stuff that really makes the Awards Committee turn their heads and makes fans go wild.

At the top of my list is none other than Cristoforo Roccamontepiano. This key player on Quebec City is at the top of the charts in multiple categories. Assists, points, powerplay goals, you know he set off at the start of season 80 making sure he was bringin his A-game to team-QC!

Another interesting name that you can't stop hearing about is the powerhouse, Jason Bourne. He's Newfoundland's top goal scorer and also claims the league title up to this point in the season. Not only that, he's the leader in another quintessential offensive categories at this point in the season, shots. Who wouldn't want the most productive offensive skater on their team? At that rate, this MVP conversation continues to heat up.

Now, I would be doing us all a disservice if I didn't also bring an essential defensive piece into the conversation, with Honza Havren of the Carolina Kraken. Honza's building quite the resume on the season. Top 5 in wins, leading in Goals Against Average, Top 5 in Goals Saved Above Average, Save %, and Shutouts. Double-H is playing hero this season with stats like that, but you have to also like the heart and respect he enjoys from fans and teammates alike.

The Awards Committee has a difficult road ahead, but the more interesting and difficult road remains for the players as they round out the season. Stats will change, but the team that puts together a long playoff run can set a legacy that will live on forever. Who will rise to the top?

Cristoforo Roccamontepiano seems to be running away with the Ideen Fallah MVP trophy. Cristoforo has many things going for him, the most eye-catching one is the fact that he leads the SMJHL in points. With a staggering 123 points, he has solidified himself as #3 in the SMJHL record books, for most points in a season. Funnily enough, he also holds the #4 spot from last season's performance! Cristoforo has been lighting up the scoresheet, and it's not like he's awful defensively. He backs up his points with an impressive plus/minus, as well as more takeaways than giveaways. Many will be shocked if he doesn't win the MVP award.

The only players who remotely have a case against Cristoforo, are Kim Chaewon and Ty Justice. Kim Chaewon is a second-year player who has led the Carolina Kraken to impressive results. One argument you can make against Cristoforo is team strength. QCC is arguably the best team in the league, so naturally Cristoforo will be playing with higher-caliber players. Chaewon is the only Carolina player in the top 10 charts offensively. Defensively, you have to consider Ty Justice's remarkable performances. He plays for Maine, who are lower than both QCC and CAR in the standings. Therefore, the team-strength argument also applies to him. He should also get a bonus for managing to put up 71 points as a defenseman! And even more remarkable is the fact that he has 17 giveaways, and 100 takeaways! He is hands down the best defensive player in the league. Should the award voters value defense, he has a legitimate chance of winning it.

The current leaders for MVP in my opinion are clearly

Goaltender Katharina Rosenthal for the Newfoundland Berserkers leading in most categories or second place in GAA with an insane amount of Goals saved above average, keeping his team in the game with most wins of any other goalie, the Berserkers wouldn't be in the same place in standings without them

And the other player I see as league MVP is
Cristoforo Roccamontepiano center of the Quebec city Citadelles leading in points, clearly a sensational talent that could easily play in SHL level hockey at the moment, when he is on the ice it's clear he can get the puck to the net and keep the opposing goalie getting a sunburn from the red light, his only weak points seems to be his defensive play for as much as he gets points his plus minus leaves some to be desired at only a +49 with 123 points
