I think that the Barracuda’s strategy of running a deeper lineup and spreading scoring more evenly is tougher to stop, but Logan Webb has been so outstanding this postseason that he could easily prove me wrong. No team has been able to stop him so far, so maybe this finals series will be more of the same.

The Tampa Bay Barracuda are one of the teams that are the best at maximizing the output of their players regardless of their TPE level. I think this is because the Barracuda run a system that is not reliant on loading up high TPE players’ ice time. Tampa is a team that rolls their lines more equally, and spreads talent around, giving everyone a chance to succeed each season. I think a great example of this was Johnny Wagner-Svensson’s performance this season. JWS has been a star in this league for a while now, but he’s starting to get older. A few seasons into regression, JWS has begun his fall-off. Because of this, he was demoted to 3rd line duties. The coaching staff in Tampa expected JWS’s normally very high point numbers to fall off a bit as he was given less ice time than usual without the best linemates as well, but JWS still thrived, leading the team in points and having one of the best offensive seasons in the league. JWS was able to take advantage of easier matchups, while playing with some more defensively focused players which allowed him more space to do his thing out there on the ice.

7. Who you got? Who wins the Challenge Cup or Four Star Cup? Why?
I have San Francisco winning the cup. They have proven time and time again that they are just in a class of their own in the SHL, and they have been in this spot before. I think their roster is arguably the most talented in the league, and I believe their depth on both offense and defense will get them this cup win. (63 words)

San Francisco has made the finals for two seasons in a row now and has
won the cup twice in the last 5 seasons with a chance to make it 3. What
has made San Francisco so successful? Is it immaculate drafting?
Coaching? Hard work from each of their players? All of the above? Should
teams learn from SFP and emulate what they’ve done to get their time in
the limelight?
I am truly impressed by San Francisco's run they have been on, including the two cup wins and potentially a third on the way. First and foremost, it is the talent on the roster. They are loaded all over, and have tremendous depth in every area of the game. I also give a ton of credit to management, who picked the right time to build this roster up to then allow for this run to happen over the past several seasons. It is easy to get eager and want to rush a rebuild, but San Francisco knew their time would come and it is paying off in a big way now. Coaching has also been stellar. Being in Texas, we have seen this San Francisco team continually adapt to any game situation and figure out a way to strategize the right way to win. This is frustrating for opponents, as they can win the blowout game but then come back the next game and shut you out. This run has not only been a team effort, but an organizational effort as well. The scary thing is that they are not slowing down in the slightest, and I expect their run to continue for at least a few more seasons ahead. (210 words)

Toronto ended up making it into the playoffs by one point while Atlanta
had the best regular season since S71 Winnipeg. Yet in the playoffs
Atlanta ended up losing the second round, while Toronto made it to the
conference finals. Does regular season success matter in the long run if
the team fumbles in the playoffs? Should teams give much importance to
the regular season or focus all of their energy to playoffs once their
team has secured a spot? Should the league in general regard the regular
season results more highly?
To be blunt, yes. I think regular season absolutely matters and should be celebrated way more than it actually is. The SHL does take out some of the variance real life short series have by not having injuries turned on, but sometimes all it takes is a truly unfortunate series of events and suddenly you have a team that just got hot and lucky in the finals at the expense of a team that was actually good. Maybe the opposing goalie just goes nuclear. Maybe a freak bounce here or there can decide a game, and those mistakes are amplified by the small sample. But people talk about playoffs like a be-all-end-all when it is in fact WAY harder to be good over 82 games in real life (or 66 in the SHL) than it is to be good in the playoffs (where you can just scrape by sometimes). And sometimes it's the format that you benefit from. Toronto did not play either of the top two seeds in the Eastern Conference until the conference final, by which point Atlanta was already out. Dissecting their run even further, you will see that they were *SCRAPING* these wins, and when they lost they lost heavily.

The regular season is about consistency. The playoffs are about survival. (218 words +4 TPE)

Looks like [TEAM] won Season 80 Challenge Cup! So who won and why? What
could the other team have done differently to change the result? What
was your favorite part of the series?
San Francisco are champs again, and a more than deserving one. This team proved excellent at counter-punching in the finals. Lose big in Game 1? Smack 'em 5-1 in Game 2. Lose an ugly one in Game 3? Break their damn heart in overtime of Game 4, then cruise behind a pair of 4-2 wins in Games 5 and 6. This team had the depth and the championship experience up and down the lineup, they knew they could do it and they went out and did it again. Credit to the Cuda on making this a competitive series, but the better team won. (106 words, +2 TPE)

In universe, I would say Tampa has a reliable coach with a system in place that works. Why change something if it's proven to be effective. Add in some high level talent in guys like JWS and Max Carnage and you've got a recipe for success. I was a big fan of the addition of Zedward Zilliams as well. Adding him is part of why they're so potent on defense. Having one of the elite defensive units in the league certainly makes Soonika's job easier.

From a meta perspective, it seems to me that Tampa values positioning more than any other team in the league. I could be wrong, but when doing the weekly updates and offseason builds in the file, I feel like I noticed Tampa favoring it. Maybe I'm wrong, or just noticed like 2 players and it made me assume it was a team thing. I also believe their GM likes to think outside the box and do thing differently than other teams. So I could see them finding a somewhat unorthodox set of lines and combination of strategies that is working for them. They seem to have a winger as their top scorer more than most teams, so maybe they've found something there.

No real surprise that SFP won the cup. The league is dominated by offense, and no team really does it better. You could argue Atlanta did in the regular season, but in recent seasons both regular and post, SFP has been the best. The only thing Tampa could have really done is try to slow down the game, keep scoring low, try to win a defensive battle. Sounds easy, but it is not even remotely easy with the forward depth the Pride have. Their 3rd "worst" forward could be on the top line on quite a few teams. As good as Tampa is defensively, it's a very tall order. I think focusing forwards to build an overwhelming offense is possibly the best team building strategy. I hope that balance is better, but I worry that it might not be.
