Toronto ended up making it into the playoffs by one point while Atlanta had the best regular season since S71 Winnipeg. Yet in the playoffs Atlanta ended up losing the second round, while Toronto made it to the conference finals. Does regular season success matter in the long run if the team fumbles in the playoffs? Should teams give much importance to the regular season or focus all of their energy to playoffs once their team has secured a spot? Should the league in general regard the regular season results more highly?

The league I think places a lot of importance on the regular season record for a team, which is to some extent the incorrect way to think about it. Yes getting home advantage is nice, and yes being able to say that they won the division is also a very nice feeling. Hoever the real important part of course is the post season, and making it there and making an impact in the post season is more important than regular season results. I mean look at some of the underdog stories where the lower seed beats the higher seed, and in real life the LA Kings winning the cup from being the team with the least points to enter the NHL postseason in 2012. I think probably the biggest thing is entering the post season with momentum from the last few games of the regular season. You want to be on the upswing to have a positive result going in, although a lot of the timing is out of your control.

11. Written, 50 to 200+ words. Did We Really Win
This seasons we saw something unusual as both conferences featuring a division where winner got arguably harder matchup than the second place team as the wild card from the other division finished with more points than the third place team in their division. How does it make you feel about the playoffs structure? Was it actually even worse for New Orleans and Buffalo to have won their division? Or does it really matter as if you are reaching for the cup likely should be prepared to face any team anyway? How much do you think it benefited Los Angeles and Philadelphia to face opponents out of their own division during first round?

The playoff structure could use a revamp, I think 1 versus 8 is better than the divisional format currently. That way the teams in the so called tougher divisions can actually attain the wildcard spot easier, and don't have to claw and fight for the last few spots in. The fact that some teams have managed to be out of the post season while having higher points than the teams that did make it in is unfair, and something that needs to change in my opinion. I don't know if this is feasible in the current way that things are structured but it is something to think about in future planning for divisional realignments.

2. Sydney Shaw has an incredible 6 powerplay goals leading the league this playoffs by 3x any other player, as a defenseman no less! Is there something San Francisco is doing differently to make Shaw a power play sniper?
3. A total of 5 goals separates SFP and TBB’s goal differentials. The difference? SFP has 17 goals from Logan Webb with most of his teammates just feeding him puck while TBB has no player besides 1 to have less than 2 goals scored this playoffs. Which team’s strategy is more likely to pay off in these finals and why?
4. Both Tibuk Soonika and Justin Time are playing extremely well for their teams, boasting very similar numbers all around. Soonika does have the edge on goals save above average however. Will this give the advantage to Tampa Bay going into the finals, or will SFP find a way to outdo the goalie playing above expectations?
5. If the SHL finals were to be held in another country this season, where would the best place be and why?
6. Which team would your player root for in the finals and why?
7. Who you got? Who wins the Challenge Cup or Four Star Cup? Why?

2. With the best combined shooting accuracy and shooting range on the San Francisco Pride, and being on the team's first powerplay. It is clear that the coaches have the best defenseman shooting, but maybe since San Francisco just has overwhelming depth, the other teams are collapsing, limiting shots in close, freeing up the point. (54 words, +1 TPE)

3. Personally I like Tampa Bay's strategy of depth scoring because that provides 3 different lines for the other team to fight against, limiting line matching and counter tactics. With that, when a player is literally scoring 2 times the number of goals as the next best player while having someone like Oskar Scholz who is up there with the Tampa Bay top scorers, maybe it isn't just Logan Webb, but just overwhelming offense in comparison so I would give the nod to the San Francisco Pride. (86 words, +1 TPE)

4. Tibuk Soonika needs to play lights out if he wants to stop the likes of the San Francisco Pride offense with Logan Webb scoring at a point per game pace. Goaltending is clearly the advantage for the Tampa Bay Barracuda but with great goaltending requires goals for the team or else it doesn't matter how good the goalie is, the team will still lose. (64 words, +1 TPE)

5. The Pride and the Barracuda sound like a very tropical animal so let's move the SHL finals to the tropics in the country of Brazil! Sure there are no lions in the vicinity, but Brazil has great infrastructure to keep the ice cold as these two teams duke it out. Plus, fans can even take some safari walks or zoo outing to see real life barracuda, hopefully expanding the love of the game to warmer countries! (76 words, +1 TPE)

6. Ville Sato-Maki would be rooting for the San Francisco Pride because the Pride eliminated his team of the Winnipeg Aurora in the first round of the playoffs in a 4 game sweep. It was a great learning lesson for the young rookie, but as a consolation prize, it would be great to know that you were eliminated by the best team in the playoffs this season. (66 words, +1 TPE)

7. For the SHL, it is hard to bet against the San Francisco Pride who have made it to the finals many times in the last few seasons and once again were near the top of the standings albiet a step below the Atlanta Inferno. As for the SMJHL, I have the top team of the regular season, the Quebec City Citadelles, taking it all. (64 words, +1 TPE)

San Francisco has a special power to activate Sydney Shaw's incredible shooting ability. While on powerplay, the head coach or GM, can press a big red button that is called AG (for automatic goal). On the press of this button, Sydney receives a dose of magic and it allows them to score a goal no matter the shot.

I would love the see the finals played somewhere internationally to grow the game. Maybe somewhere where they don't play hockey a lot. Mexico could be an option because they share a time zone with part of the US and Canada. Mexico doesn't follow hockey at all so this would be the seed to help them grow their love in the sport. Also, being in mexico, it would make it quite close to the south of the US so a lot of fans from states like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. could come to the game without much of a travel time. However, I wouldn't play the final in another country unless it was a game 7 or the equivalent. You wouldn't want to do a random game 3 in mexico and come back play game 4 in Tampa Bay or whatever. Other options could be Western Europe like London, but only if you play it on the weekend.

If my player, Louis Belanger, could root for a team. he would definiately pick Tampa simply because he likes to see new winners and with San Francisco winning last season, it would be nice to give the opportunity to new players to have a ring. We all play for a cup but Tampa would be better.

Toronto's run in the playoff was quite amazing and caused a lot of frustation for people's playoff prediction. Starting with beating New England, they caused the surprise. Let's not forget that their 4 wins in that first round were all in overtime and the winner of that round could easily been New England. But the more surprising fact is even though they were quite lucky to beat New England, they were also able to beat Atlanta which was a very strong team in the season. Regular season success does not matter in the long run because the ultimate goal is to win the cup. Almost any player would trade away their regular season achievements for more championships and those sweet rings. I don't think the league should view the regular season more highly, I think the opposite actually and people need to give more important to cup wins. Look at SFP that just won, I don't see anybody going crazy over it, but shouldn't we? They achieved what we are all trying to do here, so there needs to be something more to the fact that you win the league. Don't we have someone rich in the league that could give them team hats or something?

2. A lot of people may not realize this, but in the SHL, defensemen are often very high-scoring players, more so even than your usual sniper wingers. If a defenseman has decent shooting stats, and is put into a position where they will get a lot of scoring opportunities, most of the time they will capitalize on them. I think Sydney Shaw is a great example of this, especially in this postseason, as San Fran has been utilizing them well on the power play as a shooter. With very high stats in both Puckhandling and Shooting Range, along with a very strong power play unit around them, the 'Cuda defender is set up to be a very lethal scoring threat on the man advantage. I don't believe that San Fran's management is doing anything "different," per se, but instead they are simply using the tools they have available to them. And what an effective way to use them, because even for an offensive defenseman like Shaw, 6 power play goals in the postseason is a very impressive performance. I think that is an excellent example of San Fran's ability to manage their team and recognize the kind of talents they have on their roster. (203 words, +4)
6. Greyson Willis would definitely be rooting for the 'Cuda, based solely on the vibe of the team. The bright neon color scheme, the sick ass big fish in their logo, and their general vibe. However, he also likes San Fran's branding. It reminds him a lot of another team from a different league, the Jacksonville Kings of the SFL (if anybody knows or remembers them). So either way, he doesn't mind either of the teams playing. That all being said, Willis only truly wants one SHL team to win, and that's his own. Hamilton Steelhawks are winning 13 championships in a row. Go Steelhawk Tuahs! (105 words, +2)

I am not sure if San Fran is really doing anything different from the other teams. I think it is really that SFP powerplay unit has been on absolute fire in the playoffs. SFP powerplay unit has scored a total of 14 goals up a man. Shaw Shaw has scored 6 of those 14. Shaw just might be the benefactor of a great unit. -64 words

Having to rely on one player could be an issue. If Logan Webb is able to get shutdown, SFP may struggle. While Tampa Bay scoring can come from just about any player on any line. I would think that that would give an advantage to Tampa for this matchup. But Webb has been on a tear and shows no signs of slowing down. -63 words

Goalies are a tough one to predict. While yes both are playing well right now and up to this matchup. All it takes is one team that matches up extremely well to make you forget about that. I dont think the play so far will determine the outcome. I think Justin Time being a veteran goalie that has been here before and done it several times will be the difference maker. -71 words

Rocky Gislason is a future New Orleans Specters player. So with New Orleans being in the Western Conference, I would have to say Rocky would be rooting for Tampa Bay Barracuda in the finals. I doesnt really have a connection to either team or any of their teams prospects. So Tampa Bay it is. -54 words

I would have to give the edge to San Francisco in the Finals. Across the board, they check all the boxes. Defending Champions. Best Defenseman. Best Goalie. Playoff MVP. That is alot of skills / hardware stacked up. Not saying that Tampa cannot do it, it just wont be this season. San Fran has too many players at the top of their game. SFP in 6. :eyes: 65 words

10. The Unexpected-  1 TPE

I would say Regular season success does matter. It matters in the sense that you have to make the playoffs. You cant finish in the bottom 2 of the conference. If you are sure you will not end up there then you can just use the regular season as a trial and error. And if you are able to find something later in the season that works, (hence Toronto) you can make a case for yourself in the playoffs - 79 words

5. If the SHL finals were to be held in another country this season, where would the best place be and why?

If the SHL finals were to be held in another country this season, a country to be considered should be Iceland.  A rink could be build in the outdoors with the best ice the hockey world has ever seen. The country has an incredible hockey history and the landscape is beautiful so what better place to get to the roots of the wintery game that we all love.

A number of Icelandic hockey players moved to Canada decades ago and even created their own community on the shores of Lake Winnipeg.  These players over the years, went on to represent Canada at the Olympics and shared a great deal of success, but the lust to return Iceland to an amazing international representation at a competitive level would be the remaining dream.

If a large organized following such as the SHL were to take their finals there, imagine the inspiration to the kids and the youth who could then grow up to be a power house in the sport of hockey. It would just be so rad to see an Iceland IIHF team that could be there to represent in all international competitions. And also the volcanoes and the hot springs are a delight to be beheld.  Any reason to go there, including watching hockey would be the best.

12. Written, 50 to 200+ words. IIHF Back To Back

So last year’s IIHF had Canada win the gold medal. Again. (In a Forrest Gump voice) and good for them. They have a limitless talent pool as a lot of people create from Canada so they will always be a contender. Latvia. Near and dear to my heart it’s just freaking awesome how far they came. And so close. Only losing the gold by one goal to clench the silver. Great achievement. Good for them. Unless they beat my Norway, I totally wish they will win the gold next year.

And Switzerland wins the bronze. Always a force on the international stage and if luck had gone their way, they could have played for gold, but this fickle game we love has too many variables. It’s one of the great things about IIHF, there is still an underdog’s chance in underpants that a less likely team could win. There’s no reason that I see that the Swiss will not be contenders this year.

Czechia. Fok. You need to score more. Or at all. Kek Sorry guys but legit, let us have this one and you guys will probably win 5 straight after that. Good for you. So close. And... hopefully see you in the finals soon. But seriously, we win this one.  Hahaha. Don’t kill my dream

Good luck to everyone in the IIHF, and most importantly, have fun!
