Five-Hole Sieve - Richan Worthy?
#1

The Aidan Richan isnt normally for goalies. Going through all of the Winners, the last Winner for a goalie dates all the way back to S49 for Johannes Leitner winning the Richan that season. Before that, the last nominee for the Richan for goalie was Sir Devoir in S76. Where he went from a .900 -> .916 in one season. A terrific achievement. Looking at the GSAA of Devoir as well, going from 12.21 GSAA to 25.41 GSAA in S76.

Looking at Leitner as well, Leitner went from a -0.35 GSAA in S48 all the way to 27.87 GSAA the following season. For counting stats as well, Leitner went from a league average goalie. 21-21-2 with a .900 SV% in S48. To a 31-11-2 record and a .930 SV%. Having one of the best seasons as a goalie that decade.

Setting the state with that, I want to shout out Sieve as a potential Richan worthy nomination. In S80, to put it lightly, Sieve was an actual Sieve in net. He could not buy himself a save some nights. The team ahead of him didn’t do him any favors either. 37.7 Shots per game in S80. With 4.51 GAA, and a horrible .885 SV%. The .885 was the 2nd worst SV% by a starting goaltender that season. Looking at GSAA as well, Sieve was 37th out of 41 that season. 3rd worst by starting goaltender. With a horrible -15 GSAA. Sieve was actively hurting New England. Helping the team have their worst record in recent time, as well as Sieve going 19-22-2.

Fast forward to S81, Sieve turned it around. Looking at the counting stats, Sieve started more games (43 -> 50). Going 27-18-4 with 4 shutouts and a .903 SV%. While the SV% wasn’t as high as Leitner’s S49 run, or Devoirs S76 run. Going from the lowest of lows, to being one of the better goalies this season I think what makes him worthy of a Richan nomination. The .903 SV% was good for 6th by a goalie with 50 or more starts that season. 3rd most shutouts that season as well with 4. For GSAA as well, Sieve shot all the way up to 12 GSAA that season. Good for 9th in the league. A turnaround of saving 27 more goals saved above average from last season to this season. From being a Sieve (all pun included) in net, to being a rock solid goalie this season.

Thanks for your consideration

He finally put all the TPE into "stopping the puck" instead of "not stopping the puck"

5 hole ftw!

Honest question @luke would you consider this a bounce back season or improvement?

The two goalies you highlighted above both reached career highs by a large margin during the seasons they won the Richan. Other than shutouts this season has been fairly on par for Sieves career based on season 78 - 76.

The Richan is for most improved player. I consider going from last year -> this year as very much improved. Historically award winners for the Richan had great seasons before winning the Richan after a bad previous season. Don’t see it any differently

Going from one of the worst goalies last season to a top 10 goalie this season I would consider a vast improvement. I highlighted Devoir and Leitner just as a comparison between the SV% jump and GSAA jump was comparable.

Devoir and Leitner were good goalies before the Richan as well

Slava-Ukraini from CHI improved from 39 pts to 93. His prior best season was 59 pts. I kinda think he's got to be the front runner.
