S81 PT #5: Let’s Mix It Up Due: Sunday, March 23rd @ 11:59 PM PST

Option 2

Other than Webb, I can see a few options that can also have a chance of getting the MVP.

For the forwards, Jae-ik Barron is one of the 4 players who got 100 points (and got it exactly) and next one on his team is at 87 so he lead his team to the second place in the standings.
Slava-Ukraini Heroyam-Slava was second in goal scoring with 49 goals and was top 10 in points for a young Chicago team who finished 9th.

On defense, Ace Lightning with his second place with a 13th position team is really good too! 3rd in goals and not even top 10 in PP goals so lot of them at 5vs5.

For the goalies, Justin Time is the obvious one with his amazing season and leading all the major stats, even if he played for the best team in the league.

So this is it, something in there will get it if it's not Webb.

Option 1:

The rule change that I would implement is that if any team reaches 6 home losses in the playoffs, they are automatically bumped from the playoffs and the team that handed them the sixth loss is automatically moved to the next round. Teams would have to be much more intent on getting the job done at home and not losing in their own barns. Let's say you get through the first round in a sweep or no home losses - well, not a problem! You have a decent chance of making it to the Finals without much danger. But if you struggle in the first and second rounds, your fate in the Conf Finals or Finals may teeter on the edge. Imagine if we had a bottom dweller team end up advancing on some luck and opponent home losses only to face a powerhouse in the final with zero mulligan losses left to burn. Absolute chaos. The underdog could win the Cup in game 1.

1. As a player on Quebec, Levon will obviously favour his own team with these rule changes. The first and most important is the rearranging of the playoff format. The team who did best in the regular season gets to chose what teams will be on what side of the bracket, and they also get to chose one team who doesn’t get to play at all! The other changes were more minor, like three minute penalties in stead of two, and Levon personal favourite: Red and yellow cards! Yes! you read that right! He has implemented the penalty system of soccer to hockey! If you get a penalty, not only will you sit in the box for three minutes, but you will receive a yellow card and the opposing team will get a penalty shot! This may seem like unnecessary focusing on penalties, but don’t worry, there’s more! If you get into a fight, the winner gets a normal penalty, but the loser gets a red card!! Combine these changes with a larger net, size limited goalies and a smaller puck, you get a chaos league!

One of the biggest surprises of the season has been the meteoric rise to super stardom by the Shadow Fenix of the Seattle Argonauts. He finished second in point with 103, only five behind leader, Logan Webb. To go along with that, he finished in the top five of the entire league in both goals with 42 and assists with 61. He proved to be an outrageously efficient scorer this season with his 42 goals coming on only 195 shots on goal which is good for a 21.5% shooting percentage. Even with the gaudy offensive numbers, it can not be overlooked how good Fenix was on the defensive side of the puck, as well. His 76 takeaways were second most in the league by a forward and finished with a strong +14 plus minus rating on a team that was hovering around a negative goal differential until a late season surge to finish the campaign. Shadow Fenix should garner strong consideration for the Sarmad Khan Trophy for his strong all around game that he displayed this season to lead his team to a divisional playoff spot.

Because I am an agent of chaos, I would add a rule that the worst team in the league gets to play in a 3 game series against whoever wins the “final” round of the playoffs. So, if say San Francisco (because this would apply to them) wins the final round, they will have to play Minnesota (only picked them because of their record, no bias) in a three game series. Now, to make this really interesting, the Monarchs would be spotted 3 goals every game to give them a fighting chance against the best team in the league. This rule would only apply to teams that are the defending champions. If the Monarchs win the series though, they will get to claim the trophy and miss out on the draft lottery. Who wouldn’t want to see that happen? It could be a giant upset or it could be a slaughter from the start.

Option 1:

After each round the winning team would get to select one player from the losing team to add to their roster. This player would not count against the salary cap and would go back to their original team by the end of the season. The would allow the finals to be two all star teams going at it! You could even add in extra rules on top of this like if an underdog team wins they get two players, you can only pick one player for each position (forward, defender, goalie), etc.

This would create absolute chaos as the playoffs continued but I think ultimately it would take away from the team unity having all these players join last minute. It may feel they did "earn" their victory at the end of things. That said, doing something like this for a mini-tourny in place of the all star game could be an option.

(Oh! And an extra puck per OT period would be chaos too! So 2 pucks the first OT, 3 in the second OT, etc.)

We are going to introduce a new brand of playoff hockey called speed playoff hockey. Imagine speed chess but on energy drinks and put on the hockey ice and you have speed hockey. The idea here is that we limit the on ice time a player can have consecutively. We are going to administer new devices to all playoff players and they will get exactly 60 seconds of shift time allowed per shift and then they must take at least 1 minute of time off the ice. This is then changed ever more during power play and power kills. In such a situation as the man advantage, players will have their on ice time reduced to 30 seconds. Players must be on their bench by the time the limit expires or they will face a 2 minute bench penalty and will be sent to the box. If a game goes to overtime then new rules are put in place for goalies where 2 goalies must be on the ice for each team and they must switch every 30 seconds. One goalie must stay behind the net and one goalie in the net and they cannot leave their designated areas.

1.

We want to spice things up for the playoffs? Let’s introduce a losers bracket. For example, Baltimore beats Montreal in the first round, Montreal is now in the losers bracket and if they are survive and overcome the other 7 teams that also lost in the first round, they will then play the winner of the winners bracket for the SHL Championship. But, since the winner of the SHL Championship didn’t lose a series, they would get home ice advantage in this best of three final, but also start with a one game advantage. Meaning, they would only have to win one game, while the winner of the losers bracket would have to win two games. Is it convoluted and not at all fun to watch? Maybe!

I’ve always been a fan of a 1 vs. 16 kind of bracket, because we would get some wild matchups. The travel doesn’t matter here like in real life, but who wouldn’t want to see Atlanta vs. Minnesota in the first round?

I hate how everyone just picks the leading points getter, i understand its a sure fire way to just secure easy training points, but it annoys me. A few people that are very deserving of this award are Shadow Fenix, Ubba Lodbrock are a couple of forwards that come to mind. As far as defensemen go Stavros Kondos is the cream of the crop leading defenseman in points and assists and Sydney Shaw, she may not have scored a lot of goals compared to other defensemen but she continued to pepper the net relentlessly coming in 2nd in most shots by defenseman, her playmaking knack is not to be overlooked landing 2nd in assists by a defenseman. Lastly we have Goalies, they get no love. EVER. and they should! We don't have to look too long to see who the best Goalie is in the league Justin Time, come on down! Unbelievable season leader in wins, save percent, goals against, goals saved. you name it he is the leader. Unfortunately in the end i feel like it still has toe be Logan Webb to be this years Sarmad Khan winner. he was just too dang good!

To spice up the playoffs, we can add a ridiculous rule so the same player cannot score more than one goal per game, nor in consecutive games (I'm looking at you Logan Webb/Spidey). This means the players that score have to pass and the team has to work around who will be the scorers of the game, if that is even a possibility to work around. This rule also means that if a player accidentally scores consecutively, the goal does not count. From a goalie's perspective, they could potentially look off certain players if they can register that quick enough and leave the net open from that side. Overall this would probably provide more value to deeper teams and add a level or parity because it is just lucking into the right goals at the right time resulting in a hopefully more interesting playoffs, but I'm sure we can all agree that this rule would be a terrible addition.

The only time the top scoring player in the league should win the MVP award, is when they also lead the league in other categorize as well. You would have to have a heavy lead in points to me considered the MVP in my opinion. Maybe also lead the league in plus minus and another offensive stat also.. Without a large point lead I dont feel that you should be considered over a player who maybe excels at the defensive aspects of the game or maybe a player who had an outstanding season on a losing team regardless of how their teammates preformed. Far to often in my memory has the MVP been a player voted in purely because of points production and not the other factors that define a great player. And then there is the hidden things that we dont see on our stat lines, like the in the locker room personalities and the guys who bring the team together during a losing spell.

I’ve decided to choose one player from each position who I think should be in contention because why not

Forward: Shadow Fenix
Stat line: 42-61-103

Fenix was a productive beast, picking up on the backend of the season when the team needed him most and putting Seattle in a prime playoff position. Along with this, Fenix shot at an insane 21.5% rate compared to Webb's 15.5%. Along with this Fenix was a power play BEAST, going 15-27-42 on the PP, out scoring web in this area by 12 PPP.

Defense: Ace Lightning
Stat line: 21-36-57
Might be a bit of a weird pick, but all things considered, the aging dman had a pretty impressive season. He was able to be a top producing dman, but he was also a shot blocker, finishing the season with 240 shots blocked. Also considering he was on a completely new team with no line chemistry, this was a pretty good season.

Goalie: Justin Time
Stat line: 40-12-2, 0.923%, 2.54 GAA
Logan Webbs very own teammate. It goes without saying that Justin Time was by far the best goalie this season. The most wins by 7, an insane 48.97 GSAA (19.25 more then second), and 6 shutouts to top it all. Absolutely insane numbers.

(Sorry for the weird format, this was made on a google docs on my phone)

Look, normally I would talk about changing things up to make it fair for all teams. But now 10 seasons in to my time in Texas, we have been so unlucky and lost some heartbreaking series. Because of that, I say screw it, I am changing the rules so that Texas wins it all. First, I would make it so that all other teams have one less line than us so their players get tired more quickly. Oh, and they also can't have any players rostered over 2000 TPE, too much of an advantage. Why stop there though? Texas also will have a smaller net for their goalie, while our opposition will have a larger net to allow for more goals for the Renegades. As if that was not enough, Texas will also start every game with a 3 goal lead, just to make sure we have an advantage right off the bat. Hopefully with all of that, me and my teammates will get our first cup in Texas!
