S82 PT #2: It's In The Game Due: Sunday, May 4th @ 11:59 PM PST
#91

Task 1:

William Salming is an SHL veteran. This is his 24th campaign. He likes to be a mentor and help younger players to fulfill their potential. As a Steelhawk, Salming sometimes shares a room with his young linemates Dominic Enselmo and Hughes Incorporated. Those boys like to play video games for sure. Like NHL, FIFA and other sports games. Salming was similar in his youth. He loved to play sports video games. Like NHL, FIFA, F1, Tour de France, PGA Tour, Snooker, WSOP Poker game and so on. Salming thinks that if boys play sports games, there is no danger. But if they will play some other games like action games or adventure games, then you are in a danger to play too much. But sports games are always fine because they develop your skills because you learn from other sports and it improves your game in ice-hockey too. Salming has of course told the boys to not play too much and switch off lights at 10 PM so they get enough sleep. Rest is crucial on long road trips.

Option 2:
Looking at how we could add some RPG elements to the league, one idea came to mind that I feel would be a create element to add. Position-based skill trees could be your answer. Start with basic classes like Sniper (shooting accuracy, quick release), Playmaker (passing, vision), Power Forward (physical play, shot power), and Two-Way Forward (defensive awareness, takeaways). These are just a few of the options for forwards.Players could earn XP through performance stats to unlock abilities. Early trees might give stat bonuses, mid-tree unlocks special moves like "No-look Pass" or "Momentum Crusher", while maxing a tree grants signature abilities like "Deadeye" (increased scoring on clean shots). These types of skills would give crafting your character a more "skill" type of vibe since it would allow players to try out different builds instead of sticking to one meta tree. For extra depth, add prestige abilities that reference hockey legends or create synergy bonuses when complementary classes play together. This system rewards specialization while keeping things fresh with meaningful player development.

Written Option 2
So one thought that I have been kicking around ever since the move over to FHM from STHS is the idea of counter players. On paper it seemed like these were viable options with FHM, but they aren't for our implementation if they exist in that form at all. Essentially how it works in my head is that you have a player who drains their opponents abilities while they are on the ice - this would put a huge emphasis on line matchups as these players would be shutdown gods. I think it would really pull into a neat perspective the idea of having defensive stalwhart forwards, and I believe a lot of new folks create this type of player before being forced into the meta of the good stats and 18's across the board.
Another thing I'd like to see if player ability caps depending on your player. If you are a pure sniper maybe you can get 20 getting open and shooting, but only 16 passing. I think these caps would really dig into the RPG aspect and force players into specific builds yes, but bring build diversity and mix things up.

Option 1

Javelin Bodine notices his young roommate glued to a handheld console during every moment of downtime on their road trip. At first, it’s amusing seeing the rookie play video games. He remembers being that age, unwinding with games. But as the hours tick by and the rookie skips team meals and film sessions to squeeze in more screen time, Bodine starts to worry. It hasn’t hurt the kid’s performance yet, but Javelin’s seen how quickly bad habits can snowball. Still, he isn’t one to run to the coaches generally. At least not right away. Instead, he strikes up a conversation, suggesting they hit the gym together or watch some tape. Bodine frames it as mentorship, not judgment. Eventually, the rookie opens up, and they find a better balance. For example, games after practice, not instead of it. Javelin never wanted to be “the fun police,” but he did want to be a leader. And maybe, in this case, he managed both. Hopefully this can be a good lesson to the young gun.

We should add Madness to the SHL. And then make it a looter shooter where you have to clear a space ship full of Eldritch Aliens. But like in the style of the 90s Mighty Ducks TV show. Like Lovecraft, 90s anthropomorphic cartoons and DOOM all rolled up into one. Change the stats. offense can have big guns, defense has melee weapons. Then you can get like legendary hockey sticks that fire the unborn Hive babies at your enemies and it explodes and stuff. would be sick. I guess of course the games would be PvP content, I guess the only way to do it though would be the Iron Wolves from Destiny. Make it all about gear and not about skill or level or abilities. You better be grinding in the Eldritch DOOM mines to get your Best-in-Slot Elbow Pad or your gonna get the floor wiped with your face by a 11 year old kid who is telling you they did your mom.

I am not sure if FHM can handle RPG elements but having abilities you unlock when you reach a TPE milestone would be pretty cool. Once you reach a certain amount of TPE you can choose an ability which would be your signature move. There could be an entire skill tree along with this so that as your player develops you can either specialize or be a generalist. Of course balancing would certainly be an issue but with time I am sure that could be sorted out. Another idea could be a set number of one use items each team gets. Then, during the season the GM or a designated player could activate them for a game. Maybe it gives all the players a 5% boost to a stat or an edge in the faceoff dot. Whatever the case you only get to use it once per season (or perhaps once per playoff series?). Again super un-balanced and could be abused as teams just focus down the "top" team by everyone coordinating to use their abilities against the top.

If Myers has million fans, then I’m one of them.
If Myers has one fan, then I’m THAT ONE.
If Myers has no fans, that means I’m dead.

Option 2

It would be cool to add items or equipment back into the SHL, but with different effects. Coaching used to be equipment and the better the equipment the better the TPE output. If we were to re-introduce equipment but change what it actually does, I would be all for that. Maybe it will add a pro and con to mental stats or something? Could even bring in sponsorships for certain equipment. What would the actual benefit for the equipment be though? Maybe it adds a seasonal boost to a stat? Would have to have a pro con system for it to really work though. I feel like if it affected the mental stats we do not currently use it would be better. I can see skates affecting acceleration, speed, agility, and balance. While a stick or gloves would affect puck handling, shooting, passing, ect. Would be cool to add equipment back, but not sure how it would be balanced. Another idea is to add class, but we could already do something like that with a name like archetypes.

RIP Dangel #AD26  |  RIP TDZ

While last season Toivo was primarily bunking with Finnish Native Teemu Jarvinen, this season as Captain he’s been bouncing around between the rookies. This particular trip is was Shio Corin’s (@Flyerfan9988 ) turn, which Toivo thought odd it took so long as they’re both 2OA’s. Anyway, they’ve gotten along well at practices and in the LR and He’s always been so hockey focused, so how could bunking be any different? Can’t say that he’s not exactly still hockey focused in his free time.. but instead actual hockey Toivo has discovered that Shio loves EASports NHL games. Something that Toivo hadn’t experienced growing up, he decided to give it a shot (and was subsequently destroyed by the more adept gamer). The next night was all about Diablo, which also intrigued Toivo, so the duo created characters together on Shios console and have revisited them frequently.

While Toivo is skeptical of Shios free time being all dumped into video games, it has yet to affect his performance on the ice as he’s continually gotten better as the season progressed. So Toivo will continue to let him do so, even offering to try and set up a team building tournament on the NHL games, and the duo will continue to play Diablo long after the road trip ends and their back in STL. As long as Shio isn’t afraid to hit the gym, or watch some tape in-between game sessions he can game as much as he pleases.

At first Logan Webb doesn't see this as an issue. To be honest Webb used to be a gamer himself and would bring a system on long road trips, it was a great way for teammates to bond as they played one another. Who would love the idea of progressing through a game together, challenging one another from time to time and even have a few fun wagers. Back in the day Logan had won quite a few rounds of drinks with his gaming skills.

So, like any responsible adult and leader on a team, he challenged the youngster to a game. Sure to pick up right where he left off he dove into a round of EASHL, only to lose 5 games immediately. Puzzled but undeterred he said "Madden!" Only to lose another 2 games. "The show?" He lost. "Call of Duty." Also a big "L" for every round they played.

Finally the young player, perhaps showing mercy, or legitimately getting tired looked at Webb and told him he was heading to bed they had a game tomorrow. Webb was fuming how could gaming have changed so much, had he lost his touch? No, clearly the problem was the games themselves and the time his young teammates spent on them.

Once again being the better person and concerned about their development as a player, Webb did the responsible thing and told the coaches gaming had become a distraction and the team needed to focus on development and plays.

Not saying Webb was the reason, but Edmonton has become a playoff team since he suggested this.
