The obvious answer for what to bring to the SHL from other RPG games is a mana bar, right? There's a reason it's something that's consistent across nearly every RPG game out there. A mana bar, or just a special skills bar opens up so much flexibility in game design. Do you want to use that mana to cast spells? It works. Do you want to use it to control how often you can spam your "triple phantom puck" ability? It works for that too. So it's the obvious answer to add an RPG game style mana bar to the SHL. The issue would be how do we scale it? We can't have TPE go into a mana bar directly, as that would ruin builds. Instead do we give everyone the same mana amount? I don't know if that works either. Honestly, the more I think about this, the more I think we should scrap the entire idea. ![]() Registered Senior Member
MattyJ noticed his young roommate barely looked up from his screen the whole road trip. Morning, night, even right after games, he was always playing World of Warcraft. It had not hurt his play yet, but MattyJ knows that distractions like that could snowball. Instead of snitching to the coaches or making a big scene, he took a different route. One night, he sat down next to him, handed over a PS5 controller, and booted up Super Blood Hockey, his favorite childhood game. MattyJ asked him if we wanted to play a real game with some grit. They played a few wild, chaotic/bloody matches, laughing the whole time. In between games, MattyJ slipped in advice about balance, strength, and what it takes to really win in the SHL. It was not a lecture, just real teammate banter. By the end of the trip, the kid was still gaming, but now it was a game about hockey. MattyJ had earned some real respect with the youngin'.

prompt 1:
Theres no problem if my homie wants to game, as long as he isnt playing some trash like call of duty or fortnite. Also as a star player I have absolute control over the television so as long as they can live by that we will be alright. I dont know if you have seen the hit new two thousand and twenty five game puck, which simulates an extremely lifelike experience and will surely increase the skills of any professional player. I’ve heard that top coaches such as ace are using it to make sure they are at the top of their abilities. Ideally we could play some mario kart together, specifically the nintendo sixty four one because it was the best iteration of the game. In the end I think the gaming can be left alone as long as they dont play a patrik laine and start playing fortnite because then we should probably just look at trading them. Roblox is alright though. ![]() ![]() ![]() Registered S36 Challenge Cup Champion
There's nothing inherently wrong about spending a lot of time playing video games. The only issue I could see here is if it becomes a force of habit and starts to dig into both your personal and - in this case - professional life. A lot of things factor into what my ultimate course of action is going to be; are the video games negatively impacting his performance on the ice and expectations as a teammate? Are they POSITIVELY impacting his performance on the ice, and maybe it's something I don't want others trying to replicate? It's a sticky situation for sure, but generally speaking I think the best move here would be to assess the overall picture and talk to the guy one-on-one. If it's really starting to either impact his performance on the ice OR others are starting to join him in late-night video game sessions, then it would be time to take it to management.

Option 1 – Look, River understands completely the dedication and determination required to make it in the SMJHL. And she knows that you have to put in hard work to achieve results. But if Ty Bendy is spending his hotel time playing Fortnite or Minecraft or Black Ops 2 or whatever the hell, then why should she make a fuss about it? Clearly it hasn't impacted his play on the ice, and she's not the team mom. She's honestly more likely to commend him for his work-life balance and for giving himself time to relax. Hell, if he has a second controller and is up for it, she'd always be willing to play along and have some team bonding fun. It's not like she can talk – she spends quite a bit of her downtime designing amusement parks in Planet Coaster, and it's hardly impacted her devotion or skill to the sport and the team.

I think a good system to bring over to the SHL would be some sort of rougelite elements similar to Vampire Survivors or Balatro. Something that makes every game different, other than the players and teams of course, could be items or talents that can turn the tides that the coaches can pull out during the game to accentuate their team's strengths or hide their team's weaknesses. One example could be that their team's goals could count as double in the third period. That could cause some tense situations! Another example could be that while their team is shorthanded on the ice, there can be no penalties called against their team! Which means they can check/trip/and bash their opponents in, giving them an even play state or even an advantage! I think these rougelike elements would be super exciting for the casual player to watch, and make it even more exciting for coaches of these teams. ![]() Buffalo Stampede Arch btw
I’d bring back an old school SHL RPG element from the grave which was equipment. However I’d also bring in things like houses, vehicles, leisure facilities and areas. Each item bought could bring temporary benefits that expire after a few games, and can only be purchased once a season. A team that’s fighting for a playoff spot could have players buy these temporary boosts to try and get that late season push, while the team that is currently in a spot can buy these to try to win a difficult round in the playoffs. This would give teams a chance to get the strategy going with discussions on when would be the best time to buy these boosts. These could be critical and could make for some very interesting upsets in the season as well as detrimental effects in the playoffs which could make or break a team. Kind of like a pit stop in formula 1.

First of all, I do not think Ongo Gablogian is the shining beacon of what exactly to do in order to be successful on the ice. With eight points in 33 games, and zero goals on 33 shots, he is not in any position to tell anyone how to prepare for their game or how to act when they are away from the ice. With that said, I guess we could suspend our disbelief for a moment and say something super inspiring like Ongo takes this young player under his wing and gets him to focus on watching game tape or something, but we all know Ongo is too busy stuffing Taco Bell down his gullet to even notice that the other player is there, let alone that they’re there and playing videogames all day. If he happens to not be eating Taco Bell, it’s because he is in a Taco Bell induced coma.

Honestly I dont think that Pork Tenderloin would narc on a teammate for what they do in their free time as long as it's not something like hard drugs or alcoholism. If someone wants to play video games in their free time then that's their prerogative. I personally think that it's extremely important to have things that you can do in your free time to unwind and relax. I agree that you do need to be focused when you're in the game but if you're living and breathing hockey 24/7 I really think that you're going to get burnt out. The last thing I want is a teammate that is burnt out and cant focus on the game because they dont have any downtime. But, if it were to progress to the point that my teammate just didn't have their head in the game because they're focused on their video games or whatever, I would probably talk to the coach.

An interesting change to the system would be the implementation of grittiness via a mechanic like edge from Shadowrun or expertise from many systems. Usually they are built into stats but that would lead to a meta built maxing those stats out. Instead, I would base the "points" or "uses" of edge or expertise as an accumulation based on the existing performance metrics. If your player continuously hits a high rating threshold on a specific scenario, say defense, they accumulate points for that type of scenario in the future. The more often they are in that scenario in the future they are more likely to either have success or prevent failure by adding some number to the result of the random number generator. Keeping the points to a simple accumulator that adds some percent to RNG and automatic application makes it much easier to keep in check and not slow down the sims or required some kind of manual interference from a GM or player prior to sim times and mimics the existing simulation via FHM 10.

Playing games can be a great hobby, but not if you are using them to escape reality or avoid responsibility. I would like to think that my player would join them at first, because they are probably just missing a close friend being on a new team or are not fully adjusted to their new environment. After a while of getting to know the rookie, I would try to invite them out with some other teammates to help break the ice all that much more. I think just reaching out to the new teammate alone would be a huge boost in confidence and it would help with on ice chemistry. That would probably help the team overall as well since building chemistry is a huge part of playing as a team. Plus who knows, maybe that person will become someone that means a lot to me in the long run. (150 words) ![]() ![]() File Worker Senior Member
I would take this little bird under my wing and have a serious conversation with them about the way they spend their time. at the pro level its different then college and amatature levels. You have to be able to manage your time wisely and if you arent spending your time getting better then you're getting worse and someone is gonna steal your lunch. I dont want to babysit anyone and im not going to the coaches. When you're at this level all you can do it share your experience and give them the knowledge and advice to help themselves. If the actions continue and it effects the team then the conversation may escalate to the coaching stuff, but you have to be able to understand each person is unique and I'm not trying to cost them a paycheck or opportunities because they value this time differently then i would. We all develop at our own pace.

Honestly, the mechanic I’d most want to bring from games to the SHL would be letting the “roleplay” with teammates have an impact on-ice. There’s already the chemistry ratings in FHM, but they are based strictly on the time teammates have spent together (or maybe it’s a linemate thing, I dunno, man, I barely know how this stuff works, but you know what I mean). Imagine if the interactions we all have in our virtual locker rooms could have an impact on that chemistry? On a line with your best friend on the team? Here, have a chemistry boost! That one teammate demanding a trade has everyone a little on edge? Down goes the chemistry! This could also have some fun offseason impacts as well. That player your team just acquired was actually a bitter rival in juniors or IIHF? Haha, the chemistry will make note of that. The player is actually a beloved figure in the league with a pedigree of winning? Everyone liked that! ![]() |
