Leafs Off-Season

Heres why I saw no to Phanuef... WE HAVE A CHANCE AT THE PLAYOFFS! Why trade away one of our positional needs? I would do Gunnarsson but who would trade a 7th OA for him? Great defenceman but that's an overpayment.
there are other options than 7th overall straight up for someone.

There might be a chance at making the playoffs but you have to ask the question, does this help the team more long-term? The obvious answer to me is yes, and building the team isn't about just trying to make the playoffs next year but it's about trying to be successful for a long time.

Well in the article it said those guys. The rumor is a top defenceman. Also you build for the future to a certian extent. We made the playoffs and we made it pretty comforably. We gave Boston a run for their money. A team we could never play against before for some reason. Why trade away are arguably best defenceman? That's hurting the chances of making the playoffs a lot. Also you build for the future at the same time but not like this. When you are a playoff team you don't hurt your chances to this extreme in an attempt to help the future.

If you are always building towards the future then you will never have a successful team. This is an extreme example but look at the Penguins. They gave away some assets that would have helped them in the future for the now.

if you're getting better value, yeah, you do.

Here is a list of 7th overall picks in the NHL since 2002. Odds are, whoever goes 7th will likely be a better player than Dion.

2012 Mathew Dumba D Red Deer (WHL) Minnesota Wild
2011 Mark Scheifele C Barrie (OHL) Winnipeg Jets
2010 Jeff Skinner C Kitchener (OHL) Carolina Hurricanes
2009 Nazem Kadri C London (OHL) Toronto Maple Leafs
2008 Colin Wilson C Boston U. Nashville Predators
2007 Jakub Voracek C Halifax (QMJHL) Columbus Blue Jackets
2006 Kyle Okposo RW Des Moines (USHL) New York Islanders
2005 Jack Skille RW U.S. Junior National Team (Intl) Chicago Blackhawks
2004 Rostislav Olesz C Vitkovice HC (Czech) Florida Panthers
2003 Ryan Suter D U.S. Junior National Team (Intl) Nashville Predators
2002 Joffrey Lupul C Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL) Anaheim Ducks

Ok now look at that list and look at the defenceman. Dion plays big minutes and is a key part of our team. You don't find defenceman like this easily...

No, defence is more important. Why gamble with potential when you have a proven player.

Jakub Voracek should be a yes imo, also why doesn't Scheifele have any potential now?

I really have nothing to say to that, I think you're being ridiculous.

I put it as arguable. I say no because defence is more important. He is a great player and well I acutally love his play style. Also I never said Scheifele had no potential.

Being ridiculous? Sorry for not wanting to start another rebuild... Would rather have a chance at making the playoffs.

A proven player that is well overpaid and is about to become a free agent.

Like I've said, I'll argue with anyone who says Dion stinks. I really like him and I think he's a good defenceman and a top-pairing defenceman. But Mark Scheifele's value is a hell of a lot higher than Dion Phaneuf's and it's really not even close.

I wouldn't say he is overpaid. It's a hefty amount but not overpaid. It's all about opinions. You cannot tell me that Scheifele will pan out, therefore, I would want to stick with the proven player.

How is defence more important? every position is important, but a player like Dion (pros: big, strong, can hit, big slapshot; cons: not a good skater, not very instinctive) is not very difficult to find.

A future number one centre has more value than a debatable top-pairing defenceman with below-average skating ability. Dion Phaneuf is not Zdeno Chara. He can be replaced.
