Leafs Off-Season

I'm gonna have to echo the majority here that drafting Fucale would be a very poor choice for the Leafs.

Datsyuk says high? You mean the biggest outlier in NHL history lol. Not sure exactly what he has to do with the Leafs 1st round pick seeing as he wasn't even a first round pick. Anyways all these people talking about the Leafs needing a centre, sure we need a number 1 centre........THIS year. We aren't getting that THIS year at 21. In the first round you pick BPA because what your team needs now might not be what your team needs in 3-4 years when that player is breaking in. If they decide that Fucale is the BPA then so be it. Remember in 2005 when the Habs got roasted for picking Price in the first round because they had Theodore? Ya pick doesn't look so bad now does it. END RANT.
....You clearly didn't read as my response was to Taylor saying there's no centers that late in the draft that would be number one centers. Datsyuk was drafted what? 171st overall. Saying there's no 1st line centers at 21 in this deep draft is what I was referring to by saying Datsyuk says hi thank you very much

Thank you to My boys @Merica and @Ragnar for the lovely sigs!

You have a 24 and a 25 year old goalie... Assuming one of them turns out to be your franchise goalie, by the time he's ready to retire your goalie in Fucale will be at the very youngest about 26-27? There's a difference between strengthening your goalie position and drafting for a need you don't have lol.
Ok let's say Bernier because he has the most potential. Fucale is what 18? We can give him all the time he needs to progress, so idk let's say 3-5 seasons? Let's go withj the middle 4. Bernier will be 28-29, Fucale will be 22-23. Then we give Fucale a year or two as the backup. Fucale becomes 25ish, Bernier becomes 31ish. Perfect time to rotate goalies, trade Bernier and keep Fucale.

This is of course if everything pans out.

Anyone but a goalie or defenseman unless someone like Pulock drops

Or Bernier turns out well and you have a good goalie for 15 years...

Which you still need someone to replace eventually. Always good to be strong in the net position for now and the future. Something we have struggled to have for a long time.

But like I said Datsyuk is an extreme outlier. Could a top line centre be taken at 21st? Of course, but my point is that we shouldn't just take a centre because we need a centre on our team next year. No matter what said player becomes he won't be the Leafs 1C next year. The Leafs or any team should take BPA whether that be Fucale,Pullock, or Rychel. That is up to the head office who they think is BPA but drafting based on what your team needs today is going to bit you in the ass every single time. I would be very happy with drafting Fucale.

Right but that's just overly necessary imo. Why use a pick on Fucale here when there's legitimately expected to be PLENTY of top talent that'll still be there at 21. You have 2 goalies that are very talented right now, you play them their course and then you focus on a new goalie. Having one in the wakes is good and all but 6 years in the future, when your starter would only be 31 or 32? It's just seems like a waste of a pick to me. I love Fucale and I hope he does well but I just don't see Toronto needing him. Then again I'm used to the Ducks who have only had one drafted goalie who's still progressing well. The remainder we've got through FA or Trades

and IMO being strong in the net is always a good thing Wink

Would be nice knowing that we are covered between the pipes for the future and we can worry about other shit.

Oh I agree, I don't think taking a center is needed and BPA is the best bet but if there's 2 close players in terms of BPA say for instance Horvat and Fucale then you need to weigh needs and who could help your team sooner and that's obviously not going to be a goalie imo

Like I said, if Horvat is available take him but I just don't see that happening.

Well ya it obviously depends on who else is still on the board but I doubt a player like Horvat makes it to us. Fucale is going to be a great pick for any team, I guess we will just have to see how the draft plays out tomorrow.

That's what I'm saying. Not this year though. You want to get the longest use out of your net minders when they're playing well. Let Reimer/Bernier play a few seasons, then draft a goalie. Right now that pick would be a waste in regards to your other needs.

I definitely agree, but given that a good chunk of goalies are either undrafted or later round draft picks, on a team like Toronto who seems fit for the foreseeable future on goalie talent, it just would make more sense to me to draft a forward imo.

I mean when I think of the top 5 goalies in the league today it's
Lundqvist- 205th overall
Rinne- 258th overall
Quick- 72nd overall
Anderson- 77th overall
Price- 5th overall

Now that's only 1 in the first 2 rounds, that doesn't mean 1st round goalies don't pan out but where goalie isn't a dire need for anytime soon I just think it'd be more productive to take a forward and look for a steal of a goalie the way most goalies turn out. Again you can't really go wrong for Fucale, but it's just not a huge need imo

It wouldn't be a waste Wink

Like I said this is just something I want. Unless Horvat is still available or maybe the scouts see something very special hidden in one of the other guys I want them to pick Fucale. Just a personal preference.
