The Weeknd is an RnB singer from Canada who has drawn series hype from his previous three FreEps. Those three drops have won over many people to the point that listeners were on pins and needles anticipating this album. Me personally, I did not like any of those three projects as a whole. Sure there were some good tracks (especially the cover of Michael Jackson's D.D.) but overall I felt like he was biting the king of pop's style (R.I.P.) a little too hard. Today we get his debut studio album Kiss Land, and by all accounts, it is a solid piece of work. The album starts off with its best track in Professional and sets that dark tone that you have come to expect production wise. The dichotomy he presents within the play of light and dark is fantastic and one of his endearing qualities. His voice is fantastic as usual and he can really hit those high notes. He can also write great songs which a lot of RnB singers just cannot.
There are some negatives though. First off he bites MJs style way too much and it is annoying. The dude has natural talent so I don't understand why he does pave his own lane rather than ghosting behind someone he will never eclipse. The songs in my opinion are a tad too long and can ruin some of the songs, especially Kiss Land. Kiss Land's first half was amazing and then the second half came in flat and really killed the mood. The other main problem is the lack of variation. Meaning that he doesn't really change mood throughout the songs and the beats stay relatively the same.
Overall I liked this album. It probably won't find my best of list when the end of the year goes around, but it will get a couple spins from me.
