SMJHL HO PEANUT! Final Score: ANC (5) - CAR (3)
[S] Back here at the Outlaw Saloon where the Kelowna Knights beat the Outlaws 4-3 in overtime, now its time to bounce around the league. If you're just tuning in, I'm Sip Nightly and with me is number crunching tetris master Allen Wench. We head out now to Anchorage where the defending champion Carolina Kraken took on the Armada at the Sullivan Center.
[A] That's right Sip, and in only their second meeting this season so far, the Armada were out for retribution against the defending champions after their overtime loss back on December 7th. Lets see how the game breaks down. 1st Period [A] Carolina ended the last meeting with 20 total penalty minutes. They must have really felt like trying to sink a battleship early as just thirty seconds into the first period, they chalk up another 2 minutes off a tripping minor from Hans Schweinsteiger. Fortunately for them, their PK unit denied the Armada any salvo opportunity. [S] Not that they needed it anyway. There was quite a bit of back and forth on these teams and wow were their aiming computers flailing! Jay Reeves finally notched two goals for the Armada, the first one coming with 8:30 left in the period and the second with just 2:10 remaining. His tenth and 11th on the season. Before that, boy was the net whiffed by both teams. A total of thirteen shots in the period completely sailed by the net. [A] It kind of makes me wonder if they were trying to shoot some wicked tuna instead of a puck! 2nd Period [S] Carolina started off the second period with a bang, scoring just 4 seconds in off a one-timer from Alexei Rykov. Lets have a look again at that shot and just how out of position at the start Ian Venables was: [A] Incredible! Know what else is incredible, Sip?
[S] What's that Allen? [A] These alternate jerseys the teams have in the game tonight. The uniform companies have really outdone themselves. It's almost hard to believe that its Carolina and Anchorage! [S] They sure did Allen. Fortunately this season the alternate jersey nights are few and far between. That goal from Carolina tightened the game up 2-1, still in favor of Anchorage and they would indeed have nothing of it. Ryan Cvitkovich answers back for Anchorage at the 7 minute mark, his third of the season, bringing the game to 3-1 for the Armada. Captain Ahab would be very proud. [A] Indeed he would be. He would also be proud of the special teams unit for the Armada as they followed up that goal with a powerplay goal by Augustus Wang with a minute-thirty left in the period. This would take it up 4-1 for the Armada. [S] Its expected to have off days, even for defending champions but goaltender interference was a penalty that could have easily been avoided by Ricky Bobby. Then again, I suppose he was thinking "If you ain't first, you're last!". [A] I wouldn't completely discredit him though. He did make up for it right as the penalty ended as Anchorage's Shelby Schmackers was called for holding and giving the Kraken a shot again on the man advantage, and they did. Scoring with just 40 seconds left in the priod, Ricky Bobby fed his 10th assist on the season to Padraig Sarantez who made the score, his 6th on the year. That split the score again 4-2, still in favor of Anchorage but I'm sure it wasn't enough. 3rd Period & Summary [S] Carolina and Anchorage fought hard in the 3rd period, and near the end Carolina brought it back within one off a goal from Alexei Rykov, their 11th of the season making it 4-3 but you were right Allen, it just wasn't enough. [A] Indeed, and in a hail-mary move Carolina pulled their goaltender Ian Venables with 1:30 left in the game to give them that sixth man on the ice. Whenever teams do this, it is always a risky gamble leaving their net empty. Sometimes it does pay off though. This time, it didn't as Anchorage's Daniel Bischoff sent the Kraken back to the depths from whence they came, sailing the puck into the net, his 14th of the season and solidifying the Armada's win, 5-3 over the defending champion Kraken. [S] Carolina came into the game after having just snapped a three game losing streak, but fell short while Anchorage moves on to a three game winning streak with the win, and moves the two 1-1 on each other for the season. Now, lets look at the stars of the game:
[S] That'll wrap it up for us here. Coming up next, our St. Louis counterparts will recap the loss of straw as the Lethbridge Lions take the Scarecrows out of the field 4-1. [A] Goodnight everyone! |
