The S51 SHL entry draft had plenty of high-skilled defensemen, with three of them going in the first four picks. While we might not see 75% defensemen in the first four picks for the upcoming SHL draft, there are still three defensemen among the top-6 TPE earners for all players in the S52 class. Today we are gonna look into one of them, Sven Yxskaft. He was the 14th overall pick in the S51 SMJHL entry draft, selected by the Vancouver Whalers. He has shown to be a hard worker, and rumours tell us that we should not be too surprised if we see him being picked in the first half on the 1st round.

On the international stage, Sven has represented Team Sweden in the WJC and showed up strong in the playoffs where he was at a point-per-game pace until they were knocked out in the quarter finals against Canada. He is expected to put on the yellow and blue jersey again for the next WJC and even potentially IIHF.

Skating
Sven is a strong skater which is a key skill for any two-way player. He is able to join in on any offensive rushes and can quickly get back to the defensive zone ahead of the opponents if the play transitions, quickly cutting off any breakaways.

Positioning
Another of Sven’s strongest skills is his positioning. Be it making himself open for a pass, or blocking the shot line of an opposing player, he has shown to be frustrating to his opponents and hard to pin down. Last season in Vancouver, Sven ended up with the most shots blocked(51) among the rookies on the team and was the 4th best blocker on the team overall. Excluding the goalies, of course.

Offensive Game
Sven started last season as being a pass-first player, but as the season played along it was clear that he was highly focused on improving his shot. Something proven by the fact that he doubled his goals scored during the playoffs compared to the regular season while playing less than half the amount of games.

Coming back to Sven’s strongest attributes, his puck handling is one any coach would like to see on their team. He creates plays through the neutral zone thanks to stand-out playmaking, and you can at the same time see him multiple times carrying the puck all the way into the offensive zone on his own and setting up the attack.

Defensive Game
Sven is a mobile defensemen and even though he is of smaller size, compared to the average player, he is not afraid to go for the body. He is strong in the physical game and has great stickhandling to get in the way of an opponent’s stick and/or get the puck. Another quality of his is to simply get in the way to prevent any dangerous passes or shots. He is a disciplined player and saw very little time in the penalty box last season(14 PIM).

Sven can be counted on in all situations, and while his minutes on the Vancouver Whalers have been relatively low he is expected to be given more responsibility come next season.

Summary
Sven has the talent and work ethic to become a top defenseman in the SHL. However, he will need more time in the SMJHL to grow and improve his speed and play even more before he is ready for the pro league.

Highlights
Here is a highlight of one of Sven’s many blocked shots from his first season in Vancouver.
