Here we are! Finally in St. Louis. It was a long ride from Colorado for me and for the rental car. I had to tell my intern to stop multiple times during the road trip because it seems like american beer makes me pee alot and often. He knew what he signed up for so don't worry. Right now he is looking up a hotel room for me so I can have finally some time to relax enjoy amenities St. Louis has to offer. While I'm enjoying some snacks and beer I'm talking to a local construction worker about the city and its history. He seems really proud about St. Louis calling it being an independent city. I don't really understand how city, in a state, in a country, can be independent. Doesn't that make it a country of it own? But whatever works I guess. He also talks about the city's rich music culture and how right now he is maintaining the beautiful Gateway Arch. Maybe I should check it out before tonight's game. I have a press pass for Scarecrows game against Halifax Raiders. Can't wait. Wooheee! The Gateway Arch was great and all but now it's game. As I'm walking towards the press section of the arena, I'm talking to a local sports journalist about the home team, St. Louis Scarecrows. The Scarecrows have won 7 championships during their time which is pretty impressive. The team has huge support in the city and people love them. And I'm not surprised. This season has also been good to them as they are close to the top of the standings. The journalist guy also tells me to pay attention to the player #18, Ruslan Zaporz.. Zazophtz.. Ruslan Zaporozhets. He has been great this season posting over point per game so far. The conversation is rudely intercepted by security guy who tells me that I'm not allowed to have my own beers in the arena. And I thought this was the land of the free! Anyway, the game is about to start. Scarecrows vs. Raiders The game is now over and for home crowds disappointment it ends in a 3-4 loss. Atmosphere was electric the whole game and the press pass came really handy when I went for a drink or two. Zazpo.. Zepozh.. Ruslan didn't show up much that game but for my positive surprise some Finnish goalies saw action. Jason Voorhees got some ice time after Scarecrows changed their goalies. He didn't let any goals and was the mvp for me with 8 saves! I have to down my beer fast and follow the other reporters to the locker rooms so I can have an interview with the guy. By the way the winning goalie was also a Finn, Halifax goaltender Olli Saarinen. Ah I'm proud to be a Finn. In the Scarecrows locker room I try to find Voorhees but it seems almost impossible. I notice that I'm starting to get little bit tipsy and some suit guys are looking me weird. Finally I see Voorhees as some coach or someone pulls my arm telling me to leave: "Sir you're drunk, go home." While the Scarecrows staff are dragging me out of the locker room I yell, "Nice shutout man!", to the guy with pads. Everybody got so upset about my positive words that they escorted me all the way outside of the arena. Turns out that the guy who I yelled at wasn't Voorhees at all. He was the other goalie who was called to the bench after letting 4 soft goals. I tried to apologize but the staff just left saying nothing. After that unfortunate hassle I get my intern to pick me up from the arena parking lot and drive to my hotel. He gives me my keycard and I head down to my room while my intern spends his night in the car for budget reasons. All and all it's been a good and interesting day. Thank you St. Louis for your hospitality and see you soon Detroit! |
