Manhattan Rage Draft Review (×2)
#1

MONTREAL -- The Manhattan Rage got right back to work on the campaign trail for their next championship this offseason at the Season 53 SHL Entry Draft. The reigning Challenge Cup Champions took only three prospects, though they all look to be quality acquisitions who should develop nicely with another round or two of seasoning in juniors. We'll break down their rookie seasons in the SMJHL, their builds at the time of writing, and how they might get along in the current scheme of things in New York City.

With the 10th pick of the SHL Draft, the Edmonton Blizzard traded their pick to the Manhattan Rage for MAN's 1st-round pick this season (16th) and their 1st next season. The Rage selected...

Jukka Timonen
Defenseman, Newfoundland Berserkers

S52 SMJHL Regular Season (50 games, 21.67 MPG): 10 G, 11 A, -7, 24 PIM, 32 Hits, 61 SOG, 47 SB
S52 SMJHL Postseason (10 games, 23.04 MPG): 4 G, 3 A, -2, 8 PIM, 17 Hits, 11 SOG, 11 SB

A two-way defenseman from Finland, Timonen was eighth in scoring among rookies last regular season. He provided good support on the front and back foot for the Berserkers, something his SimonT build lent to with a score-first mentality from the blue line. His FHM build suggests more of the same, with a bit of rounding out on passing and puckhandling on offense and investing training in physical abilities as well. His time with the Finnish Juniors has not been as smooth, though he plays with much more offense-minded peers in internationals.

Timonen seems the type of defenseman who will pair well with a partner who can hold things down while he joins the middle in a 1-3-1 as well as provide some aggressive, counterattack-minded support in 2-D formations. He's come along nicely so far and has the makings of a rising star, well worth trading up to snatch. With the timing, if his growth keeps up, he would help smooth the franchise's transition away from an aging Reginald MacIntyre..

With the 27th pick of the SHL Draft, the Manhattan Rage selected...

Hiroshi Ohira
Right Winger, Colorado Raptors

S52 SMJHL Regular Season (50 games, 10.45 MPG): 3 G, 2 A, -12, 15 PIM, 24 Hits, 44 SOG, 4 SB
S52 SMJHL Postseason (6 games, 12.39 MPG): 0 G, 0 A, -4, 0 PIM, 5 Hits, 8 SOG, 0 SB

An offensive forward from Japan, Ohira saw little ice time in the Raptor lines. He made a bit of it during the regular season, though he will need some time to develop in juniors.

Having a look over his build, his physical abilities are solid. He will need work on his shooting range and accuracy if he is to fill a goal-scoring role in Colorado and, eventually, Manhattan. He lends himself more to a setup man role. If that's what he decides he wants to be, that would be fine. He could find a place setting up a more dedicated scorer. We'll have a look during his second season with the Raptors for a progress report later. This looks like a pick that could be a late bloomer, and that may be what the GM is looking at in this one.

With the 32nd pick of the SHL Draft, the Calgary Dragons traded their pick (originally MAN's) to the Manhattan Rage for MAN's 2nd-round pick in S56 UNLESS that is a Reddit draft. If it is, CAL receives that pick in S57. The Rage selected...

Santtu Räsänen
Center, Anchorage Armada

S52 SMJHL Regular Season (46 games, 16.42 MPG): 3 G, 6 A, 49.68% FO wins of 785 taken, -28, 12 PIM, 41 Hits, 51 SOG, 3 SB
S52 SMJHL Postseason (6 games, 16.65 MPG): 0 G, 2 A, 41.67% FO wins of 108 taken, Even, 0 Hits, 2 SOG, 2 SB

A two-way forward from Finland, Räsänen provides decent support along both ends of the ice with balance across offensive and defensive skills and physical abilities. His faceoff percentage looks promising with some time to get better on the draw.

To his build, it looks like he's keeping an open mind as to what he could be most useful as. That's a good approach and one that, with more training and development, will make him more moldable into the Rage lines later. A bit more physical presence would help in faceoffs and in bridging the gap between offense and defense. Solid pickup for the Rage, even considering the draft pick traded to move up.

Final Thoughts

The Rage took in this draft a clear-cut future star and two decent picks who will need more time to make such aspirations happen. This Draft felt like an average run - a shortlist of clear choices, a midrange of hit-or-miss takes, and inactives at the rear. The Rage took advantage of the midrange of overlooked potential, though it would be no great loss if they don't develop as the team would hope. A lot more rides on Timonen breaking out with a significant part of the future mortgaged on him. The champions are already committing to their mission of keeping focused on maintaining their place while they can as everyone now looks to get better and take them down, and it starts with this Draft.

"Took only 3 prospects"

That's the most prospects we've drafted in a season for the past three!
