Elwulf Jericson Pre-Season Preparations

Since being drafted, Elwulf Jericson has been working hard to get into shape for the eventual beginning to the pre-season. Coming out of training camp, he decided there were a few things he wanted to work on in order to help out the team. This article will be the first of potentially many throughout the season on his progress. Enjoy.

Going into training camp and meeting his teammates, Elwulf was excited to get started and make an impact. The first few days were off-ice workouts, which he was comfortable in. He was not necessarily the strongest in the gym but he was able to keep up, especially in the agility testing.

When it came time for the on-ice practices, he was informed that he would be practicing on the 3rd pairing. These would give him sheltered minutes to be able to adjust to the speed of the game and the needs of his team. He was ecstatic to just be a part of the team and take any opportunity that he could.

When it came time for shooting practice, he realized he had a lot to learn. The few shots he took went wide of the net. Even some of his passes were missing the mark. When things changed to defense he did better, but still had some work to do. His positioning was sound, even against teammates, but he wasn't able to move many people. Instead, he relied heavily on his stick work to be able to stop the offense. He knew he wasn't going to be as good as the veterans of the team, but he strived to be able to keep up with them. After all, they wouldn't be in the SMJHL for too many more years. He could already tell some of them were good enough to play in the big leagues.

Throughout the week, he checked in with his coaches for tips and guidance on where to improve. They seemed to like his speed and using that on defense. Now he needed to get a little better on offense to take advantage of being on the 3rd pair. He worked tirelessly on trying to make sure he would hit the net, rather than the side boards. During drills, he focused more on tape-to-tape passes as well.

As the first pre-season game loomed, he hoped that he had prepared enough. He knew this would be his first test to see how he can perform. Sitting in the locker room with his teammates, he looked around and saw winners. Now he just had to prove he belonged with them.
