Tylar Reflects on SHL and Former Players

PSA: Some of my facts may be wrong, and I am sorry if I forgot to mention any friends that are still on here that I met along the way. I grew up with a lot of y’all and have made a lot of good friends that have come and gone. Love y’all <3. SHL has been a big part of my life really (sad, lol). Back when I joined I was pretty overweight, shy and SHL was kind of an outlet to kind of be myself and enjoy myself (I went from Habbo Hotel to SHL basically – YIKES). Since then I have completed many life milestones with my SHL friends by my side. I have met so many good people and having people in my life like Harry has been  amazing so, : pepelove :

another psa: I to lazy to tag everyone I mentioned, so sorry.

Jacob Mueller
If I remember correctly, I found SHL via HFBoard post. With Mueller I joined SHL near the trade deadline of Season 5. I created my player and waited. I got approved by Hoggie, and continued to wait, multiple days. Eventually, I messaged Hoggie who was the NWJHL commissioner at the time, and asked what I was supposed to do, because no GM contacted me. I believe, Fisher who was the GM of the Prince George Firebirds at the time, ended up signing me in the middle of S5 after Hoggie did some work to get someone to sign me. I was on that Prince George team with the likes of Fisher, Witzel, JP, Lem, and likely others I know of but cannot remember. I do not really remember much because this would have been in mid-2011, which I would have been like 15 years old. If it was not for Hoggie, I probably would not even be on SHL today. I ended up deciding to recreate and have the full SHL experience of getting drafted into the NWJHL with advice from Hoggie. Hoggie was a really good commissioner who helped me a lot back then.

Julien Dupont (name change – Alexei Grigorenko yikes)
With Dupont, I googled Belgian names and ended up putting these two names together, but I still like the sounds of it even today. I remember back in the day, IIHF was fun and I believe I was trying to be on team Europe (I was also in like a FIFA stage, and therefore enjoyed looking for Belgian players in career mode player academy prospects). Julien Dupont is probably my biggest success story on SHL and the most fun I have had on SHL (sim/hockey wise). I ended up going 20th to the Prince George Firebirds where I was already familiar with some of the people there like my good friend JP. There were also people like Lem, Winter, and others who made the experience fun. After going hard doing articles and such, I ended up getting drafted by the Edmonton Comets with Seth as general manager. That was another good team that ended up having members like Harry, Tez, Toast, Jaywhy, Wadeyb, and others (Sorry if I missed anyone). Seth was a pretty controversial GM at that time with people wondering what the hell he was doing half the time, but he collected a bunch of great people. It was a lot of fun back in those days. Dupont only lasted like 3 seasons with the Comets as I believe I ended up asking out of Edmonton in S9 to play for a contender. I got traded to the Calgary Dragons and went on to win my first Challenge Cup in S9 with Calgary. At this point I decided to for whatever reason spend money to do a name change to Alexei Grigorenko (YIKES) because as a fan of the Sabres, I was excited during the 2012 draft (hindsight, lmao), and yeah… embarrassing. Near the end of my tenure with Dupont/Grigorenko (yikes), I started to become super indecisive and borderline whiny and decided to recreate (I probably should have kept Dupont a little longer). At this point around S12 I believe the Crew started to form on chatzy and I ended up being a part of the core members of the crew. At this point, I had some amazing friends, that I would still call my friends today and still talk to like Harry and JP who are probably my best friends on the site, and other friends like bird who is one of my favorite professional gamers. I lost touch with a few like Tez, and Toast but have recently talked to them again and it is like back in the ole days. Some people I was really close with, specifically the Crew members that I have not talked to in a while like Dpark, Wadey, lem, O4L, and many others which most are gone but some are still around.

Rufus Reinhart
Rufus Reinhart was created because I was into the name Rufus and Reinhart because of Sam Reinhart. I do not know why I had an obsession with naming my players after Sabres but whatever. With Rufus, I was basically full involved in the cult of crew, causing havoc around the league. It was honestly pretty fun for the most part, as I was never really directly involved, I was just kind of egging on in the background and laughing. My friend group pretty much stayed the same on chatzy, and this is when chatzy was really popular on SHL and started taking over SHL locker rooms, and discussions on the forum were down because everyone was in chatzy’s. Someone even paid for crew to have the premium chatzy (haha, good times). Rufus ended up being a second overall pick in Kelowna in Season 12 and a fourth overall pick of the West Kendall Platoon in Season 13. I do not believe I ever played for the Platoon with Reinhart, as I got traded to the Texas Renegades which I believe were a fairly new franchise and that is when the Crew group really took off with Wadey as GM. The beginning of Rufus Reinhart was probably the most enjoyable social wise for me on SHL. I spent a lot of time on chatzy, playing games, I believe we did like skype voice calls once in a while (I think???). We had the core group of people and would bring people in (like O4L, and some others). In S14 I won my second Challenge Cup with Texas. Shortly after, I did not really update that much, got traded to Minnesota, if I remember correctly. That is where I met the likes of people like Sweg, HFFO, and I cannot remember the rest. I feel like I also ended up in Hamilton at one point and ended up back in Texas again. With Reinhart I tested free agency once or twice because I was indecisive and kind of needy (yikes). Overall Reinhart was a pretty successful player, but was kind of just mediocre, did not ever really put up a lot of points except one season. I believe I got nominated for the most improved player with Reinhart, and that is the closest I have been to getting an award in SHL.

Christoffer Bjornsson
With Bjornsson I decided to try being a goalie, and I believe one of the things I was going for originally was being a rival of Toast’s goalie Broadway. Toast got drafted to Halifax Raiders and I was on the Kelowna Knights. I got drafted onto a stacked Kelowna Knights team with lots of send downs with HFFO as general manager (I think?). I ended up winning my one and only (so far) Four Star Cup as a rookie goaltender. I got drafted 16th overall to the Los Angeles Panthers. I think I played a season as a backup with them possibly? (got sent down after 6 games played). I do not remember ever playing for them, as I had a falling out with Wasty and Bottas and got myself traded I think to Texas, which I had no problem with at the time (Or I somehow ended up in Texas at some point with Wadey again, and the new studmuffin on the block Dankoa, I think). In S26, I won my first and only individual award as I won the Tom Corcoran Trophy for Top SMJHL Goalie. My career with Bjornsson started off great, then after that, he was kind of just mediocre. I did not really enjoy being a goalie at all for some reason. I kind of just coasted with Bjornsson and kind of just gave up. I kind of just became a place holder goaltender for teams that had a prospect in juniors. I did not really win much other than in juniors. The good things that came out of Bjornsson would have been becoming friends with the likes of Dankoa, Allen, Justice, Wiki, and I am sure others. This period of time is when discord started to phase out chatzy due to the limits chatzy put on people in chat. I was able to be exposed to more members instead of my usual crew members and met a lot of other wonderful individuals.
- I somehow forgot about being on Portland with JP and Wally. That was pretty fun time as well.

Sami Owens
Sami Owens I named after my two favorite wrestlers Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens (haha, I still like the name though). I ended up going 20th overall to the Kelowna Knights again in Season 35 (My junior career has been so boring, only Prince George and Kelowna, haha). I got drafted to Hamilton 9th overall who had Hallsy as General manager. This team kind of reminded me of the Comets. I got drafted with like Nour, QC and they had people like Gooney, teddy, waters, and more. It was a pretty fun time for me socially as well, and Sami was pretty average at best as well. I ended up getting a few IIHF Medals out of Sami with Canada and my third Challenge Cup in S51 with Hamilton which was great. I believe I left Hamilton, and ended up coming back at some point but I cannot for the life of me remember and do not feel like researching. Nevermind, I decided to research, I got traded to New England, then from New England to Manhattan. From Manhattan to Chicago. Then Chicago signed me as an Inactive free-agent contract, then I believe I went to UFA, and hallsy contacted me to sign for Hamilton again as depth. Wow, I actually traveled a lot with Owens, more than I thought. I got over 1000 TPE with Owens and basically gave up. He lasted quite awhile getting hit with regression. I believe he is still around 500 tpe today after being retired. Sami Owens was not super successful on the ice. Basically a second pairing defenseman, kind of like a Zach Bogosian in his prime type. Not super good. The only statistic Sami Owens was good at was shots block which made him somewhat useful in fantasy as a late-round defenseman pick. Getting a cup out of Sami is nice though, on a stacked Hamilton team before switching sims. Near the middle of my time with Sami, I began being closer friends with the likes of Flem, and Bird along with my original crew members and Texas people old and some of the new ones who are all pretty cool.

Liam Slate
Well, with the quarantine being on, I was pretty bored and have a lot more free time. I kind of debated if I wanted to recreate since most of my friends still had players on SHL. Some do not though like, Allen, Flem, Harry but I figured I would maybe give it another shot. As I began to get closer to the trade deadline, I got more excited to do it. I figured why not, as thus far (like not even a week into Slate being created) I am excited to be on SHL again. I have written like three articles, and four included this one, as well as two articles I am waiting to post. With the change in sim engines, and other factors I want to try again. I want to finally, hopefully, build a superstar player who produces points (hopefully) but ideally I kind of just want win championships and maybe a few awards. With Slate I want to actually try and build a really good player. I am looking forward to the SMJHL draft whenever that comes in the next month, and kind of going through the whole SHL experience again. I feel like I have the drive, bank account, and desire to do it all over again. I have also been talking to some people like JNH, Rindiee,Toast, Dankoa, Justice and they have been getting me excited again for SHL.

Anyways, this was kind of a long article of just me reflecting on my SHL experience and former players. IT was fun thinking back, and I missed so many things including massive events, drama, etc. But it is always fun to reflect back to the original SHL days, and it is crazy to see how much SHL has grown and changed. I only knew like 3 of the teams in the SMJHL when I went to create Slate. I remember when there were only 6 and 8 SMJHL teams. Anyways thanks to everyone who is still on the site that I have interacted with, and hopefully I will be able to interact with more while I build Slate.

It is hard to believe I have been on this site for almost 10 years.

Welcome back, Ty. Jedi was the Kelowna GM who drafted you on Bjornsson, but that was so long ago I don't blame you for not remembering. That was a fun season.

I'm glad I was able to he your first ever GM here, and I'm glad it spawned a beautiful friendship

We have been together a lot all the way. From PGF in S6, to Crew, to Edmonton, to Portland, to Texas, to Hamilton. You have probably been one of my most consistent teammates lol. We always end up together

And I love it
