Cal Labovitch – Game by game report (regular season edition)

Against all odds, and to everyone’s surprise, the Detroit Falcons ended up in first place over the 50 game regular season and got to lift the Laurifer trophy. Unfortunately, they lost to the St. Louis Scarecrows in the playoffs. They did it carrying two full lines of rookies and with a rookie goaltender though, and Detroit fanbase will be excited to see what the new season will bring for the Falcons.

Coming off of a very hot S52 season, Cal Labovitch was excited to showcase his talents in the SMJHL season 53. He trained hard in the off-season with his teammates, and saw everyone one of these talented kids grow into great assets for any SMJHL team. A few new rookies were picked up as well, including a new rookie backup goalie. The Minnesota Chiefs had send him down for the upcoming season again, and he was determined to help the Falcons in their run for the cup as good as he could. Beign one of the older players in the room, his teammates and the Falcons staff had picked him as one of their captains for the season, a job Cal was more than willing to pick up. Most of his teammates didn’t need a lot of captaining and rallying anyway, they were perfectly capable of holding their own both on and off the ice.

But how did the season go for Cal and his Falcons? Let’s take a look at the games:

Game 1: Carolina Kraken (Away)

The Falcons won their opening game 7 – 2, and Cal picked up first point of the season on an assist. Cal plays as a setup man this season, on a line with Kaarlo Kekkonen and Teddy Williams. Cal’s job is to move the puck to his linemates and feed them assists. He played a little over 18 and a half minute this game, playing on the first line and as part of the power play unit for the Falcons. Defensively he contribution wasn’t really fantastic, but because of his strong offensive play and the big win nobody really cared. It didn’t cause any real problems defensively anyway, and Cal recorded a positive +/- rating anyway.

Goals: 0                Assists: 1              Points: 1

+/-: +1                  TOT: 18:34          PIM: 0

Game 2: Maine Timber (Home)

The Falcons won their second game, and home opener 3 - 1, with their rookie backup goalie picked as the starter fo this game. Cal played a little over 19 minutes this game, playing on the first line and as part of the power play unit for the Falcons. Despite playing in his role as a setup man, Cal banged two pucks past the opposing goaltender on only three shots on goal. Defensively he contribution wasn’t really fantastic, but because of his strong offensive play and the big win nobody really cared.

OGR: 78              DGR: 56                GR: 67

Goals: 2                Assists: 0              Points: 2

+/-: 0                    TOT: 19:02          PIM: 0

Game 3: Anchorage Armada (Home)

In a significantly closer game than the first two. The Falcons took the lead in the first, but saw the boats tie the game in the second, and even take a two goal lead in the third perio. Three goals in less than two minutes by the Falcons turned it around halfway through the third period though and the Falcons kept the points where they belong. The last two goals were both scored by Teddy Williams, and assisted by Kaarlo Kekkonen. They were scored just a little over 30 seconds apart.

Cal didn’t get himself on the scoresheet, but managed to put up some decent offensive numbers anyway and finished the game on a +1 rating. In his 20 minutes of ice time, he did contribute to the Falcons defensive efforts and recorded two take aways, a team high.

OGR: 64              DGR: 77                GR: 72

Goals: 0                Assists: 0              Points: 0

+/-: +1                  TOT: 20:17          PIM: 0

Game 4: Newfoundland Bersekers (Away)

After the close game against Anchorage, the Falcons faced an easier opponent again. Teddy Williams opened the score in the 4th minute with an even-strength goal, and scored again on the only power play of the period, less than 90 seconds later. Jmac NCheese made it 3-0 late in the second period, before Teddy completed his hattrick on his second power play goal of the night. An even strength goal from Cal Labovitch put the final 5-0 score on the scoreboard.

Cal got himself on the scoresheet twice this game, recording both a goal and an assist. He had a good game on both ends of the ice, putting up a solid defensive performance as well, and finished the game on a +2 rating. He spent18 minutes out on the ice, almost 6 of which were on the power play.

OGR: 78              DGR: 75                GR: 78

Goals: 1                Assists: 1              Points: 2

Game 5: Carolina Kraken (Away)

Game 5 sees the Falcons returning to Carolina for their second game of the season against the Kraken. The Falcons won their first confrontation  7 – 2 and while this game had a much closer scoreline, the Falcons managed to record another solid win and continue their unbeaten run.

Just like in Detroit’s last game, Cal had a solid game. With a goal and two assists, in 21 minutes of ice time, he was an offensive wreckingball. Credit should partly go to Kaarlo Kekkonen, Cal’s linemate, who scored two goals and had an assist, showing the offensive strength of this line.

OGR: 90              DGR: 65                GR: 78

Goals: 1                Assists: 2              Points: 3

+/-: +1                  TOT: 21:17          PIM: 0

Game 6: Vancouver Whalers (Away)

In their third game on the road in a row, the Detroit Falcons show no signs of fatigue or stress from being away from their homes. Just like in the previous two road games, the Detroit Falcons dominate out on the ice. They beat the Vancouver Whalers 6-1, despite trailing by one after the first period. Their unbeaten run to start the season lives another day.

Despite not getting himself on the scoreboard, Cal had a decent game offensively. He somewhat neglected the defensive tasks assigned to him, but Vancouver was in no position to capitalize on that. Kaarlo Kekkonen and Teddy Williams didn’t get a single point either, which is quite rare for the season so far.

OGR: 72              DGR: 57                GR: 65

Goals: 0                Assists: 0              Points: 0

+/-: +1                  TOT: 18:08          PIM: 0

Game 7: St Louis Scarecrows (Home)

The first game of the season against their long time rivals, and the Detroit Falcons get to take them on in front of their home crowd. A quick penalty against, Cal’s former Minnesota prospect teammate, Danny Marston for the Scarecrows put the Falcons on the powerplay and they made excellent use of it. It was Cal Labovitch himself who pulled the trigger after Kaarlo Kekkonen and Edward Williams did the preparatory work. Just 40 seconds later, Luke McMaster doubled the lead to two. And the Falcons would go on to score a third goal in the first period. The Scarecrows somewhat recovered in the second period, and their first line found their way to the Falcons net once, but an empty net goal for the Falcons late in the third sealed it. Falcons win the first battle of the birds for this season, and beat the Scarecrows 4-1.

Cal had a solid start to the game, converting a penalty by his friend Danny Marston into a powerplay goal. He focused more on the defensive side of his role for the rest of the game, showing a great improvement in that area compared to last game.

OGR: 68              DGR: 70                GR: 70

Goals: 1                Assists: 0              Points: 1

+/-: +0                  TOT: 17:58          PIM: 0

Game 8: Newfoundland Berserkers (Home)

After taking a 5-0 beating in their previous confrontation in Newfoundland, the Berserkers came to Detroit to take on the Falcons with a changed game plan. It where the Falcons who took the lead three times in this game, but the Berserkers managed to even it up the first two times. They did not have an answer to the Falcons lead 15 seconds before the end of the game though, and the Falcons got away with the full points for this win. 8 games played, 8 wins for the Falcons.

Cal had an invisible game, both offensively and defensively. His line allowed a goal, and didn’t manage to put up anything in return. A game to forget real fast.

OGR: 56              DGR: 62                GR: 50

Goals: 0                Assists: 0              Points: 0

+/-: -1                  TOT: 19:16          PIM: 0

Game 9: Anchorage Armada (Away)

By many seen as the first real test for the Detroit Falcons team, since the Anchorage Armada are leading the other conference after 8 games, and their first line center Mitchell van der Heijden is on fire and seems to be one of the only players in the league able to keep up with Edward Williams. After 20 minutes of game time, the Boats were leading the game by 2. The referee let a lot of small infractions on both sides slip, and a dispute over a late hit and a non-call by the referee lead to a second period fight between Detroit’s star player Edward Williams, and the Armada’s defenseman Lando Norris. 3 minutes before the end of the third period, it looked like the Falcons were going to fly back home pointless, but two goals in less than a minute evened the score and sent the game into overtime. The overtime went scoreless and the Boats got luckier in the shootout lottery, breaking the Falcons’ win-streak.

Cal Labovitch was once again unable to score, or be effective in another capacity on the offensive side of the ice. But he did more than his part on the defensive side. He spent over 23 minutes out on the ice, and will be disappointed with his offensive contribution  and looking to get himself back on the scoresheet again next game.

OGR: 65              DGR: 58                GR: 70

Goals: 0                Assists: 0              Points: 0

+/-: +0                  TOT: 23:36          PIM: 0

Game 10: Kelowna Knights (Away)

Part one of a three game series against the Kelowna Knights for the Falcons, the first one taking place in Kelowna. And after the shootout loss to the Anchorage Armada, the Falcons are looking to pick it up again and get right back up on their horse with a few wins. Kelowna didn’t do much in this game to keep the Detroit team from their goal, and the Falcons cruised to an easy 5-1 win.

Despite getting his name on the scoresheet again by picking up an assist on Detroit’s 4th goal, Cal wasn’t happy with how the game turned out for him. Apart from the assist, he wasn’t very effective or involved offensively, and he dropped the ball on a couple of defensive plays as well.

OGR: 63              DGR: 57                GR: 60

Goals: 0                Assists: 1              Points: 1

+/-: -1                  TOT: 16:33          PIM: 0

Game 11: Kelowna Knights (Home)

The second of three games against Kelowna takes place in Detroit. And once again, it’s the Falcons who walk away with the big win. After 60 minutes of game time, the score is 7-1 in favour of the home team.

Cal Labovitch had another good defensive game, without any real offensive impact. However, his line was able to score twice and while he wasn’t recorded as an assist, his effort did have some influence on the plays made. There’s no doubt this negative offensive streak will end soon, and Cal will take control of the offensive end of the game again.

OGR: 61              DGR: 80                GR: 75

Goals: 0                Assists: 0              Points: 0

+/-: +2                  TOT: 19:34          PIM: 0

Game 12: Kelowna Knights (Home)

Third game in a row against the Kelowna Knights, and both team have opted to go with their backup goalie for this one. And both of them did pretty well. The game ended in a 2-0 win for the Detroit Falcons, with Thor Odinson picking up the shutout for the home team and Brayden Ennis only allowing 2 goals on 39 shots faced. The game was played after 7 minutes, with both goals already scored by then. After facing off against either three games in a row, both teams will be happy to take on another team for their next game.

This game saw Cal Labovitch taking a rare trip to the penalty box, being assessed a minor penalty for hooking. His offensive positioning was good, and he set up his linemates with a few good scoring chances but they failed to convert them.

OGR: 72              DGR: 55                GR: 63

Goals: 0                Assists: 0              Points: 0

+/-: +0                  TOT: 18:08          PIM: 2

Game 13: Vancouver Whalers (Away)

In a crazy game, the Vancouver Whalers managed to snag the first real win from the Detroit Falcons. The Detroit Falcons put up 44 shots against 19 from the Whalers, and took a two goal lead by scoring twice in the 8th minute of the game, but still lost the game 5-3.

The trip home was very quiet, and nobody really knew what happened out there.

Cal’s offensive activity was up again, and he scored the second goal of the game. He posted 4 shots on goal in his 17 minutes out on the ice.

Game 14: Maine Timber (Home)

We don’t talk about this game.

OGR: 61              DGR: 75                GR: 68

Goals: 0                Assists: 0              Points: 0

Game 15: Colorado Raptors (Away)

The first of two road games in Colorado, and it wasn’t a very good one. The Detroit Falcons started off strong, with two unanswered first period goals, but kind of stopped showing up for the rest of the game. Newcomer Taisto Jutila scored his first goal early in the third to make sure the Falcons still got to walk away with the full points here.

Cal’s game was representative for the rest of the team: Mediocre at best. Both his linemates had a solid game, but the entire first line only got to go out onto the ice for 15 minutes this whole game. The limited icetime made it hard for them to get to their usual level and make an impact.

OGR: 65              DGR: 49                GR: 58

Game 16: Colorado Raptors (Away)

The second of the two games in Colorado, and the poor form continues. This time, the Raptors managed to take it all the way to the shootout and win it there, sending the Falcons back home with a bit of a hangover.

Individually, Cal didn’t have a terrible game. Defensively, there’s nothing his coach can hold against him and offensively he contributed with an assist on the one goal the Falcons scored in this game.

OGR: 66              DGR: 85                GR: 76

Goals: 0                Assists: 1              Points: 1

+/-: -1                  TOT: 17:26          PIM: 0

Game 17: Maine Timber (Home)

After losing to the Vancouver Whalers, the dreadful game 14 against the Maine Timber at home, and their two terrible games in Colorado, the Detroit Falcons are determined to turn it around and end their bad streak right here. Kaarlo Kekkonen showed everyone in the arena the first line still has it by scoring a power play goal, two seconds into their first power play of the game. And despite the Maine coming back to a two goal difference in the third period, the Falcons’ lead was never in any real danger.

Cal picked up an assist on the opening goal, but that’s pretty much all he did in this entire game. Somebody go talk to this guy and try to get his head back on, because he can certainly do better than this.

OGR: 65              DGR: 46                GR: 56

+/-: +0                  TOT: 15:01          PIM: 0

Game 18: St Louis Scarecrows (Home)

The Scarecrows once again visit Detroit for a rivalry game. The Falcons can take this opportunity to show their critics they’ve recovered from their performance dip and the top spot in the conference and league is theirs and theirs alone. However, it were the Scarecrows who managed to score the first goal of the game, five minutes into the first period. Before the end of the period, Frederick Wanesly had already pegged one back to even the score though, and for the rest of the game it would only be the Detroit Falcons who got their names written down on the scoresheet. The Scarecrows left Detroit with their heads down, after the 4-1 victory for Detroit. They will get their rematch in a just a few days though, since the Detroit Falcons will host the St Louis Scarecrows three times in a series of five games.

No points, or other on-ice presence for captain Cal again. He’s still being played on the power play, but his icetime was down into the 15 minutes again, and he was pretty invisible both offensively as well as defensively again.

OGR: 55              DGR: 41                GR: 59

Game 19: Anaheim Outlaws (Home)

The other two games in this five game series will be between the Detroit Falcons and the Anaheim Outlaws. The first game will be played in Detroit, and it’s the first time this season these two teams meet. The first period goes by without either team giving away too many opportunities for the other team to score. Detroit wants to leave their dip in performance behind them and doesn’t want to take the risk of the Outlaws getting an early lead, while the Outlaws have seen the havoc the Falcons’ offense can cause and want to play it safe.

In the second period, it’s defenseman Magnus Liljestrom who finds the opening first, and another Falcons’ defenseman, Guy O’Shea, who doubles the lead to 2. Anaheim will have to go on the offensive in the third period to salvage something from this game, but the Falcons take advantage and score another two before the Outlaws can get their consolation goal in.

Cal Labovitch’s line was once again not very productive. Edward Williams managed to grab an assist, but both Kaarlo Kekkonen and Cal Labovitch didn’t get a point. We can attribute this more to bad luck, than to bad play though, as the whole line posted decent rating both offensively and defensively.

OGR: 65              DGR: 64                GR: 65

Goals: 0                Assists: 0              Points: 0

+/-: +0                  TOT: 17:58          PIM: 0

Game 20: St. Louis Scarecrows (Home)

The second of the three game series, and after the Falcons won the first game 4-1, they’ll be looking to keep the points in this one home as well. Thor Odinson takes the net for the Falcons, and on the opposite side of the ice it’s Elizabeth Doyle in the net. The Falcons ran into 3 penalties in the first period, two of which were caused by Jack Kanoff, but they took the lead on a short handed attempt by Frederick Wanesly. Even-strength goals by Justin Womack, Cal Labovitch and Cassidy Lhotsky put them up by four before the Scarecrows could respond in the third period. If that goal gave them hope, Frederick Wansely crushed it not much later as he put the 5-1 final score on the scoreboard. Game 2 of 3 goes to the Falcons, who continue their unbeaten run against their rivals and definitely look like they have recovered from their short dip.

Despite scoring the third goal of the game, Cal Labovitch wasn’t really happy about the game. In an interview to the local newspaper he was quoted as saying “The goal was on a lucky shot, and it was also the only shot on net I took all game. My passes weren’t really connecting like they should, and I found myself out of position in our defensive end a couple of times. I can’t blame the coach for keeping me on the bench more than in our usual games, as I just wasn’t there when I had to be.”

OGR: 58              DGR: 58                GR: 59

Goals: 1                Assists: 0              Points: 1

+/-: +1                  TOT: 12:43          PIM: 0

Game 21: Anaheim Outlaws (Away)

In between the St Louis series, the Falcons will once again face-off against the Anaheim Outlaws. This time, they’re visiting the City of Anaheim (and not just for Disneyland). The home game a few days ago was won by the Falcons, and they’ll be keen to repeat that here and extend their win streak. The first period saw the Falcons picking up the lead, through a goal by Frederick Wanesly, but it looked like Anaheim had the Falcons under control despite trailing by one after 20 minutes. However, the Falcons came back from their dressing room with fire in their eyes and the Falcons’ first line decided to start connecting again right from the puckdrop. 33 seconds into the period, Edward Williams had converted on an early penalty, and only 4 minutes later Cal Labovitch brought the lead to three. Pooks Halloway managed to peg one back for the Outlaws, but goals by Frederick Wanesly, Cal Labovitch and Jmac NCheese for Detroit and Ethan Price for Anaheim followed in the third period, leading to a 6-2 score in favour of the Falcons.

Scoring two goals, including the game winning goal, and giving an assist in one game was a feat we haven’t seen from Cal Labovitch much yet this season. He had a pretty solid game, and seems to have taken the criticism he got after his last few games to heart. He was named first star for the game, and was definitely the star player for the Falcons he strives and wants to be.

OGR: 91              DGR: 62                GR: 77

Goals: 2                Assists: 1              Points: 3

+/-: +2                  TOT: 17:53          PIM: 0

Game 22: St. Louis Scarecrows (Home)

The last of three home games in close succession, and the last home game of the season against the St. Louis Scarecrows. After winning the first two pretty convincingly, the Detroit Falcons will step onto the ice with the confidence they can win this third one as well and extend their win streak to  6 games. Detroit’s first line makes the Falcons’ intentions pretty clear from the opening faceoff, and with just 35 seconds played defenseman Guy O’Shea hammers an assist from Edward Williams home for the 1-0 lead. The St. Louis Scarecrows are nowhere to be seen for the first two periods, and Frederick Wanesly (2-0 and 3-0) and Kaarlo Kekkonen run up the score to 4-0. The third period isn’t much different, and it takes two more goals from Falcons’ players before the Scarecrows manage to put one past the Detroit goalie. With three seconds to go, Kekkonen converts another assist by Edward Williams for the 7-1 final score. The Detroit Falcons have won all four home games against their Scarecrows rival and will be looking forward to continue this trend in the four away games later this season.

Cal Labovitch continues with another solid performance. Directly involved in the 4-0 with an assist, he was out on the ice distributing pucks and setting up dangerous plays on most of his shifts. If he can keep up this form he should still be able to break into the top 10 for any of the points scoring tables.

OGR: 72              DGR: 67                GR: 70

Game 23: Newfoundland Berserkers (Home)

Another double header at home for the Detroit Falcons, as the Newfoundland Berserkers come around for a double visit. And in this first of two games, the Berserkers take the lead in the first period. Jmac NCheese ties it early in the second, but the Berserkers smell blood and a chance of success here and halfway through the second period the Detroit Falcons are trailing by one again. A power play goal by Edward Williams ties it a few minutes later again though, and before the end of the second period Guy O’Shea scored Detroit’s third, giving them the lead for the first time this game. In the third period, the Falcons’ controlled the play, leading to a fourth goal to secure a 4-2 win at home over the Newfoundland Berserkers.

A solid game by Cal Labovitch, who showed he’s an asset both on the offence and defence when he’s on top of his game. Even though he didn’t get his name on the scoresheet himself, his playmaking skills caused a lot of trouble for the Berserkers in their defensive zone and he was a nuisance for the Newfoundland goalie with 9 shots at goal taken.

Game 24: Newfoundland Berserkers (Home)

Very much aware of how their previous game started, the Falcons’ started out much, much stronger on this second game against the Newfoundland Berserkers. In less than a minute,  they had found the way to the Newfoundland net and past their goalie, and a second goal halfway through the first saw them take a comfortable lead early this time. The second period was more of the same, with once again an early goal for the Falcons and a second goal later in the period.  And despite the Berserkers giving it a desperate last try in the third, their goal was answered by two more Falcons’ goals and the game ended in a 6-1 win for the home team.

Cal had another solid offensive performance. He was one the ice for three of the six goals scored, including his own goal early in the second period and the chemistry with Edward Williams and Kaarlo Kekkonen is really starting to show. Defensively this game didn’t really require him to show his presence, but there’s no doubt he’ll chip in there when needed as well.

Game 25: Carolina Kraken (Home)

The Detroit Falcons end the first half of the season with another home game, this time facing off against the Carolina Kraken. Detroit has won 22 of their first 24 games, and are at 44 points in 25 games.  The Kraken are on the opposite end of the league table, with only 6 wins in regulation and 14 points. Yet, it’s the Kraken who take the lead in the first period and despite heavily outshooting them, the Falcons can’t seem to find a way past Frans Eller in the Carolina net. Whether it’s a solid defensive effort by Carolina, or just bad shooting by the Falcons, it takes the Detroit team 64 shots to score two goals in this game and secure the narrow 2-1 win. A disappointing game overall for the Falcons and the Detroit fans, despite the result.

Offensively, Cal Labovitch did everything right. His four shots didn’t go in, but he set up his teammates with plenty of chances and showed of his tremendous playmaking skills. Defensively he could’ve done better, as that first period Carolina goal fell on his watch.

Game 26: St. Louis Scarecrows (Away)

The Detroit Falcons start the second half of the season with an away game, and their opponent for this game is none other than their rival: St. Louis Scarecrows. After winning all four home games against the Scarecrows earlier this season, and ending the first half of the season firmly in first place in the league, the Detroit Falcons travel to St. Louis with confidence. And that confidence show off right from the start of the game, as the Detroit falcons score twice in the first 20 minutes. St. Louis tries to force a come back in the second period, and manages to close the gap to one goal, but Zoltan Topalo and Kaarlo Kekkonen extend the lead even further and with 20 minutes to play the Falcons are up 4-1. St. Louis manages to score a last goal in the third period, but the Detroit Falcons walk away from this rivalry game with the full points and a 4-2 win, and knowing they’ll be returning here again in just two games.

Offensively, Cal Labovitch had a good start of the second half of the season.  He was indirectly involved in both the power play goal by Edward Williams and the second period goal by Kaarlo Kekkonen. Defensively he did a good job as well, despite being on the ice for both St Louis goals.

Game 27: Maine Timber (Home)

Hosting the Maine Timber in the Jet Blue Airways Arena, the Detroit Falcons are determined not to fall for the same mistakes as in their last game at home, against the Carolina Kraken. The players have been told not to get complacent, and to work hard and do their job out on the ice. The Maine Timber are not a powerhouse in the SMJHL,  and a slip up will not be tolerated by the Falcon GMs. The Detroit players really took this advice to heart and their first line set out to absolutely destroy the Maine Timber. 56 Shots were fired at the Timber goalie, and Edward Williams, Zoltan Topalo and Kaarlo Kekkonen all managed to find the net on 2 occassions. All their offensive effort left them a little vulnerable in defence at times, and the Maine Timber managed to score twice and bring the final score to 7-2 in favour of the Detroit Falcons. The 7th goal for the Flacons was scored by Luke McMaster, assisted by Burlok Sulfurgold and Cal Labovitch.

Cal had a stunning game, really showing off his passing skills and setting up his teammates in scoring positions. The young playmaker picked up four assists in this game, and his line racked up a total of 11 points.

Game 28: St. Louis Scarecrows (Away)

After that easy win in their home game against the Maine Timber, the Detroit Falcons are back in St. Louis for another rivalry game against the local Scarecrows. All five games between the two rivals have been won by the Detroit Falcons so far, and the Detroit players start this game off with the same style of play as their previous game, against the Timber. This leads to a very high scoring first period, in which the Falcons take a 3-0 lead before the St. Louis Scarecrows are able to somewhat rally their troops and score twice. Reid Sutherland makes it 4-2 in favour of the Falcons two seconds before the buzzer signals the end of the first period. What follows is a more conservative second period, in which not much happens after Zoltan Topalo’s goal with 47 seconds played. The third period has Detroit and St. Louis trade goals one more time, but the Scarecrows seem to have thrown in the towel and the Falcons are satisfied with their 6-3 win. This brings their win streak to 12 games.

Cal Labovitch picked up an assist, but otherwise played a rather sloppy and at times reckless game. We have definitely seen the young Swiss winger play better games this season, both offensively and defensively.

Game 29: Carolina Kraken (Away)

Frans Eller stopped 62 of the 64 shots fired at him in their last matchup, and the Detroit Falcons arrive in Carolina hoping to do better this time. The game starts out fine for the Falcons, with Dwight Knight being penalized for boarding after just 21 seconds played, and Jack Kanoff converting the first powerplay of the game into a goal. However, with just 22 seconds played in the seconds period, the Carolina Kraken manage to even the score. And despite a Kraken player being sent to the box for five minutes for an illegal check to the head of one of the Falcons, the Falcons are once again unable to beat Eller. And despite being heavily outshot, the Carolina Kraken manage to sneak one past Jobin for the 2-1 win with only 18 seconds left to play. A disheartening loss for the Falcons, who see their 12 game win streak abruptly ended.

Cal Labovitch wasn’t bad out there, but couldn’t make the difference, and his setup passes weren’t 100% accurate enough for his teammates to convert them to a goal. Frustrated about his passes not being converted into goals, Cal resorted to shooting at Eller himself. But his hopes of surprising him were in vain and none of his 5 shots hit home.

Game 30: Carolina Kraken (Home)

Right of the bat, it was pretty clear that the Detroit Falcons were not with their heads in the game. Ambacas Cuddles opened the score for the Kraken before the end of the first minute, and Velveteen Dream doubled the score 18 minutes later. The second period was even worse. The Falcons were playing like they were drunk and Carolina could run away to 5-0. The Detroit team woke up in the third period, but couldn’t get closer than a 5-2 loss. After massively outshooting the Kraken and putting up 64 shots on target last game, the Falcons could barely scrape together half of that in this absolutely terrible showing. Their GM reportedly left the Arena during the second intermission, and half of the arena didn’t even stay for the two Falcon goals in the third period.

There were three players out on the ice today who weren’t completely awful, and Labovitch was one of them. He was trying to set things up, and put his teammates in a position to score, but his linemates just weren’t there today.

Game 31: Newfoundland Berserkers (Away)

After the beating by the Carolina Kraken, Thor Odinson got his chance in the net again, versus the Newfoundland Berserkers. The whole team was on their toes for this one, not wanting to lose three in a row to teams in the bottom half of the league table. The first period was a bit nervous, Detroit didn’t create a lot of chances and was sloppy in it’s passing and shooting. Still, after 20 minutes they were leading the game 1-0. The second period started, and an entirely different team of Falcons took the ice. Passes connected. Shots hit their targets. Plays were made. It was beautiful. The result was 5 goals in 20 minutes, and a 6-0 lead. A late 3rd period goal by Edward Williams set the final score to 7-0 and Thor Odinson bagged another shutout.

Cal Labovitch had a huge part in this 7-0 win, being on the ice for 4 of the 7 Falcon goals, including the one he scored himself. Defensively this wasn’t a very challenging game, as the Newfoundland Berserkers were blown dead out of the water in the second period and couldn’t recover.

Game 32: Anaheim Outlaws (Home)

The Outlaws came to Detroit, assuming they were still recovering from the two lost games against the Colorado Kraken. However, the Falcons took the initiative in the first period, and defenseman Toki Wartooth scored the opening goal with 17 seconds left in the first period, assisted by Jmac NCheese and Guy O’Shea. Earlier in the period, the Falcons survived being two men down for almost two full minutes as Taisto Jutila and Cassidy Lhotsky both picked up a minor penalty within less than 30 seconds of each other. The Outlaws tied it early in the second period, and tied it again later in the period, after Jack Kanoff put the Falcons back in the lead. The third period was undeniably in favour of the Falcons though, as Cal Labovitch and Teddy Williams both picked up a goal for the 4-2 final score.

Scoring the game winning goal is always nice, and that’s exactly what Cal should take home from this game. His defensive work was a bit sub-par, but in the attacking zone he was pure genius today.

Game 33: St. Louis Scarecrows (Away)

Another rivalry night in St. Louis, where the Scarecrows will try to finally beat their nemesis. Thor Odinson had some good games this season, and is back in the net for the Falcons, while the Scarecrows opt for Richard Majors to try and keep the Detroit team from scoring. The first period went by scoreless, the most noteworthy part of it being a bit of pushing and shoving as Crow Alex Reyer shoved Detroit tendy Thor Odinson right before the end of the period. Despite the heat being turned up, only Reyer had to take a 2 minute break in the penalty box. Despite a few good attempts earlier, it would take until the 37th minute of the game before Teddy Williams, the league’s leader in points and PIMs, opened the score after being set up by Cal Labovitch. It was Laboviutch himself who extended that lead to two goals early in the third period, bagging another game winning goal. Mega Tron tried to close the gap with 5 minutes left in the third period, but an empty net goal by Guy O’Shea made an end to all of their hopes of a win over their rivals.

Cal Labovitch was voted the first star of the game, providing the assist for the opening goal by Teddy Williams, before scoring what turned out to be the game winning second goal of the game 2 minutes into the third period. His election was mostly based on outcome and result, and not so much on effort and style of play, as we have definitely seen better games from the playmaking winger.

Game 34: Newfoundland Berserkers (Away)

The second game in a three game road stretch, and the Falcons face off against the Berserkers again. After defeating them 7-0 a few games ago, the Falcons have gone on to deal with the Outlaws and Scarecrows in their last two games. This may have left the Falcons a bit tired, and allows the Berserkers  to take the lead in the second period. However; four third period goals by the Falcons, with 3 points for Zoltan Topalo, set the record straight and saw the Detroit team leaving the arena with the full 2 points.

Cal Labovitch had a laid back game, looking a bit tired out there. His offensive effort wasn’t great, although he managed to help his defense and goalie A Jobin to keep it pretty tight in the back.

Game 35: Maine Timber (Away)

Last game on the road before the Flacons get to play in their own arena again, and the Falcons run into another hot goalie. The Falcons manage to get two goals on the board halfway through the first period, but despite camping out in the Maine Timber defensive zone for pretty much the entire game and coming up with 47 shots on the Timber net, they can’t seem to get the puck past Olli Saarinen Jr after that. The Maine team can’t do much more than defending, throwing themselves in front of shots on more than one occasion, and only fire 6 pucks at the Detroit Falcons’ goalie this game. None of them manage to find a way into the net, and the game ends in 2-0.

Cal’s passing in the offensive zone was tremendous again. If it hadn’t been for the absolutely fantastic Olli Saarinen Jr in the Timber net, his teammates surely would’ve banged some of his passes home. Unfortunately, the game left him pointless.

Game 36: Colorado Raptors (Home)

Finally another game in front of the home crowd, and the Detroit Falcons welcome the Colorado Raptors back to the Jet Blue Airways Arena. It’s been a while since the two teams last met, and Colorado will have a lot better memories of the double header as they managed to et away with a win in their second of the two games. Determined to set the record straight, Frederick Wanesly hammers the first attempt he gets right home. It only took him 44 seconds to turn an assist by Jmac NCheese into the opening goal. However, Colorado tags on and ties it late in the first period. The Falcons start off strong again in the second period, with defenseman Guy O’Shea scoring his tenth goal of the season, and 4th liner Justin Womack with his fifth goal in 36 games. However, Colorado keeps the pressure on, and with two thirds of the game behind us the score is 3-2 in favour of the home team. Another strong start to the period is enough for the Falcons to keep the points at home though, as Jmac NCheese gets himself on the scoresheet one more time.

Cal Labovitch saw defenseman Guy O’shea turn another one of his tape-to-tape passes into a goal this game. The young setup man is starting to really grow into his role as playmaker, always looking for that final pass to give and for a teammate to get into a scoring position.

Game 37: Newfoundland Berserkers (Away)

With less than 15 games to go in the season, and a 30-4-2 record, the Detroit Falcons are wreaking havoc upon the league. Despite the odd misstep or fluke, most opponents are easily brushed aside and teams fear the black and red army from the very first drop of the puck. The Newfoundland Berserkers have found themselves on the losing end of every game against the Detroit Falcons so far, and today is no different. Jmac NCheese opened the score halfway on the power play through the first period for the Falcons. And despite the Berserkers returning the favour in the second period, the Falcons were never in any real danger of losing here and two third period goals were scored to take the two points home for the seventh game in a row.

Much like the rest of his team, Cal Labovitch took it easy this game. Pretty confident in their ability to win games even when not playing at their A level, the Swiss right winger stuck to the basics. He didn’t exactly create a lot of scoring opportunities for himself or his linemates, but at the same time didn’t give away a lot defensively either.

Game 38: Colorado Raptors (Home)

The Colorado Raptors seem to be one of the few teams with the on-ice ability to give the Falcons a run for their money. The Detroit team emerged victorious in 2 out of their first three games against the dinosaurs, and the Raptors won the remaining game in OT.  Tonight, the Falcons come out swinging, leading to an early first period lead through Magnus Liljestrom. The assist came from newcomer Henrik Lundqvist Jr, recently traded to Detroit from the very team they’re playing now. An even strength goal by Bryce Turner, and a late power play goal by Sven Svensson after a boarding call against Teddy Williams saw the period end in a 2-1 lead for the Raptors though. 10 Minutes into the second period, Lundqvist Jr came through with his second assist of the game and this time Kekkonen finished the job. Topalo and Drunkenbird traded goals, before Teddy Williams made up for his earlier penalties by putting the Falcons back in the lead. A third period goal for the Raptors by Gorbachenko kept the whole crowd watching the game breathless, and even though Kekkonen promoted a pass by Teddy Williams to the fifth goal for the Falcons halfway through the last period, the game could still swing either way until the final buzzer.

Labovitch once again had a strong offensive game, contributing with an assist on the Falcons’ second goal of the game. His defensive game could’ve been better in this hard fought game, but ultimately the Falcons will be happy with the win and the playmakers’ contribution on the Raptors’ side of the ice.

Game 39: Kelowna Knights (Away)

Kelowna needed to keep the points at home to keep hopes of taking first place in the Western Conference alive, and despite losing most of their games against the Detroit Falcons this season the results of their first meetup this season showed everything is possible. The Falcons just came off a tough, close game against the Colorado Raptors and the Knights were looking to exploit this.  It took 2 late first period goals for the Detroit Falcons to keep up with the Knights and go into the first intermission with a  tied score. The second period was a prey for the Knights though, who capitalised on one of three powerplays gifted to them. With both teams scoring once more in the third period, the Knights got what they wanted from the game and sent the Falcons back home pointless.

Cal Labovitch scored the Falcons’ third period goal that gave them the hope of staying in the game, but his strong offensive play and more than decent defensive efforts couldn’t prevent a hard fought loss against the Kelowna Knights. The otherwise omnipresent Teddy Williams didn’t really get a hold of his game tonight, and Kekkonen wasn’t at his best either making it hard for Cal to find a connection out on the ice.

Game 40: Maine Timber (Away)

Determined to come back from the close loss against the Knights, the Detroit Falcons faced the Maine Timber. With Edward Williams and Kaarlo Kekkonen both not having their greatest game against the Knights, everyone in the Detroit organisation is hoping for a speedy recovery. And they’d get exactly what they asked for in this 3-2 win for the Detroit Falcons. With Edward Williams scoring two goals, Kaarlo Kekkonen racking up three assists and Cal Labovitch scoring the game winner and having assists on the other two goals, the Detroit top line singlehandedly won the game for the Falcons. Coming back from behind twice in this game, Cal Labovitch found a way past Leo Bloomfield on the power play late in the third period to put the Falcons ahead for the first time this game and lead them to the win.

Cal’s goal and two assists made him tonight’s third star of the game, with only linemate Kaarlo Kekkonen (3 assists) and Maine forward Valentin Kalashnikov (1 goal, 1 assist) getting more credit for their teams’ performance. He’ll be happy he reached 15 goals for the season, and is now 1 assist away from breaking 20.

Game 41: Anchorage Armada (Away)

The Anchorage Armada are fighting for the top spot in the Western Conference, but the Detroit Falcons came all the way up to Anchorage to put in the dent in those aspirations. The Detroit first line connecting and finding each other out on the ice usually means trouble for the opponent and this game is not much different. Lead by Edward Williams (4 goals and an assist) and Cal Labovitch (3 assists), the Detroit team picked up where it left off against the Maine Timber and with the rest of the team following suit this time they sank the Armada harder than the iceberg sank the Titanic. Edward Williams scored three of his four goals today in the first period, and though the Boats scored the opening goal they found themselves out of the game and with no hopes of recovering after twenty minutes, trailing by three. All four goals scored by the Falcons in the first period were on the power play, where the Williams-Kekkonen-Labovitch line really wreaked havoc. The fourth goal was scored by Zoltan Topalo, who also picked up a penalty for the Falcons a minute before the end of the first period. The Falcons took their foot of the gas for the second period and gave the Armada some room to breathe, but goals ten seconds before the end of the second, and 40 seconds into the third set the tone for the rest of the third period and a fifth powerplay goal, once again scored by Edward Williams and assisted by Cal Labovitch, sealed the deal and put the 8-1 final score on the board.

A very strong powerplay effort by the Falcons this game, especially the Kekkonen-Williams-Labovitch line. Cal Labovitch had three assists on the power play goals scored by Edward Williams, including the assists on the game tying and game winning goals. He was also indirectly involved in Edward Williams fourth goal, though he didn’t get credited with the assist.

Game 42: Carolina Kraken (Away)

Game four on the road for the Detroit Falcons, and the trip takes them from Anchorage, Alaska to Carolina to take on the local Kraken. The Falcons have bad memories of their last two games against the Carolina team, but tonight Frans Eller proved to be a lot less of a nuisance than in those earlier games. Thor Odinson takes the net for the Falcons and he can see the Falcons struggling in the offensive zone for the first twenty minutes. Going scoreless back to their dressing room for the first tea break, the Falcons will be wondering if this is going to be one of those games again. Detroit’s first line were back to their regular job again in the second period though, with both Kekkonen and Williams scoring. Another goal by Zoltan Topalo, his 16th of the season, meant the Falcons were a lot less anxious in the dressing room for the second intermission. Seven more goals for the Falcons in the third period completed the 10-0 monster score, and left Eller broken in his goal crease. The frustration was clearly visible with the Carolina Kraken players, as Vitek Vitecek got a major penalty after a vicious illegal check to the head of an unsuspecting Falcon player.

A collective good day by the entire Falcon team, and Labovitch had his part in it. Setting up the opening, and game winning, goal in this game, and being omnipresent both in an offensive and defensive capacity he will look back at this game against the struggling Kraken as one of his best of the season despite not getting his name on the scoresheet more than once.

Game 43: Anaheim Outlaws (Away)

Eight games to go in the season and the Detroit Falcons pay a visit to the Outlaw Saloon. In a close fought game, both goalies manage to keep their nets clean for more than two full periods. It takes the falcons 25 shots, versus 23 shots by the gunslinging Outlaws, and over 47 minutes of play before they manage to find the Anaheim net. It’s Frederick Wanesly who scores on an assit by Reid Sutherland and Guy O’Shea.

Cal Labovitch saw his rival Rhys Pritchard get the second star of the game through some decent defensive play and allround hard work. The both have been rivals ever since they entered the SMJHL and were racing eachother for the rookie of the year and rookie points leader titles. Both those races were won by Pritchard, and Cal Labovitch will be pleased his Falcons haven’t lost a single game to Pritchards’ Outlaws this season.

Game 44: Newfoundland Berserkers (Home)

Finally the Detroit crowds get to see a Falcons’ game again, as their five game road stretch comes to an end. First of three teams to visit the Jet Blue Airways Arena are the Newfoundland Berserkers. An early goal by Gavin Wallace, and a late first period power play goal by Ryuuji Minamino put the Falcons back in their place, and despite a second period goal by Jmac NCheese, the Detroit team wasn’t able to turn things around in front of their home crowd and saw the Newfoundland Berserkers return home with the two points.

Cal had a sloppy game, picking up two penalties when their team was already struggling made it harder for his teammates to force a comeback.

Game 45: Carolina Kraken (Home)

Despite their previous 10-0 win over the Carolina Kraken, the Detroit Falcons weren’t going to take this one lightly. The Kraken had already proven themselves dangerous adversaries on previous occasions this season and after the dissappointing loss against the Berserkers last game, the Falcons want to give their home crowd a win in this one. Playing a bit more conservative against the weak opponent than usual, the first period once again went by without a single goal scored. Two goals late in the second period, with less than 75 seconds between them, were enough for the Falcons to keep the points at home and sent the Kraken back to Carolina pointless despite their late third period effort at closing the gap.

Cal Labovitch was pretty much invisible this game. He continues the trend of alternating absolutely stunning games with terrible games like this. He’ll be dissappointed he couldn’t give the home crowd more to look at.

Game 46: Anchorage Armada (Home)

The Anchorage Armada are the last of three teams in a row to visit the Jet Blue Airways Arena in Detroit. The Anchorage team is still in the race for the Western Conference title, and has come to Detroit to take the points home. Detroit shows the Boats and their own home fans they don’t intend to entertain that request right from the startt though. It’s Zoltan Topalo who scores his 17th goal of the season in the 4th minute. Both teams score on the power play before the end of the first period, and the Falcons go into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. The second period is close again, and both teams manage to stay out of trouble and keep their nets clear. In the third period, Cal Labovitch extends the Falcons’ lead to two goals, but it’s Anchorage star player, and Cal Labovitch’s teammate in Team Switzerland, Mitchell van der Heijden who ties it for the Armada with two goals in 4 minutes. Both teams hang on for the tie through regulation, and overtime doesn’t bring a winner either. It’s Zoltan Topalo who finds the net in the shootout, while A Jobin keeps all the pucks out as they lead the Falcons to a shootout win.

Cal Labovitch saw his fellow Swiss National Team player Mitchell van der Heijden, a Dutchy playing there on a Swiss passport, tie the game late in the third period on a powerplay caused by his hooking action, and effectively undoing the lead his earlier third period goal gave the Falcons. It’ll leave him with mixed feelings, wondering if they could’ve won it in regulation if he had just kept his stick down on the ice.

Game 47: St. Louis Scarecrows (Away)

The last rivalry game of the regular season, and both teams will be looking to win this one.  The game’s pretty close for all of the 60 minutes of play, with the first and second period being dominated by penalties from both sides. The St. Louis Scarecrows manage to make the best use of their special teams, as Alex Reyer scores on the powerplay in the first period, while Grapefruit Lizard bags a rare shorthanded goal late in the second. An early goal by Sasha Dangelcheck in the third period puts the Scarecrows up by three, and despite Zoltan Topalo pegging one back within 15 seconds, and Henrik Lundqvist Jr bringing the margin down to one with a short handed goal with 13 minutes left to play, the Scarecrows win this rivalry game with 3-2.

Cal had a solid game, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to help his team beat the Scarecrows. Especcially defensively, he did more than his part. On the offensive side he wasn’t necessarily bad, but the Scarecrows defense did a good job of keeping him isolated and unable to set up his teammates.

Game 48: Vancouver Whalers (Home)

Three more games remainging in the regular season, and two of them are at home against the Vancouver Whalers. The points in the two away games were divided evenly between the two teams, both of them winning one. The Falcons aren’t keen to apply the same to the home games though, and they make it pretty clear in this first one as they cruise to a 4-0 win. Goals by Burlok Sulfurgold and Magnus Liljestrom put thm up by two before the start of the the third period, and Jack Kanoff makes it four by scoring his 10th and 11th goal of the season in the last period.

Cal had a solid offensive game, though his defensive work was pretty lazy again. Vancouver wasn’t in any position to abuse this though, so nobody will bat an eye at it.

Game 49: Maine Timber (Away)

Thor Odinson get another go in the crease in the last road game of the seaso and, with nothing left to lose, the Falcons are fielding newbies Kolja Kekkonen and Stan Q. Next as well. A hot Leo Bloomfield in net for the Maine Timber makes for a closer game than the shot differential would predict. The Maine goalie made 41 saves on 45 shots, while the Timber couldn’t even get half that number of shots on Odinsons net. Kolja Kekkonen and Stan Q. Next both got to pick up their first career point, with assists on Detroit’s first and second goal. The Maine Timber took a cheeky 3-2 lead in the second period, but Reid Sutherland and Edward Williams set the record straight in the third period.

With four shots on net and a +1 rating, Cal Labovitch had another solid game. Even if he doesn’t get himself on the scoresheet as often as he’d like, he’s very valuable to his team as he has the ability to make those around him play better as well.

Game 50: Vancouver Whalers (Home)

Last game of the season, and the Vancouver Whalers visit Detroit again. Kolja Kekkonen and Stan Q. Next are once again on the roster, and Stan q. Next repays that confidence in him by scoring his first career goal, and giving Detroit the 2-0 lead halfway through the first period. Two more first period goals for the Falcons means they can pretty much lean back for the remainder of the game.  The second period sees the Whalers put one past Jobin in net, but an early third period goal by Taisto Jutila, assisted by Lundqvist Jr and Stan Q. Next, crushes all hopes they may have had for a comeback. Goals by Corrigan for the Whalers and Kaarlo Kekkonen for the Falcons take the final score in this last game of the regular season to 6-2.

Cal Labovitch had an assist on the Falcons’ sixth goal, but seemed to take it easy and save his strength for the playoffs.

OGR: 66              DGR: 57                GR: 63

Goals: 0                Assists: 1              Points: 1

+/-: +1                  TOT: 15:15          PIM: 0

Despite not putting up the numbers he’s used to from his first and second season in the SMJHL, Cal Labovitch is more than happy with how this season turned out.  He evolved into a true playmaker and setup man, and when he plays well he can lift the rest of the team up into great heights. Funnily enough, Cal seems to be more of a road game player, with 24 of his 41 points coming from road games.

The Falcons have won the Laurifer trophy for the second season in a row. And while their playoff performance last season wasn’t quite what they hoped for, the Detroit team is pretty confident in their chances this season as they have shown they can beat any team on any day of the week.

I'd like it to be more in depth. Can you post a pbp of every game?

I can, but I won't.

And where was this attitude when it was one of your own players who got 22M for copy pasting a PBP last season?

Your selective outrage is pathetic.
