Johnny Hamilton Press Conference Announced for 12pm MST

(This post was last modified: 05-14-2020, 10:23 PM by hhh81.)

8:03am: After the Kelowna Knights' sweep of the Colorado Raptors last night, Colorado General Manager Johnny Hamilton has announced a press conference for noon today (MST), May 2, 2020, live on RaptorSpeak.com. It is believed he will be announcing the end of his tenure as Raptors GM and discussing his future.
---
12:00pm:

Welcome all and thank you for coming on short notice. My name is Johnny Hamilton, and since S48 I have been the General Manager of the Colorado Raptors. This will be my last day addressing you as such.

This is a decision we didn’t take lightly. I’m proud of the work I’ve done as GM for this team over the last six seasons. We built a powerful scouting and player development department that has led to Colorado being a premiere place for young players to develop their game in North America before going onto success in the SHL. As we entered this season and the transition to FHM, I felt my personal and professional stress rising and realized I didn’t still have the passion to keep leading this team at the level they deserve. I also saw outstanding talent in our management group that I feel is ready to take the next steps and lead this team. It was time to step back and let others pick up the banner.

When I came to this decision, I let the league officials and my staff know this would be my final season. I let our players know tonight, after our do nothing owner came to tell me my contract hadn’t been renewed. His administrative assistant received the memo three weeks ago I was resigning, so I don’t know what that’s about. Feckin' moron.

The end of the season isn’t what any of us wanted, but I’m proud of the team we have returning for next season and think they have a firm foundation to be stronger next season. I know our coaching staff worked their hardest. Kelowna was a very good team all year and their depth at forward was simply stronger than ours. I expect to see them in the Four Star Cup Finals this year.

I'll now take questions.
---
OOC, hi y’all, it’s hhh81 here. This is 100% real, despite the media. I decided a few weeks ago I was going to step down, well before all this controversy. GMing wore me down, and the end of the season, while exciting to put together a good stretch the last “month” , still wasn’t something I felt like I wanted to keep doing right now. I’d love to come back to the team as GM someday, but for now I’m ready to step back and let someone else lead the charge.

You weren't, you sly snake. You were still our @GeckoeyGecko all along, even if you never got paid to make me do all the work. Loved having you by my side through the last year and half in Colorado.

When you look back at your tenure as GM, what are you most proud of?

Any words of wisdom for your successor?

I'd also like to once again give you a big thank for being a fantastic GM. This being my first sports Sim I just didn't know what to expect but being part of the community you built in Colorado got me hooked instantly. Thanks a ton for all you've done for the raptors and to us, your players.
I think the moment I realized the S50 3rd overall pick could define my career as GM was definitely an "oh shit" moment. I didn't love any of the options at the top of the draft, but Anaheim and Carolina did. I had a great time facilitating a bidding war between @FuzzSHL and @BDonini and in the end.... what a fucking trade. I feel a little bad the player Anaheim drafted went inactive almost immediately, but only a little. That trade really set the S50 playoff run up, and got us some picks that unfortunately didn't pay off the way we'd hoped (we miss you Chris Cerullo). Trades like that only come along once in a career, and I think I made the best of that trade value, even if it didn't go as ideally intended.

I'm really proud of seeing first gen users like you, @LordBirdman @ProjectSaint @FreakinAnime @Duff101 and so many others come into their own on the site. I would have loved a Four Star Cup, but seeing you all grow and engage here is truly why I was a juniors GM. This site, and Colorado/SMJHL specifically, got me through a really hard period of unemployment post master's degree, moving across the country, a big breakup, and everything else. I built a culture in Colorado focused on engaging and supporting new users whenever and however I can. That's worth being proud of.

Trust your instincts. I know I've got a reputation for being a bit rigid when it comes to recreates (and rarely drafting them), but it honestly has done me well. I may have won more games if I loaded up on veteran users, but I felt most true drafting and empowering newer users to the site. And we see the two times I decided to go for recreates (Jesster and The Scammer this year), it's not gone well. Colorado is a family, and whoever follows me will have users like myself and @wumaduce pushing them toward upholding that culture.

Thanks, Henrik. That means a lot to me. I tried my hardest.

anyways here are some questions
Best draft steal you've picked?
funniest player you've had in colorado?
favorite smjhl moment?
Thanks, bloos!

It's hard not to look to our first pick in S50. We got Henrik Lundqvist Jr late in the 3rd after trading out of the first few rounds (see the Anaheim trade mentioned above). He went from unknown to a top 6 SHL pick in just a season. He's a great kid and I wish him well in West Kendall Baltimore next season. I wish he could have had more success with us, but now I hope he can get a Four Star Cup with @notorioustig and Detroit this year. Henrik Lekberg Osterman at 52nd overall in S49 or Sven Svenson at 34th overall in S52 were also really great picks, and Jean-Uthred Ragnarsson Tremblay (@lespoils) looks to be one of our best last year at 58th overall. I took him as a stab in the dark, unsure if he would stay active or even come back after recreating. We've been thrilled to have him in the LR this season and have high hopes for his development. I seem to have a way with grabbing solid forward prospects... Interesting.

Funniest? Um Esso is right there. The dude is weird as shit and always a fun person to have in the LR. I asked Vancouver to draft him and I together in S44 as first gens, and the Colorado did it. When he recreated I knew I wanted to bring him back home, and luckily no team dicked me out of him.

Rookie season, Colorado Meme Team behind Scottey Crawfling and knocking off the super powered Detroit Falcons team after trading them half our roster. That was a ton of fun. Losing to STL the next round was less fun, but @39alaska39 gets to be last GM to ever trade himself at the TDL and then go on to beat his own team in the finals. Beyond that, it's a lot of small moments with the other GMs, mercilessly harming tig's mental health, etc. It's been a good run.

05-02-2020, 12:57 PMsve7en Wrote: No big questions here, but I want to tip my cap to you. From when you first DMed me at the start of my time on this site 2 seasons ago you've been an absolute class act and a prime example of what a GM should be on the personal side of things. That you kept your sanity and poise while dealing with some unsavory people is a reflection of that as well. I hope you enjoy your freedom from the responsibilities and that you continue to be a solid member of this site <3

Now that it's all said and done, would you recommend being a GM?
Thanks sve7en! I would say it takes a certain type of person to enjoy and succeed as a GM. You have the tacticians who thrive in strategies and such. That was never me. I always was focused on developing users and supporting them toward success in the SHL. Sometimes that resulted in losing great users faster than planned (we still miss you @Tate), but I really enjoy the player scouting/development side of things. If you want to be in control of every little thing, GMing in the J isn't for you. I also think we have the hardest job on the site, trying to make sense of all the new users each season and taking shots in the dark hoping to find value and good users. It doesn't always pan out, but when you do a good job SHL GMs get the profits. If you're looking to win every season, you won't like GMing in the J. That's not what it's about, despite what some users may try to spout off. It's about retaining and engaging new users. Period.

Details and organization matters. I know I had a larger scouting staff than most any other SMJHL team, but that's because I wanted to take a personal touch with every prospect and have as good information as I could. I pride myself on my scouting sheets, and work hard to do as much legwork before the draft as possible, so it's easy to pull the next name on the list up when the team is on the clock. My first draft in S47 was a MESS and all the GMs/HO were so mad we took so long. Detailed draft boards... that's the key.

Raptors have been blessed to have someone like you leading the way and your impact will be felt throughout the incredible LR you built throughout your tenure for many many seasons.
1. Gotta be the Anaheim trade. I turned a 3rd overall pick (which became noted bust John Forfeit) into

LW Anthony Archer (salary retained)
raiders S50 3rd (28th overall) – Selected C Henrik Lundqvist Jr (590 TPE)
Outlaws S51 3rd (27th overall) – RW Matthew Anderson (176 TPE)
Outlaws S52 1st (3rd overall) – RW Hiroshi Ohira (279 TPE)
Outlaws S52 5th (43rd overall) -  D Glen Anders (203 TPE)

Archer's an SHL player for Tampa now, HLJ will be on Baltimore's opening night roster in S54 and Ohira is well on his way as a developmental piece for the defending Challenge Cup champions. Anders ghosting and Anderson's real life stuff hurt, but in all Colorado got more value than Anaheim. Sure, we could have gotten a better pick at 43rd OV last year, but we needed defense and Anders was the best option at the time.

2. As GM the run to the Four Star Cup Finals in S50 will always be a big one for me. I built a good team--it could have been a great team, but I was hell bent on giving everyone a shot and rolling a balanced lineup. I think if I'd pushed harder to maximize our win chances, Emiko Spector could have set some SMJHL records and Bo Kane may have pulled off the MVP. Alas, I don't regret my choices that year. It probably cost a few players higher up higher scoring numbers, but I stuck to my guns and rolled with our deep AF top 9 forwards.

Thanks to you as well, NONAME. I'm glad I hired you when sleepy abandoned me :( -- I know you've grown impatient at times with my willingness to try to give people chances. i appreciate your trust and support through it all. I think you're ready to take on your own team, and wish you well.

Bilbo put it best: when two teams focus on getting good, friendly people, they're bound to battle for the same draft picks. Clearly neither of us could do much with those picks rip.

I guess I'd like to know how much time someone should expect to put in day in and day out to be an effective GM, or co-GM?  What are some of the aspects of being a GM that most people don't see, both positive and negative?
It's been a pleasure. I'm happy to see you grow on the site. Still thrilled you were there for us as late as you were. You should have been long gone!

It's hard to say. In the offseason, because so many other people control the schedule, it gets very stressful at times with the GM tasks and then scouting for the draft and reacting to what the recruitment team does. In past seasons it chilled out for me, because I left line strategies largely to my Co-GM (as STHS did NOT want to open on my computer for some inexplicable reason). The tradition to FHM ended up taking more time than I wanted. I think in an ideal world I would have a savant strategist-coach alongside me. I thrive with the scouting and other human aspects of things. I guess the short answer is it depends. I never did many test sims (because I find them largely useless especially in FHM but also because I don't want to), but those can take some time. You need a balance of the different roles to thrive. FHM took more time because the sims also took a lot of time to watch live... during work (don't tell my bosses).

Around the draft, well you've seen how I operate. I think I spent upwards of 40 hours scouting and prepping for the S52 draft, if not longer. A lot of it was by myself because people's schedules were busy when the draft happened, and then I flew solo for a chunk of the draft day.

Thanks for the kind words @39alaska39 @Mack @Tate

It's good to hear from you PS/Emeka. You were a joy to have on the team, both as a player and now as an alum. Who knows what the future will hold? For now, I'm focused on helping there be a successful transition from me to the new GM.

I have not given any thoughts to starting any form of restaurant, much less a BBQ chain. Good BBQ is a gift, but I'm not sure I have the skills or temperament for the restaurant industry. I'll stick to what I know: contract law, people management, and bringing some of the world's best young men to North American sport.

Hans here. First of all it was a pleasure to compete with you these last few seasons.

What has been your favorite rebrand in the smjhl of all time?

Thanks.
Thanks Hans. So sorry for any angst we've caused you all in Hal- I mean Maine. For your sake, maybe the Colorado-Maine draft magic will stop? Eh, who are we kidding!

I haven't seen a ton of rebrands in my time on the site. Kelowna cleaned up their logo once, Halifax has rebranded like... 8 times since S44? St. Louis changed to a scarier Scarecrow (definitely NOT my favorite). Newfoundland was Lethbridge, so that's all positive to get out of the bad blood of that horrid run. I liked Kelowna's revised logo as a strong #3. Runner up would be the final Halifax Raiders logo from S45-S52. King talked with me a lot about it, and I think it's a good look.

My favorite? I'm not ashamed to admit I LOVE the Carolina Kraken. The team name is really fun and cool, and I'm thrilled to have Montreal out of the league. I think it's good to distance from the mess that I heard consistently about Vliddy's time as GM from alumni. It also opens up a door for Montreal to go to the SHL, I guess, which has some people excited. I've represented Cassius Darrow for the last decade, and have tried to temper any public comments about his feelings regarding the city of Montreal. Other than his pre-SMJHL Draft comments, he's kept out of the spotlight of that controversy. Anyway, Fuzz is great and does an excellent job, and the Kraken rebrand is my favorite.

05-08-2020, 10:16 PMFaelax Wrote: As a well loved GM yourself, what advice would you give to someone who wants to one day become a GM themselves?
Thanks for the kind words, Al. (may I call you Al?)

Anyway, that's a solid question. There's no one best way to be a good general manager. A big part is knowing yourself. I think there are a lot of people who want to be the head honcho, but later realize it's not the best fit for them. We all have different strengths in life, and the same goes for management. Some people are great at the people side of GMing, being super personable, building relationships, and helping users. Others are excellent at the strategy/sim aspects of the job, and you'll know they will always have the best possible strategies in a given game. Other otherss are excellent scouts or have good "gut" instincts, and seem to have a knack for the art of finding the people that will stay active (and avoid the people that won't.) Still others thrive creating and maintaining a great locker room environment, where the team feels like a family. A few people can do all of these things well, but far more only thrive in 1-2 of those things. The key is knowing what your strengths are and then surrounding yourself with people smarter than you that build off your strengths with their own.

I think the best juniors GMs balance creating a great LR environment, doing a good job with player scouting and development, and also developing users to step into bigger roles on the site. I'm proudest of the dozens of great users that have come from Colorado into SHL stardom during my tenure, but also the users I've helped shepherd in some way toward team management or other site jobs. If I have people learning and growing on my team, then that means there are more motivated and committed users to help the SHL keep growing and improving.

Quote:What do you think of Head Office's hire of your replacement?
I think they got it right. Brett Kane is a smart man, and he knows our culture. I think he's ready to take over and lead a team, and I'm proud for him to fill my shoes. I will help him however I can and however he wishes me too; that is his decision, and I know he'll make good decisions on high character players. I made the call to step away in hopes of Kaner taking over the team and let some of our great scouts and player development guys step up into more roles. Drafting Bo Kane was one of the best things I ever did, because it brought Uncle Brett into the family. I hope he can bring us our second Four Star Cup very soon.
