Creating a 155 TPE build for every FHM role
#1
(This post was last modified: 05-22-2020, 12:30 AM by JURT.)

One season into FHM simulation, people start getting a better comprehension of the strategies, roles and builds that will make a good player. GMs have a lot of advice to give to their players who already have a certain amount of TPE, but I’ve been curious about what advice would be the best build for a new player with the basic 155 starting TPE in a certain role.

So, just like Thanos, I decided to do it myself. With the incredible help of the Player Builder, I made a 155 TPE build for every role FHM has to offer, using a few basic guidelines. A very interesting exercise to satisfy my curiosity, albeit a much longer one than I thought.

Let me preface this by saying that I have not ran extensive (or any, for that matter) simulation or test of any kind on any of the things I will be presenting in here. These builds are based solely on observations after this first season in FHM and what I’ve gathered from looking at results, actual builds and advice given to different people in both my SMJHL and SHL locker rooms.

Without further ado, I present you with my take on the best builds for every role for a new player. This is especially designed with first-generation rookies in mind (or anyone who would recreate after a few seasons of inactivity, without prior knowledge of FHM).

Guidelines
The number one priority for each role is what FHM defines as important attributes, the ones that will appear in red in both the game and the Player Builder. All of those should be set at 11 from the start if one wants to perform in the way he intends. In some cases, it will not be possible to maintain them all at 11 without great deficiencies in other necessary attributes. Some will then have to be lowered to 10, but the one key attribute (not indicated on the Player Builder but defined in FHM) should never be one of them. Of course, many roles share attributes, and one might find himself hesitating between a few choices. The team’s needs might also come into play later. For now, we will assume the rookie chooses one specific role and sticks to it. The first TPE earned before even stepping on the ice should be enough to adapt if necessary.

This is the first of two reasons why I wouldn’t recommend going over 11 in any important role attribute, even the one labeled as key attribute, except in some rare cases, mostly defensive-focused ones. The second reason is that the general opinion around the league tells us that a player that keeps basic scores (5-6) in many defensive and physical attributes are having a direct negative impact on the team when they step on the ice, and those keeping these attributes low (7-8) can still be important liabilities in their own end in ways that no offensive rookie build can compensate. Anyone going over 11 in a important attribute puts himself at risk of being this liability by not having enough TPE left for the other – still impactful – attributes.

Therefore, after bringing these important role attributes to 11, we will bring any of the following attributes remaining to 9, for a good basic build.
- Checking
- Positioning
- Stickchecking
- Defensive Read
- Every physical attribute, except for fighting
- Stickhandling

Some might advocate to keep a few of those at eight and maybe some of the important attributes at 10 to bring the key attribute to 12 or 13. This will vary and depends on the user and their philosophy. It would however make our exercise much more difficult, and I would rather take the position where this specialization should be made with the first few TPE earned.

Some could also be in favor of increasing Stamina higher from the start. I agree it’s a vital attribute for anyone and should be quickly upgraded to 12 or even 13, but not with the first 155 TPE if we want to best fulfill a precise role.

The TPE left after these steps will go towards upgrading some of the other attributes, those will vary depending on the type of player, but passing and offensive read seem to be important enough, to avoid losing the puck every time it touches ones’ stick.

On a final note, to make this exercise easier, any forward position that doesn’t have Faceoff as an important attribute will be built assuming the player is a winger and have no points in faceoff. A center would obviously have to free up a bit of TPE to get this attribute to 7, at the very least; 8 or 9, to be adequate; and 10 or 11, to be good (for a rookie).

EDIT : I put up a sheet with the important and key attributes for each role identified, to provide visual help if needed.

Forward builds
Goalscorer
Perimeter Shooter
This first one doesn’t follow one of the main guidelines about defensive attributes. Shooters are rarely also known to be great defensive players. Still, by getting none of the important defensive attributes under 8 and a 9 in Defensive Read, with almost every physical attribute at 11, a player of this build wouldn’t be terrible if put on a line with more defensively responsible players. One or two of the physical attributes or the Puckhandling one would be good choices to put at 10 and free up some TPE.

This one has a few better defensive qualities than the Perimeter Shooter but lacks in some physical attributes. It is the build with the most TPE dedicated to offensive attributes of all. Garbage Collector
Very similar to the Sniper, except Puckhandling, Acceleration and Speed are switched with Agility, Balance and Strength; all accordingly to the way of scoring either of those roles favors. It’s hard to identify an attribute that can be lowered to free TPE without much impact. If one must absolutely do so, Getting Open and Agility could be lowered to 10.

Offensive forward
Dangler
The Dangler role also poses a lot of challenges. Passing isn’t identified as an important attribute for it, but it cannot be left at 7 as it was with the Goalscorer roles; if it did, not much would differentiate this role from these roles. It actually has the exact same important attributes as the Perimeter Shooter; only the key attribute among those changes. Since we do not take them into account for these rookie builds, the passing will be the differentiating factor. This player could very well adapt into most of the other offensive roles if need be. The best way to free up TPE, although it should be avoided, would be to put some of the defensive attributes back to 8 as the Perimeter Shooter had.

Speedy Forward
This build is the first one we see to follow every guideline entirely, with important attributes at 11 and any other impactful one at 9. A very good build for a rookie winger and easy to develop in any other – more specialized – offensive role rather quickly. Freeing up TPE could easily be done with one or two physical attributes being at 10 instead of 11. Getting open could also be taken down a notch.

Playmaker
Playmaker
Despite having Faceoffs as an important attribute, this role only has 6 of these attributes, whereas most of the previous had 7 or 8. It’s then easy to put everything to a level we like, and Speed here is even upgraded to 10, higher than the 9 our guidelines recommended. These 5 TPE and the 8 TPE to get goalscoring abilities (Getting Open and Shooting Accuracy) from 7 to 9 are more easily removed and put elsewhere.

Setup m=Man
Only 6 important attributes here, so there is a lot of flexibility. We’ll use that to upgrade the key attribute, Passing, to 12, but many other options are available by playing around a bit with the attributes. Leaving Passing at 11 to put Shooting Accuracy at 9, Shooting Range at 6 and any attribute at 9/10 up by 1 could be a good option too.

Gretzky’s Office
The hardest of the Playmaker roles, it has 7 important attributes and one of them is Faceoffs. Luckily, one is Stamina and is already at 11. This let’s us do something similar to what we did with the Playmaker role. Offensive Read is the key attribute this time.

Power Forward
Screener
Another one where Faceoffs being an important attribute makes things difficult. We can manage by not getting this attribute to 11 but only to 10, and the sacrificing one defensive attribute. Shooting range can stay at 5 for a new player, because a Screener will stay closer to the net. Getting Open could be a good way to free some TPE if needed, by keeping it a 10.

Power Forward
This is our first role requiring a strong Hitting attribute, which causes similar problems to roles needing a strong Faceoffs attribute. The physical and defensive important attributes ideally stay at 11, but the other ones can be played around a bit to free up some TPE.

Two-way Forward
Counterattacking Forward
This build is the first of many to come that don’t need a lot of high offensive attribute, which makes it easier to put points in the defensive and physical attributes that aren’t marked as important but still matter a lot for everyone. Any non-important offensive attribute could be easily changed to get some more TPE available, should one want to reorganize them, increase Hitting a bit more or even put a few points in Shot Blocking.

Two-way Forward
This one also goes rather easily, although the higher number of offensive attributes you need makes a little less flexible than the Counterattacking Forward. Not much should be changed from this template, but if it can’t be avoided (like in the case of a Two-way Center who needs TPE for the Faceoffs attribute), dropping one or two of the important attributes is not that much of a game-changer.

Up-and-down Winger
Speed is key here, but Acceleration and Stamina will need to be upgraded quickly. Still, as they are not identified as important, they are not a priority for our starting build. One could favor getting Shooting Accuracy at 11 at the cost of putting no or little TPE in Hitting, Passing and/or Getting Open. I wouldn’t go this way as skating up and down the ice implies hitting and passing from time to time and in a more important fashion than most of the builds seen so far do.

Grinder
Grinder
Bravery makes its first apparition as an important attribute. I also put some of the TPE left after following the guidelines in Aggression, to give it a bit more grit. That and the Puckhandling TPE should be the first options for someone who would like to mess things up a bit.

Aggressive Forechecker
Another high-defense, high-physical role, I still tried to put a bit of TPE in the offensive attributes for whenever this aggressive forechecking creates a turnover. All those and the mental attributes could easily be switched around to fit the player’s needs. This one even has 1 TPE in the bank at the end!

Punishing Forward
Aggression and bravery are there again. It’s harder for me to evaluate these attributes and their impact, but the name of the role suggests that it would be safe to put at least this little TPE in it. I’ve also added a little point in fighting in case anyone doesn’t take well to his punishment and tried to balance the offense; this is still a forward we’re talking about.

Defensive Forward
Backchecking Forward
This one commands a lot of TPE in defensive and physical attributes and the offense is set aside, as expected with this role. It’s still good to keep a tiny bit of TPE for a few of these offensive stats; I chose Passing and Offensive Read for this build, so it is not a complete liability in the offensive zone. What use is a good defender if he’s only defending to correct his own mistakes?

Shadow
This one is basically a Backchecking Forward that doesn’t need as much Acceleration (and with a different key attribute, but that’s for later), there’s not much to change from the last one. I switched it back to 10 and used that to upgrade Strength to the same level, but there’d be many other options to play around (more Hitting or Shot Blocking wouldn’t be a bad thing either, for example).

Enforcer
Agitator
Entering the mindset of someone who’d make any of these enforcer roles was hard, because I’m definitely not that type of player myself. Following the established guidelines requires that a lot of offensive skill must be sacrificed, and a bit of defense too. No big surprise there.

Goon/Enforcer
Having determination as an important attribute for both these roles along with only five others (the same for both roles) surprisingly makes this one of the easier and most flexible builds yet. Defenseman builds
Offensive Defenseman
Playmaking Defenseman
This one was surprisingly well-fitting with the guidelines set. The only alteration to it was decreasing Shooting Accuracy to 10 despite it being an important attribute. This provided enough TPE to bring Shooting Range up to 9; a high Shooting Accuracy would be rendered useless for a defenseman with no shooting range.

The last of the Offensive Defenseman roles is a bit harder to match with the guidelines but it if feasible, although the result might not have the same flexibility as the last few builds. One could be tempted to switch TPE from Hitting and/or Shot Blocking to Passing (or conversely) and would still have an entirely valid build after doing so.

Two-way Defenseman
Two-way Defenseman
A hard build to make as a choice between Puckhandling or Passing is inevitable. Other low (6-7) attributes can be messed around with here too, so long as the important attributes are kept at their value. I chose Puckhandling over Passing because more roles have it as important, and I chose defensive attributes like Hitting and Shot Blocking because I believe a defenseman should favor defense when it comes to non-role-related attributes.

Mobile Defenseman
This one relies a lot on the physical attributes and it will be crucial to upgrade Stamina early on. The rest is balanced between a bit of offense and adequate defense. Hitting is low since a Mobile Defenseman will use speed and skill to take the puck and quickly release it towards the offensive zone.

Defensive Defenseman
Stay-at-home defenseman
A lot of room to play with here in the Passing, Shooting and Hitting departments, after the important attributes are brought to 11. Defensive Read is not identified as an important attribute, but no Defensive Defenseman can do well with a low rating there.

Crease-clearing Defenseman
This one has other priorities but is still similar to the last one. One fewer important attribute makes it so Defensive Read can be upgraded all the way to 11. A few leftover points are put in Aggression and Bravery, qualities that one will require to battle against opponents who would like to obstruct the crease.

Punishing Defensemen
Fighting being an important attribute for this role, it’s impossible to get all the other important ones to 11 without sacrificing a lot in offensive, defensive or “skating” physical attributes (Acceleration, Agility, Speed). Having Puckhandling at 10 should be enough for a 155 TPE build. Defensive Read being at 9, the first TPE earned would in this case go towards those two attributes.

Shutdown Defenseman
The Shutdown Defenseman can be made to follow the guidelines with so little TPE that there is too much to know for sure what would be best. Defensive Read can be taken to 13 as the key attribute, and still there is 5 more TPE available to use. Speed seems like a good option to keep up with fast forwards.

Goalie build
Goalies don’t have roles, but I’ve gotten this far, so here’s what my ideal goalie would be like. I’ve used exactly half (78/155) the TPE to get to 9 everywhere as all attributes are equally important in my eyes. I then used the rest to upgrade those I personally value most.

The final words on this
I’m in no way an expert but I think I made a few interesting discoveries during this fun exercise, at least for myself. From what I can see, the Shutdown and Old-School Defensemen have the best builds to fit right into a role from the very beginning. Interestingly enough, these are roles that rarely seem to be aimed for by new players creating but rather roles into which they grow according to the needs of their teams. These observations might help showing people the path to defensive reliability from the get-go.

You take at the end of shutdown and old school d is spot on for how the role ratings work even as deefnsmen move forward. If you prioritize defense almost at all you will be at least decent in these roles. The issue with more offensive roles in FHM for defensmen is that you have to more or less sell out or be in a system that is able to work it in. I think the defensive roles are stronger but you can get points with an offensive defensman as seen by the leading rookie scorer being a defensman last season.
