A season's end review of the Armada's S55 Rookie Class It's been quite the year for Armada who finished 22-23-5, 49 points, .490% for this year. This was good enough to get them 4th in the West, and secured a playoff spot against the Kelowna Knights. This isn't the year that Anchorage GM Max Brannagan had hoped for, but one of the bright points of the year is this impressive class of rookies, some first gens, some recreates, but all who have been eager to improve, and make an impact for the Armada. All of these players had high points and low points this year, we're going to get into the stats for all 5 S55 draftees who finished the year in Anchorage, and talk about where they need to improve in the off season. Theo Kondos, LW - @Ohtaay -Drafted 6th overall in this year's draft, Theo Kondos has made an immediate impact on the team, on and off the ice. On the ice he put up 7 goals, 7 assists, 14 points total. Kondos was extremely efficient while on the ice, his 14.89% SHP led the team this year, and his physical approach to the game showed, picking up 31 hits for the year, he led rookie forwards, and only trailed blue liner Igor Victory in that category. The biggest downside Kondos' rookie campaign is his +/, a minus 7 led the rookies, and is 2nd worst on the team. He needs to be a bit more responsible behind his own blue line if he really wants to contribute. But we have faith that he'll spend some time back home training in the Austrian alps. We look forward to seeing him in this year's playoff race, and wish him good luck in the SHL draft. We expect him to be a hot commodity and will likely go in the 1st or 2nd round. Taylor Gervais, RW, @Pamplemousse - Max Brannagan got a steal in the 2nd round with this difference maker. He finished the regular season with a stat line of 8 goals, 9 assists, 17 points. His 9 assists and 17 points led the rookie class this year, he only trailed Sven Gunnar in goals. A great impact for a player that saw an average at 12:41 TOI. Taylor spent his time split between the 3rd and 4th line this year and made sure he had an impact every time he stepped on the ice. An extremely responsible player, he only had 10 PIM, and a plus 1 rating for the year. There is no glaringly obvious are that Gervais needs to improve upon, he's a well rounded player who can play in all 3 zones and create the offense needed to win games. If he continues to play the way he has been, the Armada will have the depth needed to make a push against the Knights in this year's playoffs. Sven Gunnar, C, @Southie - Another big take away from this year's draft was Sven Gunnar, taken 37th (4th round) overall, he was the first of Anchorage's back to back picks in the 4th round this year. This Swedish center spent most of the year between the 3rd and 4th lines and picked up 10 goals, 6 assists, 16 points for the year. His 10 goals led all rookies and was tied for 4th for the Armada. Even though Sven spent a lot of his off ice time this year getting familiar with all of the American Bourbons, he achieved his goal of getting 10 goals on the year. His prayers to the God, Lemmy, must have paid off. Even though he was too drunk to show up for the draft this year, the rest of the team embraced Sven and his drunken ways. This off season should see Sven spending a lot of time doing one arm bottle curls, upping his physicality for next year. TURG TURG, LW, @ThisSeemsFishy - Taken one pick after Sven Gunnar at 38th (4th round) overall, TURG played one of the more surprisingly conservative seasons. His off ice antics don't translate on the ice, thankfully for the Armada. He scored a respectable 6 goals, 8 assists, 14 points in his rookie year. His 8 PIM was the 2nd lowest of all rookies, and tied for 2nd lowest of any Armada player who played over 25 games. His 30 SB led all rookie forwards, and he had the least amount of giveaways on the entire team. We hope that this off season TURG spends plenty of time resting up in his race car bed, and enjoys the Chocolate fountain. He's definitely not shy in spending that rookie money. TURG is one of those players that you love to have on your team, and hate to play against. TURG TURG! Igor Victory, LD @Wearingabear - This lone rookie blue liner drafted this year, Victory saw a respectable year with a stat line of 4 goals, 7 assists, 11 points. The Finnish D-man struggled in the first half of the year, especially with penalties. He finished the year with 28 PIM, tied for 2nd most on the team. He was able to rack up an average of 18:00 TOI, which is a great amount of experience for a young defender. If he really wants to be effective, he'll need to work on his passing, he gave away the puck 19 times and only had 11 takeaways. He'll need to close in that gap to be a truly great blue liner. His physicality showed however, picking up 51 hits, most among this year's rookie class. Overall, this draft class was a strong one for the Armada who saw 5 of their 9 picks sign and finish the year. Max Brannagan has to proud of this year's draft class and will be rooting for them in the upcoming play offs and SHL draft. All 5 players are extremely talented, capable, and have high ceilings, they should hopefully see themselves get drafted at respectable rounds. The Armada will be counting on these players to continue to make contributions next year and improve on their own times. Maybe TURG will invite them all over to his cabin somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, rumors have it that Sven only shows up when there is booze and metal involved. Kondos and Gervais seem like the responsible ones off the ice in this rookie class, but there's probably more than is being told. We hope the boys enjoyed their first year in the 'J and we'll be rooting for them in the playoffs. Dictated, not read by Dick S.
