First article on Deep Dive

A series depicting some of the original four franchises to come out of the NWJHL back in Season 1 and what became of them today, the first team we will take a look at is our only original franchise remaining in S55 the Vancouver Whalers. The richest SMJHL history of any team around today, and possibly one of the richest in either the SHL or SMJHL as a whole, the Vancouver Whalers began in Season 1 in the freshly minted North West Junior Hockey League and started off with the 3rd ever pick in the juniors with Tommy Trekker.

So it isn't the most storied start in the world, Trekker would end up falling to 16th to the Dragons in the SHL draft in Season 2 and his career wasn't overly fantastic.

The Whalers have gone on over 55 seasons to win 10 championships ranging from Season 10 when they finally cracked their first win, to their most recent win in Season 48. They have a long list of storied GM's, having 20 GM's in the span of 55 seasons, including SHL legends such as Hallsy, Checkmate, Coolstar, JHS, JR95, Teddy, Luke, and more who have made their stamp on the legendary Vancouver team. Season 11 under the helm of Hallsy at the helm (having taken over for Otrebor and Phil from the previous two seasons) was one of the most dominate SMJHL (NWJHL) seasons ever performed going a ridiculous 32-4-4 only to be stopped by a legendary performance by the Kelowna Knights in round 1.

As the league has evolved so has the Vancouver Whalers. While staying true for their entire history to their team name and colours, the Whalers have improved upon their branding over time as the league has evolved. Unfortunately, finding the original Whalers logo is not possible due to the removal of Tinypic images from the internet, and it has been lost to time. They rebranded roughly 4 times throughout their history updating on outdated design language over time. Notes that could be taken by the Calgary Dragons or Winnipeg Jets of the SHL.

Vancouver also boasted the only location in SHL history to host both an SMJHL team and an SHL team at the same time, coinciding with the relocation of the Wisconsin Monarchs to Vancouver in Season 3. The Vancouver major league team became the Ice Wolves and eventually the Nightmare before departing in Season 11 for Las Vegas. The support for the local minor league team which has been involved in the Greater Vancouver Area community since the inception of the league never waivered, and support for the minor league franchise, playing out of the Pacific Coliseum while the Ice Wolves/Nightmare were inhabiting Rogers Arena/GM Place, only continued to grow forcing the SHL team away from BC and into Nevada.

The Vancouver Whalers are truly the most legendary franchise the SMJHL has to offer and rarely get talked about in that regard. Very little focus is put on the franchises that built this league up, many being allowed to relocate, change branding, be defunct, but the Vancouver Whalers have remained strong. They are truly belonging in the category of legendary franchises such as the Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Dragons, Toronto North Stars. Anyone who has played there has been lucky to be involved in such an amazing history, a rich history, spanning a decade and 55 seasons.
