As the playoffs start for this season, Igor Volkov decided to reflect on his first full season with the New England Wolfpack. Having been traded in the middle of the season before, the culture shock was a bit much at first. Nonetheless, the defenseman learned to adapt quickly. He adjusted to being a Wolf with his new- er, NEW™ teammates before S55 had even begun. The team had gotten their taste of a new NEW™ player.
Igor started off S55 with low expectations. After a series of initial wins, he became one of the most enthusiastic Wolves the team had probably ever seen, giving the team some morale boost. In times where the team struggled, he often cited that "it could be worse", referencing his earlier seasons.
Not too long after that, the team went through a tough period, with loss after loss after loss. Igor once again felt discouraged, as if he regretted the trade. He was optimistic, yet hoping that things would turn around. And they did. New England started to emerge from the shadows with close wins, but also close losses. Near the end of the season, New England suffered a humiliating loss to Chicago only to narrowly beat Edmonton in the next game, surprising almost everyone. Igor mentioned that "I wanted us to save all of our energy for a stealth attack on Edmonton. Wolves surprise when you least expect it." The strategy was an interesting one, but it wasn't enough for New England to be guaranteed a playoff spot. The team narrowly missed out on their opportunity.
Igor remains hopeful for next season with the Wolfpack.
When asked what his favorite moment was, Igor was quick to respond. "The last game against the Chiefs. We already had won. I wanted to score just one goal against them near the end to prove to myself that this was all worth it. Just wanted to say "screw all of you" to my former team. Not that I hate them or anything."
And for Igor at least, it was. Igor scored on Tegernako for the final goal of the Wolfpack's S55 season. This was the moment he had dreamt about all season. And it had finally come.
Igor had gotten his revenge. As for what came next, Igor just replied with "I'm looking forward to more. Let's be even better next season! Locker room howl guys! AAAAAAAWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!"
Awoooo indeed.
As for the team's thoughts on Igor joining them, most in the locker room who commented said some variation of "we tolerate Igor". Most commonly, the team complained that Igor was very much of a "hugger" and hugged his teammates way too often for their own comfort. They also complained that Igor was bit aggressive when angry as well. Nonetheless, everyone agreed that Igor was very enthusiastic and dedicated to the team, giving the locker room a new interesting personality. Igor agreed, stating that he wouldn't have it any other way.
