Keygan's post draft brutally honest presser.

(This post was last modified: 09-16-2020, 08:05 PM by Keygan.)

I tried doing one of these in the NSFL once but realized I don't really care much for the NSFL so we'll try it here.

I'm doing a presser with the stipulation that I cannot lie about any question asked of me, how can you tell? I don't know I guess you'll just have to trust me.

But from here on out let the questions flow.

I never really tuned into the juniors streams this year, never really had much incentive to. Thankfully so because I never once had to listen to the Berserker's goal horn when it was JAJA DingDong. I don't even dislike the song. I think it's kinda catchy, but I could definitely see it getting tiring after 150-200 iterations of it.

How often do people outside the organization apply for managerial positions with another team. I have some really good internal candidates in @Nokazoa and @boom but unfortunately for me, they are honouring their commitments to their SMJHL teams as well as the SHL Head Office in Boom's case.

I have spoken to a couple managers post-draft and supposedly Rikki was on one or two "Do Not Draft" lists which I never really understood. Maybe personal differences with players in the locker room, maybe people still don't like what he supposedly did in the PBE? I have never once had an issue with the user behind Rikki in @andrewwarren13 I have only ever had positive interactions with him. On a side comment, WOW, 52 is late for a third round pick, I forget how far we've come in terms of size of the league.

I would call my favourite Petrov Vladmir, purely based on the fact that him and I spend the most time together. There isn't often a weekend in which he and I are on voice chat playing Borderlands 3, DOTA: Underlords, Risk of Rain 2 or Heroes of the Storm.

With that being said I can genuinely say I know all but one(?) of the Petrovs and I really do like all of them.

You could probably sway me two to three positions on either side of every team, there honestly isn't a ton to separate us much now. You could easily convince me that New Orleans should be first, you could convince me that Calgary just from longevity is first. I hope no one takes offense to the list, as I say this genuinely you could ask me this again in a week and you might see my answer change, this list is so fluid outside of probably Buffalo that I wouldn't put much stock in it.

A lot of the guys earlier on the list have been doing it a long time and have shown sustained success which is what I believe makes a great management team. The toughest one for me is probably Baltimore at 8, JR had a great dynasty with West Kendall in the 40's and if I re-did the list I would probably end up ranking him higher.

A lot of teams like Texas, Los Angeles and New England would have probably been in single digits if you asked last season too, @dankoa was really good for a long time, @Wasty was here for 41 seasons and @Ace has an insane peak just a couple seasons ago.

Yeah, we were really fortunate to land a couple guys that we think have the potential to be impact players going forward. I genuinely did not think we would be making picks last night, only having pick 52 going into the night I was fairly confident we would be passing, to the point of not really being around during the first round cause I was making dinner. After I got back from making dinner for my fiance though I update my sheet and noticed some really interesting names falling further than I thought they would and so that combined with a somewhat uninspiring SMJHL draft this morning I made some moves for a mid-third pick to grab Bane and then used my own third to snag Rikki Petrov and considering the mindset I went into the draft with I am really impressed with what we came out of it with.

09-13-2020, 07:43 PMdankoa Wrote: What are your thoughts on the LAP trade a season on given everything that’s happened since

If I knew what I know now, going into that trade, I wouldn't have accepted it, and that's not a slight on the players we got back. Otrebor and JT are both great locker room guys, and I have genuinely loved having them on the team, but with no cup win and no extension for Morgan I would in hindsight call it arguably my worst trade ever.

That being said, the trade is bad because Morgan left, yes. But when making the trade we had the impression that we could afford both Toner and Otrebor leaving because of how much of our core was locked in for the foreseeable future (Maybe not contractually but I'm sure you can relate as a manager when you have those few guys that it is just a given that they will re-sign with you.) We had what we thought was five defensemen locked in, as well as 7 forwards and three really talented prospects in the wings. Our roster was "locked in" to the point of we didn't feel a strong need to continue stockpiling prospects after three successful drafts stocking the cupboards.

What in hindsight made this trade hurt a lot more was the unforeseen loss of McIntyre and Tuck, purely because we don't really have a ton of assets to replace the position at this point outside of trading prospects which I am not really keen on doing, though success at the highest level is always what is most important.

-

09-13-2020, 08:12 PMFlappyGiraffe Wrote: What was going on with the leaving home posts from some longtime blizzards?

I feel like some people think something super dramatic happened, I think ultimately it was just a differing of opinions with McIntyre. I can't think of anything I did to run him off the team, maybe he would disagree with that statement though. I have no hard feelings, we are all our own people and sometimes people disagree with each other, I really had hoped that McIntyre would retire a Blizzard and I think he did too and unfortunately that is not going to be the case.

Tuck was just a brutal miscommunication that I think we can both admit at this point got blown out of proportion but after the reprimands had been made he felt as though the damage was done and it was best he move on. I wish him well, I still consider him a friend and would have loved Tuck to retire a member of the Blizzard but he again is his own person and if he truly feels how he does about me then it absolutely is his right to leave unfortunately.

I still don't know Seattle's final roster, but from what I can capture in a glance they're lacking the forward depth necessary to compete with the Edmonton's, Calgary's, and the New Orlean's of the world. I think the West at the end of next season barring any trades will be something along the lines of:

Edmonton
New Orleans
Calgary
Texas
Winnipeg
Seattle
Los Angeles
Minnesota
San Francisco

I could see New Orleans falling further dependant on the re-signing of Cain and Kirkby, they were two pretty important pieces of their puzzle. I think Edmonton stays on top but without the distance from New Orleans they had next season.

09-13-2020, 08:36 PMhhh81 Wrote: Considering the changes to cap structure and contract rules, do you think Atlanta and Seattle should have been granted a chance to grandfather their GMs into HTCs, rather than carrying an effective cap penalty of $1-4 million into this next season?

I could see the arguments from both sides, but in the past it has always been that they have to trade for their home town discounts for the first six seasons, if I were a manager of one of those two teams and looking to compete I would talk to the players that were with franchises for a long time and entertain the idea of a sign and trade to acquire a home town discount. I wouldn't refer to it as a cap penalty though, you have to account for the extra prospects teams have that they're paying as well.

Wasty has also been a great graphic designer on the site for a long time, but I haven't seen his work much in the last three of four seasons.

Turd's took the graphics section by storm again and I love his work too, but I don't know how much he is around anymore.

and finally Noka, you've improved leaps and bounds since you initially started, and I genuinely believe the work you're showing off recently in Edmonton's discord are a totally different style than anything Wasty, Karey or Turd have done, but you do what you do so incredibly well. I'm going to sound ridiculous saying this because everyone always complained about this in regards to STHS but I think the biggest flaw in my experience with FHM would have to be the lack of variance team to team, with Simon T there was always that weird outside chance that some totally out of the blue team snags the last playoff slot, but I don't really feel as though that's possible with FHM and that's become more and more evident with the fact that people are scoring higher than ever before on season predictions. In the past it was like "Oh fuck yeah, I got 6 on predictions" and now it's almost disappointing to get less than 10 or 11.

In less words FHM to an extent makes the regular season somewhat a drag for those lower ranked teams cause it's just a means to an end.

09-13-2020, 07:49 PMNokazoa Wrote: Why do you do what you do?

I do it because I enjoy it, which wasn't the cause even just a week ago. You can ask @SDCore just last week I was one or two comments from hanging up the suit as a manager, but sometimes you gotta take those deep breaths and reassess why you're doing it, if you do not enjoy management don't stay out of obligation because in all honesty, you're probably doing the team an overall disservice.

I mean I think it's nice because it's a breath of fresh air with a lot of teams, but it's a shame how a lot of the new manager had to come to be. I would be incredibly frustrated if my manager got fired for a mistake caused by someone doing their job poorly, and no I'm not talking about Head Office. I'd also be incredibly frustrated if my manager just rage quit because someone didn't like their trade. I really respect @dankoa for admitting that management was something that was becoming a bit too time-consuming for his liking and stepping down because he felt it was best for the franchise.

I feel for the head office too because a lot of these postings came at really inopportune times.

I guess in summary I love the opportunity to meet new people through management, but it's a shame that some of the turnover came from less than ideal situations.

09-14-2020, 04:47 AMTomen Wrote: biggest missed opportunity in your career as a GM be it a miss in the draft when you could have had them/missed trade/ missed FA signing ?

Without a doubt in my mind my biggest miss in the draft has to be in S46

I was still in Montreal at the time I’m guessing in an advisory role or something of the sorts so I was really familiar with the players activity levels in the locker room, we had picks 50 and 54 in the draft and as we got to pick 50 I had two players without a doubt that I wanted on the team and they were both from Montreal, but @TommySalami had recently joined the management team in Edmonton and we had started grooming him for the eventual GM position and he felt really strongly about a different player. I decided to allow him to choose his guy at 50 and I’d pick one of my guys at 54.

Both players I wanted have turned out to be great players in the league, and sadly Tommy boy’s pick ended up refusing to sign with us because we were the Blue Toy Dog’s or BTD’s for short. In retrospect it’s easy to say “Yeah I shouldn’t have let Tommy make the pick and I would have gotten my guy” but who knows how the whole scenario pans out if I select the initial player at 50, maybe we wouldn’t have gotten one of my favourite players in the league in @“James Truong” at 54.

If everything else plays out the same and we still would have gotten James at 54, I’d call not drafting my initial target at 50 is my biggest regret as a manager so far, but life has no guarantees and ultimately I can still say I’m happy with how that draft turned out overall.

09-14-2020, 07:56 AMjRuutu Wrote: 1. What do you think about players who want to test free agency and maybe even end up leaving for free?

It is honestly one of the only things players have control over is who they play for, and often times it is avoidable if you can provide whatever it is the player seems to be looking for in free agency.

With that being said I wouldn’t ever compromise my teams success to please the wants of one individual, Hockey is a team game and I’ll always value team success over individual.

Sure, it blows losing an important piece, especially for free but it’s the nature of the business and my players don’t owe me anything, they would still have a team without me, I wouldn’t have a team without them.

09-14-2020, 07:56 AMjRuutu Wrote: 2. Scholar and gentleman, are these two words in the top-5 words that come to your mind when thinking about Ensio Kalju?

Ensio Kalju was great his time with the Blizzard, I have no issues with anything that happened while a member of the Blizzard, he ended up traded and we netted an incredible piece with the returns in Finn Rhys.

I’d say Independent, Gritty, Hard-Nosed, and Team Player as my five words.

You’re definitely not last, because your player got to a respectable TPE level, I would probably call Joester the worst Co-GM of all time he peaked at like 220 TPE, the pick didn’t make sense at the time or in hindsight. Had no idea what the plan was there.

09-16-2020, 01:18 PMLordBirdman Wrote: Assuming the team hits on its picks and has competent asset management, how many seasons (or months IRL) is it going to take for SFP to be competitive?

I guess it depends on your definition of hitting a pick, so for the sake of this argument that a hit refers to 1500 TPE as a first-rounder, 1200 as a second-rounder and 900 as a third-round pick. I would say they need probably 6 seasons to starting wavering on that playoff bubble and closer to 7-8 to be truly competitive. I think the Kryyst trade really hurt them both long and short term and it would be a little faster if not for that trade. I'd be willing to listen on every piece that I haven't sent down as hard as that is to do and I'd follow a plan similar to TBB where I can build a core of a short range of seasons IE 55/56/57 prospects to have a nasty core in 6 seasons time.

-

09-16-2020, 01:55 PMNhamlet Wrote: Which team is most unlikely to be successful at their rebuild and why?

Ehhh, it's really hard for me to say as a completely outside source, I don't know the inner workings of each and every locker room but from an outside perspective often times I find myself scratching my head at the thought process behind certain trades being made.

I think Mika Mayfield is a great player, one of the better players in the league, but how much sense does it make to give up a first when the rest of your division is making playoffs over you even if you make the acquisition.

Again though I can't speak to the inner workings of each locker room, maybe Mayfield is a locker room game-changer and the management in Minnesota felt as though their locker room needed a true shot in the arm in order to keep the prospects interested.

-

09-16-2020, 02:13 PMdankoa Wrote: Which of the current “competitive” teams do you see having to enter a full-on rebuild based on their future outlook at this point?

The kind of horrifying thing is that none of the teams that were in the playoffs last year have a bad future outlook. All of them have nice prospect pools or young players coming up, all of them have great managers that seem to have really high levels of knowledge in regards to asset management. I think the highly competitive teams are highly competitive for a good reason and that's because of their management teams, they draft well, they manage their assets well, they know how to maximize the potential of their rosters. If I were forced to answer I'd had to just spit a guess, I'd say Calgary? But has Calgary ever been through a full-on rebuild? Not that I'm aware of at least.

-

09-16-2020, 02:27 PMFlappyGiraffe Wrote: where did you have Gary Grease ranked during the S38 SMJHL draft? iirc you were montreal co-gm

I wish I could give you a straight answer, but I have none of my scouting sheets from way back when, I was too stupid to use Google sheets at the time to centralize all of it. I'm looking back at the draft post and the only thing I knew for sure was that we wanted @teztify in the first round and we desperately needed a goalie so we took @treant in the second, outside of that I could not even begin to hint at the process.

-

09-16-2020, 06:53 PMZema Wrote: For the 2 seasons that I've been on this site actively, The Blizzards has had a rap of being awful at scouting. I remember getting drafted in the S55 class where you guys didn't bother reaching out at all until about 24h before through a message that can be summed up as: "Tell us about yourself?"
Do you actually believe this is the right way to go about scouting players for your SHL team, or are you simply not bothered much by the scouting process?

We had a defined need in both drafts since you've been on the site, we have had incredible success drafting forwards as BAP or Best Available Player, we have found a system that has worked incredibly well for us in the past. We've continually identified later round picks that become eventual high value players, look at Guy LeGrande in the 2nd round of season 54.

I've recently hired @hockeyfan on as my new assistant manager, as he loves the idea of individualized conversations with each prospect. I've done the past three maybe even four seasons without needing to talk to entire classes of players. As a team that picks regularly in the 13-18 range why would we spent time talking to a player we already know for fact is going before our pick.

As for 24 hours pre-draft how often do we see players disappear right before the draft? It's incredibly value to know a player is checking into the site pre-draft, I want someone actively checking the site and that's something that I can learn in a 24 hours period pre-draft.

I think it's funny to be referred to as "Awful at scouting" though, as we're routinely told we've gotten incredibly valuable players later in drafts, but to each their own I guess.
