SHL's Best by Draft Number (24-15)
#1
(This post was last modified: 09-20-2020, 01:42 PM by BasedMinkus.)

Pick #24 - Leafer Reilly (Season 32) - West Kendall Platoon

I debated here between Reilly and Rutuu but character issues and consistency dragged Rutuu down just a bit. Reilly ranks 2nd in points with 430 and 1st in goals with 177. His best season was season 41 where he put up 51 points in 50 games, his only season with over a point per game. While Reilly was never nominated for an individual award, he did take home 3 challenge cups including one with Buffalo in Season 46. A good player who knew how to win, takes the spot on the list.

Honourable mention: Jorma Ruutu (516 points)

Pick #23 - Colton Hagan (Season 36) - Texas Renegades

Pick 23 is a very weak pick to choose from as there aren't a lot of high scoring players or players that accomplished much. Hagan's point per game total puts him on this list. Hagan is 3rd in points with 294 and goals with 138 all while playing half the games of the two people ahead of him for both. While Hagan has no cups or individual awards to show for his skill, he did finish a season as a 3rd team All Star. Very slim pickings here and Hagan is the best of what was available.

Honourable mention: Mark Longford

Pick #22 - Jack Durden (Season 25) - New England Wolfpack

A legend in the SHL, Durden was one pick game away from 1000. While he didn't hit that career milestone, Mr. 999 was a fantastic player. Durden finished at the top of this pick number in points with 781 and first in goals with 287. Durden is a 1 time Challenge Cup Champion, and a 1 time Playoff MVP. Great career.

Honourable mention: Scott Stevens (Top DMan)

Pick #21 - Yuri Kulikov (Season 7) - Manhattan Rage

There are some very good players who had great longevity in this league at pick 21, but Kulikov's short career provided more excitement than any other player at this pick. Kulikov played 8 seasons in the league and yet ranks 4th in both goals (130) and points (279). If you extrapolate his statistics to the top player in points picked at this position, Kulikov would have been a 300 goal scorer. A short career for Kulikov but a very memorable one.

Honourable mention: Zander Rhys (641 points)

Pick #20 - Thomas Duddy (Season 6) - Vancouver Nightmare

One of the best players in Seattle Riot history is also one of the better stars at the time. Very quiet off the ice, Duddy let his play speak for him and night in and night out he proved just how good he could be. Duddy finished his career with 196 goals and 437 points in 559 games played. Duddy did not win any awards but he was a key cog in the SHL throughout his entire career.

Honourable mention: Dean Colt

Pick #19 - Brian Morley (Season 14) - Los Angeles Panthers

Another generational talent getting taken fairly late in the draft. Morley was one of the heroes of the Panthers franchise for 15 seasons and was a key offensive threat in the SHL. His 265 goals finds him in 51st all time in goal scoring and his points totals finds him in the top 75 all time. Hardware wise, Morley has 1 Challenge Cup, 4 Gold Medals with Team Canada and is the owner of two Jay McDonald trophies for most goals in a season. A tremendous talent and an easy pick here.

Honourable mention: Edwin Ask

Pick #18 - Chris McZehrl (Season 8) - West Kendall Platoon

Whether you love the guy or despise the guy, McZehrl is one of the best players to ever lace up a pair of skates. McZehrl is one of the few players to be over a point per game as he finished his career with 783 points in 764 games. His 783 points put him 20th all time, as do his goal totals while playing a lot fewer games than many guys on this list. McZehrl is a 2 time Challenge Cup Champion, 1 time MVP, 2 time Dar winner, 2 time McDonald winner and a 4 time All-Star. Very few players in general are better than McZ and he was the easy choice at this pick.

Honourable Mention: Brendan Gibbon

Pick #17 - Aaron Wilson (Season 47) - Hamilton Steelhawks

A guys who has the potential to be one of the greatest players of all time, Aaron Wilson has proven a knack for getting the job done. Wilson currently has 374 points in 350 games while also already potting in 154 goals. The fact that he has scored at a .5 per game pace is astounding and he has a great shot at being a top 5 goal scorer of all time if he stays healthy. Wilson is a 2 time Challenge Cup Champion, 2x All SHL team and a 1 time Mexico nominee which somehow shows how underrated he is. Wilson has the skill to be one of the best and the sky is the limit.

Pick #16 - Kain Webb (Season 5) - Calgary Dragons

Kain Webb is another all-time great taken in the 2nd round. Kain Webb ended his career with 248 goals and 566 points in just 554 games! A tremendous total and puts him as one of the few true greats to average over a PPG in his career. Webb is also a multiple time Challenge Cup champion, capturing his first two in back to back seasons. Webb is a one time Mexico winner, a rookie of the year winner,a razov winner, a khan winner and a THREE time scoring champion. Webb is a true legend and one that doesn't get enough credit.

Pick #15 - Victor Marius (Season 39) - Buffalo Stampede

Marius has had a tremendous 16 year career so far and an easy choice at pick #15. Marius ranks 3rd in points (639) and 2nd in goals (294) while playing about 200 less games than the guys ahead of him on that list. He already ranks 53rd all time in points and 34th all time in goals with one more season left to go to rise in the ranks. Marius is a 2 time Challenge Cup Champion, 1 time Dar winner, 1 time Khan winner, 1 time Razov winner and a 1 time 2nd team all star. A very good career for a future hall of famer.

Next instalment we will look at picks 14-6.

Shame the series started at #30oa. Now I'll never know if I was the best #39oa ever. :(

But otherwise I'm loving this series. Smile
