Season Review

The Detroit Falcons possess both the curse and blessing of being one of the youngest teams in the league. Having in total just 5 players from S55 or later. And this pretty accurately reflects why the Falcons season has gone the way it has. And by "way it has" I mean just only 13 wins, 34 losses, and 3 overtime losses, and just overall being the worst team in the league. Though as mentioned, Detroit has without a doubt, one of the brightest futures moving further. Which can be further seen through their individual player stats thoughout the season. Though it's extremely important to mention that these are not the complete stats for each player as Detroit experienced a ton of roster and lineup moves during the season. And furthermore, the lineup is purely chosen from the lineup Detroit used while batting to stay alive in the playoffs. So with that out of the way here's the stats.

Playoffs:

So with Detroit's regular season stats out of the way, let's move on to the Falcon's playoff push. The Detroit Falcons entered the playoffs as the 12th seed in the wild card. Their opponent, the 29-17-4 Anchorage Armada had the third strongest record in the league, the only reason they would miss an early bye being that they played in the same division as the Vancouver Whalers. Regardless, the Falcons still looked to create a giant upset as they entered the playoffs with very little to actually lose.

Game 1:

Game 1 of the series was one filled with high offense and scoring. The first goal was scored just 2 minutes into the first frame as Theo Kondos put the puck between the blockers of Thor Odison during an Anchorage power play caused from a Daedalus James tripping penalty. The next two goals would come in quick succession, with 9 minutes left in the first frame, Detriot equalized as the veteran Kolja Kekkonen evened the score with a blistering shot from the point. Though not even two minutes later, Anchorage would take the lead with a goal of their own from the veteran center Santtu Räsänen. The next goal came midway through the 2nd period as Vladimir Petrov scored off a simple rebound and flick to put the puck into the back of the net. Detroit would strike next with 5 minutes left in the period off a breakaway scored by Mikhail Borisnoff. In the third period Detroit would tie the game with 12 minutes left in the frame off a Daedalus James goal from just above the left faceoff point. Though unfortunately for the Falcons this game would end in the ultimate heartbreak as Anchorage would score the final goal to take the lead created with just 1 second remaining on the clock. The goal was scored off a TURG TURG redirect from in front of the net.

Game 2:

Game 2 was a much more relaxed game overall, though that didn't prevent Detroit from taking an early lead. Just a minute and 11 seconds into the first frame, after continuous pressure in front of the Anchorage net. Yngve Simonsson scored off a rebound to put the Falcons in the lead. Though this story doesn't end well for the Falcons again as with less than a minute left in the first frame Anchorage would tie the game after an Pojo Biscuit goal. And the final goal of the game would come in the second frame as TURG TURG would score his second goal of the series to give Anchorage the lead.

Game 3:

During game 3 of the series, the action was at an all time stand-still. Though in the end the Falcons were finally able to steal a game in the series after Detroit goalie Thor Odison managed to completely shut out Anchorage. Detroit's lone and single goal was scored by who else other than their lead scorer Daedalus James.

Game 4:

Anchorage returned the favor in this game after their own goalie, Snoochie Stratton, created his own shutout, granted the Anchorage goalie only faced a total of 15 shots though nevertheless still impressive. Though for Detroit it was heartache again, Thor Odison was in the midst of his own 30+ shot shutout that had just reach overtime. Though after just over 3 minutes, a slap-shot from Pojo Biscuit at the blue line simultaneously ended both the goalie's dreams and the game.

Game 5:

Detroit would experience their last and final heartbreak of the season that began as an early goal from Anchorage skater Vladimir Petrov just  9 minutes into the game. Though late into the first period and early in the second it appeared as the Falcons had begun to rally. With goals from Mikhail Borisnoff, Kolja Kekkonen, and Cenek Iqbal all alike, the Falcons were up a comfortable 3-1. Though just like in games past, the Falcons could rarely hold their leads. Anchorage would go on to score 4 goals unanswered in the remaining 35 minutes of play. The goals would be created by Lemo Phil, Pojo Biscuit, Michael Withecheck, and Slava Petrov. Who would all gain their first goals of the season, besides of course the team leader in playoff points, Pojo Biscuit.

Review:

In the end the Falcons playoff run will in large part be forgotten due to the lack of any giant upset or anything like that. When the 12th seed is going up against the top team, there isn't exactly any less expectations for the team, either you likely lose, or a giant upset is born. Though I feel the Falcons managed to actually achieve something new in that while they didn't create any big upset, they didn't exactly really lose either. I mean obviously they literally, though after just barely losing each game in extremely close fashion, what exactly is there to complain about?
