S57 SHL Draft Recap

Another SHL draft has come and gone, and all the SHL teams have exciting new up and coming players that they can look forward to seeing on their teams in the coming seasons (except for Toronto who were quoted saying “S57 ain’t shit” and passed on their only pick of the draft in round 4). Lots of talent was up for grab, and here’s a quick glance at all of our S57 draftees!

Round 1

1 .  New England Wolfpack - Jonathan Granström - Halkohol

Detroit Center Granstrom snagged all the glory and pressure that comes with being selected 1st overall. Currently ranked 9th in TPE, Granstrom snagged a respectable, and perhaps even impressive 15 points playing a 4th line role for a rebuilding Detroit this season. It will be interesting to see what he can do in his second season with more ice time and opportunities.

2 . Minnesota Monarchs - Arsene Leclerc - spooked

Rookie defenceman Arsene Leclerc had a very good season with Anaheim, scoring 7 goals and adding 22 assists on the backend while facing top competition, playing top pairing minutes. 2nd in TPE in his class, the Monarchs have what looks to be a future SHL star on their hands.

3 . Los Angeles Panthers - Sean Gatez - SewingWithNancy

Drafted 3rd overall to the Panthers was Maine defenceman Sean Gatez. He scored 3 goals and added 5 assists on the backed for the Trees and is has been earning at a good pace, ranked tied for 16th in his draft. The 1st of 3 defencemen drafted by the Panthers, he looks to be a vital part of their blueline in the future.

4 . New Orleans Specters - Vlastislav Malik - Leafs1997

The Kelowna Knights right winger was the 4th pick of the draft. Malik finished the seasons with 12 points, scoring 4 goals and 8 assists and was a physical presence while playing 3rd line minutes, racking up 90 hits. Malik was one of the top earners in the draft, ranked 7th in his class, and will look to further improve his offensive output and become an important power forward for NOLA in a few seasons.

5 . Winnipeg Jets - Dwayne Gretzky - 3lewsers

The first of Winnipeg’s 2 picks at #5 was Berserkers left winger Dwayne Gretzky. While only playing 8 minutes per game he was able to still rack up 12 points on the season, and 4 more in 17 playoff games as the zerkers came close to defending their title. With much of the Newfoundlads forwards graduating, he’ll see a big uptick in his ice time and his points. Ranked 14th in TPE, the Winnipeg Jets have a promising young Right Winger on their hands. Hopefully their head coach doesn’t grossly misuse him with a lack of icetime and proper usage of teammates and generate completely unnecessary trade rumours that- what, wrong Jets? Oh sorry.

6 . Winnipeg Jets - Freyja Hellstrom - Calliope

With their 2nd of two back to back picks in the 1st round, the Jets selected another winger, Hellstrom. Hellstrom put up an impressive 21 points in Carolina, and added 3 more points in their playoff run. A top earner in this draft, ranked 6th, the Jets can look forward to Freyja becoming a key part of their squad in the future.

7 . San Francisco Pride - Ruggs McOooh - Ruggsy

The San Francisco pride drafted the 8th ranked player Ruggs McOooh. Ruggs put up 11 points on the season, but his real impact came defensively, notching a 67 DGR in his rookie season with Colorado, which is quite impressive. He’ll look to eventually have the same big defensive impact for the Pride.

8 . Los Angeles Panthers - Jari Heikkinen - Allegiant

With their 2nd pick in the first round the Panthers selected Finnish defenceman Jari Heikkinen, whow as ranked well at 13th in his draft class in TPE. Heikkinen put up a very impressive 7 goals and 13 assists for expansion team Quebec while playing 2nd line minutes. Panthers fans will be excited to soon see him producing even more offence in the coming seasons for Quebec as they grow into a strong team in the next few seasons.

9 .  New England Wolfpack - Brennan Huff - Jayrome

Brennan Huff was New England’s second selection of the draft. Playing 3rd line minutes he put up 6 goals and 6 assists and earning at a good pace at rank 18 in his class, he’ll look to up those numbers in the coming seasons.

10 . New Orleans Specters- Jon St. Ark - Arkz

NOLA was able to snag the top ranked prospect in TPE at the draft with Jon St. Arkz ranked #1. His team, Vancouver, were also ranked #1 to finish the season as they were the reigning 4 star cup champions. It’s rare for a goalie to go 1st overall, but boy did St. Ark deserve it, putting up absolutely stellar numbers. He was able to snag 19 wins and only 4 losses during the season, and while some of that can be attributed to the powerhouse of a team he had playing in front of him, he still was able to put up 3 shutouts and a .930 save %. It seems like the Specters will continue the tradition of recent seasons into the future of having one of the best goalies in the league.

11 . Atlanta Inferno - Pablo Salvatici - Jepox

Newly created Atlanta made an unsurprising pick at #11, drafting Pablo Salvatici, who coincidentally was also ranked 11th in TPE in his class. Salvatici put up 16 points playing 4th line minutes for Anchorage which is pretty impressive. Word is that he is very close with Atlanta’s GM and so looks to play a large role in the future of the organization. Just a rumour though.

12 . New Orleans Specters - Cian McFelter - Titan

With their 2nd pick of the draft, New Orleans picked up Cian McFelter, who had an astounding rookie season in the SMJHL, putting up 25 points for the Knights. Ranked 26th in tpe, a respectable amount, he will look to continue that success next season in a larger role with the Knights.

13 . Manhattan Rage - Matty Sandeen - TheBigSandeenie

The great Sandeenie, the swedish defenceman hailing from Newfoundland was drafted 13th overall by Manhattan. He put up 8 goals and 5 assists playing on the 3rd pairing of runner ups Newfoundland this season. His role will be increasing next season and the skilled defenceman will look to improve his numbers with a much bigger role next season. Ranked 22nd in TPE earning amongst his class, Manhattan will be enthused to see how he grows.

14 . Calgary Dragons - Luukas Lilja - Retuperkele

The Dragons selects playmaking center Luukas Lilja of the Kraken as their first round selection. Lilja showed great vision, putting up 17 assists on the season along with potting a couple of goals. Lilja is ranked 20th in his class for TPE, and will perhaps look to add some more goal scoring prowess to go with his amazing playmaking abilities.

15 . Edmonton Blizzard - Rude Sniff - Dude

Top earning right winger Rude Sniff was taken 15th overall by the Blizzard. The Nevada winger is currently ranked 3rd in his class for TPE, and might look to be a bit of a steal at 15th overall. Playing 4th line minutes he was able to put up 10 points, but with his fats growth, he will look to surpass those numbers in the next few seasons.

16 .  New England Wolfpack - Bas O'Bigber - Sopath

The 3rd of the Newfoundlads to be drafted in the 1st round, Bas O’Bigber had a fantastic season with the Berserkers, putting up 9 goals and 13 asists for 22 points. He’ll have the opportunity to take on a bigger role next season and will look to become one of Newfoundlands primary point producers. Ranked 10th in TPE in his class, The wolfpack will be excited and probably a bit shocked that such a promising player was still available for them with their 3rd pick of the 1st round at pick 16.

17 . Buffalo Stampede - Anton Mihailov - Mr. Finland

With Buffalo’s 1st pick of the draft, they selected Anton Mikhailov who played 48 games on the left wing for Detroit and snagged 1 goal and 7 assists. Not the most impressive season given the 3rd line ice time, but a top earner and ranked 4th in his class, he will look to quickly improve in the next few seasons.
18 . New Orleans Specters - Robert Feltersnatch - Roamus

Last but not least in the 1st round, NOLA selected Kelowna Defenceman Feltersnatch. Felternsatch put up 4 goals and 7 assists on the Knights blueline. Ranked 19th, he was a good earner and a good add to NOLA’s impressive selection of 1st round draft picks.

Round 2

19 . San Francisco Pride - Jarmo Kekalainen - TheFlash

With the 1st pick of the 2nd round, the Pride select Jarmo Kekalainen. The Colorado Left Winger was able to put up 4 goals and 14 assists for the Raptors while playing 3rd line minutes for them. He is ranked 15th in his class for TPE, which is promising for the Pride.

20 . Seattle Argonauts - Yanno Rosejac - Demolish

Surprisingly the Argonauts did not make their 1st selection until the 2nd round, as you’d usually expect expansion franchises to have a decent amount of top picks for the first couple seasons. Even more surprising might be that they still snagged a top 5 pick in Yanno Rosejac who ranks 5th in their draft class. Seattle will definitely take that. The 2nd goalie taken in the draft (being a goalie might be the reason he dropped so far, and by might I mean definitely was the reason), Rosejac got a lot of development time, being the starting goalie for a young Colorado team. He managed to grab 18 wins for his team, with a .897 save %.

21 . New Orleans Specters - Farley Hank - Beebob

The 1st of a couple of back to back picks, the 4th and 5th this year for NOLA, they selected top 12th ranked Farley Hank. The defenceman put up 6 goals and 11 assists for 17 points for Anaheim, a very good year for the rookie. Another very good pick who slipped to 21, NOLA continued their very good draft.

22 . New Orleans Specters - Michael Scotch - sabremike

The 2nd of their back to backs, NOLA decided to select Michael Scotch, ranked 31st, another Anaheim defenceman. Scotch put up 12 assists and was a good physical presence on the backend with 58 hits. NOLA seems to like their Anaheim defencemen, and for good reason.

23 . Seattle Argonauts - Ren-Ekelemchi Shimizu-Okoli - ProjectSaint

At pick 23, Seattle selected the player with the longest name of the draft, Ren-Ekelemchi Shimizu-Okoli. RESO put up 13 points on Colorado’s blueline on their 2nd pairing, and ranked 30th in his draft class. He’ll look to have a career that matches the grandeur of his name.

24 . Baltimore Platoon - Rob Wright - Snuffalupagus

With a name not nearly as interesting, Rob Wright was the 24th pick of the draft. While his name may not be as flashy, he can at least say he was ranked higher as he was tied for 20th in his draft class. The 4th line Nevada center finished the season with 16 points and will look to increase those point totals with a bigge role next season.

25 . Winnipeg Jets - Vincent Mietitore - ViN

The 3rd goalie selected in the draft, and ranked tied for 16th overall in TPE, Mietitore had a good season in Anaheim, getting 19 wins on the season with a .900 save %. As he grows he will look to improve those numbers further.

26 . Los Angeles Panthers - Kai Ichinose - Gumbaman

The LA Panthers selected their 3rd defenceman of the draft to add to their growing number of impressive defensive prospects. Ichinose only played 14 games for the Kraken but did put up 3 points in those games, and another 3 in their playoff games. He’ll look to further impress in a full season next season, and Panthers management will be excited to see what he can do. He was ranked 41st in his draft class but his dedication and noted activity make him out to be a quick grower and a steal.

27 .  New England Wolfpack - Kaapo Kampaninen - marco999

New England selected Finnish center Kampaninen 27th overall. The 28th ranked player in the draft only played 28 games for Anaheim and only put up 3 points, but was good on the defensive end, putting up 20 hits and 25 blocked shots. He’ll look to prove the Wolves right with a full season under his belt next season.

28 .  Hamilton Steelhawks - Wen Baters - Water

With their 1st selection of the s57 draft, the reigning champs selected Wen Baters as their first pick. The Detroit Defenceman put up 17 points and 61 shot blocks for the Falcons this season, and was ranked 23rd in his draft class. He’ll probably dream of one day being a defenceman in the likes of Gabe Johnson or Samuel Michaud for the Steelhawks, and who wouldn’t?

29 . Atlanta Inferno - Bjorn Thornsen - frazzle14

Atlanta makes their 2nd pick of the draft, and it is Bjorn Thornsen who they selected 29th overall. The Anchorage right winger was afforded 2nd line minutes right of the bat and certainly did well with them, putting up 4 goals and 15 assists. The 36th ranked player in this years draft will hope to continue to be a Thornsen opponents sides (Christ, sorry) in the next few seasons.

30 . Minnesota Monarchs - Hugo Gronroos - Jedi

Hugo Groonros, backup goalie for the Berserkers, was taken by the Monarchs at number 30. He played in relief of beloved Newfoundland star goaltender and Dragons call up Cale Amundsen. He only featured in 11 games, putting up a 3-3-2 record with a .872 save %. He will look to improve those numbers next season as the bonafide #1 goalie in Newfoundland for the foreseeable future.

31 .  San Francisco Pride - Igor Petrov - TheCC

San Fran makes their 2nd of 4 picks in the 2nd round and where have we seen this before, it’s another Petrov. He joins his hockey crazed siblings from the s56 draft. Igor put up 10 goals and 10 assists on the wing for the Citadelles, and was ranked 28th overall in TPE for his draft class.

32 . San Francisco Pride - Mikael Koskinen - storm

The 2nd of back to back picks for the Pride, they select Mikael Koskinen from the Quebec City Citadelles. Koskinen put up 11 points while playing 3rd line minutes for Quebec, and in his draft class he was ranked 25th. Another winger for for San Fran who look to stock up on the position for the future, and Mikael will hope to continue to grow well with his young team.

33 . Edmonton Blizzard - Tyler Ward - Hordle

At 33rd overall, the Blizzard took, also from Quebec, 32nd ranked Tyler Ward. Playing as their backup goalie, Ward had an extremely successful season in Quebec. He played in 15 games and had a record of 9-3-1, with a very good save % of .923. The Blizzard may have a steal of a goalie on their hands here.

34 . Chicago Syndicate - Kian Hamilton Jr - linsangeles

At 34th overall, Chicago makes their first pick of the draft, and with it they select 34th ranked Kelowna center Kian Hamilton Jr. Hamilton was able to put up 2 goals and 13 assists for 15 points on Kelowna’s 3rd line, while also not being afraid to put his body on the line in defence, stepping in front of 52 shots for the Dinos this season. He’ll look to keep up his defensive attributes while also improving his offensive side of the game next season.

35 . New England Wolfpack - Bigga Foryu - UberBJ

The 6th goalie selected in the draft is Maines Bigga Foryu. Playing in the backup role for the Trees, he played in 11 games, garnering 6 wins and 5 losses with a .873 save % and 1 shutout. With more experience, the Timber can expect the young goalie to be Bigger for them in the coming season and take on some more games.

36 . San Francisco Pride - Sonata Diamente - MattyIce

With their 4th pick of the round, and the last pick of the round, the Pride, selected Colorado Center Sonata Diamente, who played in 45 games for the Raptors and put up a very respectable 17 points on their 4th line. The 37th ranked player in the draft, he will look to continue his good play into the next season with a larger role.

Round 3 and Beyond

37 . San Francisco Pride - Anna Ponecorvo - AnnaH

With the first pick of the 3rd round, and 2nd of another pair of back to backs for San Fran, they picked up Anna Ponecorva, Kelowna right winger. Anna picked up 3 goals and 6 assists while playing just under 12 minutes a night for the Falcons. Ranked 43rd, she’ll hope to continue growing and make a bigger impact for the Knights in the coming seasons.

38 . Baltimore Platoon - Victor Fedorov - Serpe x 13

Baltimore picked up Victor Fedorov with the 38th pick. The Center from St Louis, and 1st player from St louis to be drafted, had 3 goals and 13 assists during the season. He had an astounding number of hits and shot blocks, with 86 hits and 71 shot blocks on the season. The 27th ranked Fedorov will be a very good player in his own end for St Louis and Baltimore in the seasons to come.

39 . Hamilton Steelhawks - Tokkulu Lakkamaa - dmuda11

Hamilton’s 2nd pick of the draft came at pick 39 and with it they select Tokkulu Lakkamaa. Say that 5 times fast. The right winger played 11 minutes a night for the Armada and picked up 9 points for them as well. Ranked 23rd in TPE in the class, Hamilton look to be getting very good value from this later pick.

40 . Minnesota Monarchs - Jimmy Nutcluster - eagle_brand

At 40th overall, Jimmy Nutcluster was selected by the Monarchs. The Detroit defenceman put up 1 goal and 12 assists for 13 points on the season while playing for just under 18 minutes a night. He was ranked at 39th overall, almost exactly where he was picked.

43 . Winnipeg Jets - Marabelle Octive - Kagomewolf78

With the 43rd pick, after a few passes, the Jets selected Marabelle Octive of St Louis. Marabelle scored 9 goals and had 2 assists for St Louis and she was a force to be reckoned with physically, getting into 9 fights and laying 105 hits, her melodic name did not match her playing style at all. Players around the league will need to keep their heads on a swivel whenever the 40th ranked player is on the ice.

46 . Buffalo Stampede - Mikahail Borisnoff - Neadex

With their 2nd pick of the draft at pick number 46, Buffalo took Mikhail Borisnoff. Boris didn’t put up many points despite playing 12 minutes per game, only scoring 4 goals and 2 assist on the right wing. He will look to up those numbers next season. He is ranked 41st overall in his class.

47 . Atlanta Inferno -  Tres Sombreros - AL GRINGO

Tres Sombreros was taken 47th overall by Atlanta. While ranked high amongst the s57 class, He is actually a member of the s56 draft class. Despite being a slower developer, Atlanta has seen something in him that warranted a selection. The right winger scored 12 points on Quebec’s blueline this season, and looks to prove himself in the next few seasons.

51 . Edmonton Blizzard - Chad Alfa - MBHockey5

Edmonton drafted Chad Alfa, Berserker prospect, with the 51st pick of the draft. Alfa had a pretty good season on the Berserker blueline, scoring 14 points, and he was ranked 38th overall in the class. He could be a very late gem for the Blizzard if he pans out.

58 . Minnesota Monarchs - Kyle Murray - Jimmysmo27

The last but perhaps not the least pick in the draft was Kyle Murray who will be going to Minnesota. The Kraken right winger put up 13 points for Carolina while playing 15 minutes a night, and was ranked 44th in the draft class. Carolina’s track record for prospects has been pretty good so will be interesting to see how Murray does.

Congratulations to all the players drafted!

Rude Sniff is actually a defenseman that was playing out of position.

Good stuff Fest. S57 was top heavy but will probably be remembered as the year of the Goalie. After this season it is hard to imagine anyone else needing a goalie for a long time.
