an early look on the s59 smjhl entry draft

A small crop of players have risen to the SMJHL, or Draftable Free Agents as they're called. These are players who make themselves available to SMJHL teams before the Playoffs but after the Trade Deadline. This means these players are able to sign with a team, play out a portion of the regular season, and by extension, the playoffs, and then enter the entry draft for the next season after. These players are sought after by teams in the current season as a way to possibly bolster their bottom lines with fresher, and more determined talent who can improve into the playoffs. Essentially, teams add players at no real cost, with plenty to gain. Coming up to the draft, these same players tend to have more experience than fresh prospects of the same draft year, so you'll definitely see DFAs top the charts for the draft. With that said, let's take a look at the seven Draftable Free Agents:

Name: Robert E. O. Speedwagon
Birthplace: Uk London, Great Britain
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 195lbs
Position: Left Wing
Handedness: Right

Offensive Ratings
Screening: 7
Getting Open: 8
Passing: 9
Puckhandling: 11
Shooting Accuracy: 11

Shooting Range: 8
Offensive Read: 8

Defensive Ratings
Checking: 9
Hitting: 8
Positioning: 10
Stickchecking: 10

Shot Blocking: 8
Faceoffs: 5
Defensive Read: 8

Physical Ratings
Acceleration: 8
Agility: 10
Balance: 10
Speed: 10
Stamina: 12
Strength: 9
Fighting: 5

Speedwagon is a relatively solid player. He boasts great puck work and is able to rip a shot when necessary. It definitely seems as though Speedwagon is a player who would rather keep the puck on his own stick over passing it off to another player. With a good puck distributing center, Speedwagon could definitely rack up points in the post-season. Speedwagon essentially boils down to what could eventually be a great offensive weapon for any team that picks him up. It is clear to see that he struggles when he doesn't have the puck. This is mostly in reference to defensive coverage. He'd do well to get stronger overall, as in the juniors he can get away with some things due to speed and stamina, that won't fly in the SHL.

Name: Ville Kurri
Birthplace: Finland Kemi
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 193lbs
Position: Right Wing
Handedness: Right

Offensive Ratings
Screening: 10
Getting Open: 8
Passing: 8
Puckhandling: 7
Shooting Accuracy: 5
Shooting Range: 7
Offensive Read: 7

Defensive Ratings
Checking: 10
Hitting: 9

Defensive Read: 11

Physical Ratings
Acceleration: 10
Agility: 10
Balance: 10
Speed: 10
Stamina: 11
Strength: 9
Fighting: 5

Right off the bat, anyone watching Ville Kurri is able to see that his huge prospect is amazing in his own zone. This towering right-winger is able to deliver huge hits to any forward looking for entry into his zone. It's surprising, newer players, especially defensive ones, have the tendency to get out of position when it comes to finishing checks and delivering hits, but it is clear that Kurri is ahead of some of his peers in that regard. Ville Kurri would be best paired with a really offensively gifted player, ideally one that could capitalize on possession, as Kurri is great at oppressing players in their own zone.  It will be interesting to see how much further Kurri grows in terms of his defensive skills, or if he branches outwards to be more offensively capable.

Name: Alexis Saint-Michel
Position: Right Wing
Handedness: Right
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 200lbs
Birthplace: Canada Trois-Rivieres, Quebec

Offensive Ratings
Screening: 9

Faceoffs: 5
Defensive Read: 9

Physical Ratings
Acceleration: 9
Agility: 9
Balance: 9
Speed: 9
Stamina: 13
Strength: 10

Fighting: 5

The French-Canadian Alexis Saint-Michel fresh out of is a bit of an odd one out of the players we've gone over thus far, where most players have an identifiable strength and weakness, Michel doesn't really have one. At the same time, he doesn't really excel particularly anywhere. He's a bit of an all-rounder, a jack of all trades but a master of none. There isn't much to say about this player, but it could be interesting to see how he's deployed based on what team drafts him. While a player like this off the bat may seem like something ordinary, a coach or manager with an eye for talent will be able to see the possibility for future growth, and his versatility means he can play just about anywhere. Penalty kill, power play, two way ability, and physical capabilities, he's got everything you need for what very well could be a future first liner.

Name: Ryuuji Kawashima
Birthplace: Japan Kashima
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 213lbs
Position: Center
Handedness: Left

Offensive Ratings
Screening: 5
Getting Open: 10
Passing: 11
Puckhandling: 11

Shooting Accuracy: 5
Shooting Range: 5
Offensive Read: 11

Defensive Ratings
Checking: 5

Positioning: 9
Stickchecking: 5
Shot Blocking: 5
Faceoffs: 11
Defensive Read: 10

Physical Ratings
Acceleration: 11
Agility: 11

Balance: 8
Speed: 11
Stamina: 11

Strength: 10
Fighting: 5

Kawashima is the first Center of the DFAs that we are covering. He appears to be a bit of a playmaker, using his great speed and agility to get into open positions to continue the momentum of a play. He's strong on the dot, allowing for his team to start with possession, which only furthers his strengths. He stands out when he's pulling the strings and creating setups for his teammates to finish. His playmaking is his bread and butter, and I personally think he would do well with another player on this list, Robert Speedwagon. If I were to pick out a weakness here, it's his incredibly poor ability to score on his own. Granted, he can help score goals, no one disagrees with this. But what happens when his linemates cant bury the puck? These are the dangers of having a more one-dimensional player. Especially as a centerman, you want this person to be able to do it all.

Name: Dane Von Gucci
Birthplace: Austria Kufstein
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 210lbs
Position: Left Defense
Handedness: Right

Offensive Ratings
Screening: 5
Getting Open: 8
Passing: 12
Puckhandling: 10
Shooting Accuracy: 10
Shooting Range: 9
Offensive Read: 12

Defensive Ratings
Checking: 8
Hitting: 8
Positioning: 8
Stick checking: 8
Shot Blocking: 8
Faceoffs: 5
Defensive Read: 8

Physical Ratings
Acceleration: 10
Agility: 9
Balance: 9
Speed: 9
Stamina: 12
Strength: 9
Fighting: 5

Dane von Gucci is a defenseman that is able to participate on the forecheck without sacrificing too much on the backcheck. A good, puck-moving defensemen, are worth their weight in gold, and Gucci weighs 210 pounds.

That's a lot of gold.

von Gucci is very capable when it comes to making the first pass. He's very mobile and is very capable of quarterbacking a power play. Obviously shines when the puck is on his stick. As a defender, he could certainly stand to grow in his own zone, but if he's paired with someone who can cover for his shortcomings there, you would have a very dangerous defensive duo.

Name: Daud Ramza
Birthplace: Uk London
Height: 6'
Weight: 205lbs
Position: Center
Handedness: Right

Offensive Ratings
Screening: 5
Getting Open: 11
Passing: 11
Puckhandling: 11

Shooting Accuracy: 7
Shooting Range: 6
Offensive Read: 11

Defensive Ratings
Checking: 11
Hitting: 5
Positioning: 7
Stickchecking: 11
Shot Blocking: 5
Faceoffs: 11
Defensive Read: 8

Physical Ratings
Acceleration: 5
Agility: 7
Balance: 5
Speed: 11
Stamina: 11
Strength: 11

Fighting: 5

The final player on our list, Daud Ramza, has a great blend of speed, stamina, and strength. He can definitely beat defenders with his exceptional fitness alone, but if that weren't enough, he also has very good stickhandling. He's great at delivering checks that opposing players can really feel. He's great at overturning pucks in the neutral zone as well. He isn't entirely great at shooting, so he usually resorts to scoring goals in tight with his stickhandling skills. You wont see him being a net-front presence, but he certainly is capable of running a power play when needed to, dishing out passes that you probably wouldn't think of doing. Hes also very good at stripping opponents of the puck. I think hed be a great addition to any team in the SMJHL at the moment.
