Quebec Game Recap: Part two [Double Media Week - Holidays Edition]
#1

[Double Media Week - Holidays Edition]
Well, Part one was a resounding success (aka I actually finished it) so I am back with part two! I will be recapping Quebec’s 11th through 20th game of the season, providing analysis as I see fit, and generally rambling about how great of a team we are.

Games 1 though 10 of the season saw Quebec go 9-1-0. Many of these wins were only by one goal, and the defense struggled at times, but the Citadelles’ high powered offense was more than enough to see the Owls pull ahead of the rest of the SMJHL. Without further ado, games 11 through 20:

Game 11, vs Detroit Falcons, 4-0 W

For a team as good as Quebec, strong defensive performances have been hard to come by. This made game 11 that much more impressive for the Quebecois team, as the shut out and dominated the Falcons 4-0. While the Falcons are not the best team in the league, they are still solid opposition and any kind of win over them is a good game. Quebec kept a constant pressure on the opposition netminder Valtteri Aalto, registering 47 shots on target throughout the game. Meanwhile, back up goalie Tyler Ward faced only 11 shots throughout the entire game, and treated the entire team to a Denny’s trip as a reward for the improved defensive performance. Quebec scored once in the first period, twice in the second period, and once more in the third to finish the game strongly.

Super star Center Jst Maro makes yet another appearance atop the stars of the game, with three assists and six total shots on goal. Boris Petrov was the second star, scoring twice and assisting on a third goal on three shots. Rounding out the three stars was Igor Petrov, who had two assists of his own to help the Citadelles demolish Detroit.

Game 12: vs Newfoundland Berserkers, 6-3 W

Another day, another big game for the Quebec Offense. Scoring 5 past Berserkers goalie Tim Allen Jr. and adding a sixth into the empty net as an exclamation point, The Quebec skaters once again proved that the best defense is a good offense. After a tense 2-2 first period, Quebec managed to score the only goal of the second to take a 3-2 lead heading into the third. Quebec managed to pull away and bring the score line to 5-3, before adding an empty net insurance goal to close out the game. Citadelles goalie Mat Smith saved 23 of his 26 shots faced, in a solid but not spectacular performance.

This is gonna shock you, so brace yourselves: Jst Maro was first star yet again, this time recording his first hat trick of the season, and assisting another goal. MaroVP? Second star was William Salming, who has been popping up in the stars of the game periodically throughout the season. He was the inverse of Jst Maro, Scoring one and assisting on three. Jasper Maximov was the third star of the evening, adding another three assists to his season tally

Game 13: at Newfoundland Berserkers, 6-5 W

Back to back games against Newfoundland, back to back wins against Newfoundland, back to back six goal games for the Quebec offense. The first period was a crazy high scoring back and forth affair, ending at a 3-3 tie between the teams. The second period was equally as crazy, high scoring, although a little less back and forth. Quebec outscored Newfoundland 3-2 in this period, and it appeared as if both teams had expended all of their energy in the first two frames, as the third period was a tense, but ultimately uneventful 0-0 tie, giving the Citadelles their 12th win of the season by way of a 6-5 score.

Fourth line center, Jonas Caspari received his first postgame award, he was named first star after a one goal, one assist performance. The second star went to  Newfoundland player who is not worth writing about. Third star went to Teylora Petrov! Yet another Petrov on QCC having a great game, he also scored a goal and assisted on another.

Game 14: vs Vancouver Whalers, 9-0 W

LMFAO. That is all. While Vancouver is no longer the record setting team that they were last season, a 9-0 dismantling that really should have been higher scoring is a huge fall from grace. Quebec scored 2 in the first period, three in the second period, and four in the third. Goalie Mertin Brouder had one of the worst games in SMJHL history. He allowed eight goals on 44 shots for a paltry game rating of 28. The usual starter, Jon St. Ark, was called upon in relief an allowed one more goal in the nine shots he faced.

Stan Q. Next was the first star of the game, lighting the lamp once and assisting on an additional three goals! Winger Ryan Rieley made his season debut on the stars of the game, with his two goal, two assist performance good enough for the second star of the night. Teylora Petrov was once again the third star of the game, assisting an impressive three goals during the game. Goalie Tyler Ward posted yet another shutout, saving all eight shots he faced.

Game 15: vs Kelowna Knights, 4-2 W

The knights are a very solid team, and this was a fairly comfortable victory over them, which all in all means that this was a very impressive showing for the Citadelles. This game was never in doubt for Quebec, as they scored the only goal of the first period, outscored the Knights 3-1 in the second, and defended the two goal lead for the entirety of the third period, thus finishing the game at a score of 4-2. Mat Smith had an excellent game, saving 36 of the 38 shots he faced, which was good enough for a game rating of 85.

The shot conversion of Quebec was integral to their win, as we were out shot 38-25. Mikael Koskinen was the first star of the game, he had two assists and three hits. Goalie Mat Smith was the third star of the game, off of his impressive performance in net. Quebec is on a 14 game winning streak for those who are following along at home…

Game 16: at Maine Timber, 2-3 OTL

Oh, the calamity! A Quebec loss! While Quebec did lose, they earn an important point in this game regardless. A scoreless first period gave way to a Quebec goal in the second, but Maine cancelled out the early lead to force overtime by scoring twice to Quebec’s once in the third. Mat Smith may have taken the loss, but he had a solid 22 saves on 25 shots faced. Bigga Foryu had an excellent game, saving 32 of the 34 shots he faced en route to his overtime win. Quebec heavily outshot the Timber 34-25, but could not make that shot advantage count.

Boris Petrov notched yet another second star, scoring a goal, shooting three times, and blocking two shots on the other end. While the winning streak may be over, Quebec still has an excellent record on the season.

Game 17: at Colorado Raptors, 2-3 OTL

Back to back overtime losses, talk about bad luck! A scoreless first period gave way to a back and forth 2-2 second period, then the game took a step back to a tense scoreless third period. Colorado finally got one past Tyler Ward in overtime to send Quebec to their second straight overtime loss. Once again, losing in overtime is tough, but the silver lining is that the Citadelles still got a point out of the game, adding to their season total. Quebec fourth liner Brian Davenport was the second star of the game, scoring one of Quebec’s goals and blocking a shot. Zdenko Beranek scored the other goal for Quebec  All in all, this was a forgettable game for Quebec. The offense has been faltering after being red hot to start the season. Hopefully they can pick it up in the next couple games.

Game 18: vs St. Louis Scarecrows, 2-5 L

This is one of the most inexplicable results of the season, without a doubt. St. Louis is deep into a rebuilding period and came into the game with a paltry three wins on the season. St. Louis scored the only goal of the first period, then outscored Quebec 2 goals to one in each of the second and third periods to close out the game and escape the weird French speaking part of Canada with a win. Despite losing by three goals, Quebec outshot the Scarecrows 38-25, but unfortunately QCC goalie Tyler Ward struggled between the pipes, posting a subpar 80% save percentage. The St. Louis goalie deserved the lion’s share of credit for this win, as he kept the potent QCC attack at bay for the entire 60 minutes of the game. Sadly, Quebec did not get any of the stars of the game. Ryan Rieley did manage to score both goals for Quebec, though. Will Quebec manage to rebound, find their form, and end this episode of the recap on a high note?

Game 19: at Kelowna Knights, 3-1 W

A win! Finally! Quebec finally picks up a win after going on a three game slide when they travelled to Kelowna (where ever the hell that is). The first and second periods were scoreless, and in the third period, Quebec’s offense finally woke up and score three times to put away the game and seal the win. Jari Heikkinen was the first star of the game for Quebec, scoring a goal and putting in several amazing defensive shifts to make sure that Quebec would win. Teylora Petrov was the third star of the night, also adding a goal while playing shutdown defense. Goalie Tyler Ward has yet another incredible game to secure the win. The shots were pretty even, with Quebec leading 31-27. It was Quebec’s shot conversion that gave them the win. Quebec winning is back on the menu!

Game 20: vs St. Louis Scarecrows, 1-0 W

Mat Smith shutout! Allowing no goals on 28 shots faced, the experienced netminder dominated the game from whistle to whistle, and although any one goal game is tense, Mat never looked like he would concede a goal. He received a first star for this performance, which was well deserved as he was far and away the best player on the ice during the game. Opposition goalie, Nicolae Antonescu was the second star of the night, with an equally impressive 43 saves on 44 shots faced. Unfortunately there can be only one winning goalie, but both netminders played extremely well and deserve all the plaudits coming their way. Winger Kev Kevens scored the game winning (and only) goal for the Citadelles. This win avenged Quebec’s loss to St. Louis a couple games previous.

Quebec’s 11th through 20th games were not quite as dominant as their first ten games, but a 7-1-2 record is still very good and proves that the 9-0-1 record in the first games was no fluke. The highlight og these ten games was absolutely the 9-0 dismantling of the Vancouver Whalers, and that very well might be the Citadelles’ best game of the season. The low point was the 2-5 loss to St. Louis, which was a very bad loss to take, especially by three goals, but they avenged this loss a couple games later.
