Quebec Game Recap: Part three [Double Media Week - Holidays Edition]
#1

Double media pls
Well here we are, the third round of zeagle’s QCC game recaps! In part two, we saw Quebec beat the reigning champs by a devastating score line of 9-0, go on their first losing streak of the season, have some back luck in overtime games, but ultimately post a respectable 7-1-2 record. Like in the previous two parts, I will be examining Quebec’s next 10 games, games 21 through 30 on the season. I will provide obvious stats, low quality analysis, and random commentary as I see fit. Away we go…

Game 21: vs Anchorage Armada, 3-2 SOW

Apparently, the Anchorage Armada are probably the second best team in the league, after us of course. I honestly had no idea, because we always beat them with minimal effort. Ok, a shoot out win is a little more than minimal effort, but a dub’s a dub and the Citadelles kept rolling. This game was not very third period Quebec, with the Citadelles scoring the lone goal in the second, before scoring once and conceding twice in the third to set up a nervy overtime period that “took a year off of my life” -Faelex. Quebec managed to escape with the two points despite being outshot by a total of seven and having five times the amount of penalty minutes that Anchorage had. Faceoffs were the only place Quebec had a significant advantage, leading by six in this category.

Ryan Rieley was the first star of the night by way of his one assist, two penalty minute night. Must have been slim pickings for whoever decided on the stars, that’s not a great game lol. Quebec’s Kev Kevens also was a star on this night, taking home the third star for his one goal, four blocked shot game. This stat line is much more impressive than Ryan’s but okay, cool. Regardless, Quebec continued to build their lead at the top of the division with this gutsy effort.

Game 22: vs Nevada Battleborn, 4-1 W

A comfortable win for Quebec? Unheard of! One would really think that the best team in the league would have a few more comfortable wins, but no, Quebec likes to let the other teams think they have a chance. This was not the case tonight, as goalie Tyler Ward had another excellent game in net, stopping 28 of the 29 shots he faced. Quebec’s offense was on fire this game, mustering an eye watering 51 shots in the 60 minutes of game time. That’s almost a shot per minute, folks. Despite this dominance on the ice, Quebec struggled in the face off circle, willing just 35 out of the total 75 faceoffs. Despite this, Center Jst Maro was over 60% of his faceoffs.

Teylora Petrov was the first star of the night for Quebec, tallying two assists, blocking a shot, and having two hits, plus whatever other impressive defensive contributions he made that do not show up in a box score. Mr. Dad Strength himself, Jst Maro once again pops up amongst the stars (he should take up dancing, would be a cool crossover) with his two goal, two blocked shot, one takeaway, 13 faceoff win performance being good enough for the second star. First star in my heart though. The third star went to another Quebec skater, this time it was Igor Petrov. With a goal and a hit to his name from this game, he had another solid performance, and I know his GMs are hoping for more of the same from him!

Game 23: vs Newfoundland Berserkers, 5-2 W

Another comfortable win for Quebec against a middling team. Third period Quebec showed up en force here. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie, Quebec scored the only goal of the second period to take the lead heading into the third period, where the offense fully woke up and scored three times, while only conceding once, to close out the game and to add another pair of points to the season total. It should be no surprise, but Quebec more than doubled Newfoundland’s shot total during the game, 44-21. In addition to that, Quebec was also the more physical team, leading in hits 19-15. The Citadelles did struggle at the faceoff dot somewhat, winning 22 to the Berserker’s 30, but this was a minor blip in an otherwise dominating game.

Defender Jasper Maximov was the first star of the game, yet again, with two goals and an assist to his name. He also added a hit and played many solid defensive shifts en route to the win. Zdenko Beranek was the second star, making a return to the stars after slumping a little. He had three assists and two hits in his time on the ice that game. Mikael Koskinen was the third star, making a rare appearance here. He had a goal and an assist, and also had a hit and a takeaway on the defensive end. Comfortable wins are always good for a hockey team, and hopefully this game will build momentum for Quebec as the season continues forth.

Game 24: vs Detroit Falcons, 5-2 W

Back to back 5-2 wins for Quebec! This was another type of third period Quebec game, with Detroit taking a 2 goal to 1 lead after the first period, Quebec pulled one back to tie the game at two a piece by the end of the second period, but exploded in the third period, scoring three goals to put the Falcons out of reach for the night. Quebec dominated the shots in this game as well, outshooting the Falcons 32-23, and were the more physical team as well, registering 19 hits to Detroit’s 12 hits.

Quebec had all three stars of the night, and it should be no surprise who it was. Zdenko Beranek was the first star of the game, with a goal and an assist to his name. Jasper Maximov was the second star, also with a goal and an assist. Teylora Petrov rounded out the three stars with an assist. Goalie Tyler Ward also had a fantastic game, with 21 saves on 23 shots faced.

Game 25: at Carolina Kraken, 3-2 OTW

Carolina almost drafted me or something, so I’m very glad Quebec traded up to snag me. Imagine not being on the best team in the league lol. Despite this being an overtime win for Quebec, they outshot the Kraken 39-19, almost doubling them up on their home ice. The Citadelles also had the lion’s share of the takeaways in the game, leading 13-4 in that category. All of the other statistical categories were neck and neck between the two teams, as a close game would suggest. This was a third period Quebec type game, as Quebec scored the only goal in the third period to force OT, and then scored the winner in OT as well.

Jasper Maximov was once again the first star of the game, assisting two goals and blocking a shot during the game. Stan Q. Next was also honored after the game, earning the third star with his assist and two blocked shots. Quebec kept their win streak going this game, but would they be able to keep it coming?

Game 26: vs Carolina Kraken, 3-5 L

Quebec lost only their third game in regulation time in the rematch against Carolina in a messy defensive performance. Citadelles starting goalie, Mat Smith, had an abysmal game allowing 3 goals on the first 11 shots he faced, before being pulled for the relief Goalie, Tyler Ward. Ward had a much more solid game, making 24 saves on the 26 shots he faced, but the damage had already been done and Carolina had an insurmountable lead. Quebec showed some grit though, as the first period ended at 3-2 Carolina. A goal a piece in the second period left the Kraken with a 4-3 lead going into the final frame, where a fifth goal proved to be too much for Quebec to overcome. Center Stan Q. Next was Quebec’s only star of the game, adding a second star to his seasonal accomplishments. He had a pair of assists on the night.

While this loss was a huge disappointment, Quebec has proved that they can shoot themselves out of a slump, and that their defensive woes come and go. Hopefully they will be able to bounce back from this defeat in their next game!

Game 27: at Nevada Battleborn, 6-3 W

After a disappointing loss last game, the Citadelles rebounded in a big way, as they tend to do. While Nevada has not been having the best season, getting a win while facing experienced netminder Phillip Weaver is always nice. He still had a 43 save game, but a win’s a win. Quebec outshot Nevada 49-20, nearly by a factor of 2.5. Quebec outscored Nevada in the first period, 2-1, and never looked back, scoring the only goal of the second period, and scoring thee goals to Nevada’s two in the third period to seal the win. Goalie Tyler Ward struggled in net a little bit, only saving 17 of his 20 shots faced, but he came away with a win, which is the most important stat for goalies.

Zdenko Beranek once again was the first star of the night, scoring a hat trick on seven shots, and blocking two shots on the other end of the ice. William Salming makes an appearance at second star, after a bit of a hiatus. He was the inverse of Zdenko, with three assists on the night. He also blocked three shots. Jst Maro, MaroVP himself, scored a goal and assisted on another goal to secure the third star for himself.

Game 28: vs Anaheim Outlaws, 5-3 W

Quebec kept their high scoring offense churning, and kept their mediocre defense… defending? In this game! Quebec was down a goal after a 1-2 first period, then flipped the script to tie the game at 3 all after a 2-1 second period. Third period Quebec showed up hard and fast in this game, scoring twice and shutting out Anaheim in the third frame to seal the victory and send the Outlaws home pointless. Anaheim is a solid team, so this is an impressive win.

Mikael Koskinen was the first star of the night, accounting for four points, two goals and two assists. Jasper Maximov was the third star of the night, with a goal and two assists. Quebec’s offense has been firing on all cylinders, but the defense has been slightly lacking in the past couple games. Will they be able to keep this up?

Game 29: vs Vancouver Whalers, 5-6 OTL

Well, Quebec kind of choked in this one. A high scoring 2-2 first period gave way to an even higher scoring 3-2 second period for Quebec, but ultimately they were unable to hold this lead, giving up the tying goal in the third period, before losing on a goal in overtime for Vancouver. Somehow, neither goalie was pulled in this 11 goal thriller, with Jon St. Ark coming home with the win. Citadelles goalie Tyler Ward unfortunately lost this game and allowed six goals on 35 shots.

Winger Kev Kevens was the brightest spot for Quebec, earning a second star with his two goal, one assist outing. Mikael Koskinen also scored two goals, but was not a star of the night unfortunately. This loss was tough, especially because Quebec had been consistently beating down Vancouver in their previous meetings.

Game 30: vs Nevada Battleborn, 0-2 L
Well, it was bound to happen eventually. It took 30 games for Quebec to be shutout this season. Phillip Weaver was the netminder that finally managed this, saving all 22 shots he faced during the game. Nevada outshout Quebec 41-22 and was the more physical team during the game as well, registering more hits. Despite Losing, Tyler Ward was the second star of the game, receiving praise for his 39 save outing, which earned him a game rating of 87. Stan Q. Next was the third star of the game, for some reason, despite not having any points in the game. This game was very forgettable and proves that any team is capable of having an off night.

Well, this recap ended on a sour note, but Quebec posted a very good 7-2-1 record during this 10 game stretch. They had a ton of high scoring games, but the defense struggled consistently. This is most likely a product of Quebec’s offensively focused brand of hockey. Overall this was a fantastic run of games and Quebec will be very happy with their results.
