S57 SHL State of the Union
#1

Hey SHL! It’s been a very busy and exciting season taking over as SHL Commissioner for the first time, and we’ve been working on a lot in Head Office to strive towards making this site an exciting and enjoyable place to be, and we’ve been working really hard on a lot of different questions and concerns we’ve seen the site raise on the forums and on Discord. In an effort to increase communication between our HO group and the site, we’re putting out this update post, which will hopefully become a seasonal occurrence, to review the things we worked on this past season, update you all on different ideas and plans that are in production, and gauge your opinion on various site issues before we start to take action to deal with them. Your feedback and ideas really do mean a lot to us, so please take the time to comment in this thread with your thoughts on everything written down here. With that preamble out of the way, let’s get into our S57 State of the Union thread!

We’ll start with a look back on everything we’ve added and introduced this season:

SHL Merch Store

One of my favourite projects from this year, this had been in development for a very long time but this season we were finally able to unveil it to the site! After a long vetting process we were able to get a head count on all the logos we could legally use on the store, and worked closely with a lot of teams to get their logos store ready! We’ve been really appreciative and happy to see everyone’s support with its release. We set the profit margin as low as possible to make all of the merch as affordable as possible, but in raw sales alone we have sold $1040 worth of SHL Merchandise! Now that most team’s primary logos are on there, we will be working hard to add secondary logos to the site as some of you have requested, and hopefully branch out into selling custom user designs or championship tees! Once again, thank you guys all for your support thus far!

The SHL Audit Department

The second department that we created during the offseason was the Audit Department, that split the Auditing team of the Updaters into their own department (lead by @BadWolf) in order to audit the other parts of the league. The main focus of this season was to get the Auditing of the SHL Index compared to Player Profiles in order to catch mistakes in the process of getting player builds into the sim engine. With the help of @juke we are able to make the automation of that to almost perfection, and then manual checking on it as well. This will also be a place where we can start branching off and audit other things as well.

The SHL Events Team

After discussing this plan for a long time with the HO group led by Corey, this season we were finally able to introduce the SHL Events Team! Properly delegating all the work needed to run the SHL helps us put more effort into making these systems run at a higher quality, rather than Head Office becoming swamped and only being able to put in the absolute minimum effort. The SHL Events Team has allowed us to hand off prepwork for site events like draft, awards and calendar management off to the capable hands of @sve7en, and he’s already full of a lot of great ideas to make these events more visually engaging and entertaining! I don’t wanna reveal too much and steal his thunder, but Head Office has been very excited to see the fresh ideas he’s looking to bring to the events on the site that bring us all together. Stay tuned for more from him soon!

Twitter Changes

Another great change courtesy of @luketd (good hire nour)! Twitter automation has made great strides for a lot of different groups, it’s made Twitter incredibly more viable and accessible in making money on the site, and its helped lighten the workload on bankers by letting them act more as verifiers and auditors of the system rather than having to run it themselves where its prone to human error. This was a change I loved to see here and has really lit a fire for me to search for more systems we can automate and make easier to access. I think a big choking point for a lot of users is how complicated and inaccessible this format can be, something I had a great discussion about with Luke and Patty recently, so changes like this one, and hopefully more in the future, go a long way in ensuring we don’t lose new creates in the confusion.

Active Backup Cap Relief

We’ve had a lot of people talking about the logjam of goalies in the SHL right now and the impact it’s had on our players finding spots on rosters. This is a problem that we in HO all agree is still ongoing and still needs to be resolved (more on that later), but the addition of Active Backup Cap Relief has been a great first step in dealing with that, making it easier for teams to field more goalies on their roster without kneecapping the rest of their team when it comes to cap management. In it’s first season we’ve already seen a lot of teams taking advantage of it and we hope to see a lot more in the future do the same! Player retention is one of the biggest problems the SHL has been dealing with since I’ve been here, and anything we can do to keep players engaged is something we’re very engaged in bringing to life.

Shl

Those were some of the highlights from this past season, let’s move forward with some of the ideas we’ve been discussing throughout this last season, some already in progress, and some we want to hear more from you on how we can tackle these problems, or if we’re looking at it from an angle you all agree with:

Goalie Logjam

Like I mentioned above, we took our first steps this season in tackling the issue of the abundance of goalies in the SHL with the Active Backup Goalie Relief, but there is still plenty of work to be done! Head Office has had a lot of discussion on this topic this season and it’s brought us to some unorthodox ideas that we wanna flesh out before revealing, but we still have a lot to discuss in terms of the viability of these plans, their impact on the SHL and SMJHL teams, and their impact on SHL history and recordkeeping, but before that we wanna gauge you all, especially the goalies, on your thoughts on this? We discussed some ideas in the vein of limiting goalies during drafts or maybe not letting goalies create for a bit altogether, but ultimately we were never too fired up about ideas that resulted in a limitation of player choice.

Parity and the Update Scale

Since the move to FHM, it’s been very clear that the SHL has experienced a much greater divide between its top teams and its bottom teams versus the STHS era. Rebuilds are taking longer, players need more TPE to be effective, and players are more often than not spending the maximum of 4 seasons in juniors, only being called up by SHL teams to avoid losing them to waivers. This is an issue we’ve seen for a while, but this season have discussed a lot in terms of conquering it. I’ll start by saying that this is almost certainly a multi solution issue, and the first step we take isn’t going to be the one that completely fixes things, but like the Active Backup Cap Relief, we’re hoping this first step is the one that at least gets the ball rolling.

Head Office is looking at making changes to the current update scale, allowing juniors players to take more advantage of the TPE they earn at the start of their career and be more effective players at lower TPE totals, rather than only really being usable at 900 TPE. By doing this, we’re hoping to see players get called up sooner and make an impact on rebuilding teams’ competitive window sooner! All of this obviously sounds good in theory, but the update scale is a very delicate balance, and we’re gonna need a lot of testing before this goes live to find what exactly the right scale is going to look like, and that’s where we’d love some help from you all when it comes to testing! Currently, we’re testing and discussing an update scale that looks like:

Code:
6-9    1 tpe
10-11    2 tpe
12-13    5 tpe
14-15    12 tpe
16-17    30 tpe
18-20    60 tpe

Like I mentioned above, this scale would allow us to get our players more effective in less time, but it’s not without its own problems. It still needs a lot of testing, and it does result in a lot of stagnation towards the peak of SHL careers. Again, this is gonna require a lot of discussion and testing, but we’re hoping to get you all informed at least that it’s something we currently have on the table!

Forum Reformatting/Removal of Forum Locker Rooms

We took a look this season at hopefully making this site less daunting and confusing for new users, while also freeing up space to pursue things like a new index and/or automated updating. This is still in the very early stages of discussion but we want to take a look at reorganizing the way our forum is laid out, while also culling some of the subforums that take up space while being used minimally. We’re looking mainly at the archiving of the site forum LRs that, for a lot of teams, have become defunct in the switch to Discord for communication, especially with how much space those take up. I’m not a computer science guy so I won’t pretend to understand how data, storage and hosting work, but from talks with Teddy and Luke, I understand that removing defunct portions of the site like LRs opens the door to a lot more room for hosting things like the index and updating ideas I mentioned above! As with any site changes though, this comes with a lot of feedback needing to be heard before we make these moves, so feel free to let us know your thoughts on the removal of LRs, or just your ideas on the site’s subforum layout!

Milestones

This has been a very awkward floating topic for a while now but Milestones, especially for mid to low tier SHL teams, has become an unrewarding experience in the FHM era, essentially becoming a free 4 TPE for players on competing teams that lower tier teams get left out of. With FHM having a larger impact on individual player success based on your teammates versus STHS, Head Office is taking a look at removing the Milestones system, and tacking on an additional 3 tpe to all tiers of team training camp at season start, to prevent this system in FHM where the rich seem to get richer. This one I was especially curious about site opinion, because if I’m honest, we’ve heard complaints about milestones, but I just don’t know what the site’s general take is on if they like it or not. That said, if we were to remove milestones, we would definitely look at something new in the future to take its place, perhaps cash incentives instead of TPE, as I personally think the best part of Milestones is being able to reflect on how you did last season compared to your peers. Regardless, give us your thoughts as with everything else listed!

Shl

With all of that jotted down, this is the conclusion of the SHL State of the Union post! Again, hearing from you all is so important to us so please comment on these changes/issue and don’t be afraid to speak up, we promise we’re listening. Thanks for reading everyone!

On behalf of the SHL Head Office,
nour

This is not one of the options I've heard being thrown around, and it's an interesting one for sure. One of the appeals of Milestones is seeing how your player stacks up against the rest of the league. I don't think they should be removed altogether, but reworked in a way that doesn't give an unfair advantage to those who are on better teams like you mentioned.

One of my favorite ideas, which I've seen tossed around and generally met with approval, is to incorporate the TPE earned from Milestones into Championship Week. Allow the TPE earned from Milestones to be applied towards tasks for that specific PT, allowing those who earned milestones to get a break. It's a neat way to still have the Milestones, but to not allow those who earned more to get an advantage over those who didn't. I'd love to know if this idea has been discussed in HO and what the opinions are about it.

Trimming the site down is a great start. There's a ton of info floating around but from a UX perspective it's a huge mess. Hoping with the influx of cash (and getting more exposure to the store), we can create a front page that display crucial information and engages users rather than inhibiting them. What we have right now is a shelf of books at the library. What we need is a Dashboard, displaying recent games, your player stats, team store, and other relevant information.

You guys have made great strides so far! keep up the good work

My recent spitballing was to move seasonal milestones to career milestones. Ie, allow players to claim a small sum on TPE for important milestones in certain stats. for example, 50 goals, or 200 hits. This is a huge aspect of the NHL already, as fans love to track N00th goals, points, assists, ect. Humans love stats, the NFL knows this the best. They've infused their sport with nigh-meaningless stats to keep people engaged not just in the sport, but in the data it creates. We should be similar. Achievements have always been a decent way to engage certain players in all sorts of games. We even have one for 2k TPE. So the next logical evolution in the SHL is a system that puts our stats and data to work for us.

18-20 TPE costing 45 TPE instead of 60 should be a reasonable solution. Otherwise I'd imagine you'll just get a massive lack in build diversity--you might still get that anyway.
