In preparation of the upcoming awards show we wanted to take some time to highlight each award and the beautiful players that have been nominated for each one. In this article we will look at the Scott Stevens Defender of the Year Award and the Bojo Biscuit Best Defensive Defender Award. The Stevens is given to the best defender in the regular season as selected by the awards committee. The Bojo Biscuit is given to the defensive defender who might not show up on the score sheet, but is vital to his or her team’s continued success.

Note: the number in brackets beside each name is the number of nominations they received by the committee during the nomination phase. Finalists are in their own category.

S57 Scott Stevens Defender of the Year Award

The Scott Stevens Defender of the Year award is given to the defender who most exemplifies the two-way attributes that are required of an elite defender. He or she must be able to perform on either end of the ice, and to provide elite offense and defense for his or her team. There are many worthy candidates for this award, but only one will win in the end.

Below are the honorable mentions in this very packed field:

Diside Dayudie (3) syndicate
Cassius Darrow (3) Argonauts
Karstrasse Scholz (1) Blizzard
Rex Kirkby (1) Inferno

Finalists

FR Finn-Rhys (Finalist) Blizzard
The leading scorer for all defenders, FR Finn-Rhys was an absolute monster for the Edmonton Blizzard on both ends of the ice. Acquiring 61 points (15 goals, 46 assists), FR Finn-Rhys shot 255 shots on goal, and contributed 121 hits, 191 shot blocks and 36 takeaways on the defensive side of things.

Brennan Kennedy Jr (Finalist) Dragons
The blue line dynamo for the Calgary Dragons, Brennan Kennedy Jr. notched 54 points (13 goals, 41 assists) including 16 power play points. With 132 shot blocks, Kennedy Jr also contributed on the defensive side of the ice for the Dragons, and averaged a team-high 24:21 per night.

Augustus Wang (Finalist) Stampede
On a stacked Buffalo Stampede team, Augustus Wang stood out as their best defender, equaling FR Finn-Rhys for the scoring lead for defenders (16 goals, 45 assists). Outside of the score sheet, Wang also stood up for his team-mates with 31 PIM, 97 shot blocks and an even giveaway/takeaway ratio.

Bojo Biscuit Defensive Defender Award

The Bojo Biscuit Award is presented to the defender who might not be showing up on the scoresheet, but contributes to their team in the defensive zone by keeping the puck out of their own net, preventing scoring chances and tilting the ice in their favor. Though not necessarily flashy, their work is vital, and should be recognized as important to all of us in the SHL.

Below are the honorable mentions for this award, which had many people that the award committee thought worthy:

Poopity Scoop (1) Panthers
Nicholas Owens (1) Stampede
Dominic Montgomery (1) Wolfpack
Jakob Hamr (1) Barracuda
Alex Petrenko (1) pride
Andrej Doskocil (1) Rage
Bjorn Leppanen (1) Renegades
Nat Emerson (2) Platoon
Guy Zheng (3) Inferno

Finalists

Brennan Kennedy Jr (Finalist) Dragons
Our first finalist for the Bojo Biscuit is Brennan Kennedy Jr. from the Calgary Dragons, who managed to have a monstrous defensive season, with 132 shot blocks, 45 takeaways, and 72 hits, averaging 24 minutes a night. His advanced stats also bear this out, with a good Corsi of over 60% and a very positive shot differential for his squad when he was on the ice.

FR Finn-Rhys (Finalist) Blizzard
FR Finn-Rhys is proving that he knows how to play both ends of the ice with his ability to drive play at either end. Defensively, he matched his offensive prowess by racking up 121 hits, 36 takeaways and 191 shot blocks. Finn-Rhys also enabled his team to suppress opposing shots when he was on the ice on an elite level, and controlled play by a staggering amount.

Cassius Darrow (Finalist) Argonauts
With being the face of the franchise for the Seattle Argonauts comes a large responsibility, and Cassius Darrow held up his end. A crazy season, especially defensively, with 126 hits, 61 takeaways, and an eye-popping 312 blocked shots - the most in the league by a huge margin, and a Corsi that while not team-leading, is in the top segment for Seattle.

The winners of these awards will be announced at the S57 SHL Awards, Feb 10th! Stay tuned!
