Next we will turn our attention to some of the top SHL defensemen worthy of recognition for their stellar paly in season fifty seven. First the Scott Stevens Defender of the Year award is given to the defender who most exemplifies the two-way attributes that are required of an elite defender. They must be able to perform on either end of the ice, and to provide elite offense and defense for their team. Stats that are considered for this award include points, hits, shots blocked, give away to take away ratios, corsi numbers, etc.

Here are the nominees:

Edmonton Blizzard Defenseman- FR Finn-Rhys (15 goals, 46 assists, 61 points, +43 rating, 121 hits, 36 takeaways, 191 shot blocks 64 CF% in 66 games)

Calgary Dragons Defenseman- Brennan Kennedy Jr (13 goals, 41 assists, 54 points, +32 rating, 71 hits, 45 takeaways, 132 shot blocks, 62% CF and team high 24:21 average time on ice in 66 games)

Buffalo Stampede Defenseman- Augustus Wang (16 goals, 45 assists, 61 points, +46 rating, 60 hits, 32 takeaways, 97 shot blocks, 60 CF% in 66 games)

FR Finn-Rhys @FinnRhys !!! The leading scorer for all defenders, FR Finn-Rhys was an absolute monster for the Edmonton Blizzard on both ends of the ice and was voted the most complete defender unanimously by all the committee members. In addition with a positive take away to give away ratio, triple digit hits, almost two hundred shots blocked, only having 16 penalty minutes with great possession numbers and loads of penalty kill and power play time there were really no holes in FR Finn-Rhys game this past season.

Following suit with the recognition of defensemen, the next award up is the Bojo Biscuit Defensive Defender Award. The Bojo Biscuit Award is presented to the defender who might not be showing up on the scoresheet, but contributes to their team in the defensive zone by keeping the puck out of their own net, preventing scoring chances and tilting the ice in their favor. Though not necessarily flashy, their work is vital, and should be recognized as important through out the SHL community.

Here are the nominees with two familiar faces from the Stevens nominations that dominated in both ends of the ice:

Edmonton Blizzard Defenseman- FR Finn-Rhys (121 hits, 36 takeaways, 191 shot blocks 64 CF% in 66 games)

Calgary Dragons Defenseman- Brennan Kennedy Jr (71 hits, 45 takeaways, 132 shot blocks, 62 CF% and team high 24:21 average time on ice in 66 games)

Seattle Argonauts Defenseman- Cassius Darrow (126 hits, 61 takeaways, 312 shot blocks, 40 CF%, team high 24:42 average time on ice and in 66 games)

Cassius Darrow @hhh81 !!!! Cassius Darrow, the face of the franchise for the Seattle Argonauts had an absolutely monster year on the back end lead the league in shot blocks with the next closest defending being 44 shot blocks behind him. He also led the league in takeaways and had decent possession numbers in comparison with his teammates while also longing big minutes in the top ten most on average per game amongst defensemen.

Shifting gears, we will now take a look at some of the top performing SHL goalies for season fifty seven with the John McBride Award. This award goes to the best goaltender in the league. This is difficult to assess as statistics such as goals against average and even save percentage are highly dependent on the team in front of the goaltender. Of course, extreme performances compared to peers should be valued highly.

Here are the nominees:

Buffalo Stampede Goaltender- Elizabeth Doyle (40 Wins, 11 Losses, 2 Overtime Losses, 0.926 Save Percentage, 6 Shutouts, 2.19 Goals Against Average, 1474 saves, 77 Game Rating in 53 games played)

Baltimore Platoon Goaltender- Luca Del Vecchio (10 Wins, 40 Losses, 4 Overtime Losses, 0.920 Save Percentage, 3 Shutouts, 3.54 Goals Against Average, 2222 saves, 79 Game Rating in 57 games played)

Winnipeg Jets Goaltender- Storm Chamberlin (30 Wins, 22 Losses, 2 Overtime Losses, 0.920 Save Percentage, 5 Shutouts, 2.51 Goals Against Average, 1569 saves, 74 Game Rating in 55 games played)

Elizabeth Doyle @Evok !!!! From the start of discussions within the award committee this was Doyle’s award to lose being unanimously voted the best goalie of the year. She had extremely strong numbers in pretty much every statistical category including the league-leading save-percentage, which is arguably the single most important goalie stat at this point. She also faced a decent amount of shots for someone on a good team and recorded a league leading six shutouts so it's not like she was just carried by the team in front of her either.

The next award to hand out tonight is the Aidan Richan award given to the most improved player throughout season fifty seven. This accolade is awarded to a player that had major improvements in terms of their overall contributions on the ice from previous seasons who is actively updating and is among his or her team's top performers, either offensively and or defensively.

Here are the nominees:

Buffalo Stampede Defenseman- Augustus Wang (16 goals, 45 assists, 61 points, +46 rating, 60 hits, 32 takeaways, 97 shot blocks in 66 games). Wang had a huge jump in production from season fifty six to season fifty seven going from 39 to 61 points, becoming one of the league’s best defensemen.

New England Wolfpack Forward- Ethan Price (32 goals, 34 assists, 66 points, +4 rating, 29 hits, 10 takeaways, 101 shot blocks in 66 games). Price had a huge increase in production from season fifty six to season fifty seven going from 21 to 66 points.

Buffalo Stampede Forward- Aron Hernadivic (33 goals, 29 assists, 62 points, +32 rating, 70 hits, 36 takeaways, 39 shot blocks in 66 games). Hernadivic had a significant increase in production from season fifty six to season fifty seven going from 31 to 62 points.

Manhattan Rage Defenseman- Jukka Timonen (17 goals, 23 assists, 40 points, +17 rating, 69 hits, 21 takeaways, 64 shot blocks in 66 games). Timonen had a noteworthy jump in production from season fifty six to season fifty seven going from 12 to 40 points.

Ethan Price @Zomp !!! The Wolfpack sophomore was an easy choice for the committee with a unanimous vote to select Price with the most improved player award. He established himself as a premier forward in the SHL racking up stat lines that absolutely smashed the numbers he put up in his rookie season. While he did see a small increase in ice time it doesn't hinder his case at all here. Price saw a league best increase in points from one season to the next and away from the puck he also saw an increase in hits, blocks, plus/minus rating and CF%.

Saving the best for last, I wanted to finish off the award ceremony with recognizing the incredible contributions and positive impact a handful of SHL members have had on the league this past season. So without further a du the next award presented will be the Damian Littleton Trophy, awarded to recognize the most dedicated members of the SHL community.

Here are the nominees:

Luketd (Historian Committee, Co-Commissioner of the SHL, SHL Head Office Contributions, Contributions to Twitter automation)

Juke (Contribution to the Audit team, stat/file work for SHN producing extremely high quality media on a regular basis, Contributions to the SHL and SMJHL Awards Teams, Co-GM for Newfoundland Berserkers, Contributions to the history department )

Kalakar (SHL simmer putting hours of time on a daily basis to run the SHL regular season and playoffs, helped the transitioned from a 50 game schedule to a 66 game schedule this past season)

Patty (Contributions to the SHL Head Office, file worker, under the radar guy who contributes a lot to the behind the scenes work to make the SHL run smoothly)

Before announcing the winner of this award I want to say a big thank you to the four Littleton finalists for all of the time, dedication and voluntary work you put in and to everyone who has made positive contributions to making the SHL such a special community.

@juke !!!! Having the privilege of being teammates with Juke in Newfoundland when I first came back to the site in season fifty three, I have witnessed first hand all of the incredible work Juke has put into improving the SHL. He is one of the smartest numbers guy I have met on the site and its truly amazing seeing all of the coding/graph/stats work he has done over the seasons. This season in particular he wrote code to help audit the entire leagues attributes with like 3 clicks. With the Audit team, he has taken charge of automating a lot of file stuff to double check things and limit future mistakes. For both the SHL and SMJHL Awards Teams he wrote the code for collection of stats to be analyzed for award nominations and his scraping code is also the backbone of a lot of quality media with SHN along with some pretty in depth kick ass analytical graphs.

On top of all of this Juke has really went above and beyond in his role as the Co-GM for SMJHL Newfoundland Berserkers. Being part of the Newfoundland locker room for five season I have witnessed first hand his positive welcoming presence. He is the kind of guy that will stop at nothing to help you out whether it be helping provide fantasy advice for SHL drafts, setting up code to automatically remind player to do their training, taking the time to get to know his players on a personal level or even helping tutor me through concepts for my masters stats course. Ultimately, Juke dedication to the Berserkers is undeniable, helping seamlessly integrate new members into the league and be there to talk/help out many members across the league.
