(GRADED)Deep Dive #1: What are Stats? (Baby Don't Hurt Me)

(This post was last modified: 02-11-2021, 06:39 PM by CptSquall.)

I know next to nothing about hockey or the SMJHL so, after 7 games of preseason action, I wanted to jump into the index to look at what stats are being calculated and tabulated, how my player has performed through 7 games, and how his performance compares to others. In order to do this, I looked at my player's stats and then tabulated the average stats of the top 25 players at the same current playing position (Right Wing) in the index by most points. I considered using average Time On Ice as a better comparison and grabbing players that averaged around the same as Nishimori (14:01) however, with an average difference of less than two minutes compared to the average of the top 25 right wings by points (T25 from now on) seeming fairly insignificant, I chose to stick with the more aspirational comparison of points.

First thing we might as well jump into, since we sorted by this stat to grab our reference group, is points (goals+assists). The average for our T25 group here was 5.04, with points ranging from Mew Two's high of 10 and a low for our group of 3. The average number of goals scored for the T25 was 2.16 (high of 7, low of 0), and average assists clocked in at 2.88 (high of 7, low of 1). There is certainly a high level of variance in points, and in the goal-assist distribution therein, with most players from a glance scoring their points primarily as either a primary scorer or as a key passer. Jack Nishimori falls into the latter group, with all of his 3 points coming from assists.

Looking at the GD, or +/- statline, for our T25 the trend of wide disparity within our category continues. While the average +/- for the T25 comes out to 1.68, our range falls anywhere between a high of 5 and a low of -5. Nishimori falls just behind our average with a perfectly balanced GD of 0. While I certainly like to see that a young player is able to at least cancel out any defensive failures, a quick glance of the GD shows that most of our T25 really seem to fall into the 3-4 range. A quick mode calculation for our T25 reveals a mode GD of 4, a number I'd like to see Nishimori catch up to over the rest of the preseason and season.

For the sake of time, as Nishimori so far operates very clearly in line with his archetype as a playmaker, I'll skip over the shooting stats.

Nishimori continues to exhibit his more careful and balanced play style when we look at the penalty, fighting, and turnover stats. While average PIM for our T25 group came in at 2.44 minutes, Nishimori stayed clean with 0 minutes spent in the box. On average, the SMJHL seems to be a pretty pacifist league, as our T25 logged an average of only 0.04 fights (Friedensreich Hundertwass was the only T25 skater to get in a fight, and he promptly lost said fight). In the GvA and TkA categories, our T25 kept fairly balanced, with the mode for our group clocking at 3 for each group. Nishimori played more conservatively with just one of each.

I assume, with 0 basis in previous knowledge, that our final stat is probably a good stat to look at general overall performance at a glance. Our T25 group averaged a Game Rating of 60.28 (mode 63), while Nishimori has averaged in at a Game Rating of only 52. Not sure how this is calculated, but clearly a lot of room for improvement there.

Last interesting note here for GR: our T25 group of RWs (unsurprisingly to my intuition) averaged an OGR of 61.68 and a DGR of 57.64. Calculating the mode for our T25 however resulted in a mode OGR of 59 and a mode DGR of 65 (probably just a quirk of the sample size, but I found it interesting).

Approved. +5 TPE @qWest
